The Eternal Palace: Heart of Winter ~ Aldym Zorastryl

Post by Guest »

Timestamp: Samheen 18th, Morningtide

Aldym pulled his fur cloak tightly about him, one day he would be as much a part of this world of biting chill as the Ice Queen who mentored him. But until then he didn't intend to freeze to death, here or anywhere else. He rested one gloved hand on the rapier at his side, and leant on the edge of the ornate balcony with the other, feeling the cold seep into his palm. The fledgeling mage looked out from the Heart of Winter, the great tower at the centre of the vast Eternal Palace - an ice castle as large as the Citadel itself and silent as the grave. He looked out at the island it had taken him so long to cross, from here he could see it all - the hills that spouted their thick and acrid smoke from countless craters, the valley with a floor of thick, viscous blood and the vast, dead black trees of some ancient forest. He saw the beach where Whitey had slaughtered countless of the vast, black, blubbery selkies - then his gaze reached the hills, over which he knew lay the hovel of the strange old man who had guided him to this vast palace.

He called himself mage now, not sorcerer or magician. His mind groping at a terrible, horrifying and fundamental truth that Lisandra had shown him the path to realising. He knew now, he was sure, how to join Lisandra and her foes at the peak of power - to wield the impossible and forgotten magics of the First Kingdom itself. Lisandra could coach him in parts of the puzzle, as indeed she did, but the last was something he must find himself. He sighed, he could not afford to spend time idly gazing from the balconies of the Heart of Winter. He must either head to the library, or find a way to keep his martial skills in practice - Aldym did not intend to be some corpulant vizier who could weild the forces of the Aether and nothing else. Mind and body must both be strong, or the power he sought to become would doubtless tear him asunder.
