More or Less a Mermaid

With his teeth clenched around the brightly glowing stick, Lucas kicked his way downward towards Mio. With the glow illuminating his way, the young pirate was quickly inundated with several compelling visions, sights that gave him to feel some indecision for a moment.

The first thing he noticed was the sea creature that had attacked Mio. No creature was this, for it appeared to be a man in shape, and it struggled for the surface like any other man caught under the water. Whatever strange twist of fate that had brought this newcomer among them was certainly beyond Lucas' grasp, but he was uninterested in speculation at that time. What the seaman did speculate was whether the unknown man truly intended to kill Mio, and what Lucas would do about that. Let him be fer now...'e ain't goin nowhere... he thought.

The second vision that gave Lucas some pause was the sight of Mio, clearly succumbing to the water. While Lucas knew very little of elves, he was generally very accustomed to the appearance of drowned persons, and Mio demonstrated every sign that she had no time left, if she still lived at all. And even if she does, I'm no healer. What can I do to help her after I've taken her from the water? he thought, his uncertainty giving him less than a heartbeat's pause.

The third vision that gave Lucas pause...and easily the one that drew his attention the most...was the sight of the box that Mio had found just before her suffering. All at once, Lucas' prior daydreaming about buried treasure...or in this case sunken treasure...returned in full force, a chest of pirate's gold that would make them all wealthy for the remainder of their lives. Naturally, there was ill fate often involved with pirate's gold...it was bad luck to unearth someone else's hoard...but Lucas would have risked the luck ten times over before leaving a fortune behind in such a gloomy place as this.

After a brief moment to take in these sights, Lucas reached past the scrambling man in the water to collect Mio by the collar and pull her upward, dragging her towards the bank with his long, quick strokes. There would be time enough to square out with whoever was here. And there would be time enough later to investigate just what was inside that chest.

Tevis was holding her stick about to jump into the water after Mio when all hell broke loose. Lucas jumping in the water to rescue Mio, and Mackaree stomping and yelling. She was waiting at the water's edge to help Lucas bring Mio out of the water. She too had her own ideas about that box in the bottom of the water, and as soon as Mio was ok she was going to the water. She was going to ask Lucas about going with her, just for security, Tevis was sure Bahjek wouldn't let William out of his sight and just like him, she was begining to become unsure about William's motives on this little adventure.

Bahjek noticed William was looking even more uneasy as time went on. The elf creped along the edge of the light until he was near William. Bahjek saw the short man start to stomp his foot and said something about one of the lights coming back toward them. "You little bastard! whats going on?" Bahjek yelled as he drew his dagger. "You will be the one to save her or at least try if you value your pitiful life." The elf growled and anger seethed throughout his body. With that he began to approach William in a lower stance and dagger turned outward.

Santino still clung to Mio, unaware of her drowning, seeking air whatever the cost might be. He sought only to use her body as leverage so that he might reach air before his own lungs collapsed. Working hard to cling with fading strength, he would doubtless feel himself lifting up if only by virtue of Lucas's efforts. The World's Mouth native would hold tight to the blanket and whatever purchase he could find on Mio as she was hoisted toward the surface, perhaps resigning himself to the fact that if he was going to die, he was going to take as many with him as he could. It might not have been the nicest thing to do, but it was very survivalist, and life wasn't something that the dark-haired wraith was willing to give up just yet.

Bones stuck out from limbs like bones, weak from malnutrition, the cloak he had been wearing when he'd struck out from the city as a stowaway the only thing he now possessed, giving him an even more spectral visage. His almost hawkish and sharply angular features lent themselves to the illusion, as did the billowsome hair that had gone far too long without a proper haircut. In short, Santino didn't look very aesthetically pleasing.

The young would-be philosopher kicked as best he could, limited swimming ability and all, toward the surface, straining to find the air that he would surely die without. Far too preoccupied to notice much of anything of these strangers, all that Santino could do was push as best he could for the sweet air above the waves and hope that he might live yet, mouth gasping toward the imagined air. Regardless of whether it was actually present or not.

Mackaree shrieked again and backed off as far as he could at the sight of Bahjek's well known knife. All too soon his back encountered the unwavering rocky wall, making it impossible to get away, no matter how hard he tried.

"I can't swim!" The little man panicked as his adversary came closer.

Two swift shadows jumped in front of the questionable expeditionleader. Amos and Kito had no weapons out, but as a fighter it was blatantly obvious to Bahjek that they could in the blink of an eye. Something in their stance betrayed the twins to be so much more than the clownesque duo they presented.

"Not worth murdering." Said Amos -or Kito. Either way: he had a moustache.
"Keep your knife down." Spoke the other.
"He might not look like much..."

"Hey!" Mackaree interjected, but hushed after a look at that dreaded knife.

"But we won't have you kill him."
"Sorry." They ended in unison.

Behind Tevis something moved.
A flash of green from the corner of her eyes.
A soft touch of something moving, shifting the air, then suddenly ducking and grabbing the parchments that had spilled out of Mackaree's scrollholder.

Under water the struggle for breath and life continued. Lucas reached Mio and got a good hold of her, despite the desperate moves of Santino who still hung on. The pirate's limited swimmingskills were nicely compensated by sheer strength and conviction, causing him to haul Mio to the surface shortly, even though it still seemed to have taken too long looking at her still body.

The sudden momentum upwards actually helped Santino reach for that breath of life he craved. Nobody tried to stop him or even hinder him. Instead Lucas' strength gave the drowning man the last push he needed to break through.

Soon the soaked threesome found themselves able to reach the grounds. Mio was not breathing. She looked very pale in the eerie green light.

Such a pretty light shines in the distance as Mio plays with the other children. They take her hand and ask her if she wants to come along. The light is very white and it almost hurts her eyes, but it is very inviting and warm.
Too pale.

Mio danced playfully with the children. She couldn't remember ever feeling so peaceful, and so she took their hands and laughed. She remembered now; This was what it was like to be a child again, so uncaring and free. A smile lit her face as she remembered reading books at bedtime with her grandfather, long walks beside rivers and games that stretched into the night. The light was so beautiful, so pure and quiet seeming, and Mio watched it curiously as it grew brighter. She stretched her neck luxuriously as its warmth spread out towards, embracing her invitingly as she took a step towards it. And stopped.

There was something she should be remembering, something important. She closed her eyes, and shook her head, trying to clear the feeling and bring back that wonderful calm atmosphere. But no, the feeling was persistent, and Mio tugged on the children's hands to free herself. People. She should be remembering people, but who she didn't know. A stranger without a shirt flitted briefly before her eyes but she shook her head, determinedly taking a step towards the light, that inviting and warm light.
It looked nice to be in, but the persistent buzz of memory in her ear made her shake her head again, stumbling backwards to try and clear it.

Guided by the strange, ghostly light of the twig held between his teeth, Lucas Merdoc reached the drowned elf and pulled her watery, motionless form close. Too late, am I? Figure an elf ta be no good in t'water... thought the pirate, though he quickly settled her form over his shoulder with a firm grip upon her legs. If she dies, I'll have ta make someone bleed... thought the pirate, the woman's lifeless form enough to feed his uncontrollable rage.

Pushing off from the floor of the basin, Lucas broke the surface of the water and quickly trudged up the rocky bank with his elven burden still over his shoulder. Once out of the water, he glanced around to find chaos once again, as the contrary half-elf had taken to threatening Mackaree once more, and this time with knives. To make matters perhaps even more ludicrous, the dark form in the waters...the man that had threatened and possibly taken the elfess' life...stood only paces away, clearly unguarded and unchallenged at all. A right damned Bartholomew's Fair. I've no time for this...

"YOU!" barked Lucas, pointing a calloused finger at the newcomer who, despite his threatening entrance, appeared to be in no better condition than any of the rest of them. "Grab that..." Lucas pointed towards his sabre that remained where he had left it, lying on the rocky bank just under the clear water "...and come w'me," he said, turning to take Mio to the nearest patch of relatively dry ground. He would keep the newcomer close until he learned a few things about the guy, such as why he was here and whether he could be trusted.

Carefully, Lucas deposited the elf woman upon the rocky ground and placed his head upon her chest to listen for some sign of life. "You lift 'er legs, an I'll try ta get her breathin' again. And you short runts! Bring some of that rum!" ordered Lucas, glancing once at the newcomer to see if he would do as he was told. Regardless of what he heard from within her breast, the sailor pinched the woman's nose shut and placed his mouth over hers, hoping to revive her from her drowning. It ain't unlike a kiss, only arsey-verse. Ya gotta breath fer 'em fer a bit...get 'em ta coughin'...

Air- it was sweet and it was so achingly simple a desire, and yet Santino was quite sure that he would never part from his companionship of the sky again. There was no solace beneath the waves; and no matter what the young philosopher might suppose, he was not built for any sort of physical exertion. Books were comforting and less likely to result in burning lungs. He started to contemplate something or other (who can ever tell with the intellectual type?), but was distracted by Lucas's rather rude interruption. The young man looked up and saw what the strange man was asking for, and rolled his eyes. Hardly worthy of interrupting someone's philosophic reverie. Hardly.

Sighing mournfully, as if some horrible atrocity had been commited upon him, Santino moved over and picked up the sabre, trudging as dispiritedly as he possibly could. Even so, despite his perhaps childish reaction, the stowaway-turned-cast-away recognized the urgency of the situation. He'd follow Lucas, for the moment, if only because his dissatisfaction and tiredness (not to mention the near-drowning, which was seldom a pleasant experience) made him incapable of arguing. But -man-, would Lucas ever be in for it, should the circumstances allow for any sort of reasonable discussion. Oh yes, Santino had no doubt that- whatever his disposition- this strange and barking fellow would be a very reasonable debater of logic. He wasn't sure if he was in for some sort of heavy disappointment or not.

Listening idly to Lucas, rolling his eyes and trying his best to be petulant wherever possible, though he still got things done, recognizing that this elfess was in danger. He didn't, yet, feel remorse for whatever part he had played in her current condition, though he wasn't exactly prideful, either. Numb... that was the best way to describe how Santino felt. Oh, and irritated, and argumentative- but those particular sensations could wait until the situation was less pressing.

The water added considerable weight to Mio's limp form. It was a wonder the weakened sailor managed to get her out at all. Yet here the new scene unfolded: a drenched pirate with the unconscious Adhiel over his shoulder; another soaked through mysteryman standing in the distance; A hot-tempered one waving yet another knife; the twins standing between the knife and the squealing merchant and last but not least Tevis, who stood silently by while yet another unknown shadowy form made a grab for whatever papers had spilled out of the safe leather holder.

It was strange to say the least.
Surreal might be a better term to describe the situation.
Maybe Lucas was right and the only way to explain this was simply: chaos.

The momentary silence was broken and with that the strange paralysation that had come over the little group. The ratty twins saluted smartly and ran for the equipment, one of them grabbing a bottle -that by the form of it simply had to be rum- and the other several blankets.

As Santino sprang into action grudgingly Amos and Kito returned, rubbing Mio's arms with the dry blankets and putting down the rum where Lucas could reach for it at ease.

Sailing being his life, Lucas knew about drowning...and some about how to prevent it. His guesses were right: the water had to get out of the woman now and the way he had slung her over his shoulder had provided the necessary first little waterfall.

As he breathed into Mio's mouth, her chest rose, making a soft, gurgling sound. There obviously was still water left in the Adhiel's lungs.

As Mio steps back from the light, she gets an irresistable urge to cough. Suddenly it is very hard to breathe as a weight is pressing down on her. Coughing would be so nice.
Coughing would really clear the sinusses...

The shadow in the background made a grab for the rest of the scrolls.

The deepening pressure to cough made Mio shake her head, stumbling blindly away from the light. All she could feel now was...pain. Bad pain. Mio squeezed her eyes shut and fell to her knees, hands groping at her chest as it grew tighter and tighter, her lungs seeming to close tight as she flailed desperately for air.

Cold air rushed like liquid into Mio's mouth as she lurched forward, gasping and choking as she sucked the air in hungrily. She fell to her side, coughing as the pain in her chest intensified for a moment before easing as fresh oxygen reached her parched lungs. Mio pressed her face against cold, hard stone, desperately seeking an anchor to reality. Exhausted and shivering violently with the cold, she finally remembered to open her eyes and let out a strangled cry. The man before her was a ghost, and horribly familiar: the groping man in the water. Panicked, she scrambled backwards, staring, wide-eyed and terrified at the man. He had tried to kill her! What the hell was he doing here!?

"Fine William shall not die today", Bahjek said coldly. He put away his dager and turned around from the little man. As angered achadhiel turned he looked at William and said, "Once this is over you will take me home and I had better not see you ever again."Bahjek turned to Lucas, "Is there anything I can do to help?"

As Mio allowed the air to fill her lungs, feeling returned to her limbs. Scrambling back was no problem, leaving the two men behind that had both hindered and saved her life.

*splish-splash-splish-splash*

With amazing speed the ghostly face of Santino made room for the smiling, green face of a creature none had seen before. It looked amazingly much like a very small Adhiel, only it's skin was green and glistened all over.

"You're a nice singer, you can go." It murmered with a lovely sing-song accent. A little twig touched her and all of a sudden a huge explosion filled the air.

Mio was gone.

In her stead a green-eyed man lay on the cold, rocky floor. His black hair was as soaked through as Santino and Lucas, as were his clothes. Nothing in his appearance suggested a lovely female Adhiel had just been there.

"My bags! My papers!" Mackaree cried out and ran for the scrolls that had spilled out of a heavy leather sack. The man did not mind the big bang at all. The other bags were still safely propped up against the wall, illuminated by the same eerie light that had caused the explosion.

In all the confusion the funny little green elf tried to make his escape without anyone noticing.

The light was not strong enough to reach the ceiling of this cave, proving it to be higher than a giant at least. The yelling man's voice echoed back, underlined by the soft rushing of waves somewhere further off. The inner salt lake was almost still, save for a few leftover waves tickling Zarkazar's toes.

One of the ratty twins walked over to Zarkazar and stared him straight in the face, moustache twitching. "Well, hell-ooo newcomer!"

"What the..." began Zarkazar, before realising that he couldn't think of a swear word adequate enough to express his confusion. He sprang to his wet feet, and forced himself to smile a friendly smile, despite the fact that he felt betrayed by the mermaid, and that he his friend Talik may have died for nothing. "Hello yourself," said Zarkazar to the fellow who had spoken to him. "Before we become firm friends, as I'm sure we will, let's start with the basics. Who? Where? Why? Feel free to answer in any order you choose." One hand crept to his sword.

Bahjek was shocked to see Mio just disapper and this human was standing in her spot. After the inatial shock Bahjek found his words, "Hello, My name is Bahjek. As to where we are you would have to ask the short bald human over there." He pointed in William's direction.

"There is no need for that sword of your's right now. Now as for thewhy are you here I for one was hoping yo might know why you are here and how you got here." The elf smiled at the human, but keeped his hand on his dagger just to be safe.

"No, no, no, this is not as it is supposed to go!" The bald man stamped his feet in frustration. "Where did our singer go? Where do all these new people come from? This is nuts! Not good, not good at all...I need strong, healthy people!"

The dripping wet clothes of the newcomer attracted his attention. Mackaree's eyes began to glisten with something else besides the usual stress. The little man stepped forward and tentatively reached out a hand.

"William Mackaree, part-time researcher for the University of True Knowledge. You just came....from there?" He pointed at the salty lake. "You would not have seen anything interesting underwater while coming up? Now that I come to think of it..." He turned to Santino. "The same goes for you, of course. You are all very welcome to join our hunt for the mermaids, but in the meantime I am really really interested in what you found in these waters!"

The ratty twins were laughing their heads of at the sudden change of heart in their dubious leader. "Don't mind him." The moustached one said.
"He's just..." The other added.
"Obsessed." The first finished before they started another bout of laughter.

Where is the reward I was promised? thought Zarkazar. He certainly wasn't expecting to be abandoned in a cave full of loons.
"I really need some answers," he said, "and I need them quickly. It would be a shame for brutal stabbings to become essential." he drew his sword in a casual manner, and idly scratched the floor with it, although the threat was hopefully clear.

Confused, his eyes darted all about. It wasn't like Santino to be this perplexed, and all that had happened so recently, with the apparently endless cast of figures, all of them new, suddenly milling about. The philosopher wasn't built for this sort of work, and was suddenly startled to find it all... changing, so swiftly. There was no time for thought, and that -in particular- is what bothered him.

He withdrew into himself, sliding backward and peering at all those gathered with genuine distrust on his face. His mind wrapped about it all, eyes widened with distrust and wonderment. It wouldn't be long, though, before he stood up- eyes wild with paranoia... considering all that had happened to him of late, perhaps unsurprising.

"YOU. WHO THE HELL ARE YOU LOT, AND WHY ARE YOU IN MY CAVE?!" He asked, the words shouted at a volume that was probably inappropriate for a cave setting- reverberating off of the walls and ceiling. He was tired and out of it, and was most certainly not in any mood for what had just happened- all of of it perplexing and confusing in the extreme.

Bahjek was getting ready to draw his dagger when someone yelled something about being in his cave. The achadhiel looked at the man whom he thought had spoke and replied, "I don't know ask that stupid human over there." He pointed in William's direction. "I was dragged along and he is my way home. So I thought I would tag alongand now I am here in your cave. Which by the way I will be very happy to leave... um what did you say your name was?"

Bahjek still felt uneasy about all the rock that was hovering above his head, and he tried his hardest not to think about it. This, however, did not make him forget that there happened to be a sword drawn and it was not his.

Mackaree lifted his hands. "Alright, I can see you are much distraught. I can imagine...I do not know what happened to you, but those waters certainly seem to hold many more secrets than we anticipated. You are not a merman by any chance?" He half-jested, surveying this newest arrival.

"Yet I do believe I asked a few questions first. How about we try to get them all answered instead of firing off new ones?" The bald man tried, his voice even sounding nice. Yet the moment the sword was drawn, he backed off, hiding safely behind anyone who happened to be close. "No swords! No need for swords! Oh, why does this keep on happening? Now I have two sword-happy people!"

Santino's outburst pushed him over the edge. With a familiar squeal the little man ran back to his bags, trembling between the leather luggage. "This isn't your cave!" He still dared, quickly followed by a confused look at the ratty twins, who were clasping their bellies in wild fits of hysterical laughter. "Or is it?"

Obviously their fearless expedition leader was more than happy to leave any unpleasant details to Bahjek right now, who seemed to be the only one in his right mind for a change.

Bahjek glanced over at William just to see the little bald man running around like a squirrel. If the situation was different the achadheil might have laughed at the man. The elf focused on Zarkazar, then spoke to Santino,"We are trying to find....oh what is that word....well they are like part human and part fish. Ah! Mermaids, that the word." The elf's gaze never left Zakazar. "William quit running around like a Squirrle! You need to act more like a man, besides where are you going to hide?"

"I was here first! Of course it's my cave!" Spoken, of course, with a touch more ire than was strictly required-- as Santino was most certainly not in a balanced emotional state, just now. Eyes glared from one person to the next- completely ignorant of his current plight. Dark eyes were even with Bahjek's own, a stoney frown and an accusing finger directed at Bahjek. "If you're looking for mermaids, maybe you missed what just happened!" Rather delirious, of course, in terms of what he spoke, Santino laughed a bit edgily.

"Of all the rubbish in the world!" That laugh continued, increasingly dark with every passing second. "Mermaids! In -my- cave! Hahahahaha..." Santino turned around and pointed vaguely in everywhich direction. "Oh, I'm sorry. Of -course- there are mermaids here. And then perhaps Lord Balthasar will emerge from the waves doing a traditional dance of Pan, naked, while singing songs he learned in the Duchy. Of all the idiotic..." Santino trailed off, leaning against the wall and sighing with more than a modicrum of exasperation.

"Come to your senses, man! There's a logical explanation for it all, I tell you!" Not sure of what he said, of course, but Santino was determined to make himself believe in the logic of his personal philosophy- even if meant denying what lay before his eyes even at this particular moment.

Zarkazar put his sword away and held up his hands in a peaceful gesture.
"Obviously everyone is a little stressed at the moment. Let's all be calm and we can get out of here without anyone being murdered. First things first, is there an exit from this cave that doesn't involve swimming? Because I've had my fill of the sea for now; first as a pirate, then as a pirate hunter. Both times I ended up almost drowning, and I don't relish a third time." He pointed at William. "By the way, what's in the bags?" Zarkazar judged William to be probably the one who could give him some answers, but this assessment was only based on the scrolls that had spilled on the floor.

At this point William decided to ignore the horribly offensive man that had been pestering him ever since he set foot on board of Montega's unnamed ship. He more or less straightened his back and looked back at Santino, doubt still visible in his eyes.

"Your cave...because you were here first? I think you are mistaken. You were not here first, unless you are much, much older than you look." There was a new audacity to his statement, nothing of that squirrel behaviour that ticked off Bahjek.

"Oh, sir," He addressed Zarkazar, who was still soaked through. "I assure you we did not swim here. There is a cosy way out of here and a ship waiting for us, no less.

At Zarkazar's mention of his bags the little man started to straighten them out, noticing the one that had toppled over, spilling it's scrolls.

"Besides, if women can disappear into puffs of green light, man can appear in the same flicker and a weird green little man can take off with my scrolls, I am sure mermaids can exist too...hold on..."

The meaning of his own words just dawned on William Mackaree and a horrified look spread over his face, eyes bulging and mouth dropping. "My...scrolls....my SCROLLS! It took my scrolls! Where is that animal? What was it? Why didn't anybody STOP IT!"

A new kind of panic spread as the balding man looked around for the available exits. "Did anybody see what happened? Oh, dear gods in heaven, this is just typical, isn't it? Damn the mermaids, now tell me what you saw when you were under water!" The last question was thrown back at Santino.

With a sigh, Zarkazar sat down and crossed his legs.
"I can assure you mermaids do exist. I know this for a fact because I rescued one from a pirate hunter's ship. She promised me a reward and the treacherous swine has left me here with a crowd of babbling idiots." He smiled. "No offense." He began to make pattern in the dirt with a damp finger. "You say you have a ship? Where is it going, and which cabin will I have? Where are you lot from anyway, and why are you here in this very unimpressive cave?" Zarkazar leaned back and waited; he had the feeling that he might not get the answers he wanted, but felt the need to ask questions.
