It was almost a bittersweet moment. Almost. Anochrim had as much true say as to ruled the Empire as did Andolin. It was all a charade after all. It would be Rioja, Duke Erwin, Silk, and one or more others who would decide. But what if they could not agree? Would that not be disasterous? Or, to a man like Andolin, would that not present an opportunity? To be a kingmaker, or a kingmaker of kingmakers, was certainly a worthy endeavor.

For now he just nodded at Caesar as if in total agreement while his mind raced for ways to profit from this situation.

"Thank you, Your Excellency..." Adrian replied honestly to the compliment, bowing his head slightly.

He knew Helvania would not be in total agreement. The Caesar was still the Caesar ... even if the Circle would choose a speaker, would not leaving the Caesar out of the say of things be a crime? But what if the Caesar took a turn for the worst?

"... But we must also prepare for the worst... in the case the Caesar is unable to make decisions." Adrian continued.

Adrian had a knack for being able to see both sides of the argument. Helvania knew his health was waning, and wanted a regent in the case that the worst took a turn. However, with the Caesar still being well, the feeling of helplessness was not going to get him off that sick bed. Not with his stubborn pride. But pride does not bring health, only heart. It will buy him some time if the disease is eating away at him. He kept silent again, letting them deliberate the measures in the case the Caesar is unable to act.

At that very moment one of the Caesars personal guards entered and smartly stood to attention and saluted. "Your Majesty I have an urgent message for my Lord Azarin". With that he held out a sealed envelope to Andolin, "I am to have an immediate reply sir".

Opening the note Andolin would read...
Let it be known that the Lady Isabella Florentina would ask that Duke Arazin, Master of Protocol stand surety for the cost of travel to the Citadel. This requires an immediate payment or guarentee of 10 Coronets. You will not be required to stand surety for the remaining 30 Coronets unless you wish to do so.
Your answer agreeing or disagreeing to this is required immediatly to expidite this matter.

Your servant,
High Priest of the Dort temple of Pecunia.

At the entrance of the Guard, all conversation stopped. Anochrim merely nodded to the fellow in acknowledgement of his entrance and then ignored him.

As the Guard handed the message to Andolin, Anochrim lay back on his pillows, apparently lost in thought. The two ladies stood at his bedside, Helvania immediately assuming a neutral expression to hide her concern from the Guard. Aesa quickly took her cue from the older woman and did the same.

With a quick look at the note, Andolin was surprised to find that it addressed Isabella. He was not surprised, however, that it involved money ... his money. Thirty coronets! That is over 7 crowns!

Why had she ever agreed to go to Dort in the first place? Was it his fault that she had to accompany Jacob? He was sure that it was not, but that she would say so. For all the thoughts about money and blame, he did want to see her back at once, especially since Caesar had become ill and new opportunities presented themselves aplenty. These were the times for Isabella and Andolin. After her experience with Jacob, she would be all the more appreciative of him, he speculated.

Andolin asked the guard if the message could be returned at once that the arrangement was acceptable. If the guard was unwilling, then Andolin would have to send his own messenger.

OOC: Andolin the full price is 40 Coronets - not 30. You just need to stand surety for at least 10 of them - for which someone will call for, very soon :)

IC:
The guard of course having no knowledge of the contents of the message nodded at Andolins request. "Sir the messenger who brought this is waiting in the palace entrance chamber and says he will return immediately he has a reply. I will tell him that you said you agree".

With that the guard faced Anochrim and once more saluted before turning and striding purposefully out of the room.

The flicker the guard left the room, Anochrim rubbed his face with both hands and groaned. Lady Aesa quickly placed a concerned hand on his arm, but he shook his head slightly as if to indicate that he was alright.

“Ok, Andolin,” he called to his friend, and then went on, assuming automatically that he had the Master of Protocol’s undivided attention. “Aesa will have to learn all this eventually anyway,” Anochrim declared as if he had just thought of it rather than admitting having heard those words from Lady Hamilton only burns ago. “You’ll help her, of course.” Lady Aesa maintained a neutral expression. Only her eyes betrayed a hint of discomfort at the thought of what lay ahead.

“Now, my friend,” the Caesar went on to Andolin. “What do you think about choosing a Regent, in case I’m unable to rule for a time?” Even as Anochrim asked the question, he closed his eyes in a grimace against the returning discomfort.

... Well?

Post by Adrian Elsonrae »

Adrian had no idea who would fit the bill as regent in the case the Caesar took a turn for the worse and let the guard do his duty. He took a look at everyone in the room, keeping his poise of leaning against the wall with his arms crossed with an almost stoic look on his face.

"Well... we have His Excellency at least up and about with some of the most powerful people in the kingdom in the same room. Is it possible to summon the other members of the Circle over here while His Excellency at least looks half-well? While he has the voice, it may be wise to get everyone's voice in the dark circumstance that he loses it. Gods know if he passes out again how long he may stay out, particularly if it may take longer than expected to figure out what is wrong with him. Perhaps with everyone's viewpoint we can prevent a calamity while maintaining the Caesar's wishes while he is able to make them known."

He smiled sadly at Rioja, knowing she was doing everything in her power. He would never say that she would not find the cause, but knowing that things may get complicated, prefered to remain semi-optimistic that she could do it.

Adrian never thought he would take the reigns of a situation like this, but nobody else was making any moves... even if the other Circle members could not be trusted, the Caesar was up and moving, which could mask the fact on how bad it was.

OOC~ Whoops. Sorry Twi and friends. I somehow missed the post you made. This reminder post helped me note it.

IC~

Andolin's mind had been elsewhere. There was the return of Isabella. She was obviously in trouble. His patron was sick. There was talk about putting a Trothgardian barbarian on the throne as regent! In no time she would be putting animal pelts on the walls and ordering men around as if they were slaves, feigning that the weaker gender was instead the stronger. No, it was time for him to conspire against Lady Aesa, he told himself. Yet, at the last minute, the image of Isabella in his mind colored his judgment.

Hearing, at last, Anochrim's question, Andolin rehearsed his words silently. "It should only be in the direst of situations that a regency should be considered. It is you who is the heart of the Empire, my Caesar," he flattered. "Without your hand upon the sword of state, the Empire would be a mere shadow of what it has become. A dark day to consider,: he muttered, hoping to have fed Anochrim's pride.

"Yet, if you feel it wise to appoint a regent, who am I to disagree with a great lord who puts the welfare of his people above his own? If it is your wish that Lady Aesa act as regent, I shall assist her in anyway possible. The Lady would benefit from the counsel of a veteran of court and I believe the Lady Helvania is an excellent choice," he uttered as he looked to the woman, signaling her that his support would come at a price.

"Yet, the customs and protocols of Trothgard stand in stark contrast to our own. Even were Lady Helvania to spend every waking moment with Lady Aesa, it would take time to acclimate your Regent. That would not be fair to Lady Helvania. She has her own life to lead after all." He cast a gaze her way to signal that the price was about to be named.

"I think some lady well versed in protocol and court etiquette should assist Lady Helvania in being a resource to Her Majesty ... someone whose very office is to serve. There is such a lady in my Office of Protocol. I think it critical that I make her always available to Lady Aesa, and Lady Helvania, to ensure there is no breach of protocol. She can even act as a lady in waiting to help Her Highness with errands and other matters as well."

"I fear that two strong and capable ladies such as your betrothed and Lady Helvania, would never wish to ask for assistance, therefore, it falls to you, My Caesar, to spare them from asking ... by making it known that it is your wish to make it so."

Isabella, my love, the world is nearer to our grasp.

As Andolin made his reply to the Caesar, Lady Aesa and Lady Hamilton stood at Anochrim’s bedside almost like a pair of bookends, remaining entirely still and displaying equally unreadable expressions. Anochrim, however, puffed up visibly at the Master of Protocol’s flattery and nodded his general agreement, despite his returning discomfort. He seemed particularly pleased at Andolin’s depiction of him as ‘a great lord who puts the welfare of his people above his own.’ It was, after all, the way he preferred to see himself, as well as the way he wanted others to see him.

Lady Hamilton moved barely an eyebrow at Andolin’s endorsement of her and she met his gaze steadily. She undoubtedly took his meaning, though she gave no real indication of it, but continued to appear impassive even at the man’s declared price. It was a shrewd move, to be appreciated by one who was a connoisseur of the Game.

Anochrim’s nodding seemed to gain momentum as Andolin spoke, and then he replied, sounding quite pleased, “Excellent, my friend. I knew you would have wise council for me.” Then, as if that had taken all his strength to declare, the Caesar sunk back into his pillows. He rubbed his eyes with the heals of his palms for a couple of flickers, before carrying on.

“Alright! It is my wish and I so order that Lady Aesa shall be Regent in the event that I am rendered unable to rule…” Anochrim paused in thought for a flicker, and then said, “As determined by Lady Rioja, and that Lady Hamilton and…” Again the Caesar paused. “And such a lady as appointed by my Master of Protocol shall assist her.”

Women! He was preparing to turn over the empire, his empire, into the hands of women. Anochrim sighed heavily. Well, he would just have to see to it that it never became necessary.

“Will that suffice, my friend?” he asked Andolin in a pained and weary voice. “Or can you put it into sufficiently flowery language for me?” the beleaguered Caesar asked with a waving of one hand, as if to show his frustration with the formal language of law.

"It is sufficient your Majesty. I shall draw up the necessary papers and bring them back for your signature," he pledged while hiding the inward smile of satisfaction. "I shall withdraw at once and return with the paperwork," he announced as he scanned the other faces present to see if there was any disagreement.

It probably wasn't the order Helvania was looking for but Adrian nodded at the Caesar's proposal. He looked to Helvania, wondering if their original purpose for the audience would still be a good thing to talk about after this spell... some of them needed to be spoken of, but at the same time, the Caesar needed rest.

Anochrim nodded his assent to his Master of Protocol, frowning but appearing somewhat more relaxed. Aesa stood at his bedside looking from one to the next, as if wondering what on Tazlure things were coming to, but Anochrim seemed oblivious to her at the flicker and she offered no comment.

Lady Hamilton looked to Andolin, as if to acknowledge his victory, although her cool eyes suggested that it was a small one. The truth of that would, of course, remain to be seen, but the experienced courtier did not appear worried.

“Good,” the Caesar mumbled. “Then perhaps tomorrow we can have a day of peace and quiet? Only deal with emergencies?” he enquired plaintively, pulling the covers up as if he were about to hide beneath them.

“Rest would be wise, my Lord Caesar,” came Rioja’s soothing yet authoritative voice from behind them. It was a certain signal to them all that their audience must soon end.

Andolin was ready for it to end. He had an Imperial decree to draft. Excellent. "I shall take my leave at once and return with the decree, to be signed by his Highness." There was no time to lose as Anochrim did not seem to be getting any better.

"With your permission milord Caesar, I shall withdraw." He bowed to the bedridden Caesar and then bowed to Ladies Aesa, Rioja and Helvania. A quick nod to Adrian and he was heading towards the door.

In Adrian's eyes, the playing field was even. Helvania could help Aesa, but whomever would be Andolin's lady would most certainly be his canary... still, Helvania had the momentum and Rioja, as far as he knew, was a neutral party. Getting the nod from Andolin, he was uncertain how to take it and remained stoic.

"Chin up, Your Excellency... Lady Rioja has the finest at her disposal in getting your health in order, and if there is anything I can help investigate, I will do what I can. Perhaps get a priest to pray over the situation?"

Hey, if Rioja couldn't figure it out right now, maybe divine intervention would be the way to aid the ailing Caesar! Of course, Adrian didn't have to go into details on how bad the Caesar's condition is, but most were worried about the Caesar passing out, and the word was out that he wasn't at 100% anyway...

Just as Andolin departed the bedchamber and strode into the sitting room, Ulder entered the sitting room from the far side. A warm fire still burned in the large fireplace, and the chairs and glasses still bore evidence to the more pleasant note on which the Eveningtide began. Yet the odour of cleaning solution now dominated this chamber, indicating that an unpleasant mess of some sort had just been cleaned up. The bed chamber, beyond Andolin was more brightly lit, casting light through the door behind the Master of Protocol, setting his face a little in the shadows.

As Andolin left the bedroom of the Caesar, he noted Ulder was entering the suite. "Lieutenant Ulder, so good to see you," he uttered. "I was just with His Majesty. Is all well then?" He was curious to see wheter the soldier had anything of interest to say before taking his leave cmpletely.

As he walked inside, Ulder was immediately greeted with the esteemed countenance of the Master of Protocol. It was far from surprising to find Lord Azarin here. This was the pond that this manner of fish swam, and felt at home in the most.

Ulder ignored Andolin's incorrect use of his rank. When last they spoke, he had not been promoted yet, and Ulder was simply too pragmatic to correct the Master of Protocol. He saw such behavior as "tooting his own horn" as it was, and it was not in his nature to do so. Again, he was not surprised, Lord Andolin was far too busy to keep up with the promotions and movements within the Guard's ranks.

"Good day to you sir. I was just informed that the Caesar has been ill since his appearance in the tourney, and I came to see if there were any special security arrangements that needed to be made."

I was also under the impression that the Lady Hamilton and her escort are within. There is a personal matter with her escort that I wish to attend to."

There was no use hiding what the man might learn in the next burn. In a low voice, Andolin confided, "His Majesty is quite ill, ever since the last time I saw him ... before the Tourney. We must keep word of this illness secret for it might cause panic. Thus, I would recommend sealing this area from all but the most initimate acquaintances of Caesar. In the meantime, I go to draw up papers and will return for his signature soon. Caesar has given me clear instructions. As for the Lady Helvania, she is within."

A troubled expression grew on Ulder's face as the Master of Protocol informed him of the recent events. The Caesar's health was a major concern to matters of safety and security, both on the island and everywhere the Empire touched. Lord Azarin was correct. This information did indeed need to be guarded carefully and only made known if necessary and at the correct time.

He wondered at that point if Elaine might be able to help. She had a mystical connection with the Mother, and she might be able to somehow tap into the regrowth and vitality that the Mother brought.

He took Lord Azarin's opinion on matters of security very seriously and would weigh it heavily when the time came, but until he spoke directly with those inside, he would reserve judgement and action.

Thank you good sir, I shall not keep you from your appointed duties. Fare well."

Ulder then stepped further into the chambers, looking around discreetly and politely until he was hailed.

From the sitting room where Ulder now stood, he could see into the Caesar’s bedchamber. A small figure in dark clothing, with long silvery white hair, stood near the door with her back toward Ulder. Beyond, Ulder could see a purple and blue clad man and two women in pale dresses near the Caesar’s bedside. The occupant of the bed was obscured by the bed curtains. The Captain could not be certain if there was anyone else within.

Meanwhile, Anochrim nodded in acknowledgement of Adrian’s words, but it was Helvania that spoke. “Lady Rioja is a Priestess as well as a Mage and Healer. But I’m certain she’ll agree that more is better is such instances.” Helvania flashed her Rose an affectionate smile, clearly pleased with how he was managing in this strange situation.

“Of course,” Lady Rioja responded quietly, before stepping aside and turning to regard Ulder through the doorway. The lady was most certainly Adhiel, and yet she was somehow different; a difference that went beyond the tattoos that decorated her face. The mystic nodded in acknowledgement of the Captain’s presence, but said nothing.

"Sure thing, then, Your Excellency!" Adrian replied with a smile. "Shall I send a petition of prayer to each of the temples, or just one? It will take me a bit to write them just right and leave a small offering... I may be a Panite, but I respect the fact that this city has all sorts of gods. Besides, there are many aspects of this situation that are not directly in Pans element. I may need the help of a Caligraphy expert to make it all formal. I think even the gods would have trouble reading my chicken scratch."

He was a follower of joy, and a joke was good medicine at times like this. With the arrival of Ulder, he turned around, not expecting the noble guardsman and also nodded to him as he entered.

Ulder regarded the various Lords and Ladies carefully. He had been reading various reports and was still acquainting faces and names, but these were people that were known to him, despite the lack of a formal introduction to some. He clasped his hands behind his back and walked slowly and quietly into the bedchamber.

His eyes travelled to each in turn, lingering on the veiled figure within the bed and returning their silent acknowledgements.

"Forgive my intrusion, but I just heard about the Caesar's condition and thought it would be best to step in and see if there were any special security arrangements that were needed or if I could be of any assistance."

He kept his voice low and soft, not wanting to cause a commotion or disturbance loud enough to wake those who may be resting.
