Rimehold, North Star Tavern: Lielle (Samheen 18th)

Post by Anarie Laezuriel »

The natives of Trothgard don't have much use for a tavern. They can eat, drink, sleep and socialize in and around their home. Trothgardians are a very inner-social people relying heavily on word of mouth for any information they would care to know. They do however require items outside their own circles for continuation of their lively hood.

Recently there has been an influx of traders and merchants, more than the Northern Isle is used too. These traders normally would have spent the night on their ships or pitched a tent. Not anymore for in Rimehold a new building has been erected and finally finished.

The building is two stories high erected from gray stone and darkened wood. The roof is peaked so as to have snow slide off it instead of collect, as it would on a flat roof. The windows are all circular and double-pained to keep heat in and cold out. They look much like portholes on a ship but much larger. There is a double set of doors in the front, dark wood like the wood of the structure set with the largest iron handles one may have ever seen. There is also a smaller wooden door in the back used for employees.

There is a huge sign nailed above the door (instead of hanging, since a hanging sign might blow away in the wind) that is painted with the picture of a six pronged blue star. There is small writing below proclaiming this building to be "The North Star Inn & Tavern" The print is less than half as important as the picture, considering the low literacy rate in Trothgard.

The heat radiates from a large fireplace against the rooms western wall. Above it on the mantle are two carved figurines of hippogyrphs, the bird like creatures that are believed to be avatars of the Ice Queen. The floor is made of stone and decorated with thick fur rugs of various animals. The walls are also of stone but re-enforced with wooden pieces, making it look almost cabin-like indoors. There are small tables very close to the floor, and no chairs you notice, except a few wooden stools by the bar. There are over stuffed pillows surrounding each of the twelve tables the main room has.

The bar is not too long, almost more of table than a bar but it gets the job done. It has the look of new wood and the whole room smells of wood, cooking meat and tobacco. Which as you can see can be purchased at the bar for a fair amount of coin. There is a poorly written notice tacked to a piece of wood behind the shelves that hold various kinds of liquor. "No wepens! Pleeze turn in ahl wepens at the bar or risk being tackin owt!"

Samheen 18th

At the far end of the bar, a lump of cloth spilled off of the bar and over the last stool. As the first patrons of the day entered, talking loudly, the pile lurched with a start, and a small girl blinked sleepily from under the folds. Lielle yawned as consciousness returned to her. It took her a few seconds to recall the prior night's events, which unfortunately had been rather droll. apparently she had fallen asleep, and no one had bothered to wake her. Red lines from her sleeve creased her face, and her hair was tousled. She glanced at the floor to make sure her pack was still situated under the stool, one could never be TO prepared, after all.

Satisfied that everything was in order, Lielle turned on the stool, and waved the bargirl over to her.

"Good morning, Ajiira! What's for breakfast?" She asked with an almost neuroticly chipper tone, and before her cousin could answer, she continued, "Great! I'll take two plates, please!"

The tall, dark-haired Ajiira hummed a hunting song as she set about collecting the empty mugs and tankards from the last eve. When her cousin stirred, the woman sighed. The death of Dantrius had been difficult for the family but for Lielle… Well she hadn’t been the same. Ajiira wondered what it would take to get her back to her normal self.

“Com’n right up, Lielle,” the darkhaired said as she made her way to the kitchen, balancing two platters laden with mugs.

A few moments later she returned with a large piece of Ice Root, the plant that grew in the more icey parts of the peninsula and, sliced, used as a sort of bread for there wasn’t a large supply of grain in Trothgard. The climate didn’t exactly lend itself for farming. The root had a thick coating of a deep brown substance. Travelers often called this jokingly the Honey of the North for its sweet taste. In reality this ‘honey’ was made from a combination of several plants and held together by elk grease.

“There y’go, cous,” Ajiira smiled as she began cleaning the tables.

As Ajiira reached the first table the door opened and a stranger stepped out of the cold, but fair, morning air. Slightly pointed ears were barely covered by his short hair. “Gads, it’s cold outside,” the Adhiel shivered even though it wasn’t that cold to the native Trothgardians. There were colder and certainly much harsher days out there. He took a seat next to Lielle and nodded to her: “Inaidha seodhiu ta eabh.”

OOC: “Inaidha seodhiu ta eabh” I salute the world in you (common Adhiel greeting)

Lielle blinked at the newcomer a few times before letting out a quiet, "Namaste..."

A slight blush crept onto her cheeks as she turned to face the Adhiel. This was, without a doubt, the fourth most awkward situation the girl had ever been placed in during her short life. Many questions fought ferociously with each other for dominance of her mind, not the least of which were 'How does this guy know I speak?' and 'What is an Adhiel doing, arriving here like he spent the night outside?'. During the interim of confusion, her body decided to react in automatic-friendly mode. With one hand she removed a slice of Ice Root, and pushed the plate towards the elf.

"Hungry?" She asked distractedly as she took as large a bite of the root as she could.

The Adhiel said more in his mother tongue but Lielle didn't understand . After a moment he sighed and spoke in broken common: "Most.... friendly. Mercy me, have..not spoke you tongue.. in a century."

The Elf sighed frustrated at his inability to tell Lielle what he meant properly. He was very proud and having to admit that he forgot a large part of this Human tongue was annoying. After all wasn't he considered a great scholar in his homeland? No... he stopped himself. He musn't think of that, it would only bring heartache and longing that served nothing.

He took a piece of the Ice Root and examined it curiously and nodded when he recognized it: "Ice Root... both... healing as... food application."

Ajiira raised a brow at this comment, the root wasn't used to heal. Not as far as her knowledge went. She shrugged and went on with her work, leaving it to her cousin to question the newcomer if she pleased to do so.

Lielle nodded dumbly at the Adhiel. He could have just said the sky was green and pigs could fly, for all the attention (or lack there of) that the human girl was paying to his words. Her brain was too busy deciphering the scenarios possible from this stranger’s sudden appearance. He could be a powerful wizard, or, an avatar of the gods, or, any one of a billion and two combinations of heroic origins.

“Uh huh.” She agreed distractedly as he identified the contents of the plate. She took another over-sized bite of ice root, and tried to speak around it.

“Mrph nrfff…” A frown creased on her petit features, and she rapidly, more rapidly than any decent young lady should, chewed and swallowed the obstructive bite of food before trying again.

“My name is Lielle. What’s yours?” She smiled at her new dragon-slaying-evil-smashing-wizard of a friend. She hoped his name was Sam. The girl felt he looked very much like a ‘Sam’.

“My name…” the Adhiel pondered on the question for a few moments, suddenly a smile lit up his features, “Call me… Richard.”

Richard looked very pleased with what he had said and spoke his name again, just to feel the sounds rolling of his tongue. Of course, it wasn’t his true name but he had always liked the name and now he had a chance to use it albeit briefly. Yes, this was going to be fun! Then he remembered the reason why he was here and the smile disappeared from his face. Hopefully this was going to work. It had to… “It just has to work,” he muttered out loud in a far more fluent common then he had used before…

Suddenly he realized he had spoken out loud and looked around: "Ehm... err... Well... Just... ehm... disregard that." The new-named Richard cursed silently, he wasn't used to other people and one of his bad habits was talking out loud when he was distressed. "Bah, a few centuries of solitude and one loses his social skills," he muttered out loud again.
