The Guard Barracks -- Early Morn -- Samheen 21

Post by Ashari »

Located just east of the Foreigner's Square is the royal barracks. Here, the men and women who serve in Amun Rah's city guard and army make their home. The complex is divided into several sections, including three training grounds, three different sleeping halls, three mess halls, an officer's keep, and two staff rooms. City watch, standing army and the slave members of both each have a different part to themselves, except when the slave in question is an officer - those get to sleep and live in the officer's keep.

The barracks, made of imported black rock, are a spartan building, with an armory that bears the traditional weapons of the country. Few armors are found here at all, as the army and watch are unaccustomed at wearing them, and would rather not, in such heat.

Visitors and staff alike enter through the gate and main hall, where staff may freely pass, but a sergeant approached any who are visiting. "Hello, may I assist you in something?" His voice was curt and no-nonsense. He was a 'right down to business' type of man, which made him perfect for the job as he carried a board upon which a several layers of parchement were affixed.

Jadmai jumped with a start as Ionis himself woke him up.

"AHHH! AHHH! AHHH!" Jadmai screamed broken out of his trance. "BRIGHT!"

But there was someone with him in the room instinctively he reached towards his daggers and flung in the direction of the voice, but when he found out he was just doing a throwing motion as they were no knives to be had he slowly started to come out of his trance.

You are in your room. That's Ionis. And you don't have any knives. Take it downa knotch.

"Sorry, Ionis, I REALLY not used to people being in my room when I wake up." He shook his head a little hoping the sleep would leave him. "Yes, the barracks." And he stood up and followed him.

Upon reaching the gate and the sergeant Jadmai was surprised with how cordial the man was.

That might be the nicest greeting from a stranger I have ever had.

Jadmai used his best english as leaned against the gate still tired, "You are quite chipper in the morning. Anyways, yes goodman, my name is Jadmai, Jadmai AvZathrak. I was hoping Ionis might have told you about me coming this morning."

Jadmai blindfold in full effect, still rubbed his eyes, "Ah yes, and I was wondering if someone can tell me where to pick up the blades that were being made for me."

Jadmai did know some military types, saying Ionis had the blades made for him, and he was sent here by Ionis, can really tighten their codpieces.

"Yes, Ionis sent word of your arriving, sir." He said as he looked at the veiled foreigner. If the Rafao said he was trustworthy, then the guardsman had to believe it, even if it had been one of Ionis's own men who had just so recently attempted killing him. Something which, as they spoke, the Royal guards were looking into as they questioned the attempted murderer.

"Your blades are in the weapon room, as well as a group of guardsman for you to chose from, or you can take all of them if you'd like. I'd suggest taking just a third or so, however, and then coming back and getting more if you don't find your - quarry - before tradetide." He paused. "For these men haven't exactly gotten a full night's rest, and so forth." He started walking at a brisk pace, not waiting on Jadmai to follow.

"Right this way." He led them down a nice long and open corridor to an expansive room where a few men shuffled their feet and stood chatting among one another. They had been woken rudely and picked on a day that was supposed to be a holiday. They didn't mind overmuch, but they also didn't realize the person who was to be leading them was a dark adhiel.

All of them pulled to attention as their sergeant stepped into the room and gave each a quick look, one that demanded their attention. He moved over to a table with the stiff movements of militia, and gathered up a roll of leather. "Your blades are in here." He said as he handed the parcel over to Jadmai.

The dark adhiel was faced with twelve men, all with shaved heads and all wearing yellow togas. They varied in height, and in what weapons they carried. Most looked tired. One young man, about the same height as Jad -- rather short for a human, was bright eyed and bushy tailed for the time of day. He held his mace with casual knowledge. Other than him, each one could've passed for the other. "Ask any one of them to step forward, if you'd like to examine them further."

Jadmai took the leather parcel first, and examined the blades inside, taking his time in spinning the daggers in his hand watching for it to move from it's initial spinning point--a test to see if they were properly weighted and balanced.

He took his blindfold off as he was presented with the guards, he knew it would seem more polite, and as he knew he wouldn't win them all over, he hoped for a few.

"I really don't need prime physical specimens. I don't suppose I look so great after last night so, I don't expect them to either."

Jadmai was rather sure the guards wouldn't mind the way his idea would work: they would still get their holiday.

Jadmai turned towards the sergeant, "Could I be alone with them for a moment?"

As soon they were left alone he would look at the men and shrug, "There is something I need to know before we do start, are any of you popular around town--at the pubs, big men about town? It's the one thing I can't have that."

Jadmai then called the sergeant back in, "Does this place have a general page, someone I can get a letter to, and that it might find it's way to Rahkash?"

The blades were, of course, expertly crafted, and of a better quality than the ones that Jadmai had been carrying before, the ones that an eager little man had picked up without a second thought, ones that were no doubt sitting without use. These ones, however, were clean and extremely sharp. "Sharp enough to cut a hair lengthwise." The guardsman said as he watched Jad casually spin them on his hand.

"Sure, sir. They are your men, after all. Just try to get them home in one piece, I'd appreciate it. After the trouble last night a few of our men have been injured." He nodded to his men, and then to Jadmai and then headed for the door.

They all sort of looked at one another with lack of surety in their eyes. This hadn't been what they'd been expecting. The short one looked at his comrades and grinned. "Well, if Ja`Kama is here, there's a reason for it, you know he must've been out at the pub last night til dawn." The others laughed a bit, but then looked at Jadmai. "A few of us are known around town. Intha, Suq`Qok and Al are pretty known." The men who belonged to those names each stepped forward and shrugged. "But other than that, new enough to the city to not be known, or just rather home-bodies."

"Or married." One of the men elbowed the man next to him who shook his head and grinned, a slight blush coming to his cheeks.

"But, anyway. Other than those three, we're all pretty quiet folk. Probably why they got us up at this early mark and thought we'd manage it." The young man said and adjusted his grip on his mace a bit, as it was a heavy weapon. "Do you need the letter written, sir, or just delivered? Either way, I can do it, or one of these men could, we're all quick on our feet."

Jadmai smiled broadly at the short ones jests, though truthfully, he couldn't quite follow all of the humor, he did get the jokes about the married fellow.

"You three, go home get some rest, or take your holiday as you please. Keep your chins up, it's not personal. I just can't have well-known guards in this pack for this certain hunt to work. Sorry to wake you."

Jadmai looked over the rest of the men and nodded, "If you are not entirely sure as to why you are here, it's quite simple: The Rafaso wants a man captured, I have a certain...knowledge of this man, and the lot of us are going to bring him in. However, we are not going to go tearing apart the city to get him, I plan on making him come to us."

Jadmai took a step forward and rubbed his chin slightly as he thought, "His name is Rakhash, what he has done or who he is does not matter. Just the capture, and delivery. I'll tell you all I know of him."

Jadmai then went to divulge a description of Rakhash, he had seen the man twice, the first time, all he did was observe, so he was rather sure he could give an accurate description of him. The dark adhiel also gave a description of Lianelle, the woman he traveled with, and recounted parts of Rakhash's doings in the riot to see if that rang any bells.

"That's the best I can give you." He said giving what information he had.

"There is only one part of this little adventure that has a twist: I am going to make him come to us. In fact, I am going to tell him we are looking for him. I'm going to tell him that the Rafaso is very interested in his capture, and that he charged someone with his tracking down and capture. What I won't tell him, obviously, is that tracker is me. However, I will tell him that I know this tracker, and I know how to get him out of this mess--none of which is a lie."

Jadmai then reached into his pack, and took out his writing materials, and began to write the letter which hopefully would be the tool that brought Rakash to him...unharmed...the man did save his life.

Rahkash--
I don't know your business, and I don't know what you have done, or are doing, and frankly I don't care. What I do know is that during the riots you have save my life--127 yahren, and I treasure them all--so I owe you.

I'm sure you have no doubts that you are...a man who is being searched for. I'm sure you have also figured out that I have some connections with those who are looking for you, but they are not nearly what you think.

These men killed thousands of my cousins...I survived, and I am here alive, but it's not exactly as if I can leave at any moment.

That's enough chatter: Ionis himself has charged a man with hunting you down, along with some other goons. I know the man, and I know the goons, and I know you how you can avoid them and get to some reasonable amount of saftey.

There is one catch: I go with you. We are both prisioners in our own right, one of us soon to be more than the other.

Find me, I'll be floating around the inns and taverns. If you do the same, I am sure we are bound to run into each other...shouldn't be to hard to spot the dark ahiel.

Don't get all gushy on me, you saved my life, and I have a consciene--

Jadmai

PS--How's the girl?

Jadmai showed the letter to the men, "Tell me if this is understandable, I haven't mastered writing yet. I want this in his hands, given to him, by a random page, don't pay the page too well, don't tell him anything more than he needs to know to find Rahkash."

"Our actual course of action will be alot like your holiday anyways. Go to the common inns and taverns in the town, keep a look out, if you think you spot our mark, tell me. I will come, confirm his identity, and with the help of the guards there we will obtain our mark."

Jadmai shrugged, "So go, get some breakfast, but look up from your eggs every now and then, and keep your ears open. And someone get this letter out, if I get confirmation of it's delievery that would be plus."

Jadmai pointed to the short human with the spring in his step, "Not you, you come with me. Speak any adhiel? Doesn't matter. Take me a to a nice place...I was in one with Jun a few nights ago with dancing girls. know it?"

The best part of the plan. Staring at ass until things got into motion.

The bright-eyed, bushy-tailed young man looked at his compatriots as they left since they were too well known. "Grab a page on your way, Suq`Qoq. Send him in." It made sense. He was beginning to understand Jadmai's plan, but he didn't quite understand how this stranger - this dark adhiel was going to flush them out. He was just a man, like any other, wasn't he? And yet he had some sort of favor of the Rafao.

When he read over the letter it became clear. Jadmai knew this man that they were to search for because he had saved his life. And yet here he was, a convict and on the run for fear of his life. With a woman? The young man hadn't realized there was a woman involved as well.

A few of the men nodded as Jad spoke of the riots, and as he described Rakhash and his deadly staff, well, there were indeed a few who recognized the action. "I saw him pike a man right through." The guard who said it, swallowed hard. "No wonder the Rafao wants him captured."

They all shifted and waited for instruction, when it came, they dispersed in small groups heading out to the taverns. The young man who Jad requested called out to his comarades. "Leave Yabal's for us. Make sure you get to the Bad Omen and Ravnick's." He paused. "And that tea place..." He recalled the description of the two people. "I think I saw them eating breakfast there a few days ago."

A page came running into the room. "My services were requested?" It was a young woman, maybe fourteen yahren, that had yet to grow into herself. Enough so that she could've passed for a lanky teenage boy instead. "A letter, Master?" Her hair was cropped incredibly short, and was spiked up in the back from sleep. The front was fluffy and stuck out all over. It was her eyes - almond shaped and with long lashes, and her lithe hands with red-laquered nails, that set her apart as a young woman.

The guard took it upon himself to hand over the letter, telling the girl, who's name was lost within the conversation, the description of Rakhash. "See if you can't stop by the magistrate if you don't find him at Yabal's and find where his parent's live." She nodded and then bowed to both men in turn. "Anasis sends her grace, be swift." The girl smiled and then turned and was off.

"Anurith's Golden Ram." He said. "That's where Jun took you. No where else are there girls like that. Not even in the palace."

Jadmai listened to the men as they reacted to his description of their mark, "Yes, I know many of you are likely upset at what he did, but remember, he's no good to us dead. That's why I need to be the one who finds him--I don't think he is going to trust complete strangers." As he made sure that his directions were clear, he nodded at the group, "Good hunting. I'll be at the Golden Ram if he's spotted."

He then turned to the short man, and nodded and gestured for him to lead the way. He was getting better with the region, he had gotten sound advice on how to get back to the palace, but he didn't really know how to get around just yet.

Sliding the blindfold over his eyes, as the sun was going to be getting even higher and hotter. He would ask his escort, if they could stop in at a shop to find him him a cloak that was hooded, he wouldn't pull it over his himself to far, he actually wanted to be spotted as he was about town for once--the hood was mostly meant for a bit of shade.

Afterwards, he would let himself be led about, to perhaps the only other place that was familar in this alien land.
