The Oaken Gates to the Citadel

Post by Maeve »

This splendid piece of work is the main gate of Citadel. It's dazzling grandeur awes most first-time visitors of the city, and the mere sight has repelled the plans of invading armies throughout history. Consisting of two massive oak doors dubbed the Oaken Gates by Citadel populace, the gates are well guarded indeed. Visitors arriving from the harbour and the surrouding Fields must pass through these main gates before they might enter the splendid city of Citadel and experience everything the city has to offer.

This great gate, an enormous construction of Seven Isle's sturdiest oak, stands between the grand city of Citadel and the plains around it. An iron drop gate hangs menacingly from above the Oaken Gate itself, ready to fall down in case the gates require additional fortification.

These enormous doors aren't usually open though, unless larger groups such as caravans or diplomatic envoys must pass. A smaller gate within the Oaken Gate itself, somewhat like a large door, can swing open to allow people in or out, and during daylight hours, it usually is open. This smaller gate can be closed at any time, and magically fuses into the rest of the Oaken Gate to once again create a nigh impenetrable barrier.

OOC: if you are a citizen of the Citadel you may start inside and do not need to use this entrance.

Sam looked up at the sky. He was wearing his normal white shirt, breeches, and his silk tunic. He had his hat on his head, to protect him from the harsh sunlight. He just got off the boat at the dock, and his mind was flying by. He had now so much questions, he couldn’t express his mind at this time. He was nervous, very nervous.

‘Well, maybe going to the University of Magic on the way won’t be bad…Uncle said something about it, didn’t let him finish his speech though…’ That was the first thought he could put into action, he thought. He also needed a good night’s sleep, as he could not get into sleep the night before he left his home in Dort. He wondered that night the challenges he will meet in this place, unknown to him. He thought about the life of being a guard in Citadel, and the unexpected things which could happen to him. He was puzzled, but he decided to let fate guide him into the big world lying for him in the future. But he gave a sigh, shrugged his shoulders, took a deep breath and walked forward to the oaken gates, waiting for every challenge to happen….

The guards had just come on duty for their shift. They quickly straightened up the counter as the last guards left it a mess. Looking out the older guard noticed the young man wondering around.

"Young man over here. You must register over here before you may enter."

The young man walked over to the counter and waited for their instructions.

"Please tell me your name and the reason you would like to gain entrance into the Citadel."

OOC: Hey cyren. Guess your my mod, eh? :)

IC:
This moment was probably the most important moment for him, so he had to make it formal, and of course, polite to the guards. He didn't want a negative reaction from the guard. Sam then calmed down for a moment, thought about it, and then replied "Yes....sir, of course." He quickly walked over, and hastily checked the man and his looks. He didn't feel as welcomed as he imagined it would be, but he understood the customs of Citadel, as he had read in a book in childhood, years ago. He quickly looked back at him, and said: "Fine day sir. My name is Sam Encentran. I come from Dort, sir. I am here to pursuit my dreams to learn at the University of Magic. I wish to learn magic, quite plainly. I also want to serve as a Purple Guard, when the time is right." He then stopped for a moment, and gasped down a breath of air. He then continued on, "How's it going for you, sir?" After finishing his reply to the guard, he started looked around, trying to observe the area around him.

OOC: actually no I am not your mod.. but you will be getting one soon :D

IC: The older guard is busy writing down in the register all what Sam has told him.

"So you want to study magic do you?" "Well sign here in the register and take this pass and present it to the guard at the University Gates and they will guide you from there."

"Good luck in your studies Sam."

OOC: Thanks Cyren for all you help. I appreciate it :)

IC:
Sam was thankful for his reply. "Thank you," he said "Thank you, thank you very much." Sam quickly looked up, and started walking into the city.

Elouisa stared at the Oaken Gates- she had come to the Citadel to approach a new life on her own. She had dressed to impress wearing her red dress, hat and gloves and most importantly her silk-lined fur cloak given to her by her dearest mother at their parting. She stepped up to the guards.
"Greetings, good fellows,"she said, "I wish to enter the Citadel."

The young guard stood with his mouth open with a look of wonder in his eyes as he stared at the beautiful elf maiden. The older guard thwapped him in the head and yelled, "Corporal, Get a grip on your self!"

"Now young lady you say you wish to enter our fair city. Well first you must fill out these forms and state why it is that you wish to enter." The older guard said to her as he handed her the registration forms.

Huffing and puffing after dragging a large chest containing her personal effect Shandara finally reached the main gate of Citadel. Seeing it for the first time was something, if not for the fact that she was wearing a hooded wool cloak her awe would have been spotted. Sighing she took her place in the line of people that were waiting to get inside, never in her young elven years she would have dreamed coming to Citadel. Normally she would have been quite content to travel with her father, but he told her to go and make her place in this world and that staying with him would not help her to do so. Reluctantly she agreed, truth to be told she was a bit afraid to be on her own after all these years acompagning her father.

While she waited for her turn to speak with the guards, she idly looked about and spoke to herself trying to remember as much of the human tongue she could and hoped she would not unintentionally insult anyone. She shifted a bit impatient as always and also with all the leather she was wearing and the blazing sun were making her a bit uncomfortable, well she would not have to wait here all day.....hopefully.

As the line of people began to get a bit longer the older guard suggested to the other one to go out and hand the people in line the registration form so that they would be ready when they approached their station.

"You might want to take a piece of charcoal with you, so that the ones with heavy chests can put their mark on them and put them on the side so that they are free to walk up and finish their business without having to drag it along with them," suggested the older guard.

The younger one looked over at his companion and noticed him starring out at the line of people. Changing his gaze in that direction he noticed the elven girl struggling with her rather large chest. He quickly looked back at his companion and had a grin as wide as his face.

"Yes sir, that seems a sound suggestion," the younger guard quickly replied.

He grabbed the charcoal from the others hand and went running out to help the pretty elf girl.

Going over and over in his mind what he would say as he didn't want to sound to forward or silly and he didn't want it to show that this was his first post with the guards.

"Uh, excuse me Miss... uh... here is charcoal mark your chest... No wait... uh.. May I see your chest so that I may mark it.... No.. Uh..."

Feeling a complete fool the young guard took a deep breath and got a hold of himself and calmly stated, "Please take this charcoal and put your mark on that chest, so that I may put it aside for your."

Finally getting out what he wanted to say his face as red as an apple. He thrust the papers at her and quickly said, "Please look these over and be ready to fill them out when it is your turn at the station."

He quickly left the girl and walked down the line of people.

The girl looked like she was going to burst out laughing at any moment. She took the papers and began reading them. She saw that they were registration papers and that she needed to explain why she wanted to enter the citadel and where she wanted to go and why.

Shandara had been waiting for a while being tired of standing she decided to sit of her chest as one of the guards approached her holding a piece of coal. Shan look at the guard with a puzzled look on her face as he tried to explain to her what to do, she nodded once in a while. Then her face showed amusement because the guard face was red, the why of it of course escaped her. She took the coal and marked her chest.

Shan then looked at the registration paper, trying to read them but Shan could not understand what was written on it, she called back to the guard her voice thick with an accent.

“Wait! I Don’t Read” She said called to the guard struggling with the human words, of course she only understood half of what the human said but her knowledge of the human tongue was somewhat limited and sometimes she had to struggle to make herself understood. Now she wondered if it had been a good idea to come here.

Elouisa felt rather embarased at the guard actions, but continued to fill in the forms, stating that she wished to enter the Citadel in search of a new life in a prospering city. She handed the forms to the guard and waited for a reply

Hearing her call out he finished passing out the papers to the rest of the people and on his way back he stopped at the girl again. She was pointing to the papers with a question look on her face. He then noticed that she was an elf and he assumed that she couldn't understand human.

Praying that he wouldn’t say something foolish again he asked her in elven , “Lle merna salk?”

She gave him such a curious look that he knew right away that his foot was in his mouth again. He thought over what he had said to her and immediately his face went bright red again. He had just asked her to dance. He held up his hand in a motion for her to wait. He stood thinking for a moment then his face brightened.

“Lle anta amin tu?” he asked her. He was sure now that he had asked her if she needed help as the look on her face was relieved and she shook her head yes.

They stood for a long time both of them going back and forth until he finally felt that she understood that when she got up to the station that he would help her fill out her registration form with her information. All she had to do was give him the information as to what she wanted to do in the Citadel and why she wanted to do it.

Shan nodded to the guard, gratefull that he would help her, of course she didn't know how to right so she handed the guard her form so he can write human for her.

"Shandara Arykos"She said her name pointing to herself. Then seems to think real hard.

"Looking Job and.....and......." Shan snapped her finger searching for the right word.

"To....learn....killing & money?" She said hoping that was the right word she was looking for.

The older guard looked over the girls form.

"Elouisa Felicorum," he said out loud as he read it.

"Hmmm looking for a new life are you?" asked the guard. "Well what is it that you can do so that I may be of help to guide you to the right place. It isn't good for someone like yourself to be wondering the streets now."

The older guard gave her a kind fatherly smile as he waited for her reply.

As The oken gates of the Citadel came in sight Fingolfin heaved a sigh.

He finally came at the place he wanted to go to su much.
It wasn't easy reaching the Citadel though. He had lost his horse a day ago and had to carry all his belongings on his back. He was lucky he had reached the gates one day after he had lost it, beacause he he wouldn't be able to carry all his heavy equipment another day.

As he paced towards the gates he became more aware of all the dust covering his clothes and the disadvantages it could bring him if the guards would think he was just a dusty stroller.
So he wavered his cloak some times to remove the dust form it, and it worked quite well.
So he moved along full of confidence and a bit of hidden awe.
He grunted some times to clear his throath and reached the gates..........

Elouisa replied to the elder guard, glad to be talking to someone who was making sense in what they said.
"I have skills to teach Elven and I am a fine cook, singer and artist, but at the moment I am looking for an inn in which to stay before I decide what occupation to enter."
She looked at the guard with a satisfied look and she hoped she could get the answer she wanted.

The older guard picked up a pen and began writing something on a paper.

"Well Miss Felicorum everything here looks in order. Now as to an Inn, may I suggest the Burpin Dragon. They have fine accodations and are not high priced. You may just find someone there to help you find a place to work. Present this pass to the Inn Keeper when you get there. I bid you good luck and good day."

With a kindly smile he gave her a slight bow and waved her good-bye.

After the young guard put her chest aside he escorted her to the station.

When he walked in the older guard was standing just starring at him with a very curious look on his face.

"Do you plan on doing this for all of those people as well?" he asked him as he jestured with his hand out toward the long line of people waiting to be passed through the gates.

"If you do tell me now, because we are going to have the longest shift in the history of the Citadel," the older guard said in such a way as to not embarras him in front of the girl but to let him know that this is not proper guard behavior.

The younger guard started to reply back but thought better of it. He handed the girls paper over to the older guard and told him her information. The older guard looked the girl up and down wondering what she really meant by what she had said. Seeing an older elven couple in the line the older guard had the younger one go and get them.

"Do either of you speak human well," the older guard asked them.

"Yes, I do," replied the husband.

"Good, would you please ask this young lady what exactly she was planning to do in the Citadel," the older one asked the elderly elf man.

"It seems that she wants to be a Purple Guard but I want to be sure and this day I was assigned an assistant that is lacking in elvin," the older guard went on to explain.

The elderly elf man turned to the girl and they started conversing right away.

The guards noticed the very dusty elf coming up into line with a huge load of things in his arms.

The guard who spoke elven left the station and approached the elf.

"Here put your things over here next to the wall," the guard told the elf, "then follow me."

The guard went back up to the station with the man in tow. When they got to the station the guard asked him in elven what he was doing at the gates and what were his plans.

As the guard approached Fingolfin tried to speak, but the guard interrupted So he kept his mouth shut.
He should have known better than speaking before the guard had asked him something.
He putted his stuff next to the city walls reluctantly, and followed the guard to the station. He looked back to his belongings several times expectant to see a thief sneaking towards it to take it all away and hide in the shadows never to be seen again.

When the guard asked him why he was at the gates and what his plans were he hesitated for a moment. He hadn't thought about that before. He just wanted to become and adventurer and not least of all he wanted to become a wizard like the ones he read much about in his books.
I want to become a wizard he said, and I hoped to find a place for a good education in the Citadel.
He hoped that the guard didn't notice his little hesitation and suspect he were telling lies.
I came all the way from Tel Aranae Quessir for this purpose.

Shan smiled politely at the elderly Elf man and soon the two of them were engaged into a conversation in their native tongue.

"I really said that?"Shandara blushed as the elf man nodded.

"I guess I don't speak human as well as I thought myself to be. Anyway I came here looking for a part time job where I could learn how to fight, while I learn about the bussiness world in the harbor, and obviously i'll need to learn more human. My father was an explorer you know he made maps and so do I! of course they are not as good as my father's but........" That went on for a while until when Shan was sure there wasn't anything left to say, she watched the elf man walk back to the guards and explain everything.

((OK, i use color to see wich language i'm speaking in..... cyan = elven and white will be well human...))

A girl walked twoards the gates. She saw the line and groaned. These people always seemed to come when she was in a hurry to get home. The girl was of average height with pale skin, light green eyes and dark hair. She looked elven, except for her hair and she had a sturdier frame, so she must be a half-breed.
She wore brown breeches and a green shirt. In her hand was a long bow and a quiver full of arrows was slung over her back. She had been out practicing. The problem was she had stayed out too long and her mother would be getting worried.
She decided to bypass the line today. Several people made rude remarks as she pushed past them. Once she got to the door she waved at the old gaurd.

IC: The elderly elf told the guard everything that the girl had told him. The guard looked at her and gave her a smile and shook his head. He knew he was letting in a thunderstorm with this one, but maybe she could bring the place a little divergence from the strange goings on that had been happening in the Citadel ever since that Pan Fest began.

He wrote something on a paper and handed it to the girl. He told the elderly elf to tell her that if she wanted work that she might find something at the Burpin Dragon. At least they had rooms and were clean and not expensive. He told him to tell her to present the pass to the Inn Keeper Bill when she went there.
