Cold Snap in the Citadel - Samheen 11-12th

Post by Guenhwyfar »

Early Samheen was always one of the loveliest times of the year in the Citadel -- clear, crisp, balmy weather, sunny and pleasantly cool.

So it was with some suprise that the Citadel awoke on Samheen 11 to find its windows covered with a delicate filigree of frost, the tree leaves looking silvery with a fine dusting of ice. Breath fogged as people went about their morning business, and there was a certain uneasy hush in the city.

But by midday the majority of the frost had melted, although the sun had yet to make an appearance, and the sky was grey and forboding.

Like something out of a dream, the people of Citadel awoke to a winter wonderland on Samheen 12 with soft white flakes drifting slowly down out of the sky. Unprepared for this kind of cold, folks began to dress in more than one layer of clothing and there was a run on wood and coal supplies as those with plenty of coin rushed to purchase what fuel they could before it was gone.

By noon the snow was well above ankle deep and coming down faster and heavier than before, the wind now an issue as it blew the snow. On the docks, there was alarmed shouting and a flurry of activity as a ship tried to make dock, loaded with food and other necessities for the island city. Stong winds were making it difficult for the ship to edge in close enough to unload without crashing into the dock. Other ships were being signaled to hold off and not try for the docks.

By evening, the snow was halfway up the calf of an average man's leg and showed no signs at all of letting up. At this rate, residents figured it would be knee high by morning. Merchants had made out richly, raising the price of foods, warm clothing and heating fuel: wood and coal. But the run on goods had taken its toll and with ships not able to come in with more goods, it looked as if the merchants were going to go on holiday pretty much, at least until the storm died out.

It was going to die out.... wasn't it?
