Differing opinions - Coronation sidethread- Hagen and Fia

Post by Grey Wolf »

The Great Hall was the heart of Citadel, yet it was quite close to the entrance, and thus the Priestess of Pan, and her tall, blond escort did not have to go far to reach his coach. As they stepped out of the Hall, four heavily armed and armored escorts fell behind them, keeping a respectable distance, but keeping close just in case they were needed. Dressed in royal blue tabards, they glared at the trio of light blue Condotierre as they walked past them, the tension between the men almost palatable, though Hagen did not show a hint of concern, smiling and chatting with the girl at his arm as if he had not a single worry in the entire world. “I do not believe I have introduced myself, though we have definitely met. I am Frederic Hagen, Ambassador of the Western Kingdom in Citadel. I hope you are keeping better company these days than you did back then.”

His voice was calm and gentle, and he did not sound accusing, simply chatting politely while touching a somewhat sensitive subject. “I recognize your robes as belonging to Pan’s religion. I fear his followers and followers of Dominicus have not quite gotten along very well in recent past. Though admittedly most of the tension was created by a certain opportunist fraction of Oneist faith. Both our sides have suffered due to it, though I understand if you still hold my country responsible, at least in part, for what has happened.” They were moving through a looming hallway, the enormous front doors of the castle almost fifty paces away.

It could be almost any leave taking from any event as natural as it seemed. Instead it was the coronation of a Caesar and she was exiting with the Western Kingdom's ambassador. That on it's own was quite strange given the recent world history. Fialessa for once, probably the first time in her spontaneous life, was looking at events in terms of opportunities. This she thought certainly had to be one. Not in the way many look at opportunities, for wealth or power... but an opportunity to repair things for the better... The easy, friendly, way in which Hagen led her out to his coach was in it's way surprising to her. His current manner impressed her as being quite unlike she'd initially judged upon her first night in the Citadel. Her estimation of the blond Oneist improved.

It wasn't hard to notice the undercurrent of animosity from his guard as they passed the Condotierre, it was practically expected. Fialessa couldn't blame them, she'd no love for the Mouthies either. As Hagen seemed unruffled she too tried to hide her own distaste, and turned her focus and her smile on his introduction. “Well I am certainly trying for far less stuffy...” She grinned merrily trying to imagine what Mister Motrice would think of being considered bad company. “But I am certainly pleased to know you on somewhat better footing than that long ago day.”

She wasn't sure if ... why... he felt the need to say what he was about their faiths and the losses – it seemed something like an apology. But clearly it was a direction that pointed toward change. “Terrible things have happened... there's blame and responsibility enough to be had surely, some more than others...” Fia agreed solemnly. “But kings, countries and following orders... I may personally feel animosity toward groups and kingdoms but those must be overcome for the greater good. Repairing rifts and healing our deities...” She trailed off feeling like she was perhaps too idealistic.

Hagen may have been given greater responsibilities and found himself feeling out of depth with his new duties, but he was still very much the man he had been before, and thus did not think honesty was a bad thing in any situation. "Using magick for spectacle is not only dangerous, but also irresponsible and childish. I heard the magus has become a professor at the University of Magick. I merely hope he has learned that magick is a tool to be used for betterment of others, rather than a way to impress common people, or in more severe cases instill fear in them." As they walked Hagen's boots fell heavily down onto the ground with each step he took, footsteps echoing against the walls, as he walked at a pace Fialessa could easily follow.

After her words he remained silent for a few footsteps, looking down towards the floor in thought. "It will take a lot of time for the rifts to be healed and I am not even sure the rifts that exist now are meant to be closed. They can serve as a warning of what has happened in the past and a reminder of the mistakes we have all made." He paused and stroked his well-trimmed beard briefly. "But, the war is over and whether we like it or not, both our sides lost. Some lost more than others, but that is besides the point." Then the old Hagen spoke again. "Delving into who was justified and right and who was wrong will only lead to further conflict and weakening of both sides. Even turning against common enemy would not serve much purpose at this point of time. We need time to heal and to see if we can aid each other in that process. I am glad to hear that at least some of your faith feel that way."

Fialessa nodded adding in an affirmative vocal acknowledgment. She did agree that open use of magick when other means were available, was foolhardy. Of course for some it was just second nature. She had assumed such from Elvin.

“That is an interesting perspective, perhaps you are right in that we do need to be reminded. I do not understand the purpose of leaving raw wounds ragged if through some sort of cooperative as you say they can be healed – perhaps bringing those together that might never have...” She paused looking upward at him. Honestly she might never have spoken to one such as he, but she had felt compelled to bridge a gap. Or to at least try. Her lips quirked another small smile. “I can only hope to foster that which I feel within others of my faith. And so now it is only a matter of clasping hands and moving forward. Perhaps finding in each of us a common ground is only a start, where our differences can serve to teach us tolerance or better acceptance...”

Despite being a paladin, Hagen was also a diplomat, or at least he was made one when they appointed him Ambassador and differing goals clashed in the tall blond warrior. He kept struggling to do what was right as he had done for so many yahren and yet still do what he needed to do for the benefit of his country. This time perhaps those two goals could be reconciled at least for a little while and something good created from the problem they faced. “My country is facing a period of change and I can not guarantee that any promises I keep will be honored to the letter, but I would do all in my power to ensure so. I think you need to know how things stand before we even try to find a way to heal the wounds. It all depends on when the Kingdom gets a new King and also on who the new King will be. There are several candidates and right now it is yet unclear who will get chosen as best according to his lineage and other qualities.”

As they reached the coach, blond paladin held the door open for the Panling, offering her his hand as support in climbing in, waiting until she was settled before joining her, instructing the driver to stop by the Temple of Pan first. As the coach rumbled into motion, Hagen pulled the curtain away and looked outside for a flicker. “I think an example of cooperation would be good. For if we show that Panlings and Oneists can accomplish something good together, perhaps others will try it as well. You must understand that even the invasion of Aveas was never our King’s plan. He merely sought to capitalize on the gains World’s Mouth made without his knowledge.” He sighed and shook his head. “But, that is not what I wanted to talk about. It is bad form to base future plans on badmouthing the others. What I truly wanted to say is that will of Dominicus might have been falsely interpreted. He was merely worried of the seemingly bad influence follower of other religions had on his faithful. Perhaps it was just circumstances, but much of the problems the Kingdom faced in recent history have been sparked by the followers of what we call pagan religion. And with Inquisition’s rise in power we became even more aggressive. Sadly, we both know how it ended. And as we can’t either take over the Aveas colony from the Mouth, nor help you regain it back, I was thinking we ought to start small and build from there. A vote on the council would be such a start. And I am offering you my support in gaining it.”

The young adhiel listened intently, this being the first real information she'd ever taken in about the Western Kingdom first hand. And by it's ambassador... she felt as though she were actually learning more of the world as a whole. “Have you a preference of either a person or specific sort of quality for your new king?” She asked curiously.

Fialessa did not waver at taking his hand for help into the coach. She didn't wish to give any sign that she was not open to trust. He spoke on then about what happened and the actual intentions of the Western Kingdom “It is hard I think to try to be charitable or not bitter when things have gone so terribly wrong. I feel that the simple fact that you and I – such as we are, and who we are... the fact that we can sit here serenely rational... It is a start, Lord Hagen, and unless we try we will never know if indeed it will change anything.” She was uncertain if she'd be the most appropriate person, but then Vanir was so bent on his own agendas of which he shared so little. Perhaps as her only concern anymore remained the Panlings... perhaps after all.

“How would we proceed from here then?”

For a flicker the paladin hesitated torn between Frederic Hagen, Paladin of the One, and Frederic Hagen, Ambassador of Western Kingdom in Citadel, the twin facets of the blond man fighting over dominance often since his appointment. "I have little say in the matter, milady, but I have faith in the One and in those who are making the choice. We need a good King now, someone who will be able to help us rise and make us flourish once more. But, more than that we need peace and time to recover." He was diplomat at that moment, not yet trusting the girl next to him to truly say what he thought. "Of course since the person sitting upon the throne must be of royal blood, the selection is limited and furthermore the Kingdom does not elect its ruler like the Empire. I do not think there has been a situation like this in our entire history."

He merely nodded when she agreed that the two of them at least could work together, as it was a sign that perhaps their people could do the same. Fialessa's question made Hagen pause, as the paladin pondered the obstacle or rather obstacles before them. "The first step I think should be to give you some popularity with your own people and show how much you can accomplish. I doubt Council members will consider you as a potential candidate if they do not know of you. Especially since I have little to no power there. I do have some resources I can place at your disposal. So, rather than me telling you what our first step is, why don't you tell me how I can help you become a more prominent member of your faith?"

She nodded at his words, somehow unsurprised that his faith in his deity and his superiors were to make the right choice. Fia figured him to be more a man of the sword than that of diplomacy. And yet he seemed not to be wearing that mantle ill-fittingly. Perhaps the seed of admiration had been planted, time would tell though. “How is it with your kingdom then? Are there very many contenders?” She asked with a genuinely interested look, wanting to know more of the place and people her own had just recently fought and feared. Fialessa had expected a measure of caution from Hagen, too. After all not so long ago they were on opposing sides in belief if not in actual action. For some reason she wanted to ask him questions, find out more about him ... But then she did not wish to appear too nosy, especially into the man's personal business. Her brother had often told her that curiosity was her worst trait. And so she held back somewhat. “True understanding might better pave the road we travel. But I hope for your sake that a good king is found...”

“Yes, I am not that widely known, being only a newer priestess and before that only had some small interest in my skills as a dancer... Our priest, Vanir, may have some thoughts. His current dealings are in other areas and thus perhaps it would be better for me to handle some of the political responsibilities of the temple.” She wondered momentarily what Vanir would think and if he would support such an action. But for the good of the Panlings she was willing to try anything. Absently her hand reached toward the pipes she wore. Since Pan had gifted them to her she'd scarcely separated them from her person. The gifts of Pan's art was his voice, perhaps that would be of some service. “Notice amongst Panlings may not be as difficult as I imagine. Pan himself has given me a gift, mayhaps I should seek out that course as well. In the interim we should find some measure or another to collaborate upon to show our unified interests – that too should bring forth a bit of prominence for us both?” She looked to him to gage his reaction with a study of his features.

Fialessa had no idea how difficult it was to answer her question regarding Western succession, as personal feelings the paladin had warred with his post and the need to represent the official stance of his country. "Not many, but the nobles and officials can not agree who has the clearer claim for the throne. Count Joris Drakedoder IV of Dragonskeep is the King's closest relative, but despite that he has little support due to the events during King Balthasar's absence last yahren. Duke Eisenreich has much support from the nobility, but not yet enough to ascend to the throne. And as the King was also the Avatar of One, with his death that mantle has not been taken by anyone. CHruch thinks that the King should not be the Avatar, but rather that the Avatar should be crowned King, once Dominicus blesses some individual with his divine presence. Until one claimant proves he is both powerful and dedicated enough to be the next King we shall remain leaderless." Hagen smiled at this. "Though I have faith in His will and trust that soon we shall see a change in status."

Hagen hoped that Fialessa would have an idea on how to win herself some support and gain some renown, which in turn would enable her to ask for a new seat in the Imperial Council to be created and she appointed to it. "I think for now any connection between us would do you more harm than good. Until a new King is chosen I fear that my support will be limited, and only once I know the official policy of my country will I be able to fully offer my support. I hope you understand that." If Church of the One were to win the debate, all his efforts here could be for naught, as Dominicus would possible once more turn openly hostile to other Gods. "I am a foreigner here, and I do not think I will ever be accepted, but then again it is not my goal. I do needs friends and allies, and am willing to aid them any way I can. So, think on what could be done to make you more popular, both amongst Panlings, as well as common people. And think on how I can aid you in that." The coach rumbled to a stop, Pan's Temple just out the door, though Hagen did not move, happy to sit and finish the conversation.

“Nothing is ever easy. Selection of he who rules least of all... I can see through your explanation that it differs not in the Western Kingdom. For it's worth, I shall pray that all turns out well for the people of your country.” Fialessa added with all sincerity, though well for those of the Western Kingdom may not be good for those of her faith, this was not about them.

“I do think it possible that an association between we two could be considered in a negative fashion. But as a foreigner myself, I wish to keep my friendships in the open, my honesty with the followers of Pan would be appreciated more than hiding it out of perceived shame or fear.” She felt the coach grind to it's inevitable halt, but noted his unhurried attitude, “I will consult Vanir and Noland as well as offering prayers to Pan that I can be guided in a way that is beneficial for us all. I shall seek to make myself further visible with those of my faith and beyond it as you've suggested. Is there ought I can do to aid you in the meantime?” She pondered momentarily the thought of inviting Hagen within the temple to take a drink and continue their conversation but then thought he might not feel comfortable with the idea of entering the House of Pan. Small steps Fialessa... she told herself, then aloud, “I shall not wish to keep you. No doubt the events of the evening were inspiring to slumber...” her tone held one of mirth as she insinuated the tedium that was the coronation ball.

Producing all the signs of being ready to leave the coach she smiled fondly at Hagen awaiting any further comment he might add or perhaps to see how gentlemanly he was...

“I thank you for your offer, but you best focus on the task ahead of you. Should I need your help rest assured I will ask.” He smiled politely, even chuckling as Fialessa referred to the coronation as sleep inspiring. “I have endured far worse, milady.” He rose to hold the door open for the priestess, stepping out and offering a hand so she could descend more easily, though his eyes froze on the sight to his right. There, the ruins of the newly formed Red Rose Guild were still smoldering, blue clad City Guards moving amidst the ruin with half-hearted interest. Naomi stood nearby, her face smeared with soot, but otherwise unharmed, observing the collapsed building next to her beloved temple.

Accepting his hand, Fialessa nearly missed the step down with a startled gasp as she followed the frozen glance of the warrior ambassador...

Taking in the sight of the smouldering building so close to her own home, too close... Seeing Naomi standing nearby, it reminded her that they'd just reopened the building. “Oh sweet Pan...” she breathed out in a stricken fashion, “I hope no one's been hurt.” Her amber eyes were wide with concern as she looked over toward the ruin for any signs of life. With the lax movement of the guard she imagined this was close to the end of any official searching and such.

Even as his other hand reached for Fialessa forearm to steady her, Hagen glanced at his escorts and the six riders took up positions around them, scanning the street, rooftops and windows. Naomi gasped and turned towards them, rushing to her friend’s side. “Oh, Fia it has been terrible. They say a girl died in there and some people came to close to the fire and got burned. The Temple just got singed. We’ll need to wash the walls and clean the soot, but it is going to be okay.” The girl glanced towards the paladin at Fia’s side, her eyes going wide as she recognized the symbol upon the man’s tabard.

Standing flatly upon the walk before the temple she thanked Hagen silently for his assistance just as Naomi reached her. Hope drained from her face as the other Panling shared the news... Fia moved to put a comforting arm about Naomi remembering that she'd spent time there recently. “Were many even in residence as yet... what of the other injured, have they any need of our temple, Naomi?” A moment slipped past, Fialessa had registered Naomi's glance at Hagen, but it was secondary to the urgency of the fire's remnants. “Lord Hagen... Naomi... shall we see if there is anything left that we might do?”

Naomi snuggled closer to Fialessa, whilst Hagen moved closer, but left the girls to comfort each other, his eyes moving over the remains of the burnt down building. "No....There was just three of them living there and I saw Miss Gywien after the fire. And I am not sure we should go." She shivered, hugging herself close. "I don't think anyone could have survived that. And they already took the injured to Mother's Temple." Hagen chose that moment to speak up, ignoring the look of surprise Naomi gave him flickers ago. "I agree with the girl, milady. I think we should let the City Guard handle this. Do you need my help with something more? If not I will bid you good night."

'There, there dear...' Fia whispered as she stroked Naomi's hair comfortingly for a moment.

“No, no there should likely not be anything more that can be done then... And I cannot think to keep you longer from your own rest. I thank you Lord Hagen for seeing me home. And more I thank you for your words” She held out her free hand in friendship. “I shall ponder them most carefully and shall look forward to meeting again.”

Having seen the smouldering ruin of the Rose Guild, her eyes were tinged with worry yet, but she offered the Ambassador a genuine smile as she stood to see him off. No doubt she'd have need to explain to Naomi what happened to have her brought to the temple by one of such an adversarial faith to their own... but tonight might not be the time for such discussion.

With a sweeping bow and a polite smile, Ambassador Frederic Hagen climber into his coach and a few flickers later was speeding up towards the Patrician’s Ring once more, his escort in tow. “Let’s go inside. I’ll clean the Temple walls tomorrow.” Naomi tugged Fialessa towards the doors, glancing at her and then towards the receding coach, but said nothing, letting her friend decide whether she would say more or leave her to guess what went on between her and the Oneist Paladin.

With a nod, Fialessa turned from watching the coach and followed... "and I shall help," she noted brightly. She would have been more blind than Noland not to have noticed the look Naomi passed her way.

"Oh don't worry so very much. I think we may have just gained an ally where once lay our enemy. There shall be much to discuss I'm certain, once I figure it all out." Giving Naomi an enigmatic grin, "to bed with you now, we'll chat while we clean yes..." With a smile Fia went off to her own room where she might meditate on the evening's surprises until sleep would take her.
