Late ET Samheen 25th - Recuperating at The Sure Haven Inn

Post by Guest »

It had been a very long day and Jarius just needed to rest. At least he had work now, but it was very demanding and his body was surely not use to the physical labor of lifting crates. The journey back to a more pleasant and quiet area of the city was a welcomed experience after days of walking through a poor and rowdy area of the city to find a poor area of rest, sometimes an inn and sometimes an alley. That was when he had no money to spare, however now with the job working for the merchant at least he had a flow of income that could afford him a room at a nicer inn. He wasn't looking for anything special, just a place that had a bed and lacked the rats.

Coming upon The Sure Haven Inn the young man, after a long day at the docks squinting due to the sun, squinted again trying to make out what the sign read. They obviously needed it repainted because it was way too difficult to understand. Walking up to the obviously very worn wooden door Jarius opened it and stepped inside. Looking around nearly immediately Jarius felt warm almost instantly by the heated room and the warm attitude of the establishment. The feeling was greatly welcomed after the rising hostilities in the city recently, however he tried to remain unaware of what was going on so he could stay out of it. He did not want to get himself involved in something that did not concern him.

Caught off guard as he was in thought for a moment Jarius looked up to see the human barman behind the bar speaking to him. "Namaste," he said and then approached closer standing on the other side of the bar, his weary face with a smudge of dirt along the right cheekbone. "It has been a long day and I am in need of a room for the night. Also, I could use a glass of your finest drink," he said with a small smirk as he sat down. If he had been in private he surely would have sighed very loudly as he sat, however he refrained from doing so, but the feeling of sitting felt so very good right now.

Brushing his hand through his hair he scratched his head very briefly as he was slowly, but surely relaxing. Had he been able to sleep in for the night he surely would have drank himself under the table, but it was another early rise tomorrow and he knew better to drink more than one. One and that was it, then bed, he wished to clean himself up as well but he didn't know if he could do much more than a simple quick wash. Looking every now and then at other customers and anyone who was in view was a normal habit of Jarius, even if he was tired. He was always observant, and although he would have liked to attribute that to military training, which surely some of it was, most of it came from his paranoia. Looking back at the barman he waited for his drink and a key to a room.

The taproom was fairly full, as could be expected at the beginning of EveningTide. Groups of revelers, mostly human with a few achadhiel and the rare adhiel, surrounded small tables that dotted the room. They were boistrous, but not loud, bits of their conversation floating above a lull here and there. Mostly it was mundanity - talk of women, talk of labor, talk of fights or gambling. Some was talk of the Caesar's death and his body having been escorted through Kislovan. But every once in awhile an angry word or two would break through, veiled talk about how things should change around here, that someday the powerful might find themselves not in as much control as they previously thought.

It was only when those bits of conversation could be heard that the barman would look sternfully at the speakers, and a touch fearfully at the adhiel seated in the far corner.

It was just after one such exchange that Jarius caught the man's attention. "A room, my friend? Why certainly. Our rooms are small but clean. Bed and a basin in each room. Would you be interested in staying long?" The price was far more than the inn's he'd found in the poorer sections of town, but about what he'd expected for where he now sat.

As he spoke, he drew an amber colored ale from the tap, filling a large mug until the foam quivered at the top. "And this is a special brew made by my wife's brother. Call it Kislovani Kiss. Has all the sweetness of your most beautiful Kislovani Maiden, but just like her, it can be the beginning of a world of trouble if you're not careful." A large grin split his weathered face as he placed the mug on the bar before the Muchislie fighter-come-dock worker. The key, however, waited until he saw the color of the man's coin.

The taproom was full and loud, however Jarius barely noticed much going on around him that didn't concern him or heard too much as he was just that tired. The taproom was nearly full of all men, however it seemed that the bartender had the place under control as his stares could make any man stop what he was doing. Laughing under his breath Jarius looked up again as the bartender addressed him after dealing with a customer by a stern look alone.

"Yep, I need a room, at least for a few days. I may be staying much longer, but at this time I am sure. Give me a room for 5 days." Looking at the mug as the bartender filled it with an amber colored ale with a good layer of foam at the top, Jarius looked up at the bartender wondering if he was actually suppose to drink that stuff. It looked like it certainly had some kick to it. Pulling out the coin's necessary for the cost of the ale Jarius laid it on the table before the man's hand and then waited for the cost of the room for the necessary days.

Lifting the mug of ale to his lips Jarius took a big gulp and set it down as his mouth burned. "My good man that is some good stuff right there. My compliments to your brother-in-law. You are one lucky man." Laughing briefly Jarius took another swig of ale before continuing, while he still had the bartender's attention. "If this is how sweet a beautiful Kislovan maiden is, I am definately in a world of trouble." Smiling as he pulled out the amount of coins needed for the room Jarius paid for the room and then got back to drinking.

His level of tiredness began to wear away with each sip, however due to just how tired he was the alcohol was certainly getting to him quite quickly. It wasn't long before he finished the first ale, but he refrained from requesting another mug and instead sat there, with his key in front of him, with no real desire to get up. Turning around partially Jarius took a look at the rest of the patrons in the room, he tried not to look at one person for too long, but there was definately some very odd people, all men getting way too drunk and talking about some very serious issues, and some not so serious.

The barman quoted a price for the five nights, took Jarius' money and slipped him a key across the smooth wood between them. "Room three, top of the stairs to your left," he instructed. "Once you know you'll need to stay longer, just let me know. I'm here every day from open to close, mid morningtide to about mid Gravetide."

He watched as Jarius took a large drink of the ale, face split in a wide grin at his patron's obvious enjoyment. "I'll be sure to pass along your compliments," the barman agreed.

Dark eyes twinkled at the dockman's observation about Kislovan Maidens. "That you will, my boy. That you will. Just beware of the Maiden's fathers. That's where the real trouble comes in."

He gave the young man a wink before moving down the bar to assist another patron.

None of the patrons of the bar looked familiar to the man from Muchilslie and most of their conversation was the same as what he'd heard at the docks, only more... boistrous. If he had the desire, there were several open seats, several open places in the conversation that he could slip in. Most of the men looked as though they wouldn't mind another friendly opinion weighing in on whatever they were speaking of.

There was movement at the entrance to the taproom, something that seemed very out of place. A young female adhiel.

(OOC: And that is Naddali's cue to enter! Enjoy playing, the both of you, going as fast or as slow as you need. Expect a few posts from me from time to time but don't feel the need to wait for your own interactions.)

Naddali was tired, both physically and mentally. It had been a very long day for her, and she was ready to relax. She passed a hand absently through her auburn hair as she walked up to the barman. "I'd like a glass of wine please, preferably sweet and of adhiel make if you have some." She pulled out a couple of silver coins and placed them on the counter. "I'd also like a room for a few days. Nothing fancy, just a comfortable place to rest." She looked around the Inn for a familiar face although she was new to this town. Naddali had grown up in the forest region of Caliboirneabh and was not used to the crowded atmosphere of Cerleann. The noise was a little more than she was used to, but after a few minutes she began to get used to it.

Taking the key and nodding as he got the direction as to which room was his and such Jarius looked at the man and down at the key. What the barman said next nearly made him erupt into laughter, but not only was he certainly too tired, but he felt it very improper, although the comment he made about the Kislovan maiden's fathers was simply hilarious and well noted. Nodding he smiled at the barman's wink and then watched as the man walked off for a few moments before turning his attention elsewhere.

It was just about at the same time that he turned to look at the rest of the scene of the tavern when he saw the door swing open and a very beautiful adhiel female walk in. She was certainly out of place because the tavern was definately more than male dominated, he couldn't even see another female in the room. Granted that he also just heard some bad comments about adhiel's, probably due to rising racial tensions, he thought that it was very unlucky for her to stumble in on this place. He definately did not want to have to get in any fights tonight, although for some reason as he looked at her for a moment, he knew that had she had problems coming her way he would be there to defend her.

Giving her a warm smile and nod he turned to look elsewhere as if he wasn't looking at her, although he knew he was. Jarius was quite well at hiding his obvious desires to look at beautiful women even though he found his own staring very rude and ungentleman-like. Looking at the barman as he attended to her, Jarius knew he would certainly get a look from him, he wondered if this was one of those Kislovan maidens he was talking about? Actually, he could not help to hold back a little laugh as the bartender did look over. Giving him a little nod Jarius went back to what he was doing, absolutely nothing besides sitting there just being observant. He was too tired to get up and walk to his room yet.

As Naddali began to look around the room from her place at the bar he watched as her eyes fell on him for the first time. Jarius could not help a smile from forming on his face, it was hard not to do when a beautiful woman looked at you. Although a little dirty still from work, mostly just that small smudge on dirt along his right cheekbone, Jarius was still the very handsome man he had been since about age seventeen, although he certainly appeared adhiel-like in the sense that he still had a very youthful handsome appearance.

Raising his mug to her very briefly and not far from the bar just to show his acknowledgement, Jarius also took the opportunity to introduce himself as he was very new to the city, maybe she was as well. "Namaste," Jarius began his introduction with, actually he was extremely surprised he wasn't acting shy like his usual, why he was shy no one understood, not even himself. "I'm Jarius Ormaetia," he said as he extended his hand for a very human introduction of a handshake. With his left hand palm up he pointed at the stool besides him showing her that it was open and she was very welcomed to take a sit in it.

For a moment, the bar became unnaturally silent as Naddali walked further into it. While there WAS another adhiel in the room, as well as a few human women, she was the only female adhiel. Not a typical sight for the typical denziens of the place.

No one attempted to stop her, in either word or deed, and soon the talk in the bar resumed, though at a much lower pitch than had been previously.

The barman was very solicitous of her request, pouring a large glass of Kislovani white for the adhiel maiden, taking her coin and passing her a key across the smooth wood of the bar. "And if there's any other way I can be of service to you, m'Lady, you have only to ask."

He caught Jarius' appraisal of the young woman and nodded with a smile. Doesn't have the leacherours look about him, so I don't think she'd be a problem in his company. Hope I'm not wrong, though. Who knows which family she could be slumming from, coming into a human inn.

He paused another moment to be certain he wasn't needed by either of the newcomers before joining an older achadhiel sitting comfortably at the end of the bar with a mug of ale clutched tightly between smooth hands.

She smiled in gratitude when the bartender handed her a glass of wine. She removed the key from the counter and placed it in a pocket before taking a sip of her wine. The liquid was cool as it went down her throat and her muscles relaxed slightly. When she took another cursory look around the Inn, she caught sight of Jarius. After he had introduced himself, she moved from her original seat to the one he had indicated. As she sat upon the stool beside him, she shook his proffered hand and introduced herself. "Namaste. My name is Naddali Ruis, and I'm from the city of Caliboirneabh. What city do you come from? I can tell you're not originally from Kislovan." She smiled to him before taking another sip of her wine.

As she awaited his answer, she took a moment to study him. She had grown up amongst mostly humans, so she tell that this Jarius was not an adhiel. He seems young, probably in his late teens. I wonder what could have brought him here? Then again, what could have brought me to a human inn? Lack of money... She pushed that thought away before it could finish. No use worrying about it now.

Jarius smiled as the young adhiel sat down next to him and watched her closely as she introduced herself. He had really planned on heading up to bed for the night a few moments ago, but now with a partner to converse with he planned on staying just a little bit more. Naddali was surely an interesting name, but the city from where she came was all the more interesting if not asimply n entirely long and elaborate name. Nodding as she guessed that he wasn't from Kislovan he nodded and smiled, and let her take a sip of her wine before answering.

As she turned back to look at him Jarius could get a sense that she was trying to study him by simply looking at him, and as well as his jestures, tone of speaking, and what he said and would say. "I can't say I have ever heard of Caliboirneabh, although I must say the name of the city is absolutely interesting and surely makes me want to visit at least once to see if the city lives up to the long and elaborate name that was chosen for it," he said with a smile.

"As for me, I'm from Odorex, it is the capital city of Muchislie. What has brought you to Kislovan? Back home my life has already been decided by my father and I didn't want to live that kind of life, so I decided to venture out into the world and find myself and see where the Father of the Heavens leads me," he said with yet again another smile. For some odd reason talking to the adhiel made Jarius feel very lighthearted and happy, a very different feeling than he was feeling of late. Death and confinement had been a common theme of his recent past and thus any conversation that was full of friendly exchanges was certainly welcomed.

Smiling again he studied her just as she was studying him. Looking back and forth to her eyes, to her hands as they held onto her drink, and to her posture that told alot about her, if she was interested in the conversation, him, or if he was simply a bother to her. Adhiel were known for having very deep discussions and being very wise and such, and sometimes a human could fail in meeting the requirements of an intelligent and worthwhile discussion to them.

Waiting to hear what has brought her to Kislovan, Jarius touched his right cheek and felt a muddy-like substance on it. Quickly grabbing a hankerchief Jarius tried to wipe away the smudge, embarrassed that he had introduced himself with such an improper appearance.

Naddali smiled and chuckled to herself when Jarius commented on the elaborate name of her home city. It was indeed long although not a good representation of the city. "The region itself is not as elaborate as the name suggests. The main city is home to many priests and priestesses of K'tan. being from the region, one would think I would be a follower of K'tan. I will admit that the theology appealed to me, but I never could commit to it. Instead I chose to follow the Father just as you have." She smiled warmly to him, happy to have found a friend in religious views at least.

"As for my reasons for being here, I am seeking tutelage in magick. I do not know if I have been accepted or not, all I can do is hope I made a good enough impression." As she looked back to Jarius, she saw him wipe the mud from his cheek. His posture told her that he was embarassed. As to what he would be embarassed for, she had no idea.

She looked at him with a serious, but gentle expression. "You need not act so formal with me, Jarius Ormaetia. I'm not royalty and neither am I rich. Like you, I have set out to make my way in the world." She paused for a moment, worried that she sounded too stern. After a second she smiled warmly to him and took a sip of her wine.

Hearing her chuckle made Jarius smile and laugh with her for a little, he was glad he was keeping her amused. Listening to her brief history lesson on her home city and her life there Jarius nodded and seemed very interested in her comment that she worshipped The Father. As she continued though he had no interest in magick, the fact that she chose such a time intensive study was highly interesting. It showed she had drive and ambition.

It was at this moment that he had wiped off the mud from his cheek that Naddali responded to it and his embarrassment. After wiping away the mud he looked at her with a smile and replied to her. "Maybe that is true, however you are surely of a quality, education, and beauty to be mistaken for royalty and wealth," he said with a little laugh and a playful smile. Moving on from that issue he smiled yet again and looked away for a moment before looking back at her again.

"It seems that we have many similiar goals, or at least ambitions. It seems we both have the drive to make something of ourselves, you in magick, me in whatever the Father leads me to do. Back home I was a highly skilled and valuable warrior, however, though that I left that life, my destiny, I believe at the Father wants it, is to defend those who cannot defend themself. My home is the battlefield, though I hate battle, unfortunately I am highly skilled at it.

Realizing he was turning the conversation to a sad note Jarius shook his thoughts off and smiled, "Anyways, my life isn't all about war and defending the weak, it is as well about music and entertaining all," he said as he lifted his backpack and removed his lute. Smiling he held it in his hands for a few moments before strumming a beautiful chord. "I would play more if I was that comfortable with my playing, it has surely been a while since I played last, I have been very busy. However, if you shall allow it I would love to play a piece for you in private anytime," he said with a small smile and a little bit of a blush as the comment was surely very flirtacious and Jarius was usually very bad at such things. He didn't mean to come off as so forwards with the comment, but he never went back to correct himself.

Naddali listened as he complimented her, silently wondering about his intentions. She was generally a very trusting person and comfortable around humans since she grew up among them. Yet always there was a small bit of tension always present… Maybe it was because of the events from 50 years ago, or maybe it was all in her head. She quickly silenced her thoughts and turned her attention back to Jarius.

She listened as he spoke of his life in Orodrex and his skill in fighting. It saddened her to see such a unique person caught in one of the many facts of life. Men fought amongst each other. If you were skilled in brute force, then you were sent to the army. Many of her childhood friends had been drafted into the military, only to return scarred and… animalistic. War is an evil that can not easily be avoided. It gladdens me to see that at least one person has not been broken by it.

When he began to play on the lute, she smiled softly and reached into her pack. What she pulled out was a small wooden flute carved with the likeness of vines upon it. After he had finished his piece, she brought the small flute to her mouth and played a short, light-hearted melody. It wasn’t anything elaborate, just a little bit of light after talk of darkness. When she had finished her piece, she put the instrument onto the table. “Your playing is beautiful. It’s fitting that one that is skilled in battle should also be skilled in music. I would like to hear you play more sometime.” She smiled warmly to him as a slight blush reached her cheeks. “My mother was a skilled flutist. She taught me how to play some, but I’m not nearly as good as she is. Maybe, we could play together some time. I could use the practice.”

When the pair had finished their respective playing, the patrons nearest them clapped spontaneously. "Not a bad job, girl," one older gentleman told her with a grin. "Nor you either, boy. A fair bit of playing." He glanced around the tavern with a smirk. "Not that you usually hear that kind of thing here. Makes a nice change."

He turned away from them to enjoy his ale once more, leaving them to their conversation.

Jarius smiled as Naddali complimented his playing, he surely hadn't played that much lately, but the skills of playing he remembered surely came into good use at the moment. It was very pleasing to hear his music in his own ears for recently music had been absent from his life. Death and daily hard labor seemed to be the only recent memory of his life. But, maybe things seemed to be changing now.

Watching as she pulled out her flute Jarius watched with a smile; he watched her fingers move over the holes of the flute as her lips puckered and with blew lightly across the piece. Smiling as the sounds filled his ears he nearly went off into another state of consciousness before she finished the short piece. Looking around as clapping soon filled the room Jarius nodded to them all and then clapped for Naddali whose music was far better than his own he thought.

Smiling again, as seemed to be very common as of late, he then commented on her music and about playing together sometime. "Your playing is very beautiful as well, and I will surely take you up on that offer sometime to play for you and play together sometime. I could use the practice as well, plus the sound of such music makes any day better."

"It seems we already have a fan base as well," he said with a laugh before continuing, "Maybe I should forget work and simply play music." He said this, knowing that it could never be, but it was a light-hearted addition to their conversation. He was actually looking to head to his room soon and retire for the night, but maybe just a bit more conversation. The extent of his level of tiredness was surely making him much more conversational and open, had it been any other time he would have been much more shy around such a beautiful woman, especially an adhiel, that was for sure.

Naddali smiled warmly as she looked around the tavern. A feeling of elation and comfort swept through her. Playing always made her feel like all was right with the world. It’s a wonder I don’t play more often. She listened as Jarius and some of the other patrons complimented her playing. Music. It’s what keeps us going when all we see around us is death and darkness. I’ve become so attached to music since it happened. Words can’t express my feelings properly. All I can rely on to give voice to my thoughts is music.

“Music is a way for us to express our emotions in a way that is more comfortable for us than words, I think. Any day without music is a day devoid of happiness.” Naddali was feeling light-headed and careless with her words. All her doubt and misgivings had gone by the wayside. Now, she was herself without the restraints of rules and society. She had no intention of retiring to her room just yet. After all, there was music to be played. “If you’re feeling up to it, mayhaps we could play another piece for our fans. This time, let’s try a duet.” A mischievous smile crossed her delicate face as she spoke. The tensions and worries were melting away from him as time passed. For that she was glad. Lifting the flute back to her lips, she began to play a short melody. It’s pace was slow to start, but eventually it would progress if the second musician would decide to jump in.

Jarius watched her as she looked around the room, she seemed to enjoy the elation of the crowd much more than he did. It was at that moment that he began to think that there was something behind the joy she was getting from the crowd, much more than the simple accomplishment of her music. Finally, as she turned back to him with a smile he nodded at her words in total agreement.

It was what she said next thought that made him just alittle weary. He wasn't too sure if he could play a duet, or play with her at this current moment. Jarius did not have that much confidence in his playing. Nodding with a smile though he agreed and let her begin. Listening to the melody and keeping the beats of the song Jarius finally entered with his own playing.

Deciding to be the background to her playing Jarius kept the notes brief, plucking the strings as she began the melody slow but would quicken as he entered. Watching her and keeping beat he tried to stay with her and provide a harmonious accompaniment to her piece.

Naddali divided her attention between the music and Jarius equally, trying to see if his mood would lighten any further. The pace of the music quickened when he entered, but mostly he let her take the lead. She wondered about that as he had seemed so lively before. 'Maybe he's not feeling up to this. He's probably had a rough day, and here I am keeping him up.' A twinge of guilt ate at the edges of her mind as the piece they played changed from a quick to a slower pace and then ended with a lilt and pluck.

She fingered her flute absently, the elation from playing having gone by the wayside. Her voice was soft and apologetic as she spoke. "I'm sorry if I have kept you from your rest. You must have had a hard day." She looked to Jarius to see if she had indeed kept him here too long.

Watching as Naddali seemingly ended abruptly Jarius looked at her and stopped as well. Smiling he listened to her as she spoke and the smile faded as he shook his head. "No, well yes I have had a hard day, but you have no kept me from my rest. I chose to stay, I'm just not too confident in my ability to play in public at the moment I suppose," he said with a weak smile.

"I'd much rather play in private for awhile, especially with you before I take the chance of playing before a crowd again. Practice makes perfect," he said with a smile. For being a swordsman and very confident in his skills as a warrior Jarius was much less confident in his skills as a musician and even his ability to converse with beautiful women.

"It is surely late," Jarius said by the lessening of the patrons in the bar, "Thank goodness that I am not to work so early tomorrow, actually I will be able to get a much needed sleep in. Must you go to the magick school to see if you have been accepted or haven't you gone yet?"

Naddali smiled shyly, glad that she hadn’t imposed on Jarius too much. Looking around the inn, she noticed many of the patrons either leaving or already having left. With a sigh she placed her flute back in the pack by her chair and took another sip of her wine.

“I would love to practice with you sometime. My own playing could use quite a bit of improvement. Mayhap sometime within the next few days or whenever your job allows for it?”

She would have offered to practice with him this eve, but she could tell it was late. Besides Naddali could tell that she was beginning to tire. It had been a long day, and she needed her rest if she was to be ready for the next day’s events.

“I have to go by the Palace tomorrow to see whether or not I’ve been accepted for tutelage. My prayers have concerned little else but tomorrow and what will occur. If I’m not accepted, I’ll have to return to my home. There I will be able to continue improving in music and possibly apprentice myself to a healer if nothing else.”

There were many possibilities for her, though not as many as she would have liked. Few things interested her like magic and music did. Sure, she liked helping others. Healing would be something she could excel in if she wanted, but it wouldn’t make her as happy.

It’s no use working yourself up about it. Let things go and just rest. You’ll find out tomorrow whether or not you have reason to worry.

With those thoughts in mind, she picked up her pack and bid Jarius a good night. She smiled warmly to him and walked up the stairs to her room where she took her rest.

Jarius smiled as he watched her pack up, obviously she was ready to go to her room and bed. "I would enjoy that very much, you know where to find me. If you are in ever need of a musical accompaniment feel free to visit," he said and smiled. Watching as she rose from her chair he nodded at her statement about going to the Palace tomorrow to see if she was accepted or not.

"Well may The Father be with you tomorrow. It was an honor to meet you, goodnight,"[b] he said as she said her goodnights and walked off to her room. Alittle after she left Jarius did as well, heading to his room to get a goodnights sleep before work tomorrow. He was sure he would get a very goodnights sleep because he knew that the beds provided would actually be beds. Lately Jarius had been staying at the worst inns there could ever be up to offer.
