Dort Recess - Post your summaries here

Post by Morg »

Dear players,

It's that time of year again: the Super Sync is here! For those who haven't experienced it before, it's basically a jump of just over two months to Jygust 30th, the Summer Solstice. The official announcement is here.

As of now, you may not start new threads or join existing ones before Jygust 30th except by agreement with a moderator. Existing threads may of course be played out. To jump to the new date, all you have to do is write a summary of what your character got up to during those two months. Here is a thread with some examples of summary posts.

In addition, you get 10 skill stars to spend. The simple rules for spending these stars can be found in this thread. Remember to justify the skills your character learned in the summary! You can post your summary here and I or one of the other Dort mods will approve it.

What follows is a quick rundown of what happened in Dort during those two months. See you all in Jygust! 8)

Dort Recess Summary

After the conclusion of certain recent events, the island of Dort could draw a collective breath. Things were looking up for the economy. Trade with Aveas via the Imperial Trade Guild had increased, and the Dort Rebuilding Society was giving out grants left, right and centre to promising young businesspeople. For merchants, entrepreneurs and followers of Pecunia it was a good time to be in Dort. As Jygust drew on, preparations started to be made for the Midsummer Festival. This promised to be a riotous event full of celebration and intoxication, particularly in the Midlands and Islay, where worship of the Mother was at its strongest, but also in the city itself, the Pecunian temple happily claiming the festival as their own.

In the Midlands this joyous exuberance hid a greater uncertainty. The depredations of the Storm Lord had already ensured that the yahren's harvest would be a poor one, which did not bode well for the agricultural region's future. Islay was affected, too, as the area's main export - whiskey - had also suffered under the poor conditions. This deficit caused some division among the clans. The O'Briens argued that any move toward independence should be postponed for at least a yahren while the region's economy hopefully stabilised itself. In other clans, such as the Donovans and MacDermots, perception of the problem led to rising tensions and an increased drive for rebellion. Milkhaire was no longer present to unite the clans under a single leader, so no consensus could be reached. For his part, Duke Erwin had his hands full with issues in Sierra, Nazareen and in Dort City itself and so was distracted from the Highlands. Islay thus remained a volatile, simmering cauldron of dissent in the south of the island.

During Jaym the Dwarven Question reared its ugly head again. The Thain of Nazareen traditionally held a vote on the Imperial Advisory Council, but whisperings had begun to arise - some say from the Viceroy of the West's representative Isis - casting doubt on this. Nazareen as a unified entity no longer existed, the subterranean city itself having been overrun by some nameless evil around the time of the War of the One. The remaining dwarves were living in refugee camps or as immigrants in Dort City. So, the suggestion went, why should the Thain retain his vote? In early Jygust, notices went up all over Dort, telling of recruitment for a new expedition. Its aim was to investigate Nazareen and hopefully solve the Dwarven Question once and for all by reclaiming the city. Rumour had it that the expedition was sponsored by none other than the Duke himself.

Captain Kragen had taken over the guard and had definitely shown he was in charge of the scene. The former officer of the Sunfire Brigade had taken reign over the Knot with an iron hand in the night of Chyril 27th and the four following days. There were casualties on both sides, but most of the Waterstreet Gang was rounded up. Among them were Jubal and his right hand Dirty Bill. Their arrest had given insight in the ruckus caused by the assassination attempt on the WSG's leader. Who sent her could only be guessed, but there were rumours within the ranks that Jubal was hiding a Citadelese citizen.

The remaining Gang members had either fled to the Highlands or dispersed through the city keeping their profile as low as they could, some even finding legit jobs. With the crime rates dropping the guard had an easier job and were expanding their jurisdiction to the area surrounding the city too. Meanwhile, business was thriving and loads of people were happy with that. However, forbidden substances were available on the streets if you knew where to look, which was the main concern of the guards these days.

The sightings of Dark Adhiel among the markets and streets became more and more common. These merchants were chosen for their skills in etiquette and diplomacy and slowly they were viewed less as old enemies that would turn on them and more as curiosities and exotic partners. Thus, when their population seemed to grow slowly no one though much of it. Similarly, their buying up old buildings in bad parts of town and refurbishing them was seen as a good thing. Trying out the taverns there became an exciting new outing for the jaded rich.

Then one day in early Jaym, a great stone dome appeared over the dark adhiel section of the city. Quietly, the dark adhiel had bought up entire blocks and raised this ceiling overnight to protect them from the sun. There was panic and concern as first but there was no hostility and the dark adhiel produced documents showing their legal right to do this. Darktown, as the locals named it, returned to being the curiosity it once was, but under the darkness it seemed less inviting than it once was. Especially since the influx of refugees from Gulanadur. The streets of Darktown are crowded now as the landowners of Dort refused to sell the dark adhiel any more land and the refugees still came in waves. Something had to give soon before Darktown spills over into the rest of Dort.

The dark adhiel population were not the only newcomers. For reasons unknown the Eastern Empire offered an envoy to Dort, independent of the envoy to the Citadel. The new arrivals, the booming economy and the settlement of old quarrels meant that, for the inhabitants of the capital at least, Jygust was a time of exciting opportunities. The questions of Islay and Nazareen still hung over the island like a dark cloud, but in the current spirit of exuberance it seemed as if no problem was too thorny to go unsolved for long if someone put their mind to it.

I've edited in a brief summary of the goings-on in the crime scene, courtesy of the legendary Adanedhel.

Thanks also to Tristam, the brains behind Darktown! :)

Bernice's time was not kind, but full of respect.

After the 27th, Bernice was placed in the unit of Löch. Her determination to be a good solider may have rubbed off on her unit, but every mistake she made was met with a terrible price. During one mission, she bluntly refused to bring in a prostitute using considerable force because it was obvious the scared girl was unable to defend herself. She was met with severe corporal punishment which she took better than any man.

She took off her shirt to reveal her terribly battle scarred torso, saying it wouldn't be the first time a man would give her the beating of her life. Afterwards she looked even less like a woman, but the fact that she slowly staggered back into position to resume her duties was whispered through the entire guard.

Those two months was a stand off of willful obedience between her and Löch. Her spirit kept the rest of her unit alive, even when Michael got beaten to a pulp. At one point, he even forbade her family to send her meals. At last, her physical body could not take it anymore, and she passed out. The infirmary sent the Captain a report on her injuries, she was promoted for her own safety.

She was a fierce, but fun leader. Putting up with no crap while still cracking jokes after her time with Loch, she was determined to get back some honor for the Guard. Working with the Dort Rebuilding Society, she wanted to start a "clean up" program for women and children displaced from the clean up of the Knot. This way, the city could get citizens who could work well back into the mainstream so there would be less poverty as well as crime. She also proposed a fighting tournament for the Summer Festival, saying it would be beneficial to see the fighting style of the Dark Adhiel of Darktown so that if they start getting too cheeky, they would have an idea on how to handle them. It might also lure some Waterstreet out which haven't been apprehended yet.

She also wanted respect on the other side with the Waterstreet, fully intending to return to her investigation on the assassin as her original duty was. If Jon's mother and father were also captured in the raid, she would visit them on Jon's behalf as frequently as she could. She would not ask once about their life in the Waterstreet, but try to work to free the mother so that she and her son could at least work together and be a family. Though the crops were down, pottery wasn't suffering so much.

She would also see about getting a sit down talk with Jubal and Dirty Bill. Not for interrogation, but to actually understand their side of the story. She would also confide to Dirty Bill that her mission is to find the assassin and though they were not on the same side, they both wanted her ass. Getting the understanding about the stories on the other side of the fence made her more determined to make the world a little better for everyone. Her sympathy for all people had gotten on the bad side of some of the purists wanting to exterminate all criminals, particularly Löch.

During this time, she also ponders her faith. She never really paid mind to a God of Justice before and wondered which god had answered her prayers on the Knot raid. As if an answer to her pondering, one day a Dwarven Warrior from Nazareen arrived with a token for Bernice directly, saying he was told by the Red Warrior to deliver a token to "The Maiden of Blood". The token was a blood red leather cape with red fox fur. A little confused, she wondered if her Uncle in law had sent the man, but was told she would be key in restoring the bonds between Dort and Nazareen if she would accept the Red Warrior as her god. This being a big decision for her, decided to take time to really ponder it and not dive head first into any relationship. This fact would slightly unnerve those who followed Pecunia or the Mother that she would even put into consideration and god the Dwarves followed.

Talking with her Uncle-In-Law about the situation, she didn't want to just take the blessings like any other stupid follower of gods. Sensing that was the reason behind the Red Warrior's choice, his advice was; "when yer ready, lass. Not sooner, not later".

It was true that those that survived their time under Loch with their spirit intact did well in the guard. Sergeant Potts was now in command of her own squad of a dozen guards and she was given the assignment to start patrolling the outskirts of the Knot in hopes of keeping the gangs there from rebuilding their influence. The Knot was still no place for isolated guards, but marching in large groups was safe enough.

This put Bernice in a useful position to try and enact her reforms for the Knot. The Dort Rebuilding Society was quite leery to invest in the Knot when it was still unclear if all the vermin had been rooted out. Still, a few buildings on the edge of the Knot along her main patrol route were converted into shops where cheap clothing was stitched out of second hand cloth. Quite a few widows and orphans of the Knot came to work in them at first but muggers soon learned when pay day was and the usual routes home. Now only the brave or the desperate venture out to work. It was enough to keep it profitable, but only just.

Jon’s father was injured badly in the raid. He ‘resisted arrest’ and suffered a broken arm and hip in the resulting beating. Bernice’s intervention got him some medical care where others weren’t so lucky. Jon’s mother has gone quietly and Bernice was able to get her released since was not actually charged with anything. She currently works in the clothes shops of the Knot. For all that it is a scary place, it is her home. Jon has been rather distant since the raid on the Knot. He does his work well but some of the spark has gone out of him.

Her attempts to see Jubal were denied. Apparently, Jubal was going to get a full court hearing on the multiple charges of conspiracy, murder, and extortion. Only officers of the court were allowed access to Jubal by order of the Duke. Dirty Bill was no so tightly looked after and she able to get a few words with him in his cell. He didn’t have much information for “Bern” though. The raid pretty much scuttled all his plans to catch the assassin. He was sure she wasn’t done with Jubal yet though. Why all the high security around Jubal? Someone was scared he wouldn’t make it to trial. He gave her a name, Jasko, and the code phrase, “Bill loves his soap, he does.” If anything had been found on the assassin he would know. The trick would be finding him after he went to ground.

Towards the beginning of Jygust, her patrol was transferred to patrol the streets around Darktown. At first it was a quiet assignment. The refugee clogged streets were notorious for petty theft and the occasional drunken brawl but the dark adhiel supported the guard. They wanted the riff-raff cleaned up as much as the guard did.

Yet, the last two weeks had seen a massive increase in the amount of brawls and assaults on her route. It was mostly poor men and women, never adhiel, jumping random passerby with crazed strength. After a tide or two to cool off, the madness leaves them and they claim no to remember attacking anyone. Captain Kragen called a meeting of all the Sergeants and informed them that this was happening all over town, mostly in the Knot, around Darktown, and among the apprentices at the school. He wanted the cause of this found at once.

Just a few days ago, Bernice was stopped on her patrol by a dwarf from far off Kaza Rhun. His name was Baylan Anvilhammer and he sought her out at the behest of the Red Warrior. In a dream, Baylan was told to bestow a token upon the Mistress of Blood. Should she turn to the Red Warrior, then there was hope for Nazareen and Dort to be rebuilt together. He gave her a blood red cape that always felt warm like it had just been worn.

OOC: If you wish to play this encounter out, I will start a thread for you.

Skills have been awarded and wealth was increased to Apprentice. Carry on, guardsman!

Late Chyril & Early Jyam:
Though the political wheels of the Eastern Empire were slow to churn, the rivalry between the great families has never been a mild affair. With the return of Rioja de Valdepenas and all that she had to speak of, the ripples through court reached down even to the lowly daughter of the Ly Gia family, Giang. Her matrons had convened in lengthy discussion. No conclusion was made for some time – but some powers on high were influenced by Rioja’s advice that the Empire turn an eye to the West. The first night Ly Gia Giang was to meet with her nocturnal tutor, she found the old woman (to be addressed as Ly Gia Mai Chu Ba) greeting her with a solemn expression. They bowed, and Mai allowed her to join her on the tatami. Her first words were that the heads of the family had decided to postpone Giang’s training until a consensus had been reached both within the family and by the royal court, but there were still very important tasks to be done. Giang gave her understanding, and Mai informed her that one of her serving girls had to attend her fathers’ funeral far in the North Lands, and many household chores needed performing. For the next couple of months, Giang spent her evening classes at the best of times airing rooms, and at the worst, doing the dirty when night carts and dustmen failed to arrive. All this she suffered in silence, understanding full well that putting voice to her distaste would only worsen the situation – and lower her standing even more.
She continued to train with Thrang in the pre-dawn hour of each day. Given how those who controlled her time had become slightly unwilling to fully dedicate it, these sessions began earlier and earlier, up to a quarter of a mark by Jygust. Though Thrang disappeared afterwards with a skill she herself would aspire to, Giang began to stay behind at the monastery and take part in the greeting of the sun and other daily worships. The sense of tranquillity from these simple times inured her greatly to the toils of the night, lasting all through the tedium of the day. Of the day she had simple chores to perform before learning new ones. As a lady of the household she would need to read fluently, tackle sums, and plan the days’ activities. For hours on end she sat, with instructors, surprisingly few of whom had talent. She learned, but not as much as she could have – or had hoped.

Jygust:
At last action took shape. It was revealed to Giang, officially, that it had not been decided whether she were to stay and work in the Ly Gia household – or accompany madame Ly Gia Mai across the seas to Dort. Their reasoning was thus: the great Ly family was strong in all aspects, save one: iron. Through the scarcity of it in their lands and the unwillingness of other families to trade it to them – for them to patch the chink in their armour – their household had never possessed an abundance of the commodity. Dort, they had learned, was ruled by a ‘goddess’ of wealth. With wealth of their own to spare and goods of such rarity in the West to trade with, Dort may be the key for the Ly family to obtain an agreement with another power in order to obtain iron. And other things, of course, may follow afterwards. Giang would accompany Mai, who would be envoy, to Dort.
That night Mai had elaborated on the indecisiveness of Giang’s orders. Their masters did not know the customs of the West and so the conventional underhand profession – originally intended to be taught to Giang by Mai – was untested there. It was merely a delay that Giang might learn more useful things over the past month, than take up a craft which might only be fully appreciated upon her return to the Empire. ‘Still, there are many things with will not change no matter how far across the world you travel,’ remarked Mai. From there she supplemented Giang’s unarmed combat knowledge by imparting a rudimentary knowledge of weak spots to aim for, and precisely how to attack them. It was, Mai added, imperative, being Giang’s greatest asset after her small frame was considered. Each night she practiced these for a few burns with Mai, and learnt a new gem ever few days.
At long last it was mid-late Jygust and time to leave. Mai, Giang, and a smattering of other servants embarked upon a journey from the Floating City out onto the main, and aimed for the capital of Dort.

Ever since she’d been a little girl, one of Amber Kynterle’s most vivid fantasies has always been to be a bounty hunter. Stories of brave and honorable men and women who risked life and limb to hunt down the very worst criminals and ring them to justice – dead or alive – inspired her to be something more than just a farmer’s daughter

Finally, after long months of wandering after fighting through the countrysides and towns of Dort, Islay, and Hafne, Amber felt she had the skills she needed to start her career in the bounty hunter profession. The only thing that made her put those plans on hold were her friends. But even after countless days of searching for her lost friends and finally finding them, Amber started to realize that she needn’t have waited. Her friends had plans of their own, plans that didn’t include her. She finally understood that if she was ever going to go anywhere or do anything, she’d have to stop counting on others. To be a bounty hunter, she needed to be able to count on people, and she discovered that the only person she could count on was herself.

In the city of Dort, Amber finally found her chance to make a true beginning, or so she hoped. The authorities were looking for people to help round up members of the Waterstreet Gang, primarily around the Docks. She quickly decided to help, and when she arrived at the Docks a few days later, she found that the City Watch already had an operation in full swing. They Watch Captain Kragen accepted her offer of help, and Amber donned their colors and set about the task with eager enthusiasm.

It was not quite as she had imagined it would be. The next several days were long and hard. She slept very little, and saw scant reward for her efforts. The criminals of the Waterstreet Gang were smart; they knew how to avoid the prying eyes of the hunting soldiers. She realized that if she was going to do any good, she couldn’t be identified with the City Watch in any way.

After thinking long and hard, Amber approached her commander, a man named Loch, with her idea. She would pose as the daughter of a merchant that was down on his luck, desperate to make some money to keep from losing his business. For a small fee, the merchant was offering transport out of Dort for anyone that wanted to leave discreetly. In order to protect his identity, the unscrupulous merchant was using his innocent young daughter to make the contacts and lead them to the ship that would take them to safety.

Little did these contacts know that she would not be leading them to safety. In reality, she’d be taking them straight to a waiting group of heavily armed soldiers, spoiling for a fight and ready to make arrests.

Loch agreed to her plan, but decided to add another lure to the trap. Amber was a very attractive girl, he pointed out, and he insisted that she wear a dress a merchant’s daughter might wear – a dress that happened to show more cleavage than she’d ever dared to show in her life, and hugged her hips almost as tightly as her favorite trousers did. It was then that she began to realize exactly what sort of effect her body could have on both men and women.

Amber’s plan quickly bore fruit. Over the next several days, her efforts resulted in the capture of half a dozen of the lesser known members of the Waterstreet Gang, as well as a man that was moderately well known and wanted. She didn’t net any of the most wanted members, of course, but that had been expected; they had other resources at their disposal to escape or hide. Nevertheless, she was quite pleased with her contributions, and so was Loch.

Two weeks after joining the Watch in the operation on the Docks, Amber received a letter from Gwayne, who had simply vanished some time earlier, leaving bother her and Eivlys wondering where he was. It seemed he was in Roque d’Ancourt, and doing well enough for himself for the time being. She didn’t have much time to contemplate the letter or respond to it, as Loch had given her a new target.

The target was a rather attractive young woman in her mid twenties, who called herself Nadia. She wasn’t very well known in the Waterstreet Gang, but apparently, she had been causing the City Watch no end of trouble. Loch wanted her, and he wanted her yesterday. There was one other difference between this woman and Amber’s previous targets. She was to be brought in dead or alive. Her body would do just fine for Amber to collect her pay, and Loch’s approval.

For several days, Amber could find no sign of Nadia. She had no intent to kill her – despite her experiences in battle, Amber had never enjoyed killing – but she was eager to please Loch, and hoping to make a name for herself. She redoubled her efforts, and finally, they paid off.

It was a gloomy, rainy day when she found Nadia on the Docks, and observed her boarding some sort of supply ship under the auspices of a girl looking to make some money as a sort of courtesan or prostitute. Several other women were also boarding; some did so of their own free will, but some were obviously slaves.

Thinking quickly, Amber decided to mimic her target. Already dressed in her “merchant’s daughter” disguise, she dropped the “merchant” part and reassumed her more natural “farmer’s daughter” demeanor. She approached the master of the ship, stating her intent to offer her body to those who would pay for the pleasures it could give. She was taken inside the ship and stripped naked, and once it was clear that she was healthy and pretty, few other questions were asked. She was given her clothes back – and the knives that were cleverly hidden in them – and told to join the other women in the ship’s hold. Humiliated, but confident her cover was intact, Amber settled in for the journey.

As Fate would have it, her path was leading her to Roque, but when or if she would see Gwayne, only Ithrainne and Krynsathis – the God and Goddess of luck and chance that she sometimes prayed to – could know.

Amber was also acutely aware that she was leaving behind Eivlys, the beautiful swanmaiden that she’d fallen in love with. Every morning when she left the home they shared, she promised she would be back. That day, she would not be able to keep her promise. It hurt Amber deeply, but it was for the greater good, she reasoned. She would capture her target when it was safe to do so, and bring her back to Dort. Amber would be back with Eivlys in a few days at most.

But for all her experience, the poor farmgirl was still naïve in matters like this. For she had just started down a path that would take her far away from anything she had ever known or expected to encounter.

And it would not lead home anytime soon…

The sea journey was a long one, but largely uneventful. After almost two weeks on the open sea, the island of Dort came into sight, and then its capital city. Dort was an imposing sprawl of a city, with dozens of quays radiating out into the coastal waters and closely packed rows of solid buildings in dark stone beyond. A small pilot vessel made its way out of the busy harbour to greet them, the pilot himself gawping unashamedly at the Eastern schooner and its unfamiliar design. After a few words were haltingly exchanged, the Ly family vessel was led expertly through the bustle to a vacant berth. They had arrived in Dort.

(OOC: Skills already awarded, and you're approved to post in Dort post-Recess! Feel free to start a new thread in Watertown or in fact wherever takes your fancy. :))

Amber Kynterle
Stories of bounty hunters were one thing, but the reality was a little different. The stories, for example, didn't mention the terrible rage and fearsome threats of revenge directed at Amber by her "contacts" once they realised they had been betrayed. One in particular, a dark-skinned Amunic man named Jarullah, left a bad taste. As he was hauled away by the Watch, his white eyes never left Amber, and slowly and softly he repeated the curses he would call down upon her and the terrible things that he, and the ancestor-spirits, would do to her if they ever found her again. Jarullah was the most high-profile of Amber's catches, a medium-scale drug runner for the Water Street Gang, and netted her a tidy sum of money as well as the grudging approval of Löch.

But ultimately her success was to bring her little of value for her immediate future. Money, and the respect of the Dort City Watch, were commodities of no particular worth in the bowels of the barque with its cargo of whores. And so, on a rainy day in Jaym, Amber found herself on a ship bound for Roque d'Ancourt, sailing out of the same berth that Ly Gia Giang would find herself arriving into a month later.

(OOC: Skill stars granted, and bon voyage! You may wish to get in touch with Gutter Rat in Roque to let him know you're coming. :) I hope to see you back here at some point - the island will miss you!)

It had been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for Reim since he arrived in Dort, joining the Waterstreet Gang, helping Claudio escape their clutches, chasing a faceless assassin, running into a beautiful red-haired pirate and then being asked by her to leave on a bodyguard mission.

The evening of which he had been asked to do so had been a rather sour one for he had very little information on the assassin and his theories kept leading him to dead ends, that and he was regretting letting Claudio escape. That night he decided to head down to the Three Foxes Pier, a place where Claudio had told him, a couple of days earlier, to tell Nestor Granger to go in order to pick up some cargo from someone named Ainslie. Reim went their out of curiosity just to see what was there and found that it was a rather normal looking pier with nothing out of the ordinary. It was after thinking and praying to the Pantheon that Reim was discovered by Claudio who was busy waiting for someone else.

The Pantheon had apparently come through for him again and he was quick to call Claudio up on the promise he had made earlier, which was to help Reim find his edge over the other ambitious young men be it a physical one or a mental one, as well as propose a deal of sorts to him. Explaining the situation to him Reim stated to Claudio that in order to clear his name he should provide assistance in finding the assassin at least then his credibility would be boosted somewhat. After the discussion Reim left with Ruby.

At the beginning of the journey things were relatively calm with Ruby flirting with Reim the way she had back in Dort and the others going about their duties on board the ship. But the atmosphere on board the ship soon turned to one of suspicion and accusation as several of the sailors on the ship began to accuse Ruby of being the assassin, Reim himself still suspected her in some way but he couldn’t make the accusation without a decent amount of proof. A fight soon broke out amongst them as the sailors attempted to kill the redhead. Reim went about doing what Ruby was paying him to do and tried to protect her as best he could, during the course of the fighting he received a gash across the bridge of his nose and a shallow stab wound in his thigh. His blade skills were put to the test and pushed as a majority of the fighters were far more skilled than him it was probably his prayers to the Pantheon that brought him through. He was also lucky in that several other sailors had opted to jump in on Ruby’s side and the fighting was quelled relatively quickly.

Once they had arrived in the Citadel Reim stayed with Ruby for a bit in order to let his wounds heal up. He had spent a few years in the Citadel prior to his journey to Dort and decided to spend some time with his parents also. Sticking with Ruby Reim never had a dull moment but behind his shocking, icy blue eyes Reim was studying her making sure that he never missed a word or action; he wanted to see whether or not he could catch her out for the two had become rather familiar and relaxed around one another, if anything they were made a rather good team. Once his wounds had healed up Reim decided to make his way back to Dort with the money he had made with Ruby, he knew it wouldn’t be long before he ended up with her again anyway but he had other business to sort out.

Things weren’t as easy as he expected them to be on his return to Dort. He found that his employer was in jail and that the rest of the Water Street Gang had been splintered and scattered. Word was that Jubal had been hiding a Citadeleese citizen and considering that information Reim stayed relatively quiet he made sure that he avoided any law enforcement types by using his knowledge of Dort as well as the streetwise thinking he’d managed to pick up. On one occasion he had been caught out and had been arrested on suspicion of being involed with the gang. He spent several nights in jail whilst being questioned. He knew he had to tread carefully and made sure that he didn’t let any information go.He weaved his way around the truth though this became more and more difficult as those who were interrogating him beat him up as a means of intimidating and breaking him. After finding no fault with him he was released and went legit in order to turn the eyes of the law away from him.

He quietly went about investing money in legit businesses. Mainly the money was invested in merchant trades to do with selling different goods such as alcohol, household items and even clothing but also he began to invest in property. By doing this he began to become involved with the more accepted crowd of nobles and merchants. On the other hand Reim continued his investigation on the assassin quietly though information was scarce and didn’t seem to be coming through. He was beginning to reach his end with the investigation for he had no way of getting close to Jubal or Dirty Bill; he needed Claudio and Ruby for they were the ones who could break the whole case open.

Guido arrived in Aveas with a curious mixture of emotions: elated at his ability to fly the airship; exhausted from the nervous energy he had expended during the flight, and, apprehensive at what the future might hold. He was also a little wet from his dunking in the harbour. The elation vanished rapidly when he and the remaining members of the expedition were asked to account for the loss of the ship and crew. Fortunately, the explanation appeared to satisfy the local officials and Guido soon found himself back in the Mouth after another stomach-churning voyage through the portal.

The historian had kept regular notes during the expedition and so it only took a little while to complete his report to Sfidante. The senior curator was fascinated by Guido’s account and the young man was forced to spend long hours in cross-questioning about the details of the expedition. Once he had finished the debriefing, he broached the subject of his promised promotion to full curator. Sfidante promised to consider the matter.

Jyam

Whilst he was awaiting news of his possible advancement, Guido was called upon to participate in a number of small scale archaeological excavations just outside the Mouth and his knowledge of archaelogy improved significantly from this practical experience. He learnt the rudiments of examining the landscape for tell-tale signs of hidden structures, and the basics of excavation. He also did lots and lots of digging; his nails would never be the same again.

Between excavations, Guido continued his studies, specialising in classes dealing with matters of the mind. He found the exercises and lessons he received extremely useful in assisting him in clearing his mind of outside influences and sharpening his focus. He became increasingly interested in developing his skills further, but the masters at the library insisted that much long training was required and the young historian became increasingly frustrated with his tutors. Indeed, once or twice he had long arguments with them and he sensed that he had offended one or two of his teachers.

Eventually, Sfidante called Guido back with the news that he was to be promoted; however, the library authorities were so impressed by his field report that he was to take on the position of field archaeologist, taking a leading role in Lycaeum expeditions to far corners of the world. Guido couldn’t help but feel that the tutors he had argued with might also have had some influence on this. Indeed, his friend Lucan commented that some of the master’s thought that Guido’s action-packed adventure overseas had left him more suited to outdoor pursuits than dry academic endeavour. Guido was coming to much the same conclusion and he awaited his first expedition with anticipation, spending some time brushing up on his sword skills given his experience of battle in his previous overseas foray.

Jygust

It was in early Jygust that Sfidante gave Guido news of his first assignment. He was to travel to Dort, where he was to be contacted by a local historian with further details of the mission. Sfidante refused to divulge anything further when pressed for details and Guido had the distinct feeling that there was something about the expedition he preferred not to discuss.

And so it was that on the 29th of Jygust, Guido arrived in Dort, letter of introduction from Sfidante stowed safely in his baggage. The senior curator had arranged accommodation for Guido in the Drunken Duck and promised that he would be contacted the next day to receive full details of the mission.

(OOC: Reim, I'm holding off on yours until I get the go-ahead from Adanedhel. :))

Guido Cercatoro
One thing Guido gained from the trip to Terra Nova was the respect of Carlotta Serafini. The tall, serious cartographer had produced a passable set of maps and sketches during the expedition. While she simply didn't have enough time to produce anything detailed, it was enough at least that future flights to Aveas wouldn't be surprised by the presence of a random landmass to the west of the island. She indicated afterwards that Guido would be welcome to contact her through the Naturalist Society if he ever needed to.

Lucan, and the shy Gianna, were both genuinely glad to see him back in the Mouth. However, someone as astute as Guido who'd spent as much time in the Lycaeum as he had couldn't fail to notice that something didn't quite add up. A secret of some sort was being kept - a big secret, and possibly the best kept secret in all of World's Mouth. The presence of this secret was possibly what kept Milanas, Shannah and the other senior tutors from allowing him to progress further in his studies of mental focus. Head Curator Milanas in particular was distinctly cool towards Guido after one altercation.

The expedition to Dort received little explanation indeed - and so Guido found himself in the cosy surroundings of the Drunken Duck Inn with little idea of what awaited him on the island.

(OOC: Approved, and skills granted! :) You may go ahead and post at will.)

Reim Ceoruth

ooc: Negatory on the Claudio part.

As Reim searched the Three Foxes Pier, Claudio was nowhere to be seen or found, neither did he seek any contact if he was around. Instead he saw faintly a person at the end of the Pier. By the jacket, boots and a fitting tricorn hat it was probably a ship's captain. His long hair waved in the windless air. As a breeze blew by and a howling could be heard, the man seemed to have vanished.

The fight aboard the ship resulted in wounds for Reim. The ship's doctor however was sure it would heal and he would be up and running soon enough as he were ever before. He did all he could to help the achadhiel and kept the wound clean with spirits and stitched it. It wasn't a very good stitch and would leave a scar on his thigh, but it'd do for now.

When in the Citadel, only few times did Ruby escape his eyes. Those few times it was in the morning, and she usually came back from the market afterwards, carrying bags with fresh vegetables for that evening and went about making them breakfast. Her house was small, but it suited one well if one were to live there. He had been paid for his work cash, enough to live at least month without working and having some left to do his own bidding with.

After he got out of jail again, for the accusations of having ties with Jubal & company couldn't be proven, things went rather well on the legit market. Several business deals went pretty good and soon he had some more money to invest. Though there was no property for sale right now, Reim had been able to invest and become a minor shareholder in a few of the shops that lined the streets of Dort. None of the nobles got close to him, but a lot of the merchants knew his name by now and some could be considered "friends". One rubbed another's back to get things done.

The investigation into the assassin was very dissatisfying, as he couldn't make any results. Claudio was still nowhere to found, and Ruby was still in the Citadel. Who knew when his tide was turning for the young aspiring criminal gone legit?

Skills
All skills granted. Wealth at apprentice for the reward of bringing Ruby to the Citadel alive and the businessdeals. Right now, you think you can keep this style of living up for at least another month. After that depends on the shops you have shares in and whatever you make in between for yourself.

There was a lot to ponder in the aftermath of the hard-won battle at Jerrhyn's Point, and Gavin was strangely quiet when the boat finally arrived to pick them up. He did insist they do not leave right away, going back to the crashed Stormbringer and sought the mortally wounded Captain Rime. Asking the sailors for the proper way to bury a follower of Vargaz he made sure he received it, seeking out the ship’s log and trying to learn the name of Not Important, wanting him to be remembered for what he had done for them all that day. Seeking a promise from Captain Withers that he would come back and carve the man’s name in the rocks from which he leapt into the sea, he made another promise in silent. A promise to himself that he would remember the dead sailor and come some day to honor his death, wishing he had a bit more time to know the man before they were torn apart.

He did not go back to the Count, sending a short note that he would pay Johann a visit when they were done with other stuff, something more important than a story and a praise. He went to the Clans and sought out the right to speak at their council before the assembled warriors. He did not preach or tell them what to do. He simply told them a story, laced with emotions that swirled through him that day. It was the inner battle that raged within him that got the center stage, and he tried to impress the importance of drive and will to live on the minds of the assembled warriors. He explained that if the need arose again, someone will have to face the God of Storms and that such a man should not be someone willing to lay down his life for others. It would be a man who valued his own life and who was willing to do almost anything to save it, and to face any danger and obstacle to overcome that danger. He or she would need to fight and fight well, and that would be all that the Red Warrior asked for. The will to fight and face anything, to do what it takes to accomplish a goal and to emerge victorious. In death you could not witness your victory and see that the fruits of it were those you fought for. You could do that only if you lived. And he did live and was glad for it. He stood ready to answer any and all questions the people might have, calmly and with endless patience, spending a few more weeks with the people of Islay. He sought Milkhaire after that at Jerhynn’s Point, spending their time together talking and discussing any subject that struck their fancy, seeking to learn something about the person behind the image of the white-haired leader of the Clans. He waited for Syrawenn to be done with her own business before he packed and left for Hafne.

The Count was given an accurate account of what they faced, and he too was told of what would be needed of the man chosen to face the Stormlord if the angry divine reared its ugly head in the future, asking that the name of Not Important be honored in the future by the people of Dort. In a way, Gavin felt indebted to the dead sailor who gave his life to save them all, a debt none of them would ever be able to pay in full. Johann von Bleibheir too was given a chance to ask questions and to inquire of the details of what they faced, though Gavin left the telling of the other parts of the story to those who took part in it. He knew he did not win alone and that without the others, all would have been lost.

It was his mother that he visited next, spending a week with her, going back to his childhood days and enjoying the peace and quiet for a few days, being simply Liana’s son during that time, leaving his sword and armor at rest and doing some simply chores his mother could not do alone. He knew the world still waited out there but for that time he ignored everything but the tiny little oasis of peace that was he knew from his childhood days.

There were few more visits he needed to make before Syrawenn and he left the island of Dort for a while and traveled west to King’s Court. First of those was Vaga Hex, the old witch who helped them a lot in the past. This time he did not ask her for help, but sought her merely to give her a small gift, leaving the crudely hand-carved wooden statue of her. If she asked he would tell her of the Jerhynn’s Point, but for once he did not seek to burden her with his or the troubles of world at large, merely keeping her company for a few marks, helping with some of her chores if she allowed him. With a smile he left the old witch, wondering if they would meet again.

Dort Abbey was his next stop and he sought the Abbot and Gaelena if she was still there, spending a few days in talk and discussion, seeking peace and quiet of the Abbey more than anything else at the time. Next, he sought the city of Dort and a way to talk to Steward Dein ist Mein, asking how the man felt after his nasty experience with the demoness Prorurbia a few months ago. He did not seek to judge the man, merely offering him to talk with someone who knew his secret, and parting ways with a simple request that the badge Steward gave him and Abner in those days be replaced since the one he was given had been lost. At last he sought out Duchess K’mith should he be permitted and explained to her where the book on demons from her library was. He told her of those days in the past and how at that time Abner and he needed all the knowledge they could get, and promised to enter her private chambers through the front door next time, and only if he was invited. He expressed his regret that he could not return her book, having lost track of the bright, if odd little gnome Abner, who had been his companion in those troubled days.

With all that done, he was ready to depart from Dort, spending a few nights at the Drunken Duck, remembering the friends he had known since he left Hafne and wondering where they all were now. He tried to find a trace of Amber, but he did try too hard, knowing that red-head would have left him a clue of her whereabouts if she wanted to be found. He wrote a letter to the priests of Red Warrior in Citadel, telling them of what happened at Jerhynn’s Point, and promising to share the tale in person when he had in time. He did not quite expect them to believe him, but then again he did not do what he did for praise or glory, but because it needed to be done and nobody else was trying hard enough. In the end all that was left was for the pair of them to board the ship, and set sail for King’s Court.

Now what?

It was a question which often arose in Syrawenn's thoughts. As she lived her life from day to day there never was much of a plan to it and if there was, she usually saw it in shambles shortly after.

Yet this time had been different.

The Stormlord had been defeated.
Not through wild heroics or zealous prayers -or at least that was not as the girl saw it- but through simple stubborness and a little trust in what a good group of people could do.

It felt strange to be victorious.
It felt weird to be alive.
It felt insane to actually accomplish something that was worth mentioning. With the Storms dying out, Dort had a chance at survival and with that, Gavin's mother. Alright, so Syrawenn was still not entirely sure if she felt comfortable around any parent, but as far as mothers went, this one proved to be fairly decent.

And now the woman was safe.
Thanks to her son.
And a bunch of weirdo's.

Now what?

She should probably feel all epic and fulfilled now that they had done what they set out to do, but instead the girl was left with a nagging feeling of missing something.

There were still some promises to keep, of course, and while Gavin set off to spread the story, so Syrawenn made sure Maeve got the thanks she deserved after cutting the discussion short about lending them a ship or not. The youngster was not entirely sure if Maeve would appreciate the charcoal drawing of the victorious ship leaving a mangled Stormlord behind, but it was at least something she had created herself.

Next to that there was her promise to the Koreymen. Technically she had kept her end of the bargain, but the hyperactive girl felt very strongly about erecting the stone circle they had seen being taken down by the Domininies. To this end she made sure the right people in the right places heard the right story -the ones with the stones protecting Dort and the entirety of Islay, with the need for a symbol now that they were safe again, with the secret hopes that this circle would bring back the Koreymen, forgotten as they were, perhaps with trade picking up again now that Dort was so obviously blessed by the gods...There were enough angles to the story to get at least some attention focussed into the right direction.

In her frantic attempts to bring back the Koreycircle Syrawenn learned that people would listen to a comment much more often than they would to a question. They were even more prone to listen if she simply fired off what she needed done, rather than leave time for them to think.
It was an interesting discovery, to say the least.

Firing off was a repeating theme as the girl -much chagrined that she had not even fired the crossbow once during their encounter- practiced her crossbow skill every day for marks on end with a singlemindedness that left her with blisters, a frown and a much-bitten tongue-which insisted on sticking out ever so slightly at every shot.

Finding a smaller crossbow was also on her list of 'things not to forget', for she had not forgotten how the weapon had hindered her more than it had helped her.

Other than that many days were spent simply coming with Gavin to the several visits he had on his agenda. There wasn't much for the girl to add to any of those talks and since the bearded man seemed to be doing quite well, she spent her time sketching the surroundings and the people in them as a personal reminder of what had transpired.

Slightly relieved that Milkhaire was not returning with them, Syrawenn only had to make sure she didn't act too strange around Gavin's mother. She understood all too well the need Gavin felt to be with his relative. The girl took some distance to allow the big man his time, making sure she was around whenever he did his chores. It wasn't hard to occupy herself. Now that the immediate threat was over, she had a lot of things to ponder about, after all.

Family, amongst others.

As time passed, the girl grew more restless with each day, feeling the burden of her unfinished conversations and actions stronger than before. With the Koreycircle well on it's way and all the loose ends tied up in Dort, a part of the child inside yearned to see her parents; to talk to them and finally be able to discuss what had happened all those yahren ago.

With this fixed in mind, Syrawenn made the offer to Gavin to travel abroad to the Western Kingdom, to which he agreed.

And what if they won't listen?
Then what?

Returning to Dort, Gaelena remained quiet, contemplating all that she had seen and done. It was strange, to have been the conduit for a goddess. She felt vindicated in her belief in the Mother, but also strangely unsatisfied.

She settled back into her life at the Abbey, her studies continuing. She focused on perfecting her craft. She set bones, helped in surgeries, created herbal salves, ointments and teas to help with the healing. Yet, with each passing day, her mind wandered back to the Citadel and her family. It seemed so long ago when she had stormed out of her father's house, vowing never to return. But so much had happened, so much had changed in her.

When Gavin visited, she made time for him each day, finding his company refreshing. For some reason, he reminded her of her nephew, Claudius, though the two couldn't be any more different. Gavin was all high emotions and stubborn concentration, where Claudius was a peacemaker by nature. But the more time she spent with the warrior, the more she was convinced it was time to go home.

After his departure, a letter arrived. Her location had finally made its way back to Figaro, who wrote to tell her that her mother was deathly ill. She went quickly to the Abbot, informing him of her need to leave. He understood and in a few short days, she was on her way to the portal.

Gavin Tylvan

From the ships logs Gavin learnt that Not Important's name was actually Mickey Delarue. Upon his request, Captain Withers vowed that he would do as Gavin had asked. The clansmen as well as his other audiences were somewhat hesitant in their belief regarding the stories, but were good listeners and their filii (note: bardic druids) assured him the tale would be kept alive in their clans for generations to come.

Both his mother and Vaga Hex were happy to have him visit, reluctantly giving him some chores to do for them. The latter didn't express it, but from her body language Gavin could read she was delighted with the present.

At the Abbey a messenger arrived, asking for their presence at Castle Von Bleibhier. After the story was retold to the Steward, the Duke joined the trio and invited them for dinner. It was only after dinner that, without much words, he handed each of them a scroll. Upon opening, Gavin could read that he was appointed Baron of Bruách, a plot of land with a few villages in the coastal region that was hit worst by the storms.

Upon his request for an armor, the Duke gave him access to the Sunfire Brigade's armory. The quartermaster had just an armor for him. A slightly butter yellow hued metal armor made by the dwarves of Nazareen. In the middle of it's chest was a big sun with rays extending in each direction.

Syrawenn Lwyn

Maeve told Syra it was the least she could do and accepted the drawings which the lady had made. As she made the plans for the Koreycircle and started to find people to help her, there were vast numbers of clansmen who were more than happy to work with her. They buried the feelings they had toward one another and worked together on the Koreycircle. Their shamans blessing the circle and painting and carving delicate scenes of walking stones onto the stone surfaces. Some painted a eyes and a mouth on a few of the stones, to depict a Koreyman.

She gave Gavin and his mom space, and sometimes, when Gavin was doing chores, his mother came to her. Talking to her, saying she understood Gavin had to go with her.

At the Abbey a messenger arrived, asking for their presence at Castle Von Bleibhier. After the story was retold to the Steward, the Duke joined the trio and invited them for dinner. It was only after dinner that, without much words, he handed each of them a scroll. Upon opening, Syrawenn could read that she was appointed Baroness of Creiddyladd, a plot of land with a few villages in the coastal region that was hit worst by the storms, next to Bruách.

Both her estate and that of Gavin were, as Cristobal Scion had advised, put into the hands of one of his trusted advisors. Of course, for a small fee, but that would be earned by trade that came from the lands. Soon, he promised, the areas would be flourishing again.

Gaelena Denaro

Gaelena had gone back to the Abbey and was taken in as a sister among the priests and priestesses. They helped her along and tried to teach her in the arts of healing and herbs. It was then that her friends visited her and merely a day later a messenger arrived from the Duke. He had invited them all to come over.

After the story was retold to the Steward, the Duke joined the trio and invited them for dinner. It was only after dinner that, without much words, he handed each of them a scroll. Upon opening, Gaelena could read that she was appointed Baroness of one of four areas surrounding the Abbey.

Upon her request, the Abbey took care of the lands while she was gone. Happy to have this liberty to grow extra herbs and vegetables on Gaelena's land to survive seasons to come.
