Riding with the Rafao -- Jadmai

Post by Ashari »

"Now! Please.. all of you return to your homes. Sleep well and be prosperous." The Rafao snapped the reign which was attached to the horses and the animals started walking. Nadia stepped off the chariot and out of the way of the chained traitor. Ionis passed through the dispersing crowd much slower this time until he reached where the most of the heroes were located. "Jadmai. Join me." He waited for the dark adhiel to come to the chariot and board with him before encouraging the horses forward again.

For a few burns Ionis didn't say anothing, but once they were out of the crowds and heading back toward the palace he cleared his throat. Only the sound of the clip-clop of hooves could be heard echoing through the empty streets at this mark until his voice cut through. "You were fighting a rightous cause for myself and my people, even after we betrayed you and killed yours." He paused. "You deserve respect and admiration for that." It was a solemn thing to say, and coming from a king, not one often said.

"I would like to honor you in some way, but to start, please when we return to the palace chose anything you'd like and it is yours. Just name it." Ionis nodded. "I insist. And if there is anything else I can do for you, such as returning you to your home.. or anything, don't hesitate asking." The Rafao looked even more haggard and tired than he had when he returned from the battlefield, but he still offered a smile as they reached the golden path and he stepped down from the chariot to where his remainig five bodyguards stood.

They greeted both him and his guest. It didn't take long to reach the impressive door into the palace where Ionis turned to Jadmai. "So, would you like to go to the treasury?" He looked around at the large foyer and inwardly hoped the dark adhiel wouldn't request something too difficult to talk his treasurer into giving up.

Jadmai touched his lips checking the condition of it, before he got into the wagon, and gave a stern look towards the small person.

He sat mostly in silence on the trip back listening to the Rafao. He stared forward, inwardly shaking his head.

I didn't take a side, except for my own.

Right before carriage would stop, Jadmai finally spoke, "Something bothering, Rafao?" He said without turning his head.

Then when Jadmai heard that final destination was the treasury, he quirked an eyebrow, "I do not suppose it would hurt." He said in agreeance.

I hope this is not a 'treasury' with shackles and chains.

"Jadmai, would you prefer we speak in adhiel?" The Rafao asked in Jad's native tongue. "I'm sorry, I hadn't thought of it before." He motioned with his hand down the main hallway of the Palace with the dark adhiel had yet to be able to go down. "My heritage is heavily of Kislovan, and I speak to many adhiel thanks to my postion. Though, as I'm sure you noticed, almost the entirety of my sovereignty are humans." He said as they walked onward. After a few burns they reached a doorway that appeared locked. The Rafao took off his signet ring and placed it where the keyhole would be, turned it, and the heavy stone door slid aside gracefully with just the gentlest sound of chains moving.

Once inside Ionis tapped on something and the door glided back into it's position. A few steps went downward onto a platform where it turned hard to the left. The Rafao stopped at this platform and placed his signet in the third sun along the mosaic tile work and another sliding door became visible as it moved out of the way. "As for what you asked." He continued now that they were truely alone. The second door slid shut behind them and they continued down a hallway. "About whether or not something was bothering me. The answer is most definately: Yes." He looked over at Jadmai. "I was nearly assassinated, by my own guardsman, and that troubles me." He stopped for a flicker and leaned against the wall. "For, honestly, I'd consider myself able-bodied to defend myself against you were you to attack me, however, a shady mind-poisoning as was done upon me, well.. there is little defence to that around one you are supposed to trust."

He started walking again, and then the hallway opened up into a vast room. Lifting a torch from the hallway the Rafao lit it against a dark sconce. A chain reaction was started as down the room each sconce was lit as were chandeliers overhead to illuminate the place.

Huge columns with elaborate tilework upon them held up a vaulted ceiling. The entire room, about sixty feet in width (along the wall they entered) by ninety feet in legth, was filled with tables, and the tables were ladened with gold, jewels, and coins. Amazingly intricate platemail made for special occasions sat aside ornamented masked. Larger than life statutes made of bronze of many of the previous Rafao's lined the room as well as other historic Amunic figures.

"If you don't find something you like here, then I'm sure you will in the rest of the palace. The art work and sculptures are traded out constantly. Always something different in the foyer and in the dining rooms." He didn't seem all to impressed with his own belongings.

Jadmai stopped and stared at a rather large sculpture of a Rafao, and rolled his eyes up to look at it.

Now what in the Gods given lands would I do with a gaint sculpture of a man whom I have no knowledge of...or find particular stunning. I could put things in it I suppose.

Jadmai rested his hand at the base of one of large statues, his back to ruler.

"That's not how I would assassinate you--" He said then walked along the tables, he too now spoke in his native tounge, he could be more articulate and would need to be. "--to be perfectly honest."

He walked along idly looking at the possessions, sure if he had a bag, he would begin stuffing it and could start a life most likely, in fact it was hard not to--but he had been staying in this palace for a few days, and he didn't see it ending soon, he was still a 'guest' of sorts--it had very slightly numbed him from this, or at least, steady his urge to take everything and run.

"If there was say, thirty men--random, unknow to eachother only knowing the time, during a public appearance with enough to gain from your demise, that would be ideal. Come in with enough numbers surprise a personal escort of the same number--short swords, and daggers. The majority fodder for the guards, as two or three get in to strike the blows." Jadmai ran his fingers across a few gems, "Archers, would be nice too, if not to help strike the fatal blow, but to cause the confusion needed."

"Poision--it's more personal. A few links away and you will find your so-called mastermind, if it's not the fool himself--but like I said personal--if it was a political attempt, than it gives strength to no others that might otherwise be stirred to rebel against you. A public attack would let known that you were able to be reached, stir up some fanatics give them some false courage. Poisioning...an ill-tempered slave could muster up the bravado and intellect for that."

The dark adhiel looked up to the rulers chest, as it became habit not to look up at this place.

"I am sorry my prestigous, friend, if I may call so, I am just being honest, but I am sure you have advisors on this, that have already filled your ears with this a dozen times. One just cannot be a ruler, the Rafao, without enemies."

Jadmai sighed, it may have sounded like it was because of the situation with Ionis' assassination attempt, but it was with picking from the goods.

"The champion of Amun Rah, the leader of powerful nation, offers me his coffers, and I feel like a child celebrating his tenth yahren, but I cannot get myself to take anything." He stood still keeping his gaze where it was and placed his hands behind his back. "As a ruler I know you must have to deal with debt...but as a person, I know you would understand the feeling or even virture of not wanting to be in someone's debt."

Jadmai looked up, and let his eyes take in the stabbing feeling of light, to look Ionis in the eyes, he owed him this much if he was going to ask for anything.

"Still, I was robbed of my blades during the melee. I cannot say the offer of a vauled dagger, doesn't pique my interest. I do not to be greedy, but one of those does interest me. Overall, I owned four daggers and two stilettos. I do not want them all of great quality, one would be most wonderous--the others could be plain as found on a market, but knowing they were given by you, and saying that they were a gift from you would be an worth more than any coin could give a vaule."

"I also must admit I will offer an service I can in return, I have a feeling you kept around for more than company, since is the first we have spoke. I have my own notions on how to help, but it require investment, I am interested in what you have to say first."

It was clear Jadmai had forgotten himself, "If I may venture to ask of course."

"I most definately understand debt, Jadmai. That is why you are here. You fought on my behalf with no reason to. You are not from here, I know you owe no allegiance to me, and you assisted in keeping my citizens safe. So, you see, you are only evening a debt I feel I owe you. We will be even following this." The leader leaned against one of the tables ladened with goods.

"You were robbed during the fighting?" Ionis shook his head. "By one of my city guardsman? What is this city coming to?" He sighed and crossed his lithe arms infront of his chest. The tight muscles shifted beneath his skin.

"If all you require are some blades, then I will have my personal smithy prepare them for you. You say four daggars and two stillettos? They can be ready for you as soon as tomorrow.. I'd say tomorrow late afternoon or early evening. Will that due?" His ebony eyes looked at Jadmai with sincerity in his diplomatic dispodition. He was treating the dark adhiel as he would an important figure who needed to be pleased.

The Rafao gave a somewhat pleased smile as Jadmai asked what reason he had kept him around for, assuming it was more than just a passing interest. "There are several reasons, honestly. The first of which is I wanted to make sure you weren't about to do something like go back to your home and say that the Rafao's army slaughtered your people. The last thing I need is an adhiel attack force coming to my desert kingdom directly after I've righted everything."

"Aside from that, you showed yourself a brave soul in stepping forth to come with me back to Amun Rah. You were the only one brave enough to do so." He shrugged. "I suppose that intrigued me about what sort of man you must be." Clearing his throat and smiling he continued. "And after hearing what you have said about how you would assassinate me, I'm glad I chose to keep you under a close eye."

"Especially considering what happened to the diplomat earlier." Ionis looked at Jadmai but didn't say anything further.

Jadmai listened to Ionis and shook his head slightly, "I cannot say for certain if it was a city guard or not, in fact I don't even know who the first person was who attacked me...it just started very fast. I was told to disarm by one of your guards--which I did--and never saw the blades again--had them for a long time too." He shrugged a little. "Oh, but, Ionis, don't burden yourself with quickly replacing them. I've had enough of nearly using them tonight to last me awhile, but I will accept the offer of replacements greatfully."

The dark adhiel listened to professed reasons for being allowed to stay within the palace, reasons he understood, and had already surmised, but had a hard time believing that those were the only ones--even if they were, "I know...I know the group of us, where on someone else's land the second day we arrived. I expected something like what transpired, I would not have gone back to Gulanadur saying there was no proper precedent for the attack."

Jadmai thought back for a moment to that day, and his mental and physical exhaustion almost would not let him do it, "And I was not brave, I just had no fear..." The dark adhiel swallowed slightly. "...After what happened, it's hard to be afriad."

Jadmai seemed to be lost in his own thoughts, but a few words from Ionis about assassination completely turned Jadmai's grim thoughts around and made him give an honest laugh, "You sound like you take my ideas seriously. Being a dark adhiel one often gets branded with being an assassin, it's become annoying in the past...mmm...fifty yahren. However, with people constantly talking about it, and in Gulanadur assassinations always a big topic amongst the gossip, I just thought I would offer my view, sorry if that is unnerving--maybe there is just a lot of assassins in Gulanadur and it's not just a stigma." Jadmai slowed for a moment and thought about the diplomat, he thought he would hear a question about that, "Yes, I have heard about that. I believe I was with Jun and we returning from when my little chaperoned visit to the town when the palace became a buzz with it, it brought that night to an end--well after I accompained Jun to question some prisoners."

"He was a fine chaperone, we had talks of my home and my new home here. However, while I am here, I sometimes feel like I have to be on my best behaviour. I feel like I am representing an entire race, and also I know that if something goes wrong, most will look towards the dark face first."

Jadmai looked at one of vaulbles, perhaps a necklace, and nodded, "I know I don't have an allegiance to you, but to ease the tension around me, show my gratefulness for my treatment, and the fondness I have for your land, I would like to give you my allegiance...for what it's worth. I would think that one traits needed for someone like you is knowing how best to utilize someone. I can't say that I would be much of a city guard or something like that, but if I can be of use, you my mind and body to act as your own."

Jadmai sighed, he had never offered himself like that before, but he was being honest, and in this culture offering oneself like this seemed proper. He lifted his eyes to meet Ionis' own eyes, though on his face could be seen pain from the act, but he did so so that because the offer deserved such a gesture.

Jadmai looked back at the table and smiled, "Hey, I like this too." He said pointing at the object he was playing with earlier. "But I'd rather not take something personal from your treasury. It would deprive Amun Rah of something, and won't be of much use to me. I would rather settle for it's worth, or it's worth too much, a reasonable part of it. The coin I will end up putting back into the pockets of citizens of Amun Rah anyways. For example if I buy clothes with part of the it etc., it will help stimulate the local economy." He said with a smile.

"I don't know much about treasures. It could be worth five or fifty crowns, and I wouldn't know the difference. I've never had much money so it's all king's randsom to me."

He chuckled as he finished, he couldn't resist it. He had been poor his entire life, a pittance from this man could probably make him wealthy, and honestly, he could not resist picking out something that might be worth 40 acres and a mule or more. Yes, he chuckled outwardly, but if he wasn't restraining himself, he would probably be dancing up and down the room, singing, "I'm a rich Dark Adhiel can't you see, got enough crowns to buy Kings Court and Brie. Got enough money to make the Queen O' Gul pant, if I sat on my riches I'd be taller than a giant. Got enough money to support a proper lass--No! That's crazy, just buy a nice brothel and be surrounded by ass!!!"

Jadmai had a big smirk, "Hehe--" Oops, laughing out loud...quick cover it up. "Oh, sorry, just thought of something funny." Brilliant.

Ahh, I knew I thought of those lyrics for a purpose...hey, I wonder if I can buy Parmina.

"Replacements it will be, and if nothing else you'll have a story to tell anyone else who sees them." He smirked leaving the insinuation hanging in the air. As it was, in the short time since he met Jadmai in the desert he had known the dark adhiel to be in two battles. That was more than many seasoned soldiers would have the honor in fighting in the span of months, nevermind in days.

"No, I actually find your insight appreciated. The only other dark adhiel I know on any personal level is a king, so I hardly think of your kind as being assassins, though I'm sure he has done quite a few killings, nevermind the slayings done at his word." Ionis shrugged. "Then again, I always believed that gossip had some truth in it somewhere." He smiled a bit, but allowed Jadmai his moment of thought, noting that he seemed pulled inwardly at the mention of the diplomat.

"You'd like to stimulate our local economy, eh?" He gave Jadmai an interested look, as if judging something about him. In actuality he was trying to figure out what the man before him did before Amun Rah. He had to have some training with weapons to fight, then he knows about plotting and planning and poisonings as well as economics. All in all, the Rafao found him incredibly intriguing and interesting, and for royalty that was quite a new experience.

"The issue with the diplomat is under investigation at the moment. I'm trying to assure that there is no murderer among my staff, as well as insure that none of my other guests will be in danger. There is a question that it might've been one of the slaves." He sighed. "Which saddens me to a great deal, for I treat them all very well. If they want to know true slavery they should go to Trothguard." He gave another quick sigh outward from his nose.

"Jun is a good warrior, on a path to an excellent carreer within the army. I am sorry about the case that you had to witness, that was a part of the scheme, I fear it spreads much beyond Abu`Sahir, there is a girl, as well as the young man that would've been sentenced to death, they are somehow involved." He shook his head. "I'm not yet sure what was planned, that is the most aggrivating part of all of this. I will have to bring the both of them in for questioning. Perhaps you'd be interested in sitting in on that?"

The achadhiel looked at the item that the dark adhiel had been playing with. He considered for a moment, looked up as if searching a mental data base, and then said: "Ten crown?" One of his brows raised a bit with the questioning intonation. "I'd say about ten crown, yes." He moved away from the table he had been leaning on and walked with well trained posture but turned as he heard Jadmai laughing. "Something funny? I hope not the price I mentioned, I had come to believe that ten crown was a good deal of money. Am I mistaken?"

"I know the two you speak of--I was there when Jun questioned them before, and of course they were there in the streets during the melee. Honestly, I made my way towards them, because I had figured they had started this, and must have had some sort of escapte route planned if they were the ones behind it."

"It was obviously planned. I am sure you know that by intution, but I was there, and I have seen riots in the Gulanadur in similar places. And riots do not seem to spring into action directly after the tone of a bell, marking a mark. It was coordinately--and not only that it was feint. They wanted to draw troops away towards where they were in order for some woman named...Nadia to go about doing something with less guards around, as ot what she was doing...I have no idea. Like I said, I followed them because I figured they would know a new way out. And I would be glad to go question them, but perhaps it's not best to let me them know my position in all this. Maybe question me as well."

Jadmai lauged as he asked about the worth of the necklace, "10 crowns? It is enough crowns to buy...two scouts--the horses from Kilosovan."

"They were indeed drawing the troops attention, and that of my bodyguard, Am-Heh. He is the head of the military defense unit, and with him being executed there will be some changed in the chain of command." Ionis shook his head. "These are trying times, my friend."

For a moment he looked just a man, a man faced with a terrible problem. However, his problem was just just his own, as he had his people to consider, and they were a heavy burden to carry on just one man's shoulders. To have one of the few who were trusted with the safety of his followers turn out to be deceitful, well, it was a difficult thing indeed. Most of all, he worried that the commoners would lose faith in their government. The last thing he needed was a real riot on his hands.

"Nadia was assisting me, by taking Am-Heh out," he said. "And if they were working with Nadia, then I suppose I cannot blame them for the entirety of tonight's problem. These deaths shall fall on Am-Heh's head, as well as my own."

"Two horses?" He looked skeptical. "Then that is not nearly enough, make it twenty crown and we will call ourselves even." He smiled and motioned toward the way they had come. "Please, let us leave this place, it's much too much like a museum and lacking in the pleasantries of my private rooms.

It didn't take long to ascend the stairs and go back through the hall. It was much simpler to get out of the chamber than to get in. Once they reached the final door, Ionis turned to Jadmai. "Would you prefer to retire to your own suite, or would you care to take a meal with me? I have more questions about the couple, but they can wait until morning if you'd rather."

Jadmai gave a big smile, "Yes, a crown isn't what it supposed to be anymore I guess. But, yes, twenty repays all debts and is very generous of you, I cannot show my gratitude, Ionis."

Jadmai followed Ionis out, trying to keep his eyes of the jewels and goods, and walked behind, he was thinking that he fast enough hands to pocket something small, but that life was behind him now.

And what life do I have now?

Jadmai listened to Ionis offer an inivitation, "Oh, my friend," he said holding both of his behind his back, "the daylight doesn't treat me so well. I admit I am getting a little more used to it, however, I would be much more comfortable, and if it suits you to sup now, and I also very anxious to discuss these people."

"Let us take to my chambers then, and enjoy some food and wine." He grinned and started walking. A guardsman walked past them wearing a red tunic. He saluted Ionis and the leader acknowledged him with a quick nod as they walked.

Other than that there were few people in the hallways of the palace. It was after gravetide and most everyone had crawled into bed by this mark and long ago fell asleep. "I'm afraid I know little of the cuisine of Gulanadur where you hail," he said. "Many people believe that Amunic dinners are spicy, but in reality, they rarely are. We use many aromatic spices, but most are mellow and I consider them to be on the sweet side."

They ascended a set of stairs and followed a main hallway until they reached a wide door shrouded in silken curtains. Two guardsman stood outside the door and stood at attention as their leader approached. One looked at Jadmai with scrutiny. "Sir?" He asked to the Rafao. The two of them looked very much alike with high-bridged noses, but the one who spoke had a bit of a rounded bump upon it as well.

"Do not question my judgement." He said simply and then continued into his opulent chamber with a flurry of curtains flaring out around him leaving Jad to follow or be left in the company of the two body-guards. "Get someone to start food, for two." He called out the command to a female servant in the room who scurried past Jad with a whoosh of fresh air from his cooled quarters. "Come on in, Jadmai."

It was a good thing that Jadmai was behind Ionis as they walked, as he was jumping up and down spinning in the air.

TWENTY CROWNS! TWENTY FREAKIN' CROWNS!!! I COULD BUY...well, I don't know what I could buy with that...

Jadmai stopped dancing in the hallway, and shot back looks at the people that were undoubtedly looking at him. Looks that seem to say, 'What would you do if you were given twenty crowns?'

As he approached the Rafao's chambers he almost bumped into the man, as the guard stopped him over Jadmai's presence--The ever menacing shorter than most grown women unarmed--dark elf.

As the lead quickly chastised the guard, Jadmai was just going to walk by, but he was in just one of his quirky moods and had to test the ire of the guard.

"Question the Rafao's judgement a lot, huh? Mmmmmaybe you think you are a little wiser than him? That or you think I'm sooooo sneaky, that I could just walk right up behind him and do whatever you think we do. Offending one of the Rafao's guests about to enter his chambers." Jadmai leaned in close. "Could you imagine what would happen to you if that was anyone else but me?" Jadmai stepped back. "But this time, I will let it pass--JUST THIS TIME."

Jadmai made a gesture from his eyes to the guards to show that he was keeping on an eye on him.

Then he looked at the other guard, "And you...good job, solider." As he walked by he would give that solider a swift smack in the bottom.

Inside of the chambers, Jadmai watched his footing and while looking down said, "Truth be told, I don't know that much about Gulanadur cooking either, I never really had to do it. I know whatever you cook...it probably should not turn black, but that is really it."

The guard frowned at Jadmai's little speech. He was hardly impressed or shocked. He had dealt with the short ones who thought they needed to make up for their size with some kind of quick wit, as if it somehow balances out the weakness. He considered men of lower height to be lacking in masculinity.

So, his scowl stayed in place as the dark adhiel started to move aside. He decided to stay stoic and not say anything to further incite a provocation from the pointy eared outsider. His grimace deeped as Jadmai passed by, but he couldn't help but turn to look as he spoke to the other guard and complimented him. That irritated him more than it ought to considering he had been trained. As he slapped his comrade on the ass, however, he had to do his best by biting his lip to not laugh aloud at him.

The other guard nodded to Jadmai's praise, but his entire body stiffened as he passed and smacked his behind. He turned to say something, but the guest of the Rafao was already in the room, and it was too late. "Ionis should careful of that one..." The first guard said.

"He knows what he's doing." The second replied, but then their conversation faded into the background.

"Well," Ionis started. "I hope you enjoy our cuisine." He motioned over to a sumptuous sofa with a table infront of it. "Sit, have some wine with me before we eat." He took the seat quickly and a woman poured them each a glass. "From Kislovan." He took a sip and then set the glass down again. It clinked on the marble surface. "You have a quick mouth. That can be dangerous."

Jadmai sat with Ionis and slowly lifted the cup to his lips as he listened to the Rafao, when he mentioned his mouth he had to smile.

"That...that is something I do for my own entertainment, simple jesting. All our ilk isn't always so stern. But you are correct, I have a with words, and usually I don't get to use them in the most flattering fashion. I think I have a clever tounge, but I have never gotten to try my tounge at any thing worthy."

Jadmai sat for a moment staring into his wine, Aaaaactually, I believe I have tried my tounge at something worthy.

"It's alright, I don't mind it in the least, infact, it's rather humorous." As he sat back against the arm of the sofa and looked at the dark adhiel, it seemed as if his color was coming back. The wine was helping invigorate the leader, and he appeared a bit less tired than he was when Jadmai first saw him earlier that night. "Flattery is over-rated, my friend. Often too many of my guests are busy trying to impress me rather than just speaking with me. I suppose it is too much to ask to be treated like any other person, since that is indeed not the case, but still, occassionally it's good to be just spoken to, rather than complimented and praised." He leaned over and picked up his glass to take another sip.

"My Lord, and His Honored Guest, something to start with until your meal is ready?" A young woman who looked like every other Amunic woman that Jadmai had seen carried at tray upon which were two bowls with greens and rice and a few bottles filled with oils. The Rafao nodded and she set it down upon the table and then left them.

Grasping one of the bottles Ionis drizzled the golden liquid over the small bowl's contents before setting it down and doing the same with the reddish hued substance which he in turn put back. He left the one with dark brown oil. Already the cooked rice had begun cooking the greens that it was with, and Ionis began stirring the ingredients together. He took a few quick bites. It was hot, very hot, and he swallowed before he got a chance to finish chewing. Coughing a bit he washed down the remnants with a swig of the wine. "Ionis, chew, then swallow.. then breath." He grinned, then took another spoonful of the medly.

"I'll make sure you recieve your payment tomorrow morning, if that is alright, as well as your blades." He took another few bites before continuing their discussion. "So, the pair, the woman and the young man, who were in the riot, you were there for their questioning. What is their relationship akin to? Is he protecting her out of money, or is there something other than that involved?"

Jadmai just looked at his food, as he listened to Ionis talk, he played with his food for a bit, as he took what the ruler was saying.

"Yes, Ionis, but no one treat you like a normal person, not unless perhaps you go to a foriegn land. Everyone you meet is going to want something for you: rights for trade, military support, and on he the lesser extent weekly pay You have all the power, now perhaps not everyone wants all that power or some of it, but the commners they live of it."

Jadmai let some wine roll around in his mouth, and swallowed, "Besides, the path in which your life has taken you must have a higher standard of respect. If you were to try to be a looser, people may forget who they are dealing with, wouldn't want that happening to the guards." Jadmai finished with a wink.

Jadmai snapped his gaze over to Ionis as choked a little, and looked closely at the serving staff as they chidied him a little.

"Don't die Ionis, not with me in your company, they will have my head chopped off before you even take you last breath."

He listened to the question afterwards, and gave it some thought, "See, you can't be a normal person, they don't have these concerns." Jadmai smired. "On the suface, the man Rashak? has an...interest...in the girl. A little deeper, this girl says she is a princess--I caught that part from an interragation. From what little I gathered--they are not big supporters of you."

The dark elf shrugged his soliders, "There was plenty of tension there, plenty before the 'riot' began. I am sure you know that was no riot, I lived on a bizzare, and I've seen a riot began at the exact start of a mark. When it was time to escape this madness, the woman resisted saying someone hadn't had enough time to do what they were supposed to yet...they were obviously drawing the soliders from their positions."

"Or may it was a riot that happened to start at the sound of a mark?" Jadmai said with a tone that told Ionis that he didn't have that much information.

"I may want want to be treated like a truely ordinary person, that just isn't possible." Coming from anyone other than a chosen of the Gods it might've been an egocentric statement, but for the Rafao, it was completely true. "Because there is nothing about me that is ordinary. I've never lived a life like that. I've always been here in the palace. I wouldn't know any other life, certainly not like the one you've lived." He meant of the bazaar and of living in Gulanadur specifically, but there was so much more that Ionis could never understand of the dark adhiel's life, of what he had lived through.

"Don't worry, Jadmai, I don't plan on dying any time soon. I've had a close enough call for the night, I should make it atleast until morning." He continued eating, but listened intently to Jadmai's words. There was much to think on, about, through. He wasn't sure he liked that. "A princess?" His gaze focused and he thought on it. "Ah.. that's where I've seen here then, she's from the Nine." He shook his head. "My my, she's grown up a good bit since I saw her last." Ionis whistled and considered. "She shouldn't be here, she should be in her village, that is very odd."

"I imagine she isn't one of my biggest fans. I've been trying to talk her father into allowing me to rule their land for my entire reign, as has each Rafao before me. They are a difficult people, though." He shook his head. "I guess that answers a bit of a question about who she is, but raises more of why she's here."

"I should send guards out in the morning to collect them, both. The young man with her has been given a death sentence, though not to be carried out, it's still hanging over his head until I pardon him." He thought on that for a moment. "And I should get the princess back home. Lianelle does not belong here, it may cause problems."

"The reason they were drawing the soldiers is that they were supposed to be going to Nashreen this night, heading out to fight against the Nine. That was part of my guard's master plan. He would be the one to 'solidify' the country, be the first to pull in the Nine, but no one wants to do it by force, I won't, that is why they are still a sovereign community." He sighed. "Perhaps they'd be better off under my control, and protection, but they've not had any problems until now." Ionis shrugged. "Much to think on, my friend." He took another sip of his wine. "So what exactly have you been trained in? You're a fighter, who lived on the bazaar in Gulanadur, and quite without your acceptance, have been brought here to Amun Rah. What do you plan to do now? At first I thought you wanted to go back to your homeland.. now, not so much."

Jadmai thought of Gulandur, not joyfully or in regret, he just pondered the place, and the way he lived, "No, Ionis, I was never trained to be a fighter. I have no military experience, but any place where one must come from the dregs of society, they must learn to fend for themselves."

Jadmai slowly drank the wine, not paying attention to how much Ionis, but then suddenly let out a slow chuckle, "Not that I was getting into knife fights every day or anything like. In fact, before my parents lost their shop, I was rather the book warm, and once I went on my own, I barraged the traders with questions of the outside world."

Jadmai paused looking at his distored image in the goblet, "It was only by need that brandished my blades, and still is--unless I need to scare someone off. I think I have reached a level with my blades where any fool knows that as soon as I pull them out I know what to do with them."

"It was really only when my sister disappered that I had to start using them. We both worshiped Anasati, however she became an acolyte, and then vanished, my trek to find her was long, and fruitless. With a few skirmishes along the way--nothing worth regalling you with. My blades have always been there, that is why there are so important to me. In that room treasure you took me too, the first thing I was going to ask for was Parmina...but I thought to large of a price, so I went with next vauled possesion."

"We used to have slaves in Gulanadur, but not like the ones here. Ours were dirt, not vauled personally--worked to death. It's been abolished now, but I don't see Parmina as a servant either, and forgive me for talking about her in glowing terms (this is part of beign treated like ordinary person) but she never seemed indentured to me, just caring...and haven't had that in a long time."

The dark adhiel squinted his eyes as he looked off in the distance, he still had a habit of doing that when above ground, though he could see perfectly fine, of course better than a human, but there in no white light in Gulanadur, and reflections are colors looked so alien here.

He still sat silent as he realized he just opened up a bit much, but deftly changed the subject as his tounge has been known to do.

"Yes, Ionis, for some time I did want to visit Gulanadur--not to go home. I haven't had a home for nearly a hundred yahren, so that was not my desire. You see, Ionis, as you may well know, there is a group in Gulanadur know as the Dark Knights. They are trained in highest forms of combat, and diplomacy, and only elite are selected to train. It's what young Gulanader boys and some girls dream of. And when you enter the training you can declare which noble house or merchant house you want to train for, or you can just do the training--but after the last few days here, and you taking me as one of your own, I wanted to it, and align myself to Amun Rah, to you--but I realize that I don't need to do that training to do that."

Jadmai dropped his empty goblet on the ground, his hands a bit sweaty at what he was about to say, he causally picked it up and grinned at Ionis.

"What I really want to do, you ask? I want to work for you. I know you have a whole nation at your disposal, and what good would an obvious black face do, but I would be honoured to--not as a leader of a great country, but as ordinary person who has treated me well--housed me, clothed me. I feel a debt, but that is still not why. Honestly, Ionis, if you were an ordinary man, people would still flock to your leadership."

Jadmai nodded to himself and continued, "Do you think sending the guards after the princess and her protector is the best thing, I did help them escape, but only because I knew they had started the whole riot, so they must have had a planned way out--everyone would have wanted a stab at me. I think they trust me, I saved the man's life. I am more than just a fighter."

Jadmai laughed to himself, "Yes, that is part of being an ordinary person, you get contradicted by your friends, and they are quite honest to you. Like the fact, that you kinda have a big nose." Jadmai said refilling his goblet. Then while taking a drink grinned and spoke into his cup, "Just kidding your nose is fine."

"Many of the best fighters I know were not trained that way, they gained their skills through protecting themselves and their own, and they are usually the best there are, for they aren't limitted to the structure of a learned way of the blade. There is a certain finesse when one has been taught the proper ways, but, usually it is only an added visual layer, rather than much added benefit to your talent." Ionis said and his eyes were deep and thoughtful as he listened to the dark adhiel's words.

He grinned as Jad spoke of being a book worm. "When I was younger I spent more time reading than any one thought possible. It wasn't until I was older, and realized what my responsiblities were going to be, that I stopped. Now I can't even recall the last thing I read which didn't have to do with matters of state." There was a somberness to his voice. "That's the way of it sometimes, though." He shrugged and attempted to look as though it didn't bother him.

"Your sister disappeared?" He thought of his own sister, who was now his wife, and swallowed. Infact, he couldn't imagine his life were she not apart of it. They had been incredibly close in age, which made the marrying that much easier. There were other Rafaos that had been forced to marry a sister half their age. "I'm sorry for your loss of her to you." He shifted and leaned against the side arm of the couch more, so he could look at the adhiel more as he spoke.

"Parmina? My concubine?" Ionis stared for a flicker, his eyes widened a bit, before a smile crept onto his face. "Yes, she is a beauty, but I'm not sure the blades I'll be giving you are worth less than she is." The Rafao turned as Jadmai looked into the distance. When he realized there was nothing that the adhiel was looking at, he turned back around. "She is an amazing creature, from an exotic past," he said. "I have many concubines. But you are right about one thing, she does know how to treat a person with a respect of their own, not based on what they are, but who they are. I believe that is an inert talent of hers, nothing she could've learned."

It was still startling for the Rafao to hear the adhiel as they spoke of living for as long as they did. The thought of being around for more than a hundred yahren, and still being in the same physical stature as the Rafao, who was in his twenties, was barely fathomable. "The closest thing to the Dark Knights we have here would be my six personal body-guards - rather, five now." He frowned at the thought of his traitorous man. He still didn't know what drove the man to make an attempt on his life.

"I believe, Jadmai, that I could indeed easily find a place for you here in Amun Rah, now that you've decided to stay." He nodded, but then listened as Jad spoke of the pair trusting him. "Alright, if you believe that they will trust you, then I will send you, with a small unit of guards, out to find them. I'm sure you understand I cannot send you out on your own." Infact, Ionis could do whatever he liked, including sending the dark adhiel off to gather the couple, if he saw fit. "It will make it easier if they give you trouble. So far, they've been linked to Yabal's and to the Simbahan." He looked down at the food on the table. "Those would be the two places I'd like you to look. If you can bring them back without a struggle, that would be better, but if not, then alas, that is how it will be. That is.. assuming you'd like to go after them."

Ionis laughed as Jadmai poked fun. "This coming from a fellow who's shorter now, after an extra hundred yahren, than most women." He grinned. "I think that it would be time for me to get some sleep now, before the concubines become lonesome. I'll send Parmina to you... I'm sure she'd enjoy the company." He stood from the couch. "Report to the guard barracks at dawn and chose your men. I realize that leaves you little time for sleep, but we'll see what you can do. The sooner the better."

"There is a saying in Gulanadur, about height: It's believed to be first uttered by a great sage, and one is always in their best interests to heed the proverb."

Jadmai drained the last of the wine in his goblet, and looked at Ionis as if gauging if he should divulge this pearl of wisdom on the outsider, finally he leaned forward, and inclined his chin, showing that he decied to share, "For generations, my people have lamented over the curse of our dark skin, each of us paying for a deed our ancestors did, that we had no part in. On top of that, like you so deftly pointed out, we have been given such short stature."

Jadmai paused, and looked longfully into his empty goblet, "Yet, those who are wise say the gods have plans for us all, and that we all must shoulder burdens and be blessed with strenghts."

"I think that is why Dark Adhiel are cursed, but have peckers like donkeys." Jadmai said with several very serious nods.

Pouring himself some more wine he continued on, "Of course, I would honoured to be one our guard, or just take this charge you have set before me. I will find these two once again and befriend them, whatever it is you would like to know, you shall have."

"I hope the guards will be incognito, otherwise, they will not trust me--I think that is obvious. I'm also going to need my blades, if I go unarmed they will suspect just as much."

Jadmai stood up, and didn't bother to wait for Ionis to stand, treating him like he would anyone else he would know, "I think I shall retire too, and don't worry about the sleep--it's not the easiest to come by up here. I shall head back to my own quarters."

Jadmai made his way to the door way and paused for a moment before peeking slightly back over his shoulder, "Like donkeys."

"Rest well, Ionis."

The Rafao drew silent as the dark adhiel spoke. He was so serious, as if he was discussing some matter of grave importance. The leader leaned in close, bridging the gap between them, his dark orbs flicking back and forth between Jadmai's gray eyes. As he offered the bit about shouldering burdens, Ionis nodded sagely. He understood taking a sacrifice for the greater good of things, and knew that Uphuron and Anasis had bigger plans for every person.

Ionis opened his mouth to speak, share some equally appropriat wisdom having to do with the gods reasoning, when what Jadmai said sunk into his mind. Instead, he snorted hard out of his nose. If he had been drinking at the time, he would've sprayed his guest in a fine mist, luckily for them both, he had already set the glass down. A grin pulled at his face, and he finally allowed it to spread handsomly across it. "You bastard, I was sitting here eating it up!" He shook his head laughing. Ionis's hand went to his stomach, as if holding it would make the chuckling stop, it didn't.

It wasn't until he let out a big sigh that he was able to calm himself. "Yes, this task first, and then we can figure out exactly what place you may have among my staff." He smiled, that wasn't about to fade. "The guards will be dressed in street clothes. Use them how you see fit." Ionis rose, pushing himself up off the couch.

He watched as his new, well, he wasn't sure what to call him, started toward the door. The look over the shoulder and the quick quip, started the leader laughing again. "Yes.. you sleep well, too, Jadmai."

The guardsmen were out in the hallway, stoicly staring forward, watching for anything out of the ordinary. Under any other circumstances, a dark adhiel stroling out of the Rafao's private quarters would indeed fall under the category of out of the ordinary. However, tonight, that was not the case. Each of them had the feeling that it wasn't going to be the case for a long time, either.

Beside the guards, there was little other in the way of activity in the desert palace. Jadmai was able to make it back to what had become 'his' room, with no quarrells. A few burns later a knock came to his door. "Master Jamai? The Rafao sent for Parmina to join you this evening, but I'm afraid she is sleeping already, would you like for me to wake her?" It was a young woman, exotic to this locale in the fact that she was blonde haired and blue eyed with fair freckled skin. She wore a wrap dress in a similar fashion to Parmina, however, she just didn't have the same appeal in it, perhaps because she had no roots in the desert unlike the mixed breed concubine.

OOC: Holy lost posts, luvr.

Jadmai made his way outside of the doors and was still laughing a little, he turned to the guards whom he had gave a rough time to as he came in.

"Is Ionis that easy to get to laugh, or does he usually ride you guys rather hard?"

Jadmai was doubtful that he would get the reaction he was looking for: some sort of disdain. He was still sure that the attempt on Ionis' life was not a single act by a single man. Things were still brewing in his mind, and this was only the beginning.

As he headed to his bed, he dismissed the girl, only saying that he would pefer to sleep alone tonight.

He sat cross legged on his bed, and tried to empty his mind. He had heard medieation was good enough as sleep sometimes, and he didn't feel safe enough to sleep.

The guards didn't make a move toward Jadmai this time, and they both kept their mouth's shut. A wise move, as Ionis was listening curiously to how they might react, and he was pleasantly surprised neither of them had said anything.

The meditation was probably the best idea, as in a full slumber he might not have wanted to wake up at the break of dawn. The Rafao was busy bringing up the sun already, and his powers brought the light into the dark desert. A light which didn't touch the room which Jadmai slept in, but instead he was awoken by Jun, who gave a sharp knock before stepping in. "Morning. Ionis said you wished to be woken early, and taken to the Barracks. There is a coach waiting."
