Old Allies, New Friends? Jygust 32 TT

Post by Elvin Motricé »

The Jardin Clos was in an old barn, yet there was nothing in the least bumptious about it. The spacious, high-ceiling interior was lined with dense ivy, covering the ceiling as well, which both provided for a lush and exotic decor as well as muffling the sound of voices that would otherwise carry in the huge space. This, combined with the fact that the only lighting was from single pillar candles at each table (the waiters moved to and fro with candles on their tray to light their ways) provided an atmosphere that was at once desperately romantic and intensely private. This made it quite the place for the powerful and wealthy to visit -- that, and the fact that the food was exquisite -- and rather expensive. After all, it was perhaps the only establishment in the city that served food as its exclusive means of support, so it had to make a living somehow.

Elvin sat back at one of the tables, waiting for Ashari to arrive, his other business in the Citadel had been concluded earlier then he had expected. When one of the waiters passed by he gave the man specific instructions to escort the lady Gywien to his table when she would arrive.

A black robe flowed around the tall Adhiel, the seems threaded with silver. His long hair was held together by a band of silver. A ring of the clearest crystal on the Adhiel's right hand reflected the light of the flickering candles as he shifted his hand slightly. The Professor did not only look like a mage on the Tether, for those whose awareness stretched into the Aether, he was a bright presence of tightly woven, overlapping, protective mental shields. Manyana had told Elvin exactly what Ashari was. The Adhiel wasn't going to take any chances with a mindcrafter...

"I wonder what will be the eventual result of this meeting," he pondered while his slender hands traced the ever-changing lines of light and shadow. He had sent the guildmistress a letter concerning business, and though it was true that he had business to discuss with her, though not all of it was of the nature that he mentioned in the letter. "The only mindcrafter we know of..."

Ashari had just had a meeting at the Jardin Clos with Fialessa, and though it had turned out well enough, the young woman had since disappeared. While she'd called on her she hadn't responded and it'd left Ash to get a new mentor for dance. Luckily, Charlesmange was quite prepared to fill in, atleast this once.

Wearing a white dress, Ashari looked very innocent and pure, and this was paired with her long lose hair that had braids woven through it here and there with ribbons of silk to match her dress. Her nails were done to pair with this, and her makeup was fresh. She stepped into the dining room and gave her name to the attendant who lead her directly to Elvin's table. "Master Motrice," she said with a cheery smile. "It has been too long," she waited for him to stand and shook his hand before taking a seat herself with the waiter quick to assist her chair for pushing in until she was comfortable.

"Whatever sweet local mead you've got," she ordered and waited for Elvin to do the same. Once the server had left she crossed her delicate thieve's fingers on her lap and sat back in her seat. "You are well since the Demon Hunt?" He itched to discuss something, she could see it in his posture, but she revelled in putting off the subject for pleasantries.

As soon as Elvin spotted Ashari he stood up and waited for her. He took the offered hand and smiled: "Lady Gywien, it certainly has. Please," he motioned for the waiter to assist her with her chair as he himself sat back down and observed the guildmistress.

"White... One hell of a colour to keep clean. It does make her look innocent," the Professor smirked at that thought. He had done some checking up on the Lady Gywien. Pieces of information, rumours and the core business of her guild had convinced him that this lady was far less scrupulous then she seemed.

When Ashari had placed her order the silver-haired sorcerer added: "And one glass of Kislovani white, please," and waited for the server to leave. Although the Adhiel was indeed itching to discuss certain matters, he had lived long enough to have learned some patience. Some of the tenseness eased out of him as he relaxed and leaned back, thinking back on the last year.

"It has been a while since we last met," the Professor mused, "I've done a bit of travelling, some research. There have been failures and successes. So I guess you could say I've been well," he looked at Ashari, "And you? I have heard many things though it's hard to know what is true and what is not. I'm not inclined to value the tales of rumourmongers too much..."

OOC: I was beginning to wonder if you got lost finding our thread...

"I should love to do some traveling myself. Time hasn't permitted me to leav the Citadel since my arrival here - far too busy with things. Your traveling, though, it wasn't entirely by choice, now was it?" She smiled a soft sort of smile. "How is the University holding up in it's new exotic locale? So dreadfully far away from everything, I don't believe I'd enjoy it much."

This was, of course, quite true. The girl she'd been a yahren ago yearned for those quiet spots in the woods where she could be safe from people and free of their sly and cheating ways. "Do tell, Master Motrice, what rumors have you heard?" A chiseled brow lifted dangerously with a half smile paired with it. There was nether in her expression, temptation and the begging of his indulgence on the matter. Oh yes, do tell, Elvin. Tell me what you've heard...

The Professor smiled wryly when Ashari hinted at the translocation of the University: "I wasn't in the University at the time, lady Gywien, I was in Pax Balthasar," he shook his head, "This is exactly one of the reasons why mages should think more before trying something. The culprit has been punished, not severely enough to my liking, more a symbolic punishment than taking real responsibility for his actions," he looked at Ashari, a small smile playing around his lips, "But that's not what you asked, is it? Lets get back to the question: Although most wards have been restored, I can't seem to get used to the dampness of Sierra. Fortunately mages have some advantages in keeping their rooms comfortable."

When Ashari asked him about the rumours the sorcerer cursed inwardly: "You shouldn't have mentioned that..." A delicate finger absently followed the reflections of the candles on the table while the Adhiel looked at the guildmistress intently, carefully considering his next words: "That you were working on creating a guild and were successful. Of course, some people are jealous about that, but that's only natural when you're in a position of power. That you made some powerful ah... friends. And something about a fire I believe. I've been quite busy lately..."

Elvin leaned forward and quickly changed the subject, hoping to avert more questions about rumours: "Tell me, lady Gywien, how is the Rocky Isles Guild doing?"

ooc: Welcome to the new rhythm.

Ash nodded as he spoke of the University and how he'd been lucky to avoid being there at the time. "Blessed by Pecunia you are then, my friend," she said with a small smile that lessened as he continued about the culprit being discovered and the punishment that was bestowed on them. She frowned slightly. "Understandable - the person responsible, was it done on purpose?" She asked. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity and some other emotion that would be difficult to judge beyond the surface. It was entertainment, though from where it stemmed was nigh impossible to tell. Ash had begun practice of maintaining an emotional facade of disinterest on most subjects.

"Ahh, yes, the weather. It's been described to me as tropical. Sounds quite nice, though quite different from here. The flora is very different, yes? I should love some varieties of plants from there. Perhaps you would grant me with the joy of bringing me back a little something the next time you go and return? I would love that very much."

When Elvin's finger traced the pattern on the table she allowed herself a smile at his expense. She'd allowed him to hang himself with his words, and now he was wriggling on the line. "Powerful friends? I am my own most powerful friend, I'd say," she said with the smile still intact.

The wait staff prevented further pushing on the subject with the arrival of their drinks. The sorcerer was safe for now. "You know, I've not even bothered to look at the menu yet, what with the enjoyment my company has presented." Ash glanced over the menu. "So bring us something delectable to enjoy in the meantime, hmm?" She waited for them to leave before raising her glass and taking a sip of the sweet mead that she had ordered.

"Is your wine acceptable?" She asked pleasantly before continuing on to answer his question.

"The Guild is well," she responded, though it was anything but. "I have several very promising students as well as some new arrivals that are proving... interesting if nothing else."

"And your classes at the University? Do your students give you good challenge and inspiration?"

Their conversation which had only just started, was suddenly interrupted. A man had walked into the Jardin's Clos and had walked straight up to the table where Elvin and Ashari were sitting. "Greetings, Master Elvin and Mistress Ashari. It is good that I have found you both here." They might have both recognized his voice, although it wasn't very silent in the tavern. When the stranger pulled the hood of his cloak backwards however, his face was revealed. The blue eyes of Simon Ginneke were staring at the two. His usual smile wasn't to be found on his face however and he even seemed to be more skinny as usual, if that were even possible.

"I need to talk to you both. It..involves some previous events that you two have shared." He paused for a flicker, looking around to see if there was a private spot where they could talk. "It is quite urgent."

Elvin looked at Ashari when she asked more about the person responsible, thinking her amusement was at the his expense, and frowned: "A master mage holds tremendous power, Lady Gywien, there are certain risks to using such powers. Doorways to worlds and even greater powers that we do not fully comprehend. He had been warned, he had been advised never to try something without at least another present. Yet ambition got the best of him. It wasn't good intentions... Only desperate times ask for desperate measures. There was no reason to try what he did without the proper preparation. If he had only risked himself, it might have been excusable but he did not," he shook his head and took a sip of his wine, "The matter has been resolved by the University's council and they have final say in this. It has been done, no point in arguing about the outcome."

The Professor inclined his head: "I will bring back some local vegetation for you. Though I think it'ld require specific conditions to flourish in. I'll see if I can find someone in the University to offer some tips on that. As for tropical... Well I prefer less damp climates," he smiled pleasantly, "But that's a matter of personal preference."

The silver-haired sorcerer let the remark of powerful friends slide by, he wasn't about to continue the conversation down that path. When their table was being waited upon the Adhiel took another sip of his wine and let Ashari do the talking, preferring to let her take the lead on this. Even though he enjoyed good food, he didn't dine out a lot, especially at such fancy locations. Best to let others who were more accustomed at them handle the actual ordering.

When she asked about the wine the Adhiel smiled and looked at the crystal ponderously: "It is. It certainly is. Not only for the flavour but also for the memories it holds, both the good and the bad."

He laughed when Ashari described her students: "Isn't it always so? Students are usually interesting. It's a more polite word than some others I'ld use to describe a few of mine," he smiled when she asked her next question, "It's always challenging to try and tutor the young, if they're willing to learn. Those that aren't, or think they already know all that's important, well... You might say those are the most obnoxious challenge."

Only when the man addressed them did Elvin consider him. The private atmosphere of the Jardin Clos and the candlelight atmosphere made it difficult to survey the room. He recognized the voice, the Imperial thaumaturgist and he had built up a sort of working relation in regard to the Libre. "Simon, I didn't expect to see you here," the Professor sounded surprised and it showed in his use of Ginneke's first name. Normally he would have been more formal, especially in the presence of others. He had had occasional slips during their conversations -after all it was difficult for the Adhiel sorcerer to keep calling someone 'lord' when you were having a conversation about an interesting topic.

Elvin didn't hesitate, nodded and stoop up: "Immediately," he turned to Ashari and there was a look in his eyes that was hard to define - something cold and determined as if he remembered something unpleasant, "Lady Gywien, if you would be so kind to follow?"
"- and so's Mister Motricé." Becca smiled wryly. "He's probably going to go - he's not set anything on fire for a few months, so he's got to be going through withdrawal by now." ~ Becca Acerbi

That Elvin didn't use his name, nor be more private on the matter suggested to her that he knew of the relationship between she and Ashtallion. That being the case, she already knew the details of his blood pact punishment and that he would be forced to make his amends for some time. If only Elvin could see the man beneath his cool exterior, she thought. He was a generous mage, and had all too recently solved one of her deepest problems by way of the magick he learned on that evening that the University of Magick was transported. I will thank him again when I see him next, she thought.

While the sorcerer before her believed only desperate times call for such investigations she didn't believe it to be the case. All knowledge was there for the taking, and it would be the bold would would possess it. He had come to her for a reason, for she was a mind crafter - a skill born from the dark to suppress it and one that was only used when the nether tried to spread it's legs and birth a new demon into their realm. It was then that the 'good' mages and sorcerers would come searching for ones who had her powers, but only in the desperate times. She pitied their futility and self-imposed barriers.

"There have always been risks, yes, and always will be. It is a shame that lives were lost." Lives of useless pawns. There would always be casualties when climbing the mountain of success. Mother above knew, Ashari had suffered her own.

When he said he'd bring her some plant life she smiled. "Oh yes, I have the sort of place that can support it. When you bring them you shall have to come to my manse, where you can see the other specimens I've gathered over the past few months."

On the topic of wine she nodded. "I can believe that," she said with a nod. He had lived a great life compared to hers in length already. It held more memories than she could imagine.

The interruption didn't permit for her to respond to the comments about students or their natures. Ashari was teaching quite different subject matter than the academia of the University. Likely, her students were getting a very different view of schooling.

"Simon, it is a pleasure to see you again - has been far too long since we've spoken." Unlike Elvin she didn't waste Ginneke's time with pleasantries. Before the sorcerer could ask her to join she'd risen in her seat, pushing it out with the backs of her knees. "Please," she motioned a hand in front of her. "Let's be going." If Elvin were a gentlemen he'd drop some coins on the table to pay for their drinks, but if he didn't she would before they moved to depart. "Where shall we go? I have a coach outside for some privacy." The only matter that joined her to Elvin was the Changer. Was that his reason for finding her out in the first place? Was there a rumbling of the demon again?

Simon's usual smile appeared on his face as both Elvin and Ashari were quick to follow him. "Why, Ashari, I thought you'd never ask. Let's go into your coach." Twinkles were visible in his blue eyes as he flipped his cloak around his skinny shoulder. He knew he didn't have an impressive posture, but in all his enthusiasm, he couldn't really care about that as well.

Once they sat down in the coach with the three of them, Simon sitting across from Elvin and Ashari, he sat back, waiting for the coach to move before he spoke. "So. You probably wonder why I want to talk to both of you, although you might have a good idea. It is about the Liber. The book of corruption." He looked at Elvin. "You have been helping me in the search for the book. We know it is still out there and we need to find it." The Imperial Thaumaturgist took a deep breath. "I have recently received some important information that could help greatly in our search. I..believe I know where the book is...and I need your help in retrieving it."

He said no more, wanting to see their reaction first. He knew they had both worked together on fighting the Changer and now here he was, asking them to fight the Netheric forces yet again.
