Too much was going on, too much buzzing of people’s dreams and ambitions. Elaine wondered how many things had been left in the dark by making the contest cheer on the Caesar and his queen. She wondered about Ahren and his Caesar. How terrible for the both of them that the peacock could not be here, if it were only to comfort Anochrim and show him that he was not alone in the midst of this crowd.

The last pieces fell into place for her poem, letting the soft humming of the earth guide her. She was going to chance it. No speech about the Caesar loving this woman just yet. That would have to grow through the years. A reminder of this faithful city, the very earth upon which it stood and the support this earth lent him and any he chose to be at his side…that was what she truly wanted to give him. Her heart felt sorry for the princess from the colder regions, wondering how much she knew, how much she realized about where her future husband’s heart lay.

I will cheer for them…be it in a different way. It is my way and it sure beats lying to their face.

Her heart leapt. Her name had been spoken. With a quick apologetic smile towards her tablepartners the girl let herself be led to the stage. Once there, she kept her trusted staff in one hand, the other resting on top of it as she took a cleansing breath. A curtsey towards the main table and she was ready.

This is it. Mother, give them what they so richly deserve.

Without bothering to make up a title the blind woman started, her kind voice starting purposefully soft as if something -or someone- was just awakening. Making sure she was still heard, the words flowed from her lips as they arranged themselves in her head.

“Some things have been said
Some things were left unspoken
A victory was won
Yet darkness was not broken

Shadows marching day and night
Safe behind their task
Promises were kept and lost
Safe behind their mask”

Her voice grew in strength and conviction, adding a soft melody that carried her words and demonstrated the very song she spoke of, wanting to remind everyone here what riches still lay hidden, ready to be heard.

“A song speaks up from deep within
The city sings for you
A melody so sweet and pure
A song that must be true

A song that tells of dreams of old
Of harmony we know
The promise that’s been made today
Will add to this, to grow”

This was the risky part. Elaine was not going to mention the betrothal as such, but convinced as she was that the binding -even though not out of love- would somehow add to restoring the balance, she continued:

“The promise leads to season’s growth
To balancing the tide
The city cheers, the people smile
And stand by at your side”

Here it came: the most obvious part of her own song. She let her voice carry the Song she heard, no longer holding back or hiding.

“You have support, you have the blessings
Earth, Sea, Air, Fire, Heaven
Together you will hold this earth
And rule the Isles of Seven.”

With every ‘you’ the girl gestured like a dancer to the Caesar and his bride to be to let them know that despite the lack of names this was about the two of them.

Having said what she wanted to convey, no matter how simple she had chosen her words, something else tickled her mind. Another message wished to be heard. The blind woman took a deep breath and took the meaning in, quickly shaping it to fit the rest of the well-wish. Turning to where the Emperor and the Princess were seated the young Achadhiel continued once again before the pause was too long and people thought she had finished already.

The words made her heart sing, yet at the same time a great sadness envelopped her. Not understanding the flow of emotions filling her Elaine simply delivered the message, sending a piece of her heart with it.

“Love has many faces
Some are hidden, some are known
But once you’ve seen that hidden face
You’ll never walk alone.”

Realizing most of her words had indeed been sung instead of recited, she blushed and curtsied.

Good Mother, I am glad I spoke. I wonder if I should have used the same style of talking around matters. Maybe I was too direct at the start. Maybe it was too simplistic for these sophisticated people. Maybe…it does not matter. I said what I wanted to say and that is what it was all about. Let the others compete for the favours. You have been seen and you have been heard. No one will be able to drag you off into the dark again without at least someone noticing.

The young woman quickly tapped her way back to the available chair, curious what the rest of the evening would bring. Once the girl had found her seat she realized how fast her heart was beating. There had been something else in that last verse, something that drew her attention to the Caesar and quite a few others, amongst which -much to her chagrin- Marius. Elaine had no idea how to name it, if at all. It might have been her imagination.

Celestine clapped strongly for Elaine, who had spoken so eloquently up there. She wished that she'd been able to get hers into beautiful rhyme like Elaine and Adrian, but she wasn't a trained poet. She was happy just to be able to wish the Caesar well and sneak in a few subtle criticisms of the way things seemed to be done here in the Citadel. She wondered who else would compete tonight and what they would say.

A poet is she? He had wondered as to her use. A spy with heightened hearing was always useful. She was certainly pretty. Now, she aspired to be a bard. That would make her useful to have in a room, so no one would suspect her true purpose. Perhaps the best thing about her was that she had not been mentioned to him as a Rose student. So she was obviously smart enough to know that one could charm someone and learn skills of a companion without selling your body and soul to the Guild. He could never accept why a person would be so foolish. Even his deliciously ambitious Isabella could not be made to see the obvious, that she was merely a pawn of the Guild, whose services were sold as a pimp might bargain for a whore ... or a master for a slave. Isabella and he could never be perfect together as long as she was blind to the truth. Elaine was blind, but at least she could see that. He may have been giving the blond acahadiel more credit than she deserved, but his mind wanted to do so. The Guild was too strong at court and he was appearing to help it. The key was the word appearing.

As he clapped for Elaine, his eyes wandered over the room to locate Larbeido briefly. He wondered briefly whether he should kill the man, and free the city. But, such was risky, might not achieve its purpose, and would give Silk power over him in a different way. No, he needed to weave illusions instead. Illusions served well at court, for people would believe what they wanted to see.

Elaine was quite good. She did not speak with such artistic hyperbole as Adrian ... a companion. But, there was a simple beauty to it. It was not as masterful to the ear in its colorful whisper, but far more subtle and nuanced than Celestine's blatant attempt. Andolin was no trained poet, but he was not really a trained anything ... except a sorcerer's apprentice. He had always been able to bluff his way through situations with bald hubris. He wondered whether he could master poetry as well as he was mastering the life of a courtier. It might give him a reason to speak with this Elaine. She had appeared in the dream for a reason. He hoped that it was because she was to be one of his ... circle. Yes, that was pleasing to think. Always one to enjoy a limerick, he rolled over in his mind the variations of there once was a girl named Elaine. It was full of possibilities. Might she be full of possibilities as well? He would need to explore that further.

Perdita laughed at Abnor's observation.

"You guessed correctly! Don't worry about being distracted, there's an awful lot going on here what with the bards and the contest and the food," she began. "Thankyou for your compliments. I am here with Mr. Vanir Alfheim, he is a bard and also has many contacts in the palace. And what about yourself?"

Her attention was briefly drawn away with the appearance of Elaine on the stage. She felt a slight nervousness for her friend - Mother! Please let Elaine perform well! she prayed. The affection which had been kindled in the inn just a few days before had inspired a great deal of loyalty in Perdita. She smiled in relief as Elaine finished, and gave rapturous applause. Elaine's poem was beautiful - and the last verse so touching and true! She felt a surge of happiness that she had Vanir, that she was no longer alone. Perdita looked over to her lover, trying to catch his eye.

"Wasn't she fabulous?" she said afterwards, turning to the man opposite. "Elaine is my friend."

There was a hint of pride in her voice. Her friends were certainly doing well - one of them was sure to win.

Once again Elaine had been brisked away before Brogan could even have a conversation with her.

At least she'll be able to talk to the Caesar, even if it's not really him she's speaking too. It's more than I'm able to do anyways, how lucky she is. I doubt she even realizes she's living out one of my dreams. I cannot be mad at her though, it is my cowardice and lack of poetic words that did not let me up there.

Elaine's poem was the best in Brogan's eyes. It didn't talk about the love and bond between the Caesar and the Trothgardian woman. He thought she was smart to have done a poem no one else would do, focusing more on the Caesar, the bride, and the people, rather than speaking about the Caesar's gain by marrying the Lady Aesa.

When Elaine tapped her way back to the chair, Brogan felt ashamed for not having helped her back to her seat. The Caesar would have seen me help her back to her seat, and thought good of me. Still, she'll look like she is a strong woman even if her eyes-or lack of-get in her way. Brogan lightly put his hand on her shoulder, making sure it felt comfortable and not overbearing.

"That was a great poem Elaine. Your choice of words was beautiful and no one else will have a poem like yours. Your aspect was different and smartly played."

It was obvious Brogan was speaking a little louder than regular to make sure Varidhara heard his kind words to the Blind woman.

Anochrim sat up a little straighter, despite the amount of wine he had downed. For some reason this poem spoke true to him, reminding him of the voice of the Mother that always sang in his sleep as he walked his land in the Aether.

When the blind lady was done he was silent for a moment, not moving at all. Then he realized all were waiting for him and he woke up from his deepest thoughts and clapped enthusiastically.

Aesa watched as the overcome bard was escorted from the room, and she noted her betrothed's indifference to such an odd event. He was a puzzle to her, but time would make things clearer, she supposed.

The Lady-Warrior was lost in thought when the next poet was announced, but she quickly refocused to attend to the Page's performance. It struck her as more of a poetic story, and she found it quite pleasant to listen to. A small but appreciative smile touched Aesa's lips as Celestine spoke her final words and then made her reverence to Aesa and Anochrim. She applauded with the other listeners, but was quick to recognise the reserved reaction of the man at her side; another item that she filed away for future consideration of her future husband.

Then came the performance of the blind woman; a poem sung, it seemed to her, from a depth of understanding that Aesa found quite remarkable. It was simpler in form that the previous performances, perhaps, and yet it rang true to her. Aesa's applauded this performance as she had the previous two, but this time her smile touched her eyes; a sight unseen by those of the woman who had inspired it.

Anochrim, however, delayed his applause, just long enough for Aesa to steal a sidelong glance at him. So, this performance had touched the Adhiel as well, Aesa considered to herself, not letting her thoughts touch her features.

"A lovely offering," the Trothgardian observed to Anochrim. "Do you not agree, Caesar?"

Caesar's enthusiastic applause was not lost on him. It might serve him well for Elaine to win the competition, for it might provide an excuse to summon her to the palace for close coordination with the Office of Protocol. Perhaps, if he were lucky, Anochrim would let Andolin present the prize. Even better, he might assign her to his Office. Would that not be lovely. Yes, he would conspire for her to win. Who cared about the rest?

"A marvelous job," he muttered aloud as Anochrim clapped. "So simple, yet so touching." He continued to clap for her until Caesar decided to cease.

"Yes, " He nodded to LadyAesa with something of a rough voice because of the emotion that gripped his troath "That was quite.. to the point." The poem resounded in his heart and his master of protocol showed his political empathy by clapping even harder than he had for Celestine. Anochrim however remained distracted and as he concentrated on his fiancee, the enthusiasm of his servant passed him by.

The herald stepped forward and announced "The next perform is Vanir Alfheim" A helpful page guided Vanir to the podium.
Keerah

Keerah was quite relieved when Elaine returned to the banquet hall and was glad to concentrate once again on the proceedings and those seated around her. Celestine's was a very pretty story - it sounded like a tale a bard might tell on a chilly evening around the fire. But, Keerah sat up straighter and turned her full attention when Elaine was called onto the stage.

As elaine spoke, Keerah though she could feel the power of the Mother lifting and speaking through the beautiful blind woman. Keerah was moved by the words and it seemed that she was not the only one. In the moment after Elaine finished, Keerah realized she was holding her breath. She let it out slowly and turned to Lord Bertram with eyes shining with feeling, "That was wonderful! I truly believe that the Mother was speaking through Elaine tonight!"

She watched Elaine take her seat and wanted to go hug her! She knew she must try and speak to her once again before the night was over.

Then she turned her attention once more to the stage as Vanir's name was called. It would be interesting to see what form Vanir's offering make take. And she was fearfully glad she had not thought to try and compete with such impressive talent as had been shown tonight.

"Nice to officially make your acquaintance then Adrian Elsonrae," she gave him a genuine smile, if not warm and dazzling as she worked to keep her eyes off Andolin and focus her attention on the young Rose. In a different time, she could have had great fun with him, suspecting him to be as much a flirt as she. He was a Rose after, her smile widened into more of a grin. Still, she found little joy in toying with men these days, with the exception of one.

Feeling moody and defiant, she had a difficult time giving her attention to the poets as they delivered their verse, clapping in accord with the rest of the crowd without knowing what she clapped for. Her thoughts revolved around her betrothal dinner... and who she wished to be seated next to. It wasn't Bertram and her eyes sparkled with a mix of anger and challenge at the thought of her father trying to hook her up with this... man!

In an effort to pull her thoughts back to the dinner, she leaned towards Adrian slighty and asked softly, "Do you think it easier to go first and be forced to listen to all those after you or to go last and listen to your compettition preceed you?" Her tone was light, but her ineterest genuine.

He refrained at whistling at Elaine's poem as he normally would at a great performance, but he knew from the reaction of the Caesar that Elaine had stiff competition for him. He clapped with gusto, glad that if anyone should beat him, it would be her. After all, that last attempt was something off the fly.

"Actually, I find that if you have no idea what lies before you, you are more apt to give it your all. If you think the ones who have performed prior to you were sub-par, one tends to slack off. If you give them tough competition from the get-go, if gives them pressure to try and catch up... and some may not handle pressure well... though I do feel bad for Celestine... having to have to deal with that incident before she was supposed to go up and present. That was so unfair to her."

For a few heartbeats it seemed that she had missed the point completely, the silence strengthening the tapping of her staff as it touched the ground. Then the applause started and Elaine felt a smile grow from inside of her. Something clicked into place and she knew with certainty that at least one person had heard the Song as she had intended it to be heard.

The smile crept to her face and stayed there, her eyes beaming despite their lack of light. The girl looked down, afraid to start laughing out loud. It felt so good when the Song fell into place!

If this is why Bards want to have their crowds, I understand. It touched someone here! Maybe even more! Mother, I love you. Whatever happens next, I have had my prize already.

She turned her smile to Brogan, whose sincere compliment reinforced the summersaults her heart was making. "Thank you so much." The young woman whispered back, barely keeping from stretching her face further to mirror the sheer joy she felt inside.

And to think I almost did not dare to! Let someone else win the prize, Vanir, show your incredible talents, just leave me here enjoying this...this wondrous feeling!

Still giddy Elaine tried to pick up whether or not Vanir was on stage yet. By now she was very curious what he would recite. Knowing the masterbard it would be something out of the ordinary, as he had shown her to be so many times already. Secretly the Achadhiel still hoped Adrian would win. His poem still stuck in her mind, she felt the young man deserved this chance since Vanir had already reached so much.
Varidhara Amenti

Varidhara laughed softly at Brogan’s attempt at flattery. “Amun Rah was my home, or more specifically, Abu’Sahir. It is called the City of Water, and while it is the most beautiful place I have ever seen, it was so many yahren before I graced Tazlure.”

She might have went on about the city, but as she glanced over, the girl spotted Elaine taking her seat at the table again. Despite the other woman’s lack of sight, Varidhara gave her a friendly smile. Brogan took a moment to introduce them, though she had already met the blind woman once before, which was exactly what Elaine told the man.

“It’s wonderful to see you again, Elaine.” She smiled again, her words were genuine.

Following everyone else’s cue, the tanned Achadhiel quieted down, waiting to hear what Celestine offered for the Caesar. It was more of a story than a poem, it was a positive message, and she enjoyed the change of tempo, and applauded politely at the end.

“Good luck.” She whispered to Elaine as the woman got up to read her poem for the royal couple. Settling into her chair, she leaned a little toward the podium, so that she could hear the words. She was surprised to hear the melody in the blind woman’s voice, it turned the poem into something more interesting. When it was finished, Varidhara clapped excitedly.

Waiting for Elaine to return to her seat at the table, Varidhara leaned around back of Brogan‘s chair and whispered yet again to the blond. “The Caesar will surely have been quite impressed, it was beautiful.”
Larbeido Darvino

No one had sat by Larbeido after Celestine left, which suited him fine. He had many things to think about, and the more he considered the meeting in Celestines room with Andolin, the less he decided he liked that idea.

He watched the commotion with interest, taking in every detail and filing it away for possible future use.

then it was Celestines turn to say her piece. He listened, and applauded loudly when she had finished, then was back at his thoughts until he saw the Elaine called to the front.

Her singing poem caught his attention and he was impressed by it, hard choice between her and Adrian so far methinks.

His thoughts went back to the problem and he made a decision, he waited until he could catch Celestine's eye, and waved her over.

Bertram nodded at Keerah, "Yes, that was excellent, I personally would put that just ahead of Adrian's poem now, though Celestine's giving them both a good fight".

He looked and heard the next name called and saw Vanir about to take the stage and spoke to Keerah, "I think Vanir will have to excel himself if he wants to better Elaines effort, in fact anyone coming now will have to be at the best, a very good competition, I'm glad I never entered now, my efforts would have paled by comparison".

He smiled as he settled back to listen, his eyes throughout whole time however had been flicking over to Kitlanya. He had managed, he believed, to work out what was going on, and had a possible solution up his sleeve, he would wait until he could talk to Kitlanya again.

ooc- So much to cover thanks to the stupid 'hurricane' that came by here.

ic- Vanir listened to Celestine's poem with genuine interest. It was always fun to listen to other's works, since the bardic arts was his first calling. The poem was actually more of a story, but creative none the less. He wondered how the Caesar reacted to the performance in his honor. The bard clapped as the performance ended, happy with the way Celestine held herself together. It was quite obvious that she was not used to being in front of such a crowd; however in truth neither was Vanir, yet he would never admit to anyone or show any signs of being nervous. It was simply the stubborn pride that he had inherited from his father that refused to admit weakness.

Vanir greeted Celestine as she returned to the seat across from him and complimented her poem. He started to speak with her in more detail, but was halted once more by Elaine's name being called. He truly wanted to hear her poem more than any of the others. She gave a truly inspired performance with her poem/song hybrid. It reminded Vanir of his own poems, which were often songs, yet somehow deeper. There was no denying that most of Vanir's performances revolved around him trying to impress some girl or another, so he often used subtle innuedoes or gentle humor in his own works. The blind woman's song was much more touching and real, something that truly flowed out of her like a river. The bard's thoughts focused on how Elaine thought she would never win, yet she seemed a strong candidate at that point. I wonder how she would handle winning this little competition. Would she be able to give the same performance at the wedding? Would she even want to? The audience might remain the same, but its importance would grow at the actual wedding.

The adhiel looked back over at Celestine with a genuine smile. "She did quite well, despite her initial nervousness. I am glad to see that she did not let her fear get the best of her. I suppose we must all overcome our fears eventually. Tell me, Miss Celestine, what brings you here this evening. Am I to assume you work for Lord Azarin as well? You have the look of a Rose to you, but you can never be certain."

Vanir barely began his conversation with Celestine when it was interrupted once more. The herald called his name and showed him to the podium for his own performance. He turned his companion as he arose from his seat and spoke softly. "Excuse me, Miss Celestine, as it seems I am next. I promise that we will finish our conversation sometime this evening, perhaps when I get back." It seemed that Vanir's moment in the spotlight had come already and he started to feel the words coming to him as if from Pan himself.

ooc- Edited for stupidity.

Celestine had been about to reply to Vanir when he was called up to the podium. She smiled encouragingly at him. "Good luck." She patted his hand and was about to sit when she spotted Larbeido waving her over and she drifted across the hall towards him.

Vanir smiled gently at Celestine and left her company to walk to the podium. It seemed a long walk under such nervous conditions, yet the adhiel held his head high. It would not have seemed very likely for a priest of Pan to appear shy or nervous in front of a crowd. The face was a welcome one to anyone that gazed upon him, however a thousand emotions ran through his mind. It was probable that only Eilish would actually know how he truly felt, since she seemed to know everything about him.

Vanir let his eyes meet with Eilish as he passed by her once more and smiled politely. There was a slight calming affect that her presence gave him, perhaps simply because it meant he was not the only panling here. Pan had become very unpopular in most sects of the palace, so he did not wish to bring too much heat upon himself. Eilish provided him a security and confidence that he had lacked, before entering the room earlier. Pan would never let anything happen to His daughter and she would not let anything happen to me here. I know Pan guards me, yet I must be left to my own devices if I am to truly do His will. The gods only know how nervous I feel right now. I am a bard, a priest, and a servant of the Caesar. This is my element, even if I have never experienced it before. Pan, guide my words and give me the strength to do your will.

Vanir took his spot at the podium with a quiet diginty, before turning to the Caesar. He bowed before Anochrim properly and then bowed to Aesa as well. He looked across the room as he waited for his inspiration to come to him, like it always had before. Pressure seemed to only add to his talents, when he started to feel the words forming in his head. The voice of the bard was soft and sweet, like many of his performances to his lady friends. There was a touch of something innocent in his words as if speaking of his own true love. The deep, blue eyes of the adhiel found what he was searching for in the crowd. He found the eyes of his own love, his inspiration for such beauty, Perdita.

In a beautiful field on
a lovely spring day,
two doves flew across
each other's way.

Each saw the other like
they had never seen before.
The instant knowing of love
neither could ignore.

They flew across the fields
and across the trees,
powered by Love they
could cross the seas.

A mighty storm rose
to defeat the two dove.
Fierce winds came forth
to seperate their Love.

The doves fought against
the winds with all their might.
They weathered the storm
and searched for the Light.

They broke free of the winds
and free of the rain.
They broke free of the their
storm with hardly a strain.

Love guided their wings
and strengthened their heart.
It gave them the courage
to make a fresh start.

The doves soared together
across all of the land.
The power of Love
was theirs to command.

Let us all learn a lesson
from the message of Love.
It resides in every heart
even that of a dove.

Vanir let the last words slip off quietly to increase the dramatic impact. He hoped that the message would not be too clear to most, but hopefully some would understand. He mostly hoped that the Caesar himself would understand the importance of Love, the message of Pan that he had been asked to spread. The young priest looked at the royal couple and spoke clearly with a deep respect.

"Many blessings upon this holy union. May your Love weather all your storms and guide us all." The words seemed to flow from him, from somewhere in his own heart. Vanir knew the power of Love, both Pan's and Perdita's, and hoped that they knew of it as well. He bowed to both Anochrim and Aesa once more, before stepping off the podium. A soft sigh resounded through him, although no one would be able to here it. Thank you, Pan, for your blessings.

Larbeido was waiting for Celestine to come over when he realised in his concentration into his problem, and listening to the Prose he missed that someone had actually sat next to him.

Turning he saw it was Elaine, "Sorry my dear, I'm so wrapped up in thoughts I did not realise you had sat there, Elaine is it not, My name is Larbeido Darvino, Guildmaster of the Red Rose. That was a lovely song you gave there, it will take a lot to better that".

Then he saw Celestine had come over, "Excuse me a moment Elaine".
He turned to Celestine and whispered, "Here is the key back, I have thought about this and do not like the situation that may arise, would you please tell Andolin that if he wishes to meet me, it has to be somewhere either very private, or very public. That is all my dear, thank you".

He handed the key to Celestine, nodded to her and then turned back to Elaine, "Sorry about that Elaine, oh I keep saying Elaine and I had not asked if I could, may I call you Elaine, yes ?".

Andolin was biased. He wanted Elaine to win. Failing that, he wanted Celestine to win. The name Vanir sounded familiar to him ... was it Rees or Isabella that had mentioned it? His memory would not cooperate at the moment.

He listened politely to the poem, noting that Vanir rhymed his lines more than any other. He had heard that true poetry had no rhyme, but he had to admit that he found rhyming to be more challenging. Still, the poem was syrupy sweet about love. It was not lost on him that the poet was staring at a pretty thing sitting with the commoners. If he has not yet slept with her, they will be sleeping together tonight. Yes, it was just the type of poem that would melt the heart of a romantic maiden. Etain would have loved it. But it was not the type of prattle that would appeal to a Trothgardian warrior who would be more comfortable skinning a snow beast than giggling like a pampered debutante.

The union of Caesar of Aesa was about duty, not love. If Andolin had crafted a poem, it would have been about duty, honor, and glory ... something to appeal to the warrior in each of Caesar and Aesa, as well as play well to the crowd. Perhaps I could be a poet after all, He told himself confidently. Yes, all he needed was a tutor, and he had one in mind. With a feral smile, he looked towards Elaine. Yes, they were going to become good friends, whether she knew it or not, or so he speculated. Usually he was quite confident in his abilities, but he was thinking that the blondhaired poet might be a worthy challenge. What was life without challenges?

Applauding politely for Vanir, Andolin sought to stop as soon as it was polite to do so. Let this contest end so that we can begin the dance and magic display.

He would need to meet with Larbeido during the dance. As his eyes trailed over to the Guildmaster, he noted that Celestine was speaking with him again. How curious. At least she was working ... unlike .... now where is Zhavon?

It was Vanir's turn. Elaine sat up straight, wanting to hear what one of Pan's champions would say. She could almost feel Vanir standing on the stage, that outwardly calm demeanour while around him the storm was still trying to break those opposing it.

From the moment the first words left his lips Elaine knew that this poem was not inspired by the wedding at hand but by his own captured heart. A smile came to her face, happy that the masterbard had found his true love, yet a little voice inside her was afraid that this was the wrong choice of poem for the occasion. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the Caesar and his bride will be glad that there is talk of love between them. Maybe not.

It was hard to imagine a marriage for anything other than love and Elaine hoped with all her heart that somehow they would find comfort and strength in eachother when needed and that maybe companionship would grow into affection. Who knew? It had happened before, it could do so again.

Now I really wonder who has kept to the rules set and who has conquered the interest of those judging the contest. I do so hope it is Adrian. His was definitively the best.

Her hands were locked in her lap until Vanir had finished. Purposefully she had let the impact of the recital slip past her. She did not want to think of love. Not now. Her own heart had other matters to attend to. But when it came to an end, she unclenched her hands and applauded heartily. It was a typical Vanir-Ending, she decided, smiling broadly. He will have Perdita melting in his arms after this. Oh my, to know such warmth and feel it returned...

Larbeido's voice cut through the applause and she turned to the Guildmaster. "No apologies necessary, master Larbeido. We all have our thoughts to be caught up in. It would be unfair to demand constant attention to the outer world, although it certainly would not be unncessary, sadly."

Hello, Elaine! Take a step back and stop rambling philosophicals!

She grinned at the man's question about using her name. It was such an odd question! Had she not been named Elaine, after all?

Well, no, you were named Eileena, small difference. Oh hush, already.

The whispered conversation was not lost on her sensitive ears. The simple use of a few well-placed words made her wonder about Celestine's loyalties. Was she not a Rose? Yet Larbeido spoke of giving a key back. Did that mean she was now master Andolin's messenger here at court? It certainly sparked a lot of questions, amongst which quanderies about Celestine's obvious new position.

She resumed the conversation once the Guildmaster addressed her again: "I do not see any reason to object, sir. After all, it is how I am commonly called." She smiled, making sure he knew she meant what she said. "It is a pleasure to meet you. I do hope to find you well after these tiring days?" The girl kept it as neutral as possible, not knowing what horrors the man had lived through himself.

Perdita watched expectantly as Vanir took his place on the stage. She summoned a greater prayer than the one she had made for Elaine. Here was his chance to show them all what he could do! She knotted her fingers nervously under the table.

She was not disappointed, however. Any residual doubt from the other day was washed away when she heard him speak. It seemed as though he was speaking just to her, and his words went straight to her heart. Did it describe the relationship between Anochrim and Aesa? Probably not. But it was the most beautiful thing Perdita thought she had ever heard and she knew that she had the 'Power of Love' and together they could do anything! Even if he did not win, this poem would be special to her forever.

She clapped as if her life depended on it, little caring that she was making her emotion obvious. Something at the back of her mind was telling her to stand up, but she quelled it, thankfully, and restrained her enthusiasm. It really was turning out to be the most wonderful eveningtide of her life.

Larbeido's eyes took a slight faraway look and a thin smile was on his face, "Ah, yes, thank you for asking Elaine, it has been a", there was a slight pause, " difficult time for the rose to be sure, but I believe we have weathered the storm for now".

He did a quick change of subject, "What did you think of Vanir's prose, it seemed a little too rythmic to me and I cannot help but thinking it was really aimed at someone else, also perhaps a little too romantic for Aesa."

He touched Elaine's arm to show he was being genuine, "I still favour your's winning at the moment".

Greeaaaaaaat... now Larabedo is flirting with Elaine...

Adrian thought to himself, seeing how flowery Vanir was... the Caesar and Aesa seemed far from the type which would enjoy that sort of romantic stuff, but clapped anyway. It seemed a good poem!

Give it up, Adrian... Elaine has so many suitors, and they could probably be better at keeping her out of trouble than getting her into it...

Still... she was the stiff competition he would have for the Royal Poet. He'd love to see Elaine get what she rightfully earned.[/i]
