After Tarnuun had been answered by Matthew, he thought to himself what on earth the festival of the parrot was. Never in his life had he experienced a festival in Roque d'Ancourt.

Could I have really been gone for so long?
He thought to himself as he tried to figure out what the festival was actually about. As they moved on Tarnuun became more and more anxious to enter the city gates and hoped to see his family at the very entrance but he saw no sign of them whatsoever.

They should be at home working or fixing. All he could remember was his parents always being busy, and he did not think that would have changed.

Tarnuun took one more look around trying to see if he could notice anything out of the ordinary about Roque d'Ancourt, and so he did. The buildings were being rebuilt. All that raced through his mind was if his family was alright. So whilst he waited in the line he became more and more impatient and -tried- to get the line to move a little faster knowing that he might stur up more commosion than there already is.

ooc: Very sorry for the short replies. I just have to get used to the whole Tazlure. :)

While Matthew's directions might be true to some extent, the fact remained that the monestary was indeed located within the citywalls. Of course this being the main entrance to the city it made sense that from this point of view everything was within those safe walls. Over the years this fortification had grown to include the fisherman's village as well as the monestary.

The Roque in charge of administration today looked with considerable boredom at the two polite religious men. "Who ever goes first, I don't care." He spoke up with some force. "I will however get on with it now, or we'll hold everyone up! Name, occupation, reason for visiting?" He rolled it off his tongue in an experienced fashion.

Meanwhile the same blue-dressed girl skipped over to Tarnuun and pulled his tunic. "You don't know the parrot?" She blinked her eyes in disbelief. "There's so many people coming! So many things to buy and to sell and all these plays and actors and singers and dancers and alllll kinds of nice things!" She made an exaggerated motion with her arms, smiling broadly.

"Silia, come back here." Her mother retorted, eyeing the strange, blue clad man suspiciously.

It was a very self-conscious Matthew who offered himself to the guards at the gate. Admittedly, his habit was of the most forgetful brown such that the mud and dust from the road were of no consequence, but this didn't change the monk's awareness of his condition, which might rank somewhere between country serf or beggar...neither of which seemed entirely welcome in the opulent streets of Roque d'Ancourt. Still, he had money...and that usually went a long way to gain entry into virtually any city in the Western Kingdom.

"M-Matthew of Havarti..." murmured the monk towards the guards, jerking Steve the Mule along with him.

Even as the monk presented himself before the guard, he couldn't help but ponder about the two gentlemen behind him in line. Certainly, Beacon was headed for a monastic lifestyle, a curious change from the dangerous past he once had. Matthew guessed (no doubt incorrectly) that Beacon was once a criminal of some kind, for he wore dark colours and leather armour (a leather vambrace reaching to the wrists of Bram's arms might have suggested archery as well, but the lack of a bow made that unlikely). It was a pleasing thing to see a man answering the call to Dominicus...and it seemed Bram Beacon was perhaps the ideal candidate to seek a higher purpose. After all, he had been nothing but kind today...and that spoke well in a man.

The next one was clearly military, with a pair of weapons hanging casually at his side. Whether or not he could use them, he certainly could carry them without the customary bumps, bruises, and curses associated with carrying a couple five-pound, awkward articles at one's belt...and that might speak of a campaigner, returning home after time spent in (no doubt) T'aquar or that other place...the God-Forsaken island where Sir Raille lost his life this yule past.

As for Matthew himself, he was the deceiver in the line. He had been ordained and indoctrinated into the Purificatio in a very secretive, private ceremony with Brother Kyle...and while it should be no secret, the climate of the Kingdom had changed in the last couple yahren. Brother Kyle regretted Matthew's decision...the pair had argued well into the night...but Mat could not be moved. There is so much to be done. And it cannot be done at Knottingshall.

And so, Matthew introduced himself not as Holy Inquisitor Matthew of Ordo Malleus, but instead as Matthew of Havarti, "...of the Order of the Shining Circle out of Knottingshall Monastery. I'm just here for the festival, brothers."

Being tugged in his tunic, Tarnuun turned around and smiled at the little girl. Shaking his head to the question he leaned down to the little girl and asked "What more can you tell me of the event?". He smiled at the woman and hoped that she would not see him as a thief or any hostile human.

"There's so many people coming! So many things to buy and to sell and all these plays and actors and singers and dancers and alllll kinds of nice things!"

She couldn't be more right about that. As Tarnuun kneeled down to be at the height of the little girl, he looked back with a confused yet amazed look to him as he saw more and more people lining up behind.

"Silia, come back here." Her mother retorted, eyeing the strange, blue clad man suspiciously.

As he saw the mother snap in such a way, he quickly stood up saying to the little girl "Run back to your mother now" with a small smile to his face and resumed his position in line.

Still waiting in line, he looked at the two others infront of him. Both clearly being some sort of monks. One seemed shy as he stuttered now and then whilst he spoke, the other seemed to have no problems and had some manners to help the one who was being pushed back to stand infront of him. The one dressed in black seemed strange to Tarnuun as he could not recall many monks walking around in black, but he kept his curiosity to himself and asked no questions. -But- he did hear the monk infront saying his name
"M-Matthew of Havarti..."
. He stuttered again as if he was either scared or nervous, either could be but the monk infront of Tarnuun seemed to make sure that he would get through.

Tarnuun still being anxious to get in, he grew more and more impatient of getting inside those city gates and kept thinking what could be taking those guards so damn long in moving this line, but Tarnuun didn't show much of impatience. He just couldn't stand still.

OOC: Guessing I'm clear to post now...

IC: Arnholt had noticed Tarnuum in passing, in the sense that the man was difficult to miss. The novice cultist's first glance at him had resulted in a double take. There were plenty of guys who were taller than Arnholt, but it wasn't often he saw one who could look right over his head without even craning his neck. If their eyes met, he bent his head in an offhand nod of acknowledgment, but his attention was mostly focused now on the guards and the gates ahead of him as he awaited his own turn to enter.

As for Matthew, Arnholt took him for a nice enough fellow. Bit mousy, of course, but then he liked that in a priest of Dominicus. All in all, he took him for one of the relatively inoffensive clerics typical of this area. Or as his father had described him, wishy-washy priests who were just too soft in the heart and in the head to deal with heathens as harshly as they deserved. He was aware of course that Matthew was an enemy, at least in the same sense that all followers of Dominicus were mortal enemies to him now. It never occurred to him, however, that the man might secretly be an Inquisitor of the hated Purificatio.

Somewhere their respective deities were laughing. Or raging. The two men were bitterest enemies, if only either of them knew.

"Matthew of Ha-var-ti...festival...religious..." The Roque behind the table repeated and wrote it down on an official looking document. Next he repeated the actions on a loose piece of parchment. "Welcome to the city. Please report to the One Monestary."

It would not do to stop a religious man. Where normally there would be questions concerning income or the lack thereof, there was a clear goal for any of such conviction and the monestary could deal with them as they saw fit.

He eyed the next one in line. That one looked vaguely religious as well. Heh, so maybe they are finally endorsing the parade. Wouldn't be a moment too early. He grinned and put the final stamp on the citypass and handed it to Matthew.

"Enjoy your stay. NEXT!"

Clearly now it was Arnholt's turn while the little girl smiled at Tarnuun. "Maybe one day I'll carry the parrot!' She chirped. "You'll see, it's a beautiful parade! Everyone in their nice clothes and nice smiles."

She quickly ran back to her mother after the short explanation, still waving at the big man from behind the safety of her mom's skirts.

The merchant took a little chance after glancing at Tarn's outfit. "Hmm you are visiting Roque, then, sir?" He lifted two massive eyebrows. "You must remember to come visit the Bazaar. We will have the finest display of leathers and hides, I assure you!"

...and that was it.

Matthew couldn't have been in line for less than a tide (or at least it seemed as such)...only to spend a few, brief flickers under the scrutiny and approval of the guards. It was sensible, of course...law, order, and safety all went hand in hand...but it was bafflingly frustrating. And then there was the guard's order. Report to the Monastery. First, that meant that Matthew's advise to Bram had been wrong: The Monastery was within the city walls! That was confusing to Matt, who seemed to recall it being a bit further towards the sea...but then, it had been over ten yahren since he had last walked these streets...and at that time, he had come to sell preserves (not gawk at the Monastery of Roque).

Of course, there might be some use in reporting to the Monastery. Matthew could identify himself as he truly was, and find out if the Purificatio had any presence in the city. The monk doubted it...the inquisition was all but a shadow of it's former self thanks to rampant abuses of power, mindless prejudices, and very poor decision making...but he should at least ask to be sure.

Tomorrow, decided the monk, turning to wave at Bram Beacon and the large warrior behind him. For now, he needed to clean his robe...and get Steve put up such that he'll be properly fed and handled while here. Tomorrow. I haven't even the energy for a festival, much less presenting myself before the...local Order.

Arnholt himself looked slightly puzzled at the Roque's words to Matthew, but he quickly shrugged off his surprise. Apparently they were both wrong in what they'd heard about the city. Or perhaps monks were welcome in the abbey even on a festival day, whereas regular worshippers would not. Time would tell which rule applied to a man like himself. He saw Brother Matthew off with a friendly wave, supposing that they would meet again sooner or later, and most likely within the monastery itself.

At the soldier's call, Arnholt ambled forward, leaning on his staff as he went. "Bram Beacon, sir. I come to the city to take up the cloth at the Light of the One Monastery. If they'll have me." Briefly he cast up his gaze to the heavens and back down, and crossed himself with the sign of the Eye... Dominicus' Eye, of course. "And if God wills it, as I suppose He does."

Baxter stood, leaning against a tree near the gates on the other side, watching people entering the city. He fiddled with a stick in his hand, trying to find a suitable target. He eyed Arnholt, shrugging slightly but then noticing the tall man behind him. He grinned widely, muttering "Perfect" Then awaited the time for the tall man to enter the city. Baxter quickly turns his grin into a faint smile, seeming to enjoy the sunny day while calmly keeping his eyes locked onto Tarnuun.

The merchant took a little chance after glancing at Tarn's outfit. "Hmm you are visiting Roque, then, sir?" He lifted two massive eyebrows. "You must remember to come visit the Bazaar. We will have the finest display of leathers and hides, I assure you!"

Tarnuun nods at the friendly gesture.
-" I'll make sure I'll come by and check out what you have to offer sir."
With those two eyebrows lifted higher than they should be, Tarnuun turned back to facing the guards at the city gates still waiting for the monk infront of him to enter. Tarnuun thought to himself why on earth that merchant was looking at him with such an odd expression to his face but quickly forgot it.

Tarnuun later heard the demand or order from the guards to the monk, Matthew, that he had to report to the Monastery. But it seemed that he was walking in a different direction, or so Tarnuun thought, but he didn't mind. People have their own free will, don't they? Tarnuun didn't think more of that and stepped a bit forward since it was the monk's turn infront of him.

Tarnuun still wondering when the heck he will get in still couldn't stand still. Tarnuun looking around as usual, gazed in the city and noticed a man standing up against a tree.

He grinned widely, muttering "Perfect" Then awaited the time for the tall man to enter the city. Baxter quickly turns his grin into a faint smile, seeming to enjoy the sunny day while calmly keeping his eyes locked onto Tarnuun.

Tarnuun looked back with a very confused look. Why is he looking at me, Tarnuun thought. Tarnuun did manage to see his mouth move, but couldn't make out what was being said and then turned to look at something else, trying to avoid eye contact from that stranger.

"Bram Beacon....hm, you two came in together then?" the guard pointed at the departing Matthew with a careless thumb. "Wouldn't be surprised if you'd find more of your brothers and sisters gathering. Always happens with the parade. But th..."

A glance from what seemed to be a passing superior quieted the man down, no matter what he had been about to say. After the red-haired officer left for the guardhouse on the right, the Roque continued: "Alright, same story. Monestary to your right when you enter the gates. Here's your pass. Don't loose it. Might be asked for at any time. Enjoy your stay. NEXT!"

Gone was the need for banter. With a quick look over his shoulder the administrator assured himself that he was not in for a flogging as he called in the next in line.

Appearantly it was Tarnuun's turn, as the shuffling people behind him more or less forced the big man to move forward whether he wanted it or not.

Watching the second monk walk in, it seemed to be Tarnuun's turn.
Whilst walking up to the counter, he was there before the guard even managed to yell "NEXT!". With a puzzled look to him as if Tarnuun knew that the guard only did that to be a nuisance to the people.

He then quickly said.
-"Tarnuun. Returning home."
Tarnuun stood firmly as if a soldier would on a stance or standing on guard. Tarnuun didn't say much except await the reply from the guard.

While waiting, Tarnuun just took one glance over to the man at the tree to see if he was still there.

Baxter was still at the tree, though not seeming to pay any attention to Tarnuun. Instead he seemed to be deep into a conversation.

He glanced quickly in the direction of the gate to see if the man was still there, noticing it was Tarnuun's turn to enter the city.

"I better pull this off or I'll have no food on the table tonight.." He thought.

Though the guard's supposition was only technically correct, Arnholt smiled and bent his head agreeably. Whatever will get me in the city faster. He actually would have been interested to hear what the man had to say about monks and nuns gathering in the city, but it was not to be, and shortly thereafter he was dismissed to enter Roque proper.

"Thank you, sir," Arnholt said, accepting the pass. "God bless."

And then he was off, whistling a Oneist battle hymn as he went, and staff tapping the ground with every step. Inwardly, he marveled once again how easily being a churchman... even a prospective churchman... could buy one access so easily, and without any awkward questions asked. This monk stuff works so well, it's a wonder everybody doesn't do it. Last time, however, the deception had been temporary: the result of a mere happy coincidence. This time it was for keeps.

Righteous grant the illusion of respectability should continue serving him so well in the future.

"May the One watch over you." The guard repeated out of sheer custom. His eyes were already moving over the rest of the queue and he did not like what he saw.

A deep sigh later he started to note down Tarnuun's comments.

Should have kept my own shift. Should not have played it away! But I had such a good hand of cards. How did he manage to get four Roses anyway?

The unfortunate cardgame played through his head when the man noticed he missed some information to make it fitting.

"Ehrm." He looked from the sheet back up to Tarnuun. "Last name? Occupation? Reason for returning?"

Appearantly the blue-clad man was not paying attention, for instead of listening to the guard, he was looking at the gates!

The desk guard looked over his shoulder in the same direction, but saw nothing that looked out of the ordinary. Sure, people were waiting, but weren't they always?

Tarnuun watched the monk in black walk of whistling his hymn and turned back to the counter where the guard was.

-"Tarnuun is the name sir, no last name."
He replied quickly.

-"Occupation, none. And my reason for returning is from the army, sir."
Tarnuun tried to keep his answers simple and short, as if he was anxious to get inside. He still remembered the wrecked houses and was worried for the rest of the city, not to mention his own family.

Tarnuun kept his focus onto the guard as long as they were speaking, and didn't pay any attention to the man inside by the tree.

"Hrm..Tarnuun from Roque d'Ancourt...returning soldier...no profession." After noting this down th Roque looked up again with a frown. "You're realize we don't allow vagabonds...you're gonna need to prove you can make your own living without resorting to begging, sir." There was considerable doubt in his voice. "All nice and well to have a King's man back in town, but we can't go around paying your way. So, what's your plan? How do you intend to earn your way?"

"Oh for crying out loud.." The merchant behind Tarnuun sighed, so sure he would have been up soon. Now it seemed like a whole new discussion was going to spark up.

."Returning home to my family sir, so yes I do have a plan to provide for myself. I have done so for the passed couple of years, sir."
Tarnuun thought that this wouldn't have to be necessary to get back home. It's as if he was being wasn't allowed in his own home.

Tarnuun looked towards the merchant with a small apology and turned back to the guard, hoping to get this done and over with. He knew himself what a pain it is to wait in line and could see that the merchant also wanted to enter.

It was beginning to look like a game of fastball, playing the ball back and forth. The guard could not help but wonder if Tarnuun had received a blow on the head. After all. he did not seem to understand the importance of explaining his possible job to the very person that could deny him entrance to the city.

"Right, let's try that again. Mister Tarnuun...you can tell me you will provide for yourself, but unless you tell me what that plan is, you are not getting your city pass. Do I make myself clear?" It was not exactly sarcasm in his voice, rather a kind of tiredness of having to repeat himself.

"I can't let you in unless I have a solid profession on this sheet." He waved at the empty space beneath the name.

Baxter had left the conversation and once again looked at the gate where the tall man and the guard were talking. He had moved a bit closer to listen in on their conversation to see if he could hear anything useful, but this was getting a bit dull, he thought. Baxter Started walking towards the gate with determination and stopped near the guard.

"Hey, I've been waiting for you" He said, looking at Tarnuun. "You were supposed to be at the the store two hours ago, I see you're stuck here.."

Baxter turned to the guard. "Are you going to let him through? We have lots do do with the parade and all, I need all the help I can get at the store, y'know?"

"This better be worth the trouble" He though for himself.

Tarnuun turned his look over to the man inside the city.

-" Sorry sir for coming late, I got lost along the way."

Afterwards turning back to the guard to answer his question.

-" Apologies for not making myself clear, sir. I am hear to work at a local store and help for the parade."

Tarnuun apparently tried following the man's example about the store, and greatfully accepted the plan. After all, he was anxious to get inside.

Abruptly the guard turned around, regretting the motion instantly. He winced slightly.

Ooooo neck...ow...double ow...blimmin practices...never gonna challenge Grymus again. Never! Damn blacksmith...shoulda beaten him in that fight.

"Right...am I to understand that you might not have a profession but you do have a job lined up?" He looked from the one man to the other, but in all fairness there was very little he could do to object. The queue was growing as they spoke and really, Tarnuun did not look as if he'd be a devastating addition to the city.

"Ah, very well. Profession: salesman." He noted down and handed over the pass to the blue-clad man. "Enjoy your stay and remember to carry your pass with you at all times."

The guard sighed. "NEXT!"
