OOC: Information for Players at the University

Post by Guest »

First of all, welcome. Glad you could join us! The University is Tazlure's primary spot for all things magickal right now, and we look forward to many interesting tales here. If you have questions after reading this, please feel free to post them in the Q&A. This document is intended to give you some information about the University in general, which you can use when playing your character (or not: the choice is yours). There's also a little here about how we intend to run things here, so that you, as a player, know what you can expect.

I'd like to begin the explanation by telling you about the way the University's modding team runs the stories here. You see, a while ago, the university was purely a place where you came to have your character learn magick. Literally. You had to roleplay the classes, and you got your magick skills that way. obviously, we don't do things like that around here now. Let me explain how we do do it, then.
You will be seeing very little 'lesson' threads around - only one or two, for flavour. As a character enrolled as a student (or part of the staff) at the University of Magick, we assume that you are following classes unless you'd like to have it some other way. This learning takes place in the background. We'd love it if you referred to your character's everyday experiences in the classroom in a thread every now and then, but we don't intend to actively portray it. Instead, we focus on life at the university outside of class times. And in a place the side of a small town, where magick reigns supreme, there are many stories to be told. Yours will be one of them.
Of course, since in Tazlure you can technically only gain skills if you earn them by using them in some way in the story you're engaged in, it will be hard for your characters to actually learn any skills related to magick in this way. We have a solution for that, though.
Whenever a character enrolls, he or she is asked about her preferences. After that, we assume that she spends her free time (within reason) following classes and brushing up on her skills in the library and training fields. For each part of free time that isn't actually filled somewhere in a story, we consider your character to be slowly using the skills relevant to her choices. Let me give you an example.
Say Ellis the sorceress has enrolled in the University, expressing an interest in elemental magicks. She also wants to pursue skills in academic researching. She doesn't want to become a battlemage, and instead opts to become a pure sorcerer. Over the period of Samheen 4th to Samheem 7th, she engages in two short adventures and three threads of player interacting (she spends a lot of time at night in the pub). This leaves her with the mornings of Samheen 5th and 6th and the afternoon of Samheen 6th not covered in any thread she was in. We assume that she spent those times in classes or in the library. At the end of her latest adventure, her moderator will award her skill stars in some skills that she would have used during those times of study, including her magick skill and her research skill.
Of course, you're thinking, hang on, that's not fair. Ideally, if you like Tazlure and hang around here a lot, you will be penalized because you post a lot and so your character will be active more often, leaving less time uncovered in threads. Don't worry about that, though. Chances are you'll actually get more skill stars in the end, because you were in more threads than the guy who was only in a few and thus had lots of time uncovered.

More to come here, later. For now, if you have any questions, leave them at the Q&A thread, and I'll add sections here when necessary.
But first, for now: go play, and have fun!
