Rain closed his eyes, leaning against the wall for a moment, then opened them again. Taking a deep breath, he quickly pushed himself through the crawlspace, smashing and prying at the loose stairs with the sword. Without pausing, he grabbed for the tome as he rushed past, tearing the book from the skeleton without regard, before making a dash for the doors.

In mounting panic, he had no time to consider anything else except escape. He had to leave, find some sign of civilization, perhaps in a tavern or library, to regather his thoughts.

Rain could almost feel the tug of the house as he ran through the front door and stumbled out into the darkened lawn, the moon looking nothing like it had the night he had re-entered Hammerlee. But, as he put more and more distance between himself and the house, things began to feel normal again, all except the faintest of whispers in his ear.

"Tick...
...Tick...
......Tick...
.........Tick..."
Daemons come out at night...and so do the rats.

Rain didn't stop running until he was beyond the garden and outside on the street. It was there that he finally stopped, panting from exhaustion and just a little bit of fear. Or tension. Or whatever it was that kept him breathless.

He took a deep breath, staring back at the mansion, then shook his head. A rest would be needed. Another time, perhaps, he could go back. When he was rested, prepared - preferably with some holy water, if such a thing would help.

Perhaps he could even recruit a few more curious souls to join him.

But for now, he turned away, strolling back into town to earn his well-deserved break from the horrors at Hammerlee Manor.
