Simple Pleasures [Morning Tide Chyril 26th] (Open)

Post by Deianeira Saitheria »

This modest establishment has recently been renamed and renovated following a change of management in Darkenry 1225 AD. It is situated on a corner not far from Audrey’s Otherwear in the Inner Ring of the Citadel. The main entrance is located on a busy street on the northern side of the building. Another bustling street runs along the eastern wall and on the western side, a narrow gated alley leads south towards the rear entrance.

Topped by a roof of mossy grey slate, the two-story building is constructed in weathered stone and freshly painted wood. Creepers of ivy climb around the windows and in the spring, a veritable rainbow of tea roses bloom from planter boxes along the sheltered front porch, and from the pots dangling from the overhanging balcony. During times of dry weather, chairs and tables can be set onto the porch and balcony for patrons who wish to enjoy their socialising semi-alfresco.

The main doors open into a spacious hall with polished wooden floorboards covered here and there by plush carpets. Bright sunshine floods the room throughout the day, but after the sun has set, the cafe is transformed - puddles of soft lantern light mottle the building, illuminating some regions with their warm yellow glow, rendering others shadowy and intimate by their abscence.

Dominating the southern wall is a raised stage where both professional and amateur acts are frequently invited to perform. In the southwestern corner, a green door leads to an enclosed stairwell which is also accessible via the back entrance of the establishment. The stone fireplace set into the southeastern corner warms the cafe during the cold seasons.

A series of wooden booths padded with red cushions lines the eastern side of the room. On wall next to each booth, square windows alternate with paintings and sketches commissioned by local artists. Chairs, sofas and high and low tables clutter the rest of the floor space; these furnishings are tasteful and elegant, in warm wooden and earthern tones enlivened by the occasional splash of pale lemon yellow.

A counter located to the west side of the entrance encloses a small open kitchen, tiled with terracotta, where hot beverages and sweet snacks are freshly prepared each day. From the beginning of morningtide to the end of eveningtide, the rich aroma of brewing coffee and baked goods fills the shop and wafts forth from any open doors or windows.

Customers are attended to promptly by the staff of the coffee house, who invite you to relax, to make yourself at home and to treat yourself to a few of life’s simple pleasures.

Standing in the door way of Simple Pleasures, before moving off to the side, Deianeira paused looking around a bit, though it was still early morningtide, she felt a bit uneasy. "Jenna?" she called peering behind her and out of the door. She'd left the temple first and figureed that she'd try to get to the shop early to get a good place to sit for them. Finding a booth, Deianeira sits down. Her movements are graceful, though and her dark hair is pulled a little tighter into its ribbon.

"Can I have-" she pauses to think about her voice of drink. "A cup of tea, and any baked goods that are just fresh from the oven, doesn't matter." she speaks warmly. Though as a few moments pass her eyes wander to wards the a stage. "A stage. I should try and see if I can get a performance." she muses aloud. "Born and raised here, and I didn't know there was a stage her in Simple Pleasures." she smiles as her eyes, look toward the stage with a little bit of longing. Who am I kidding,I am not that good. I could not perform in front of so many people.

She leaned back into the booth. Letting herself be alone with her thoughts. I am not afraid, but I feel so... unable to play. She strummed an imaginary instrument. "How am I supposed to do this? Mother kicked me out..." she leaned a little over the table looking down at her darkned hands. Her mother's hand were more delicate, she was adhiel, but Deianeira smiled. Mother could never done some of the things I have-not with those hands. She was raised to high society, what chance do I have of following that path? She inhaled and drank her tea when it came.

Jeanna nearly bumped into Deaineira managing to stop at the last moment, entering the Pleasures at the other girl's heels and guiding her to a side booth she was particularly fond of. "Hey Melly." She greeted the red haired girl that came to take their order with a cheerful smile, shifting in her seat, bouncing with energy. "Can you please tell Fabio to make me his famous chocolate espresso? I just looooove those." She was quick to add a side order to Dea's request for baked goods. "And brownies. A dozen of them." She giggles and almost bounced in the seat, glancing towards the stage and arching a brow. "You are a bard. Ooooh, could you play me a song. Pleaaaaaase. Something nice and happy."

Deaineira felt Jeanne's hand on her wrist, the girl leaning down, trying to look into what she hoped was new friend's eyes. "You don't have to do everything alone. I'll gladly help you if I can. And I am sure we can find you a bed at the Temple, at least until you find something of your own. Did you...." She swallowed a lump and then chanced the question again. "Did you get into a fight with your mother? Perhaps she won't stay mad for long. You could go back home in a couple of days."

Noting that Jenna know one of the waitress's by name she smiled. "You come here often then, Jenna?" She grinned and then looked at the child again. "A dozen brownies? That's a lot! Even I ordered two cookies, and a small slice of cake." the Achadhiel leaned back a little bit.

"You want me to sing you a song?" she thinks for a moment. "A happy song, That's a little difficult but I suppose I could come up with something. What do you want to here about? If you can give me a subject I can sing you song." she prods the girl a little with the promise of a song.

"And I don't think I'll be doing it so much alone, Jenna, as trying to figured the world out." Deianeira listens for a moment to the sound of people around them speaking, glasses clinking, the sounds of life and blood of Citadel, "And yes I did fight with my mother. It was a bit silly now that I think about it, but it's probably been a long long long time in coming." she told the girl. "Thank you for offering the Temples services." she looked at Jenna in the eye. "I don't intend on returning home ,Jenna."

"Yeah, I love brownies. And I come here as often as I can. They are always polite and they make marvelous cakes." The girl looked thoughtful for a short flicker, a small crease forming between her brows, soon erased by a broad smile. "How about a love song. Something with a happy ending. Maybe with a hero added. I used to dream about handsome princes on white steeds when I was.... well, younger. I have learned a bit since then, you know." Realizing how silly she sounded the girl, schooled her features, trying very hard to appear older, her back straightening, smile turning from happy and childish to merely polite.

She nodded seriously to Deaineira's words, chewing her lower lip thoughtfully. "I understand, though I have never had such a fight with my parents. And I hope you manage. Do you... Do you have a plan what you will do? You'll need money... And a place to stay.... And that means having to work." A frown formed on her face once more, this time aided by a small worry-line across her forehead.

smiling at the girl, Deianeira looked thoughtful. "A song about a Prince? Or love? Those songs, are so... wonderful and can be tough to perform properly." she admits. "Besides, I've heard those songs best preformed when one has a person in mind." she exhales sharply snorting through her nose. "And-" she pauses as her baked good are served. She takes a bite of the cookie. "Want a few?" she asks offering the plate with the cookies to her companion.

"You know what, you got me thinking Jenna, why is it that Princes are always envisioned on white steeds? Why not on a black or brown one? Or even a dappled horse? Why white?"

After a few more cookies dissappear from the plate she says: "I should be able to, manage. Do I have a plan? Not so much. A part of me wants to be maybe go into upper society, but that's just a really far away dream. Romance is nice, but I doubt any nobleman is going to come down from on high and pick me out of the crowd, and ask me to go with him." she smiles at the thought. "Though that would be nice." her voice has a dreamy quality to it. "But then again, I suppose there are plenty of ways to work my way into the upper eschelons of the world.

Ashari had left the rubble of the Rose with less enthusiasm than she'd had when she'd headed there. Her clothes were dirty but she was hungry, and with that thought in mind (as well as the thought of Ketch perhaps waiting at her house) she stopped into Simple Pleasures to see how her financial backing had helped the establishment. It was her first intention to gather up some food to bring back due to the lacking of such staples in the Thalas Mansion.

With nothing but routine in mind, Ashari walked up to the counter. "Good morning," her clothes bore the scent of smoke as did her skin, for she'd not fully bathed since the night prior. Her hair, atleast, had been brushed out and pinned back in a manageable bun, but already a great many tendrils had unloosed from their binding to frame her face in lusterious blue-black locks. "I'm looking for some breakfast that I can take with me for a few friends," Aerin was also not far from her mind. She figured it wouldn't take the redhead long to gather what few possesions she had. "Food for four," she figured it was better to have extra than not enough. After the exursions of the evening prior and this morning, it would do well to have a big breakfast. "A hearty nut bread and some fruit would be most charming.. as well as a cheese round if you've any for sale." She hoped they would, she was really craving a nice soft cheese.

"And.. a small favor. I'm looking for some house-help. I know all sorts come through these doors, do you perhaps know of persons in need of work? I compensate well, and even have a multitude of spare rooms." Not all of them were still in good condition, though. "I'm looking for a few maids as well as a laborer of some kind.. I have some renovations needing to get done, but I haven't the slightest idea where to find someone to help me with it." Ashari gave an embarassed smile.

Jeanne looked somewhat confused at Deaineira's words, the girl skipping from subject to subject in rapid succession, talking about a love song for a flicker before skipping to cookies and then back to Princes and horses and what not. Sighing softly, she wondered if perhaps coming there had been a mistake, but found no easy way out, hoping that she was somehow wrong and that her companion was just a bit hyperactive. Biting into her brownie she sipped at coffee and shrugged. "Don't know. I think it is because the white is the color of purity and heroes are supposed to be nice and good. At least in fairy tales and love poems." For a flicker she hesitated almost asking the other girl if she knew a song about her favorite subjects or not and then gave up.

"Those are not plans, silly, but dreams. You need to decide what you will do and start working on attaining that. You know, get a job, find a place to sleep. Stuff like that. You can't work your way into society just like that." She sighed and leaned on an elbow, munching on the brownie with a thoughtful expression. "Or rather you can if you are lucky, but luck won't always work. My grandmother used to say that hard, honest work always beats fickle luck and I think she was right."

Despite her disheveled appearance, Ashari was well known around Citadel and the moment she stepped in Florence came to her side, ushering her to a table and nodding to her requests. "Sure thing, miss Gywien. Would you like something to drink while we pack your breakfast? Or we can send it over to your house." She paused, glancing at the woman and once that bit of business was completed, pursed her lips in thought. "Hmmmm, I am not sure we would be able to help, but I suppose we could put a notice near the door for you. If you do need skilled help, we cna ask around and send someone over, but for simple laborers, you best head over to the harbor near the Imperial Trade Guild. There is always a group of teamsters hanging near that place waiting for work. For anything permanent......." She glanced up at her and seemed to come to a decision. "Wait here. I'll be right back."

Without waiting she rose and disappeared up the steps, coming back a burn later, a young man of perhaps twenty yahren in tow. With a mop of brown curls and somewhat large brown eyes, the boys most prominent features were his bright white teeth and a crooked nose who may have been broken a number of times in the past. Florence paused at the base of the steps and pointed in Ashari's direction before disappearing into the kitchen to have the order ready. The boy came and plopped into the chair opposite the lady mage and looked cheekily straight into her eyes. "Hi there, I'm Jock. Flo tells me you need some help. I can link you to the right people. Just tell me what you need and I'll send someone over in a day or two."

Takes a long drink of tea. Deianeira notes the woman's confusion. "I'm sorry." she says after a long moment of reflection. "So many thoughts are racing around my mind at times. I become a little side tracked." She admits. She nods. "I know it's just a dream, and you're correct, I won't get into society like that. Unless I get really lucky, and the Mother decides I should, which isn't gonna happen. I do need a better plan. Thank to just sing for my supper. The people would get tired of my limited repetoire of songs." she taps a finger on the table.

"Any suggestions, Jenna?" she asks with a bit of honesty in eyes. "I need your help. I suppose my only real, skill is song, at least one that could make money. Well I can cook some, but that's probably just enough of a job to afford food and lodgings without too much worry. But I also want to do some traveling, someday. So I've got two dreams which go in two opposite directions." she bites into another cookie. "How did you get on the path you are on, though Jenna? If I can ask?"

"I don't mind waiting for it," Ashari replied. "I have some time before needing to meet them anyway." She waved her hand at the offer of drink in the mean-time. "No, that won't be necessary. I don't intend on hanging about. Hmmm... notice on your board. You know, I think that might just do the trick." Luring young people looking for work to her door was certainly one way to meet those who considered themselves high enough in class to come to Simple Pleasures, but also wanted something more. "Thanks so much, Florence. Can you manage writing something up for me? I'm in need of all sorts of help, honestly. I've decided to re-establish my house after the fall of the Guild." One thing girl's in the coffee house knew was rumors, and she was quite sure that Flo would have a good idea of what she was talking about. "Maids, gardeners, doormen, butlers, cooks, musicians, artists. I need all sorts of people." She said with a smile. Things were likely to get interesting.

When the young woman left, Ashari took a flicker to examine her fingers, and began picking at the remnants of wood and soot under her nails. She was quite the mess. Jock's appearance and boldness drew her from such meticulous (and ridiculous) movements to give him her entire attention. "You are a very goodlooking young man, Jock. Pleasure," she countered to his even eyes and daring attentiveness. Ashari's lips lifted into a broad grin, but she moved casually from the compliment to the business. "My house has seen some damage and is need of repair. There was destruction to the rear portion by means of a mage fighting with a demon," It was a fantastic claim, but it was the honest truth. "And also four walls have been burned right through." She shook her head in mock dismay. "Such a shame, really. I should like the rooms in which there is damage to be entirely redone. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction to someone who might assist me properly?"

Florence nodded vigorously at Ashari’s words. “You just write down what you want and I’ll post it for you nd direct people to your home if they show interest. Heck, I might even give them subtle hints to give the note a look.” She grinned and winked, and then left at last, getting the food ready and leaving the Guildmistress to Jock’s mercy. The boy arched a brow at the mention of a demon, but did not interrupt her, chewing his lower lip as she finished. “So you’ll need yourself a mason and probably a carpenter and some burly workers who will listen to their directions? And I can indeed point you in the right direction.” With the same cheeky grin he pointed a thumb at his chest and chuckled. “Most reliable people are working for Michael Crane, trying to rebuild the Red Banner. But, you don’t want those that work for him anyway. They are tainted now. I’ll go see if old Thurble is still alive. He may be cranky and loud mouth, but he was the best mason around. You don’t mind if old men rebuild you home, don’t ya? Just don’t let them decorate it or it’ll be boring.” He grinned and waited to see if she was pleased with a choice.

“Erm…….. Well, you could become a proper bard if you can sing. There is a Bardic College here in Citadel. And they take in students and help them improve and even give you an official license when you finish. My brother Jacques went there and got his license half a yahren ago. Last letter he sent was from Amun Rah and was working for a local noble as a regular entertainer. You could end like him if you are good.” There was a hint that she wanted to say something more, Jeanne’s tone not lowering at the last word, but she said nothing more.

The question about her, had the young girl smiling happily, the reply delayed by the process of her devouring another brownie and having the manners not to speak with her mouth full. “Three months ago there was a huge riot in the Outer Ring. Captain Ulder lead the Purple Guards down from the palace and tried to close down the place called Basilisk’s Stare. They killed some of the gang members that got in the way and people decided they should have stayed away. At least that is what people used to say, but I am not so sure. I think it was just an excuse for the gangs to loot and pillage.” A shadow fell over Jeanne’s features, the girl’s eyes growing a bit distant. “Mom and I lived near the Stare and…. Well, I don’t remember what happened, but when I woke up I was hurting all over and they said Mom was dead. Healers at the Temple saved me from death, but could not save my Mom. And I did not have a home to go back to so….. I stayed and after a while decided I wanted to help people like the healers at the Temple do.” She chuckled nervously and rubbed the bridge of her nose. “Sorry, not a very happy tale, but…. That’s how it happened.”

Flo was more helpful than she could've imagined. To think, she had almost considered not stopping into the establishment. Such attentiveness from the staff was likely to encourage continual interest from the young woman, espcially if Florence was able to point people in her direction. "Will do," she replied to the girl.

"I don't care their age so long as they can manage the task for a decent price," she said succinctly to Jock. "What do you mean the men who worked for Michael are tainted?" Ashari couldn't help her curiosity. It would seem the general populace also had a distaste for the younger Crane. Such a thing would be of great interest to the mage with her current war-path toward undermining his attempts at thrusting his father, and even she from the city. Ash was not one to be so easily swayed.

"I suppose you might have an ear for a carpenter specializing in furnishings as well? I think I'll be in need of purchasing some pieces, be they new or used, doesn't matter so long as they fit my tastes." Tastes which were becoming increasinly sophisticated. She felt somewhat smothered in the tacky merchant decor of Thalas Manse. Iorn and she hadn't the mind to change it when they first moved in because they were just so damn excited about having their own place. Now, however, it was time for change.

"Oh, they can manage, and the price won't be much of a problem. They like their work, and from what I heard they have all saved enough to live the rest of their days peacefully. They do it for fun now." The boy grinned when she asked for a carpenter and winked. "Just ask Thurble when he arrives. IF anybody knows a decent carpenter it'll be him. I have to warn you, he may be a bit hard to talk to. Has a short temper and is a tad grumpy. But, he'll do the job and you can be sure it'll be done properly. No half-assed shit from him." he nodded sagely, trying to look older by making a serious face, his eyes flashing towards Flo, but quickly returning to Ashari.

"Well, that sounds perfectly fantastic, then. Thanks so much. I'll do my best to deal with Thurble and his sour temperment. You see... I've often got a way," she winked playfully. "Jock, you've been essentially helpful. Please, if there's anything I might do to assist you, let me know." She said with a smile. He had ignored her initial question about Crane's men, and their taint, but she was not above pushing the matter and seeing if he might address it properly.

"But what of the men this 'Michael' has hired? Why are they no good anymore?" She watched as he elevated his posture and did his best immitation of adult and proficient. It worked, but she had a strong feeling thanks to his glance at Flo, that the display wasn't for her. In a quieter tone, she asked. "Have you a thing for Florence?" Her eyes sparkled with interest.

She just had to press the question, and just when Jock was hoping she had forgotten about it, his frown quickly replaced by a serious expression, the smile gone from his face. "Mike's a bastard, and people know it. Once you work for him, he starts expecting stuff and tends to get real bossy. But, that's not the problem. Problem is that some people should not better than to hang out with his type. Greed is no excuse for picking a side, and treachery deserves a punishment." He smiled weakly and added. "I have said too much. If you know what is going on in the city, you'll know what I talking about." Another glance was cast at Flo and the boy smiled some more. "She's cute, but works too hard. I keep asking her to take a break and chat with me, but....." He shrugged and returned his gaze to Ashari.

Ash nodded, "I won't push the issue any further," she replied slowly. "I know what you speak of. Sometimes the glint of coins are more important than morals, Jock," she offered. "And not all can be judged so harshly for looking for pay in these recent times which have been hard on many who have mouths to fill at home." It was true. The riots had disrupted a lot of work, but had also created a vacuum of need for men with their capabilities. Mike must've offered them a good amount to forgo other jobs and work exclusively for him.

It meant he was continuing to spread himself thin. Such was welcome news to Ash's ears.

"I believe I'll be having a party after I get my house all fixed up, you've just earned yourself an invitation, as well as oppertunity to bring a date," she smiled, and glanced over to Flo. "She is cute, you're right." Reaching into her purse she procured four circlets and slid them across the table beneath her palm. "Buy her an elegant dress and insist she come out to dance," she suggested. "I may come back to speak with you, and I may just ask more about Michael, so you do well to keep your ears and eyes open." Ash rose from her seat at the small table, leaving the circlets exposed only for as long as it would take Jock to scoop them up.

She then made her way back over to the counter and gave Flo a smile, "Got everything packed up and ready? I'm starving..." She paid the girl what she owed her and picked up her parcel, fully ready to head back to Thalas Manse and share brunch with her new apprentice.

OOC: Fanks! I'm out unless Jock has anything he'd like to add.

Jock really did not want to discuss Michael and his lackeys any more than was absolutely necessary, the nasty crime lord being too powerful lately for him to risk crossing him and choosing sides too openly. Flo was a much better topic and with an impish grin the boy swiped the coins away and winked. "Damn, lady, you are one of a kind. I warn you though. I don't know much about Michael and stuff. Just what I hear, but if that is good enough for you......" He waited for her to leave before making his way to the bar and ordering another coffee, trying to chat up Flo for the umpteenth time and once more making very little progress.

"That's fine, Jock. I'm just always looking for another set of ears and eyes in this city where there are just too many on me," she smiled, and found herself quite happy with her charity toward the handsome young man. "I'll keep in touch with that invite," she added over her shoulder with a wink, and hoped it might inspire Flo into asking him what he'd been invited to...

OOC: FIN, for real this time.

And I did not have a home to go back to so….. I stayed and after a while decided I wanted to help people like the healers at the Temple do.” She chuckled nervously and rubbed the bridge of her nose. “Sorry, not a very happy tale, but…. That’s how it happened.”

Listneing Deianeira noded. "I am sorry to hear about your mother, but I am glad you survived." she munches down a cookie trying to think about things "In a way the temple's helping you help others. Like how your helping me right now, Jeane." she pushed the plate of cookies away and began to drink her tea slowly.

"Bardic college" Deianeira said musing on the words on the world it might open up for her.." It's expensive isn't it? How could I pay for it and find a place to live and make money?" she wrinkled her nose and turned away as she sneezed lightly. "I guess I could live with one of my brothers. No. I can't they've already done so much and I probably shouldn't impose, do you think thar might be imposition, Jeane?"

"Oh, but I don't think the College is expensive. From what I heard you work for your lessons a few days of the week and as long as you can find a teacher there you can learn anything. But, that is just what I heard. I could be nothing but rumors." Jeanne shrugged and sipper her beverage slowly, trying to remember what her brother told her of the College. "I think the only thing you need to pay for is the license. It is a test before licensed bards and it costs quite a bi, but it will be a while before you can take it." At this she added quickly. "I mean, you will have time to earn money for the test."

Looking down at the spread before her, Deianeira licked her lips. "Well then that makes it quiet a bit different. It means that I could theoretically work on on skill improvements, and learning. She begins to fumble through money pouch. "Let's pay for this and then take a walk through the city, or do you have duties to attened to, Jeanne?" Deianeira is genuinely concerned. Had she kept the girl too long? Or was she simply boring her with her trivial life.

Jeanna's hand caught Deianeira'a before the girl could pay for the cakes and drinks, reaching into her own pouch and leaving a few coins upon the table, waving to the barmaid before slipping from the seat. "I can keep you company for a little while, but I can't stay the entire day. Let's go." Jeanne slipped her hand under Deaineira's arm and smiled.
