Provost Office, Chy 27, MT (sidethread Luca)

Post by Luca di Fabro »

The Provost Office: Centre of operations, and located directly next to Pax Balthasar's portal, the Provost Office deals not only with the incoming and outgoing traffic of Pax (though at the moment it leans more heavily on incoming), but also with the allocation of homes to the new citizens, the allotment of food supplies, and as a base of operations for the Provost Marshall. Despite it's importance, the building itself is rather unimpressive. Larger than the other wooden buildings, but not by a great deal, it looks rapidly constructed with an eye to speed and practicality rather than design or taste. It has two stories, and a wide veranda on which is parked a desk, and usually a soldier of the Pax Honestus right behind it - made strikingly visible against the dark wood in a royal blue uniform.

When the two ladies had finally left the office of the Provost, Luca walked in. He had put away his liquorice stick for a minute as chewing on it, or keeping it in his hands while talking to the Provost would not show of much respect. He had learned this quite early in the Mouth.
"Good morning Sir!" Luca said with a bright smile. He gestured to the door wit his thumb. "At least, I could think of worse ways to start the day than two lovely signoras asking for your help." Hold in the smirk on your face...don't let the bischero know that you know that he is just an old playa.

He stepped further into the office, now standing right in front of the Provost's desk. "The guard at the gate told me I should come to talk to you for a place of my own?"

The Provost’s room proved to be a simple, plain and functional office containing a small desk and several chairs. Behind the desk a number of ledgers, books and scrolls were neatly arranged on a bookcase made of a light coloured wood. On one wall was a pinned a large map of the valley in which Pax was located, whilst on a small corner table sat several bottles of wine.

Sitting behind the desk was a handsome young man in his mid twenties. He was slightly built, of medium height and crowned with long flowing blond hair. As he rose to greet Luca, his blue eyes twinkled and a charming smile covered his face.

“It is always a pleasure to greet newcomers, whether they be a signor or signorina. Marcel Sanguine, at your service. I am very pleased to meet you. Please take a seat. Would you like some wine?” His hand gestured to a tray on the top of his desk which contained several wine glasses, mugs, a decanter of wine and a jug of fruit juice.

“Now before we discuss land and the like, you must tell me what brings you to Pax. I like to know a little about those who enter this town.”

Somehow Luca liked the room. It was pretty good for an office. He usually detested them. The splendor and the intimidating feeling of tininess that the overdone decorations of the interior usually tried to give off to the visitors was something that he absolutely loathed. But this was just a simple and plain office. And the Provost seemed to be a pretty nice dude. Sure, a real lady's man, smooth talking and all that, but for a Provost, he really didn't seem that bad.

Luca laughed. "Easy choice, amico. I'll have some wine, grazzi." He sat down in the chair, leaning back to get a little more comfortable than the usual formal sitting position. "What brings me to Pax? Well, signor, I'm sure you have already guessed that I am from Worlds Mouth. We are by tradition a merchants people. We love to trade. I am no different. I love to work on my commercial skills." He smiled as his eyes twinkled. The best thing was, he hadn't even have to lie..at least..not yet. "So I've heard a lot about this town and I think there are quite some trade possibilities here. New town, lots of new people, different cultures. Has to be all kinds of trade possibilities here! I...just couldn't resist!" During his talk he had become more enthusiastic and was now sitting at the edge of his chair, waiting for Marcel's response.

The Provost poured out two glasses of wine and handed one to Luca. “I shall be interested in your opinion of the wine, it comes from my family estate in Foreno.” A delicate, fruity scent drifted out from the red wine. If Luca tasted it, he would find it that it had a pleasingly complex character combining a crispness of taste with the warmth of a full bodied wine.

“So you are a trader from the Mouth,” continued the Provost, showing some interest in the revelation. “Well you are certainly correct in assuming there are opportunities here. What type of trade do you have experience in? If you tell me the details, I may be able to point you in the right direction.”

Being from Worlds Mouth meant that one had drank quite some wine. The Mouthies drank wine with almost every meal. Quite a lot even with breakfast. Luca hadn't gone that far...yet, but he did enjoy a good glass of wine. As he took a good sip, he could taste that it was a very classy wine. Not the cheap stuff they pour in the Den. "Mmm..Bellissima...very good wine, signor."

He chuckled as the Provost asked him about his experience. "Actually..I don't have THAT much experience. I come from a family of blacksmiths, but I never really could find the motivation to be good at it" His gaze became distant, like he was searching in his memories. "My dad...my brother...they always work with such passion. Such..creativeness. They always strive for the best." Luca was completely telling the truth on that one. He always tried to use as much of the truth as possible, it made things so much easier. And he planned to keep on talking as much as possible. Another thing that usually distracted nosy ears from the actual interesting subjects.

He looked back at the Provost. "I...tried to be a blacksmith. But every time a traveler would come by to ask if we could fix his sword, or fix the horseshoes, I wondered from whence he came. The places he had seen. So I too wanted to travel." He smiled as he took another sip from his wine. "Yesterday I finally had the guts to actually leave. As I said earlier, I had heard about the potentials for trade in Pax and I figured that this would be a nice place to start." The smile now changed into a sheepish grin. "I'm counting on the trade skills kinda being in my genes...I must have picked up something in the Mouth!"

What a load of crap...He was laughing in his mind. This is what he really loved. Making up the stories, improvise on the spot. Fooling people. He couldn't get enough of it. The world and all it's people were his playground. And now to top it off.. "I...I was actually thinking...maybe olive oil would be a good business..."

The wine had a wonderful taste that matched its heady aroma. It also packed a considerable punch. After his first sip, Luca felt as if he had downed a whole glass and he already felt a little merry and woozy.

“Olive oil,” murmured the Provost uncertainly. “Well the climate is not good for the growing of olive trees this far into the mountains so there may be some demand for imports here. I know that Kislovan exports such products.”

“If you are interested in trade, there are three people you might want to see. Matthias Klebb, the leader of the Merchant’s Council who also runs Klebbs’ Carpentry and Carvings; Menalar Samhaen, who imports many high quality goods into the town and, finally, Kaealara Mentahn, a businesswoman who is trying to devlop trade links for the town. These would be useful contacts if you wish to consider other types of trade ventures”

“Do you wish me to allocate you a plot of land? I am afraid that the best plots in the town have gone but we do have some left and one or two abandoned shacks should you prefer that.”

Looking at the glass, Luca nodded at the Provost's tips for the trading. "Matthias Klebb, Menalar Samhaen and Kaelara Menthahn...Grazzi. I'll make sure to visit them." He said softly as he could feel the wine effecting him. He looked up again and put the wineglass on the desk. "I've gotta say..that's some amazing wine you have! I mean..we drink wine all the time with our meals, but this stuff is pretty strong! I'm going to have to stop for now, seeing as Tradetide hasnt even really started yet and I can already feel the buzz. Wouldn't be a good impression for me to walk around the town on my first day being all drunk." He grinned as he could already see himself wobbling around the town.

He casually waved with his hand on the offer of a plot of land. "One of the abandoned shacks would do fine. I don't need a lot. Just a nice place for myself." Leaning back in the chair again, he continued. "But seriously. You said this wine was made in Foreno on your family's estate? So..are they already exporting the stuff to Worlds Mouth? Because I can really see a good trade opportunity there, if I may be so free."

“Yes, the wine is strong,” replied Marcel with a light laugh in his voice. “Fortunately, I was brought up on it as a child and so it has little effect on me. Others are not so lucky, you are wise to take it slowly.”

“As for trade opportunities, Miss Mentahn is already considering this. If you have something to offer, please contact her. My brother who oversees wine production will be visiting Pax shortly to discuss trade possibilities.”

“As for accommodation, I have a small two room shack that has recently been vacated in the south east of town. It is in need of some repair and so I can let you have it for a token sum of money. The last owner has departed for the Border Estates. He was an alchemist, I believe, and one of his experiments blew a hole in the roof, so it is a little damp. Still, a resourceful fellow like yourself should be able to make it a veritable palace, I am sure. Will this place suit you?” The Provost fingered his ear as he spoke, scratching an old scar where the lobe of one ear was missing.

It was a good thing that Marcel acknowledged that the wine was strong. Luca had no intention of picking up the glass again. He felt quite a good buzz right now, just enough to keep himself focussed. "Alright, it sounds like Miss Mentahn is a real business lady! I will be sure to have a talk with that signora! And I am looking forward to discuss the possibilities with your brother as well, if that opportunity presents itself. I'll be sure to take the wine slowly then too." He chuckled.

The shack sounded perfect for Luca.Things seemed to be working out perfectly. He had never thought that he would have been able to make such a start right on the first day upon arriving here. In some ways that made him feel sad. He should have left Worlds Mouth much earlier with Amerigo. They should have taken up their plans to leave and go to Pax for the trade...I'll make it a success, fratello. A real success.
"An alchemist, huh. Those guys never do know when to quit. I think I'll be able to manage to build a new roof. The place sounds perfect. Grazzi, Amico! You are most kind. What will be the price of the accommodation? And can I see it before I actually pay for it?"

"Well I am keen to encourage new settlers and you are entitled to a plot of land by right. So, I will let you have the shack for a mere two crowns. You can get any timber you need for repair from Klebb's. If you wish to inspect it first I will get my assistant to take you there whenever you wish."

The Provost rose from his seat extending his hand to his guest. "Shall we seal the transaction in principle? If so, then I must bid you farewell for I have much other business to attend to."

Luca smiled and stood up as fast and energetic as he could with the wine still in his blood. He shook Marcel's hand with a firm grip. "Bonno, bonno! Thank you for your help, sir. I'll follow your assistant to the shack." He had decided he was going to call any house a shack from now on, no matter how small or big the thing was. The word shack was just much better.

OOC: Want to make a new thread, or just use this one to go to the shack? Luca will just follow him to the shack so that he knows where it is.

(OOC: May as well continue here as it is a direct follow up.)

Sanguine’s assistant, Francois Devereux, proved to be a chirpy little man who waxed lyrical about the wonderful mountain air of Pax as he escorted the “trader” to his new home.

Luca’s shack

In the south east corner of the town in the midst of the residential district stands a small rather run-down, wooden shack. It was originally the property of one Nortimus Jones, a self-styled experimental alchemist renowned for his rather unusual dress sense, most notably involving a large hat with a black feather sticking out of the top. Nortimus had also styled his shack rather unusually by blowing a hole in its roof. After this incident, he had emerged from the hovel somewhat the worse for wear with his elegant clothes rather singed. It was rumoured that he had decided to retire from alchemy and take up farming in one of the outlying farms.

Francois opened the door of the shack to reveal its main room. As a consequence of the unusual system of roof ventilation, the shack smelt rather damp but otherwise appeared to be sound. The main room was a mess strewn with upturned chairs, pieces of parchments and mounds of debris. A table directly under the roof hole bore the scars of burning and a molten heap of metal was fused to the table. A shelf that had been fixed to one side of the room was lined with a number of jars, flasks, tripods and other pieces of equipment.

A small door on the right hand side of the room led to an unremarkable bedroom containing little more than a bed and small chest.

Francois shrugged. “You just need to make it watertight and it should be fine.”

Luca followed the assistant to the shack and his usual grin already appeared on his face when they walked up to it. It seemed like a pretty nice shack on the outside, just a wooden shack, nothing more, nothing less. It was perfect.

When they opened the door, the Mouthie walked into the room. He tried to step around the mess, not wanting to destroy anything. Might be valuable stuff in here.. He would definitely have to check everything out that was in the place later. Standing in the middle of the room, he looked up at the hole in the roof. His gaze followed a drip of water falling down from one of the beams onto the molten heap of metal. "Perfecto!" He turned around to face the assistant. "You can tell the Provost that I will be accepting the shack. I will come by later to make my payment."

Before the man left, Luca had one more question for him. "Uh..can you tell me if there is some kind of wood shop around in town? Would be nice to get this fixed today."

“I will inform the provost of your decision,” replied Devereux. “As for timber, well the cheapest option would be to buy direct from source. Hrothgar runs a logging mill just out of town and will provide what you require. Alternatively, you could buy from Klebb’s. He runs a carpentry and building business in town and is the Council leader. He’s a good fellow but it will cost you a little more to buy from him. No doubt he will give you a quote for the repair work if you wish.”

If Luca had no more questions, Francois would leave the new home-owner to inspect the shack.

Luca had no more questions and thanked the assistant for his help. He walked around the room, looking at the mess the previous owner had left behind. He wondered what all the stuff was, what was written on the papers and what was in the jars. Would there be anything of value? He would have to find out...

As a drip of water fell onto his head he looked up once more at the big hole in the roof...Better get that fixed first he sighed.

OOC: I think we're done here. Luca is going to the stone cube after this. He'll probably fix up the place during the Recess. Thanks!
