Drinking at the Dragon (open to all) - Chyril 26th ET

Post by Corbin Dillon »

It had been a hectic time for Corbin over the last few days. He had been investigating, practicing his magic and socialising. The life of a demon-hunting, woman-loving University student was certainly a hard one. What better place to relax, then, than The Burpin' Dragon? As far as he knew he was not in Bill's bad books, though of course that sour old dwarf could turn in a moment, and he had such a thing against young mages. Just because Corbin had, once or twice, used his powers to bring further entertainment to the Dragon, on occasion at the proprietors expense, he was grumpy. But that didn't dampen Corbin's spirits - he was alive, he was well and he hadn't been attacked, killed or possessed by potent foreign magics for days!

He pushed his way through the door, and ambled over to an empty table that was prominently placed so he could watch for the arrival of any friends, acquaintances or simply interesting people. That was the joy of the Dragon, so many people willing to have a good hob-nob. You could meet some deuced interesting people in there. As he took his seat with a comfortable sigh of contentment he looked about for the buxom barmaid Beatrice so he could place his order, and enjoy the sight of her fulsome figure. And then to socialising, drinking and general disorder!

Unfortunately for Corbin, it was not Beatrice, but Yosie that came to his table, though he was still awarded with a good view of her prime assets, on a generous display through the use of low cut dress. Her smile was as pleasant as ever, though her eyes seemed a bit distant and maybe a bit worried as well. "Good evening, mister. What can I get you?" The Dragon was nearly deserted that evening, and what little customers were there, sat hunched in small groups, conversing amongst themselves in a low voice. There was no sign of any sort of entertainment, the corner where usually a band or a bard sat empty. It had been a while since the place had been this empty and devoid of customers.

Beatrice or Yosie was not especially important to Corbin, the lovely view afforded by both was what he enjoyed of an evening, and it seemed Yosie was dressed for such an occasion. Thus he took in the sights with a contented smile on his face.

"Good evening!" He said merrily, casting a glance around the room. "It isn't very busy tonight? Has Bill been watering down the ale again? I've told him about that - bad for business!" Corbin announced. "As for what you can get me, a mug of your finest ale would go down very well."

He cast another glance around the room. No entertainment - Samantha was not there it seemed. The sparse crowd was surprising, given that usually the bar was a den of activity. He turned his eyes back to Yosie.

"Seriously though, why the small crowd? I would have thought it would be packed, especially with the Banner no longer pulling in the crowds." He said. "Samantha is not singing later, I suppose?" That could be it, he supposed. People could be waiting for the entertainment before arriving.

Nervous giggle was Yosie's response to Corbin jest, the girl glancing over her shoulder towards the door, before slipping into the chair next to the young mage and leaning close to whisper. "Didn't you hear? There was fighting in the streets today. Some say people are still being killed on random. Thank Pecunia we did not have another riot, though this is bad too." Another glance to the door, before she leaned even closer, keeping her eyes on the door, and her bosom propped neatly on the table, pushed up and displayed wonderfully should Corbin glance down a bit. "I heard that the Scoutmaster Manyana came back from her grave and saved Secretary Silk from being murdered by the Broherhood. They say they are working for a demon now and are slaughtering people in an attempt to summon their master. And I hear that even though Manyana saved Silk initially they are both dead. Heard they saw his headless body being thrown from the roof of the old Watchtower. And....." The door opened at that point and Yosie quickly slipped out of the chair and stood up, propping her fist upon a hip. "Will there be anythin' else, mister?" She winked, as Bill came in, followed by a man of perhaps fifty yahren with an ugly scar upon his left cheek, his eye covered by a patch. The man was armed with a mace and after a few whispered words from Bill, nodded and moved to a corner, taking a chair and sitting so he would have a good overview of the room and the door leading into it.

Corbin listened intently to the tale, as he glanced at Yosie's ample bosom. They certainly didn't build them like that in Roque. Yet, pleasing as the sight was, the story she was telling was somewhat distressing. The Brotherhood working for a demon? Damn those demons, and damn anyone that worked with them. It took a special type of idiocy to think you could do so and come off best. If there was one thing Corbin didn't like, and there were many, it was demons.

The girl suddenly stood up, and glancing at the door Corbin could see why, as Bill came in with a rather interesting looking fellow. Old and scarred. That suggested he had a story to tell. Corbin also saw that he had a mace. An interesting choice of weapons.

"No no, that will be all for the moment, miss." He said to Yosie, returning the wink.

He then sat back and took a hearty swig of ale as he surreptitiously watched the newcomer. It seemed he was waiting for someone, or at least expecting them. Corbin waited to see just who that person might be. As he did so he casually examined the aether to see if there was anything magical about this gentleman.

Corbin was in for a long wait, the man not moving out of his corner seat at all. Burns passed, and his own drink dwindled, but nobody approached the scarred gentleman, nor did he rise and approach anyone else. From time to time, Bill would peek in through the door, glance towards the old man and nod. After a dozen or so burns he ceased his glances, leaving the room altogether, the old man keeping a close eye on all that happened, an easy job given how little did happen. It took him a few burns to notice Corbin's curiosity, turning his gaze towards the young mage and arching a brow every so often, though he did not speak. Despite all the effort he had put into it, not a trace of Aetheric energy lingered about the old man.

Corbin sat and drank, and watched. He got bored of watching after awhile - the man seemed not to be doing anything. Other than flirting with Yosie, Corbin was wondering just what he could do this evening, other than get roaring drunk. He posed that question to himself, and debated the pros and cons. Eventually he hoisted up his mug of ale and moved over to the man's table.

"Hail and well met." He announced merrily. "Good day to you, would you be put out if I took a seat at your table and bought you a drink?" He enquired, waving over Yosie as he did so.

The man arched his brow further up as Corbin rose, shifting slightly in his chair, though he did not rise, nor do much of anything when the mage came to his lonesome chair, the nearest table a goodly six feet away. "Sure, lad. But, I ain't gonna get langered. Bill ain't payin' Magda and me fer our drinkin' talents, and I'd be an eejit if I cocked up such an easy peasy job." He chewed upon a bushy mustache that covered hi upper lip, glancing towards Yosie. "You get that colleen over there ta get me a couple a' bangers and some chips and I'll be 'appy." The man had a bit of an accent on him, though not one Corbin had heard before. "I can't fanny around though, so you'se better not expect ta have my full attention."

"Excellent" Corbin said as he pondered what the man had said as he grabbed a chair and dragged it over.

"Now, who is Magda?" He enquired. "And just what has Bill hired you to do?" He asked with interest. There was very little going on to draw is interest in the bar, but that Bill had seen fit to part with his money to hire someone to do something intrigued him greatly. "And do you mind very much if I ask where you are from? You do not have an accent familiar to me." He said. Though given his experience had been that of Roque d'Ancourt and The Citadel that was not a huge surprise.

He gestured Yosie over so that he might get himself another beer and the man the food he requested.

The old soldier gave Corbin a toothy grin, his scar turning a crimson red, the grin revealing a number of missing teeth in his upper jaw, all on the left side, the wound that left him with a scar obviously doing a lot more damage. "Well, aintccha a nosy bugger. I had a feelin' you might be the ." He shrugged and snorted loudly, the manners obviously not one of his strong points. "I guessed you did not come cause I was a bit of a dish. So where's am I to start? Magda's a colleen that's me colleague of sort. We've met durin' the bloody battle of Aveas, and she's one mean lass. A knob short of being a lad, but she a blast ta be around. She up from Trothgard, and they make them big there." As Yosie returned he leaned forward and winked at the buxom maid. "A pint of milk if'n you please. And take some food out ta Magda." The girl nodded and shuffled off, leaving Corbin once more alone with the old mercenary. "So, are ya daft or been snoozing far longer than a kip? There's a bloody war going out there, and Bill thinks he don't want them madman messing up his piss up joint. So, he hired us two to make sure it stays safe in 'ere. We is protection sorta speak."

Valya busts through the door as if a whole horde of demons were on her tail. Jeez! Not one day inside the city walls and apparently the world is already coming to an end. Things are on fire, people rushing about, and most importantly…she was very lost. Valya leans up against the doorjamb and tries to catch her breath. What to do? As her eyes adjust to the gloom she brushes her dark tangled hair out of her face and tugs her old green bodice straight. She might as well hide out in here for a bit. Just until things calm down.

She slides along the wall to an empty chair, casting wary looks all about. Val drops down into the seat and sets her heavy backpack down with a sigh. Well. She had finally done it. She had run away…Though, was it really running away if you told everyone where you were going? She remembers calling through the door to her mother’s solar.
“I’m leaving!” she yelled, “Forever!”
“Have a good time, dear…” her mother’s voice was already thick and hazy though it was only noon. “Be back for dinner…the mayor and his wife are coming ‘round.”
“I won’t be back! I’m going to the city! I’m never coming back!”
“That’s nice, dear…”

Valya drops her pointy little chin into her upturned hands and falls into a reverie. After that things had really gone down hill. Well, not right away. First she had collected her things and then she had gone to the stables. There she kissed one stable boy and promised to love him forever. Minutes latter she kissed another and promised him the exact same thing. Valya smiles dreamily. Too bad she wouldn’t be there to see the ensuing fight. That night on the road had been less pleasant. Sleeping outside was much more frightening when it wasn’t one’s own backyard. The hooting owls scared her and she hadn’t thought to bring a blanket. She had finally made it into the city feeling dirty, tired, and decidedly hungry. Foolishly, she had finished all the sandwiches the cook had made her on the very first day.

Valya starts to feel deeply sorry for herself. Her eyes begin to sting and water but she blinks the tears sternly away. She was going to miss the cook, she realizes with a shock. Helena always made her tea when she was cold and tired. Who, Valya thought wildly, was Helena going to make tea for now that she was gone? Tears start to track down her sooty face leaving little rivulets of clean skin. And what about Marissa, the seamstress? Valya pulled out her handkerchief and stares down at the tiny letters. Who else was going to embroider her initials on everything she owned? No one, that’s who! With this startling revelation Valya loses her finger hold on control and breaks into loud, honking sobs.

Certainly not a beauty, this one. Corbin thought to himself as the man opened his mouth to reveal further injuries within his mouth. He was intrigued by the description of this big Trothgardian woman. He had heard tales, of course, of the people from that area, though he had met few of them, and those he had met had not been of the barbaric sort. He got the impression that Magda certainly was.

"Good heavens. Bill hiring protection, is he?" Corbin said, leaning back in his chair. "'Tis a sad day." Corbin said, shaking his head and wondering whether security also applied to little magical jokes. "So are you freelance security, or do you work for someone?" He enquired, wondering whether one of the Citadelian gangs might be getting its hooks into his favourite drinking establishment. "And where is your colleague?" He enquired.

"Magda is out the front. She looks more intimidating and besides she drew the short straw and gets to stand while I can sit and enjoy the afternoon." The old mercenary grinned and shrugged. "We are freelancers. Been pretty hard finding job after the Aveas thing. Wars are good for business, though I think it is better this way. We'll get by and hopefully won't get killed off." All of a sudden he pushed off and leaned his elbow against the table. "So, nosy fellow. Why don't you tell me a bit about yerself? You seem a regular here, though you don't look like a drunk. So what gives?"

Valya found that the door had a rather burly guard with a nasty looking axe by its side, though the blond woman allowed her to pass, her blue eyes judging the girl not to be a threat. Bill spared her a glance, but did nothing to stop her, though he did grumble quite a bit about youth these days and lack of manners and what not. Yosie was already on her way to see if she could help the girl with an order, her hand touching Valya's back and caressing gently. "Is everything okay, honey? Did someone hurt you or anything?" Her hand went to Valya's hair and caressed ever so gently. "Honey?"

Val was shocked out of her self pity by Yosie’s soft, unfamiliar touch. She wasn’t alone! With this city fairly crawling with souls would she ever really be alone again? What a horrifying prospect. Valya tipped her chin up and looked at Yosie, her tears done but her nose still running like a fountain. Pull youself together, you silly little baggage, Valya thought desperately.

“I’m luh-luh-lost. I walked all night, and, and, I’m supposed to find the University of Magic because I’m gonna, I’m gonna…” This lady was looking at her so kindly – she wasn’t really used to that. Valya screwed her fists into her eyes like a child, nearly breaking into fresh sobs. Maybe, Valya realized for the first time, her plan wasn’t so hot. What if they didn’t even want her at this Magic place? “I can’t find it, and…” her voice drops to a hushed whisper, “I’m sc-scared to go back out there alone.”

The Burpin Dragon? Paige wondered, finding herself standing in front of the doors. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have a look around. I know I could use a drink. Without any further hesitation, she opened the door and stepped inside. Finding herself in a dimly lit foyer, the adhiel noted the an aging dwarf sitting behind a desk nearby.

Oh great, more questions.... Grumbling under her breath, Paige made sure her cloak was open just enough for him to get a little peak of her wares and proceeded to the desk.

"Greetings," Paige said with a sultry smile, "My name is Paige and I am looking to find myself a place to relax and have a drink. Perhaps, I could speak with the owner as well, I am seeking some sort of....employment opportunities, if you will."

Even the normally surly Bill was in his supreme grumpy mode, and thus avoided greeting new customers unless they addressed him. He had plenty of trouble as it was, what with his hand hurting like it was being chewed upon by small with shark teeth implanted in their little jaws and the riots outside forcing him to hire protection and post that burly Trothgardian she-warrior at the door. The pair were not expensive and they came with a good recommendation, even though they looked quite rough around the edges. Paige's voice startled him, making the old dwarf snort as she broke him out of a sort of waking dream he liked to engage in as he dozed at his post, the yahren catching up with him. "Ehrm, what? The taproom's through there. And ye can't speak ta owners. Ye can speak to proprietor and that be me. Got a problem with speaking to a dwarf?"

Had it been Beatrice, Valya could have been left to her own designs and given something strong and alcoholic to drown her sorrows in it, but Yosie had a soft heart for people in trouble and besides any excuse to laze and rest a bit was good as another. She slipped onto a chair next to the sobbing girl and draped her arm around Valya's shoulder gently, drawing a handkerchief from her bosom and dabbing the tears away. "It'll be alright sweetheart. The University is not that hard to find during the day. Let me get you something to eat and then we'll set you up with a room and go there together. Alright?"

Well! Problem solved. Valya immediately relaxed and ceased worrying. Being upset was more exhausting than she had expected. Anyway, things had a way of working themselves out, didn’t they? Hadn’t she always depended on the kindness of…well, you know.

Val snuggled down against Yosie, letting her clean off her face. “That would be wonderfully kind of you…I’m Valya Nix, by the way.” She said it in a ‘you may have heard of me’ kind of way. As if the news of the disappearance of the bastard daughter of a minor lady had made it all the way through the Citadel. “What’s your name? And what’s this place called? I’ll be sure to remember how wonderful you were to me…” She delivered this line with perfect aplomb, with a heavy undertone of ‘I won’t forget those who helped me before I became fantastically famous’.

Valya then points at Corbin and the old mercenary. “And who are they? They look like rather tough customers.” She casts a deeply appraising eye over Corbin especially. He was certainly a departure of the type of men she was accustomed to seeing. Namely, old serving men, fat politicians, and callow youths. “Do all the men in Citadel look like that?”

Smiling at the dwarf, Paige noted the Trothgardian woman nearby and couldn't help but feel a bit intimidated. If they need someone to guard the door, I wonder just how rough this city really is. Shaking her dark head as if trying to rid the concerns from her mind, the adhiel cast her blue eyes back to the aging dwarf.

"Not at all, I have no problem speaking to a dwarf," Paige replied respectfully, "I am inquiring about any employment opportunities you may have here."

Letting her black cloak fall past her shoulders, Paige whipped her long, dark strands behind her to reveal her body in it's tight fitting attire, with just enough cleveage to leave something to the imagination. This should get the point across.

"Should you have any positions in the pleasure giving department, I will gladly take it," with that last bit, she pulled her cloak back over her bare shoulders and awaited the dwarf's reply.

"I can certainly understand a woman with a weapon being quite the imposing guard." Corbin mused as he lifted his mug to his lips and took a hearty swig of the contents.

"A regular? Yes, I suppose you could say so. I'm a student at the University, so it is nice to take a break down here at the Dragon. I'm not a drunk, though that does not preclude me from getting drunk. I see the Dragon as a nice place to meet people. And one also finds out about the goings on of the Citadel. Mass murderers and the like are not overly mentioned in the Citadel - they have other concerns. But I am firmly of the opinion that a murderer is as worthy of magical attention as a demon is." Corbin said. Granted, there were more people capable of dealing with a murderer than a demon, but then if the city watch wasn't doing anything, then someone ought to step in.

"And, of course, there is a far greater propensity for ladies sporting plunging cleavages here than in the University. And that is enough to sell it to me." He said with a grin.

Yosie love being helpful and beamed a smile at Valya as the girl stopped crying, the barmaid holding the handkerchief to the girl's nose, so she could banish the last of her tears away and then tucked the hankie away in a small pouch at her waist used to deposit dirty rags and discarded items left upon the tables that were of little obvious use. "Pleased to meet you, Valya. I am Yosie and I work here at the Burpin Dragon." She chuckled and cast a look at Corbin and Ralph, leaning closer to Valya. "That there is Corbin Dillon and he is quite cute, don't you think. Quite a darling really. He is a student at the University of Magick." Her smile turned a bit impish as she whispered. "And I think I would need to have a closer look to see just how tough he is." She winked and burst into a giggle.

Ralph laughed out as Corbin's assessment of Magda and shook his head. "You 'ave not seen her, 'ave you? She's got a head over both of us. Probably a stone or two 'eavier too." The man's brow arched as the young mage revealed a bit about himself, nodding and grinning when cleavages were mentioned. "Well, I am not so sure about that, me lad. I 'eard quite a bit about librarians. They say those girls can get pretty wild when you approach them right. All them books and reading and stuff leaves a lot of pent up passion. I sure as Nether would not mind checking that claim out some day. Perhaps you could introduce me to some." He grinned and made a show of smoothing his hair with a palm.

Bill grunted when the girl showed some manners though he kept on frowning, his mood not that easily improved. His eyes were on the girl's face, the stool he stood upon helping keep their faces level, the glimpse of Paige's cleavage not interesting him in the least. Her words did get his attention, the old dwarf opening his mouth in shock, staring at the girl in bewilderment. A flicker later his face started turning red, a mighty scowl even by his standards forming. "You better not have been asking what I think you are? This ain't a whore house and it never will be. You can get a room and I don't much care what you do there as long as it does not bother other customers. But, you can not ply your trade from here. Is that understood?" His voice was rather calm and steady, though his fists kept clenching and unclenching, the dwarf ignoring the pain from his burned hand.

The raven-haired, adhiel pulled her cloak back over her shoulders and closed her blue eyes for a brief second, I can't catch a friendly face for nothing. It was true, ever since Paige stepped off of the ship to this city she has been treated very unkindly. She didn't hold that over anyone's head though, it was the life of a woman in the line of work she was in. If you decided to live a life of wenching you had to let stuff like that roll off of your back and carry on. Besides, dwarves weren't the most friendly of folk so Paige wasn't bothered by his words nor his actions. She didn't serve their kind anyway and never would.

Disgusting....

Shaking her dark head, Paige set her thoughts aside and simply smiled at the ugly, old dwarf. If there wasn't any wenching to be done here she would settle for a drink and place to stay for the night. It didn't occur to her until now how tired she was and right now all she wanted to do was sleep.

"Fair enough," Paige replied rather dryly, her mood had taken a complete turn around, "I apologize if I have offended this fine establishment...I just need a quick drink and a place to rest my head for the night. I will be out of your hair by morningtide."

"A stone or two heavier?" Corbin said, raising an eyebrow. "Good grief." He glanced down and patted his flat and muscular belly. "Well, I must admit that I have been trying to work on this, but I keep having things to do." He said apologetically. "I was hoping that mastery of magic would lead to far more efficient indolence. But apparently not." He sighed.

Corbin chuckled as Ralph spoke about lascivious librarians.

"The problem, you see, is that one can never tell which are the naughty ones. In the Dragon the worst you'll get for making that mistake is a slap. In the University they try and set you on fire." Corbin said ruefully. "A glass of red wine tipped over one's head is bad enough, but singe marks will ruin a shirt."

"I'm not entirely sure whether I could sneak you through the doors." Corbin said with a laugh. "And even if I could, I suspect you might set a record for the shortest length of time being on University property and being set on fire. Sadly there is no prize for that accolade." He said with a wink, entirely unaware that here was a prospective University student seated in the very room as them, comparing Corbin's toughness with Yosie.

Valya shoved her own (ironically) unused handkerchief back into her pack. “Corbin, you say?” She bites down on the first knuckle of her right index finger, a habit she had while thinking or…plotting. “At the University? You don’t say.” She chewed thoughtfully. This…man, for that’s what he was, no two ways about it, he would know things. And people. A deep down voice (one stuck at an age much to young to catch onto the subtext of the previous conversation) whispered, “Maybe he’ll be our friend. That’d be ever-so-nice.” Valya didn’t notice it, but the thought swam around in her unconscious.

“You do say.” Val let go of her finger and smiled a touch uncertainly at Yosie. This female camaraderie was such an alien sensation but it made her feel so, so…warm and devilish, like. “You’ll have to introduce us. And maybe I will get a…close up look.” And anyway, she thought, I already know his name…that puts me at an advantage. Gee, things really did seem to be looking up! She grinned slyly, “They didn’t grow them like that on my estate. But…before we get to any socializing...you may have mentioned some…some tasty nibbles, perhaps?” Valya, the eternal optimist, smiled a winningly hopeful smile.

Bill snorted at Paige reply, shaking his head and grumbling a flicker. "Nonsense, lass. You did not insult this fine establishment. You just plucked the wrong string is all. Ye picked a rather nasty profession and while it be yer choice, ye can't do it 'ere. Ye can stay all ye want, and ye'll be welcome to a bowl of stew or something else, but ye keep strange men out of it." His hand went to his balding head and added. "And ye better not get into my hair, or I'll have ta find me one of them toupees, and that won't look pretty."

Yosie has ever been easy to befriend, especially when you were a handsome man, and she caught you ogling her assets and find your response to a tease satisfactory. Corbin has performed quite nicely in the past, and while she was not the sharing type, perhaps this once..... I wonder if she would mind sharing the mage with me. The thought that perhaps Corbin might consider such an idea unappealing did not occur to her. "Sure thing honey. First we get ourselves some marmalade buns and get the energy we will need to treat young gent proper and then I'll introduce you. Wait right here." She smiled and winked and dashed off to the kitchen, leaving Valya alone for a while.

Ralph grinned as Corbin mention naughty librarians, once more revealing a gap in his teeth, where a blade came close to removing half his head, but stopped short of the done deed. "Oh, sonny, but findin' which ones are naughty is 'alf the fun. And I ain't 'xactly unskilled in dodging nasty fire and swords and stuff. I reckon just goin' through the library and pinching butts would end up bad, but if I chat a few girls up they'll reveal more." He figured that while conversation was nice, cold food was not, and started munching on his potatoes and sausages, chewing the stuff up before adding. "And what's the current record for shortest time afore bein' set on fire?"
The diplomacy is the art of saying "Good dog", while you are searching for a big rock.

Paige hid the snort inside at the old dwarf's toupee reply and nodded.
She was relieved that she would be granted to stay but while she was here, Paige was going to hide the fact that she was indeed a wench. It wasn't that she was afraid of another's reaction, it was the fact that she was tired and didn't feel like making any negative acquaintances. Instead, she would have herself a drink and retire to the room that would be given to her for the night.

"Thank you," Paige said, "I think I will just have a drink and retire for the evening." Pulling her cloak around her body a little tighter, she walked into the next room and found a table near the corner of the room. Having a seat, Paige took in her surroundings and wondered what other negativity would come her way.

"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you did not do than by the things you did. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." -Mark Twain
