Simple Pleasures (late breakfast 31 jyg, Rosalie/Gerrard)

Post by Gerrard MacKaree »

This modest establishment is situated on a corner not far from Audrey's Other Wear in the Inner Ring of the Citadel. The main entrance is located on a busy street on the northern side of the building. Another bustling street runs along the eastern wall and on the western side, a narrow gated alley leads south towards the rear entrance.

Topped by a roof of mossy grey slate, the two-story building is constructed in weathered stone and freshly painted wood. Creepers of ivy climb around the windows and in the spring, a veritable rainbow of tea roses bloom from planter boxes along the sheltered front porch, and from the pots dangling from the overhanging balcony. During times of dry weather, chairs and tables can be set onto the porch and balcony for patrons who wish to enjoy their socialising semi-alfresco.

The main doors open into a spacious hall with polished wooden floorboards covered here and there by plush carpets. Bright sunshine floods the room throughout the day, but after the sun has set, the cafe is transformed - puddles of soft lantern light mottle the building, illuminating some regions with their warm yellow glow, rendering others shadowy and intimate by their abscence.

Dominating the southern wall is a raised stage where both professional and amateur acts are frequently invited to perform. In the southwestern corner, a green door leads to an enclosed stairwell which is also accessible via the back entrance of the establishment. The stone fireplace set into the southeastern corner warms the cafe during the cold seasons.

A series of wooden booths padded with red cushions lines the eastern side of the room. On wall next to each booth, square windows alternate with paintings and sketches commissioned by local artists. Chairs, sofas and high and low tables clutter the rest of the floor space; these furnishings are tasteful and elegant, in warm wooden and earthern tones enlivened by the occasional splash of pale lemon yellow.

A counter located to the west side of the entrance encloses a small open kitchen, tiled with terracotta, where hot beverages and sweet snacks are freshly prepared each day. From the beginning of morningtide to the end of eveningtide, the rich aroma of brewing coffee and baked goods fills the shop and wafts forth from any open doors or windows.

A sign at the entrance says
One week only - free biscuit when you bring your own mug to take away! Please place your orders at the counter then relax, make yourself at home and treat yourself to a few of life’s simple pleasures.

Gerrard had notified Gracie of his first guest this day: Baroness Marcada. He had asked she would would show her to his table when she arrived for the meeting. In the meantime, while Gerrard waited for the baroness, he sipped his coffee, enjoying a solitary moment in his mind, listening to all the stories the voice had to tell in all excitement about everything they had done in the Eastern Empire. The day had started out pretty well and hopefully it would get only better once the Baroness had arrived.

Rosalie, Ambassador to World's Mouth, Representative of Aveas and shareholder in several local and international business, was wearing green today. Not just any green, but a deep forest green, that was covered with a flimsy layer of light green that made her sparkle in the sun because very thin gold thread had been woven into it. Yet the dress was of special enough design to count as a day dress. An Audrey original of course. Her hear was fashioned in a practical knot, though a few curls had been allowed to escape to caress her collarbone.

Her held up high in an arrogant manner as if she was a giant, the petite woman made an entrance into Simple Pleasures were yet another business contact awaited her. Behind her a security detail of two Condotierre legionnaires in their famous blue & silver tabards, the other four staying behind with the open carriage.

"Signor MacKaree?" she asked in her throaty raw voice, after being guided there by Gracie. She extended her hand, wondering what kind of man she had before her. First impressions were always so important.

The man Rosalie was looking at couldn't be mistaken for anyone else than the one that had written her. He was slightly tanned and she could see the simple, loose black breeches as he rose. Atop he wore a long sleeved, red shirt with black trim. It was a tight fit and it quite showed the muscular build he had gained from helping the villagers rebuild their boats back in Long Danh.

He gave Rosalie a firm handshake and said "It's a pleasure to meet you, Baroness.". He then pointed at the seat opposite him, and took a seat himself.

As they both had taken their seat, he cleared his throat quickly and said "Mrs. Marcada, I've noticed you're a woman of business, not of small talk to work towards the matter at hand. For this, I'll cut right to the chase. I'm an aspiring merchant with little funding from my contact in the Eastern Empire. I have enough to pay for my house and office and I am able to sell the goods I have. However, I want to start a restaurant specialised in Eastern food and drinks. What I offer is a share of the profits until I have paid you back in full, or for a continuing funding a continued share in the profits. There are two options to help me in this matter, either by funding the restaurant, or the whole business, which means Eastern Exports and the restaurant I wish to start. I can't put it any simpler than that. Of course you have questions, and I'll be glad to answer them."

Thus ended his monologue and, a friendly smile on his face, he waited for the Baroness to ask whatever questions came up in her.

Things were going all wrong from the start. Had Gerrard done his research he would have picked up that Lady Marcada, or Signora Lo Russo as she was previously known, was a very conservative traditional woman. One who put the utmost importance on protocol and etiquette, things that obviously Gerrard knew less about.

First there was the clothing. Now that was a total embarrassment. Some loosely flying cloth around his legs instead of proper tight fitting leather breeches, followed by a tight shirt that.. oh scandal.. showed his muscles. Where were the loose fitting frilly shirts, the tabards? Imperial fashion was bad enough but here was a gentleman claiming to be from the Western Kingdom and he had converted to something foreign. Shocking and worrying. Who was in charge here?

To make matters worse, when she offered him her hand, instead of giving a swirling bow and gently kissing it he had the audacity to shake it firmly, as if she was some kind of dockworker. Rose felt her arm pumping up and down, fearing it would tear off. Hastily she sat down to cover the awkward moment. That he would wait till she was seated and adjusting her chair was of course too much to hope for.

As she sat there, stiffly, he launched upon a quick selling talk and they hadn't even ordered drinks at all ! No, this would not do. She had to stop this behaviour right now.

"Signor MacKaree," Rosalie interrupted him, in a soft but firm voice, as she rose "I never discuss business on an empty stomach. Nor do I entertain such thoughts with people who do not even have the civility to show any kind of upbringing. However, your offer is sufficiently interesting for me to make allowances. I shall assume you acted in good faith. Now, let's do this again, shall we? Baroness Rosalie Marcada..." she didn't offer her hand again, afraid that this time she would loose her arm "Please to meet you."

As Rosalie stood up and finished speaking, the Roquean wanted to smash his head into the table. How stupid could he have been. All his nervosity made him forget a few of the basic rules of etiquette. His face went red with shame and he rose with her. "Gerrard Mackaree, milady. And the pleasure is all mine. I apologise, Baroness, I'm quite new to this. Didn't have an upbringing that allowed for much, just happened to see a business and want to make it work." he said apologetically.

He then waved over for someone to take their orders. "I do not ask for your forgiveness, for I've been rude from the start. Yet I'd like it if you would be so kind as to discuss the options you see with me over breakfast." he said, as he shifted his weight nervously. "I could tell you stories of the East, however I think they would only bore you for they lead a simple, yet happy, life that I have grown quite accustomed to in the past few months." he continued, waiting for their waiter. "If you would like, you will always be welcome to visit me at my home in Roque d'Ancourt and taste for yourself of what the Eastern kitchen is like. It's different, looks less refined, but it's new for us. Something that surely will attract a lot of people." he continued, not knowing what to talk about, just hoping Rosalie wouldn't see this as part of the business proposal, but as an extra bit of information or whatever else one could make of it.

One of the waitresses caught Gerrard's signal, and soon enough a beaming young woman had finished off delivering the last of her orders and was standing at the table. The girl - known to the staff and a great number of male patrons as Dawn - turned to Rosalie first with a small curtsey.

"M'lady, it's a pleasure to see you here - what may I get for you two? Coffee is a favourite for a morning wake-up, perhaps an espresso for the bold or a cappucino for those with lighter tastes. And I'm sure you would like some food with which to face the day."
