Troth: Out Hunting: Matt (Samheen 29th)

A pair of deep, brooding hazel eyes peered through the pines. In one hand, Matthias clenched a lethal club with symbols carved into it's smooth handle. The other was just clenched, tense.

The large man was searching for any prey, any trail to follow. His eyes scanned the ground, several times until he was sure he had missed nothing. He was getting tired, his legs were weary, and he feared that he might have to turn back soon. But he didn't want to go home empty handed. He crouched a minute to rest. His deep breathing sent fog out into the frosty air.

Matthias quietly examined his club. His father had taught them to him out of an old, torn up book. Each one with it's own distinct meaning. Some meant to bring luck, others merely provide comfort. Like the, circle, with the dot in the middle. His father had said it represented the spirit of someone passed away. Matthias thought it looked like an eye, maybe his fathers spirit watching him, protecting him? Matthias smiled, got up, and went back to hunting. He would save the thinking for later, he had a job to do, and he was hungry.

The hunt went on, and Mattias was fortunate to be hunting during this time of the year. Here in the late fall, before the true winter began, the herds began to migrate further south to avoid the constant freeze and near constant darkness of the coldest winter months.

Many small animals chittered about in the underbrush and trees of the lowland mountains. It was here he found something that could be considered odd or at the very least unusual in the lowlands. He had been following the tracks of a small herd of elk when he came across great tree of ice. It was a large, beast of a thing, standing a hundred men high and probably twice as wide as it spread out it's icy branches before him.

Under it were the remnants of a scouting party. Judging by the look of them, they had been dead quite some time. The corpses were frozen hard and covered with layers of ice and snow. Several dead animals were strung up by icy ropes and swinging gently in the shifting winds. The sled dogs had all been cut free and there were no signs of the dogs themselves, but the sleds had been overturned and untouched. The goods that had been packed on the sleds lie strewn about amidst the bodies from the party.

All in all, there were four women and two men. Their beads and trappings marked them as Hei-bjort. The running deer of their tribal sigil clearly and prominently displayed on their clothes and equipment. The curious thing was there were no signs of attack. The six bodies were not wounded in any noticable way, and other than being thin and pale, were rather well preserved by the hard freeze. The condition of the camp seemed odd as well. Two of the bodies were still wrapped in their sleeping furs, and the other four were spread out as if they had been running from something. The dogs being cut free and the overturned sleds seemed to indicate that there was some sort of attack, but the bodies themselves did not support that.

In the air, their was the scent of death, and this strange scene only made it seem stronger and more palpable.
