Bertram suppressed a small smile of triumph when Kitlanya's mother sat her down next to him.
Turning that hidden smile into one for Kit, "Welcome back Kit, I have missed you so much, Wine?". He poured a little wine into her glass.

Looking around he saw Andolin leave, following one of his charges he suspected, "Well Kit, I wonder who Andolin is having a tryst with now, seems to be a bit of a ladies man as far as I can see".
He watched sideways at Kit, trying to see what effect his words would have, and quickly changed the subject. "What did you think of the poems, I do belive the best won with Elaine, do you"?

Andi Returns

Post by Andolin »

In came Andolin, from his trying experience in the garden. At least he prevented Vanir from entering again this evening.

Pausing to eye the audience, he moved towards Larbeido. At least he now had a reason to speak with the man. Let Silk's spies overhear it. He would then deal with Kitlanya's family.

Moving up beside the Guildmaster, he noted that the man had been speaking with Elaine and Adrian. Surely Elaine was not so foolish as to join the Guild. He certainly hoped not. "Good evening Guildsmaster, might I have a moment of your time?" He gestured over to the most private part of the room he could find.

In the Great Hall more and more people were joining the dancefloor, as the bard group provided suitable music. There was a lightness to the air that had been absent while the Ceasar was still present. Now people were free to mingle, to share a drink and simply talk without too much thought for the oppressive court etiquette.

Dance?

Adrian smiled and nodded at Marius, giving no inclinations about what was going on in his mind. He watched Elaine's reaction one more time when it came to the phantom noble. He knew he was full of something, and it smelled like trouble.

He looked to Elaine and gave her that thousand-crown smile of his, trying to ignore the fact that Marius even stopped by.

"Why, I think it's a lovely idea, Elaine! To have such an honor is quite a blessing!" he replied with mirth, carefully taking Elaine's hand (slow enough so that she could feel the movement and not be surprised).

Kissing her hand softly, as if trying to kiss away that noble's presence from her he looked over to Larbiedo.

"Don't worry, master, I'll be sure to let everyone know you allowed me to dance with her... can't have any false spread that one of your own students stole away a lady from you, right?" Adrian ribbed. "Come, Elaine, I'll find a place for space for you and I. No need to be in a place so crowded, I know how easily you can get headaches."

Giving a final wave to his headmaster, he took Elaine by the hand to find a more open place on the dancefloor. He tried to be quiet in his speech as he spoke quietly to Elaine, trying to not have anyone but them hearing.

"Alright, you probably know that little birdys will listen to our conversation, so in order to minimize things, let's try to play a game of innuendo. We're both poets here, so I think we can come up with something we can both understand without prying ears to find us."

Impossible to escape.
No matter how small the gesture, De Winter had made his point once again. Elaine gritted her teeth, quickly curtsied to hide it and managed a polite: "You do me too much honour, lord. I will make sure not to waste too much of your time." She certainly hoped there would be no time at all spent in his presence until the moment that she knew how to circumvent that idiotic panic.

Luckily the man's busy schedule allowed her to relax. The girl smiled at Adrian's kind handkiss and followed his lead. Undoubtedly that the Rose was better versed at dancing that she was, but at least she could try to stay in tune.

The conversation was no surprise at all. Glad that Adrian had picked up on her wish to talk Elaine nodded at his suggestion. "Certain birds are even better at prying than finding the seeds out in the open." She offered, remembering Marius' mindgames all too well. "So let us keep it short as well. How is your new housing? Are there many obligations?"

It would be interesting to find out if there had been a prize for the gallant Rose to pay to get himself to safety. The Achadhiel wanted to know, even had to know. Whatever had happened after the dreadful night in the dungeons: many allegiances had shifted and now it was time to find the order in the appearant chaos.

Meanwhile her mind started to take in the music and her feet tried to follow Adrian's moves. Concentrated Elaine tried to switch between dancing and talking without tripping herself -or worse: Adrian. "Please have patience," she smiled apologetically, "this is only my second time on a dancefloor...and the first time with actual music!"

Larbeido smiled at Marius's words and listened as he talked to Adrian and Elaine. His trained eye saw her tense and try to hide it under her curtsey. Interesting, there is something between them, and not good I feel, He watched Marius go and was about to speak further to elaine when Andolin Approached.

"Of course Protocol Master, please lead the way". As he followed Andolin he said in a lower tone, "I assume Celestine gave you my message"?

"Yes, just now," he began, as he led the Guildmaster over towards a wall less crowded. "It is about Celestine that I wanted to discuss," he said loud enough for any spies to overhear. "It does not seem that the duties of a page are ... best suited for her. She seems far more interested in learning the ... joy ... that Pan has to offer, so perhaps she could be transferred to the temple. Let me tell you of something embarrassing she has done," he offered in a low voice. Then leaning in to whisper to Larbeido, as it to tell him an embarrassing and humorous story, Andolin whispered. "Your life is in danger. You already owe me, but I think you will owe me more when you hear what I have to say. If you would hear more, I will have a coach waiting out in front of the Rose Guild on the morning of the 18th. It will bring you to meet my carriage, where we can converse together privately for several burns. Both of us are being watched." He laughed as if the story he whispered had been quite humorous. Pulling back, he paused to see if the Guildmaster was interested.

OOC~ Edited to remove a time knot. Meeting rescheduled for the morning of the 18th.

Larbeido Listened carefully to what Andolin said, unsurprised really at what he proposed, but of course wary.
If I already owe him, why would he warn me further the master mused quietly to himself.

Seeing Andolin get up and laughed, he gave a small chuckle to, "Well sir, I will have talk with her, and see if I can make her understand what her duties are, after all a return to the guild is not", he paused for a moment looking for the right word, "Advisable at this time".

He nodded to Andolin, "I will have that meeting with her that you have graciously arranged, and perhaps some useful information may be imparted".

Waiting for a flicker to ensure Andolin understood his acceptance for the late night meeting he then continued, "I have other duties to attend to Protocol Master, may the rest of your evening be good".

With a small bow Larbeido walked away his mind racing, So he plans to meet me alone in a carriage, precautions are needed I think. With a plan forming in his mind, he strode off to see an old friend whom would give the help he needed.
Keerah

Post by Keerah »

Keerah loved dancing and was happy that the room's atmosphere had relaxed a bit - she knew it was because the Caesar and his Lady had departed, but felt some regret that they could not also enjoy a simple evening of dancing and friendly conversation. On second thought, she wondered if either of them had EVER had just a simple evening... and if so, they had probably been bored! Oh well, Keerah was a simple girl and the simple pleasure of life were quite enough for her.

She chatted softly with Abnor as they danced, noting various couples departing - especially Vanir once more on a quest for Pan, she supposed! She looked for Elaine as she wanted to congratulate the blind poet, but she seemed in an intense conversation with the man Adrian so chose not to interrupt.

"Well, my dear Abnor, what do you think of this evening's happenings? I have quite enjoyed myself! Do you think Cinnamon is ok at home alone? I'll take her on an extra-long walk tomorrow for neglecting her this evening. Do you have more meetings tomorrow? Or, something more exciting in your plans perhaps?" she teased him with a twinkle in her eyes.

Ulder stood at his post and continued to watch the crowd. The mood of the room had changed significantly after the departure of the Caesar and his bride to be, growing much more relaxed and informal.

He watched the room as a whole, paying special attention to the comings and goings of the guests as they went out into the night and later returned. Several were dancing and he watched the winner of the poetry contest dance with a gentleman that escorted Lady Hamilton to the event. Intently curious and somewhat mesmerized by her, he stared at the dancing couple, watching them twirl and shift to the music. He caught himself and resumed his scan of the crowd.

Spotting Lord Andolin, it reminded him of a task that he needed to complete. He left the room for a brief few moments, and returned carrying Lord Andolin's weapon, which he had confiscated earlier in the evening as the guests began to arrive.

He approached the Master of Protocol after his conversation with the Guildmaster, intent on returning the man's possession.

"Lord Andolin? As the Caesar and his betrothed have retired for the evening, I see no reason that you should be without this any longer.

On behalf of the Purple Guard, I thank you for you cooperation in this matter. Is there anything that I can be of assistance with?"

Andolin thanked Ulder for returning his saber, eager to return it to his waist. "Thank you. Yes, I would like to speak to you of that stranger that appeared, but it is getting late. Perhaps we can speak on the morrow?" He needed to see about Kitya's family and did not have time to tarry. He had delivered his message to Larbeido and he still had meetings to maintain with Elaine and Barracus. Thus, his conversation with Ulder could wait. He planned to cultivate the man for later use.

OOC~ Ulder, careful of a time knot. Andi does not know yet that he has another reason to visit Ulder on the morrow. I have already started a thread where Andi goes to find him.

Larbeido, please note my edit to my last post, to avoid a time knot.

Sweeping Keerah in a wide circle around him, part of the steps of the formal dance, his eyes never left hers. Drawing her back in towards himself, he nodded.

"It has been most interesting though I am not sure how... encouraging. Would you say that the royal couple actually like one another? Or perhaps it doesn't matter when you are the ruler of something and it is arranged for you? Still..." his voice trailed off as he led Keerah in another wide arch on the other side.

"As long as you have enjoyed yourself my dear, that is all that matters to me," he whispered as he drew her back in. "I am certain that Cinnamon is fine though I am sure she misses you. As for tomorrow, Elnath has mentioned something up, but not until later in the day. I thought we would work on some magic lesson in the morn," he drew her through another set of circles, ending up face to face once again.

"Was there something special you wanted to do?" he asked softly as the dance came to an end.

Fuming inwardly, the redhead put on a formal smile, unable to express her true feelings to her mother at this time lest she make a scene. Seated beside Bertram, she avoided his gaze and nodded, obviously fake smile plastered on her face.

"I am quite certain you did," she remarked cooly to his comments about missing her. If only he wasn't so intent on making this difficult. Watching as Andolin made his way out of the room, she turned towards her escort and arched a brow.

"Whatever do you mean, Lord Chomberg?" she asked frostily. "Lord Azarin's position at court demands that he oversee things here. He hasn't the liberty to just sit and be entertained. He managed to pull this whole affair together in a short space of time as I understand it. I think he should be commended. There are not many who could have accomplished so much and done so well," she smiled sweetly, lavishing praise on the Master of Protocol.

"And a lady's man? How have you come up with such a judgement?" she laughed lightly. "I've seen him do nothing but circulate to talk with guests and deal with the business at hand. Surely you aren't saying that because he asked to dance with me?" she asked softly, feigning innocence.

"The poems were passable. I dare say an official court poet would have done better but for some reason the court thought bringing commoners into the dinner and having them entertain would endear the people to the Caesar and his new bride. I don't know that will be true, but I suppose it was a nice idea. Oh look, there is Ygraine," she gave a plastic smile and raised her hand in greeting to the other woman across the way.

"Are you not bored with the dinner yet, m'lord?" she asked, eyes still scanning the crowds.
Barracus

Post by Barracus »

No sooner had Larbeido began to move away than he was stopped by the tall and imposing man from World's Mouth, eyes lit with an inner fire, face cheerful and uncharacteristically bright. Barracus was not one to take to mirth or even contentment lightly, but in this case he wore a smile that neatly split his face in two, white teeth flashing dazzlingly. Dressed all in black and quite respectably tall, he doubtless commanded quite a bit of respect, even on sight- and many might presume him a noble, though he was in fact only an aide to one- a darken star set just beneath the glittering firmament. Whatever- Barracus had more important things on his mind just now than his own nobility or lack thereof.

Gripping the retreating Guildmaster's arm, he drew back, causing the man to turn to face him directly. "Master Larbeido," Analiver Barracus began, his smile still present, though the tint was more toward confidence and winningness than toward any real enjoyment. "I trust I find you well," it was a formality to be sure, but they must always be dispensed with. Awaiting the appropriate response, the dark-haired aide would continue. "I wished to speak to you regarding the contract of one of your Rose students, a miss... Zhavon Mikhalrian?" His tone was specific but only vaguely interested- it would not due to show improper interest. That might affect the price, in theory. Better always to be formal and courteous.

"I wish to purchase the young woman's contract at the earliest convenience. I am aware, as so many are, of the pressures your Guild faces," he continued sympathetically. "However, I do think that I can protect this woman from any such problems. "However, my name is possessed to much wealth and influence- and can most certainly shelter the girl beneath its cover. Especially given my ties to powerful foreign governments." It wasn't a stretch, either- any individual who had experienced Barracus's true talents would not doubt any of it for a flicker- he was capable of silencing dissonants without anyone even knowing that it had been done. That was why Marius de Winter trusted him with important tasks- and that was why he knew that Master Darvino would most assuredly sell the contract.

"What say you?" Offering a nod and a cock of his head, he awaited the man's response. Or rather, awaited the inevitable agreement that must follow. After all, the Count de Bessnie and the Lord Varesh had each acquired a Rose recently. Should Barracus be denied, it would be both unfair and most unpleasant. Perhaps even for Larbeido.

Larbeido looked at the man, and then at the grip he had on his arm.
"Well, I am well enough, if that is any of your business", as he spoke he removed the mans hand from his arm, listening to what he had to say further.

Larbeido was annoyed at the way he had been accosted by the man, and took an instant dislike to him, however money and somewhere for his guild people to be tempered his ire.

"Zhavon you say? Well she is supposed to be working for the protocol Master, but he does not own her, that indenture is still with the guild".

He looked at Barracus closely, although he had taken a dislike to the main, he could see the offer was a genuine one.
He mused and then a small grin came to him, How much does he want her, I wonder.
"Thirty crowns, and the indenture is yours, I will have it drawn up and delivered to you on the morrow".

He paused for a flicker, "Is that acceptable"?

As Barracus approached Master Larbeido, Andolin's eyes narrowed, wondering what Marius' creature was doing. Meddling in something no doubt Taking his leave from Ulder, the Master of Protocol moved over to the Redault family, giving a side glance to Kitya as he moved by.

Walking confidently up to her parents, Andolin uttered, "Milord, milady, I do hope you enjoyed the dinner and the entertainment. I know that Caesar wanted all to have an entertaining time." He hoped that Kitya would take the cue to introduce her parents to him. He was sorely tempted to use his mind reading magic, but he recalled that Amchi had taught her father some magic, so it was best to not run the risk. After all, Kitya would tell him all later.

Bertram smiled at Kitlanya, "Well I think it best to wait for your parents do you not think. We could have a dance if you wish"?

Bertram then noticed Andolin approach Kitlanya's parents, with a smile at Kitlanya, "Come my dear, perhaps we should Introduce The protocol Master to your parents", with that he stood and held his arm out to her, knowing she would not cause a scene in front of her parents.

Keerah twirled on the dance floor, enjoying the feeling of Abnor's arms around her.

She spoke to him. considering a moment, "Well, I do think the royal couple respect each other. Their esteem could grow into love I think - but they have a difficult path ahead. It could either draw them together or push them apart. At least, that is what I think. But, who knows!..."

Viewing the laughing, chattering couples around them, Keerah grinned at Abnor once more, "This is fun! But, not something I would want to do every day I think. It will be nice to have a lesson tomorrow and take Cinnamon for a walk. I'll probably need to go to the market sometime to restock the kitchen.... So, what will the next lesson be?" she queried, to her partner and teacher.

For days she had anticipated this moment full of anxious thoughts and plans as to how she would introduce Andolin to her father so that he would take notice of the young man and see him in a favorable light. With only a handful of words, her escort had turned all her plans upside down. It hadn't taken a mind reader to perceive what could only be counted as jealousy in Bertram and given his rude response to the Master of Protocol's request to dance, she would not put it past him to do something malicious to Andolin in front of her father. That would not do, she fumed inwardly and taking her escort's arm, she nudged him towards the dance floor.

"I would love a dance milord," she replied softly, tugging him away from her parents and Andolin. He would have to introduce himself, though he was perfectly capable of that. Still, she chewed her bottom lip, fretting and angry that this lout had managed to ruin what was supposed to be the perfect evening. She could only hope that Andolin would understand.

Standing, Lord Redault reached out a hand in greeting to Andolin.

"The evening seems to have been very well done milord," he nodded. "It was long enough to honor the Caesar and his new bride without being tiresome or overbearing, all in all a splendid evening wouldn't you say so my dear?" he turned to his petite redheaded wife sitting next to him. Beaming a smile that was an easy match to Kitya's, she nodded affably.

"Oh certainly," she agreed. "Though the royal couple were a touch too reserved for my tastes, I suppose ones in their position must observe a higher set of protocols. You must be Lord Azarin, the new Protocol Master we've heard such bright reports of?" she purred as she nudged her husband before extending her hand without rising from her seat.

"Oh!" the gentleman coughed softly and smiled, "Allow me to introduce my lovely wife, Charlayne Redault. I am of course Aldric Redault," he announced casually.

"You've done well to land yourself in such a trusted spot next to his highness. I understand that you are newly arrived to the island. What did you do previously milord Azarin?"

Maintaining a flattering smile throughout their comments about the dinner, Andolin acted as if he were pleased to hear their critique. Upon Lady Redault's introduction, the Master of Protocol bent to kiss her hand formally in greeting. "Enchanted," he uttered politely

As Aldric asked him of his background, Andolin knew that such a line of inquiry would not be a good one, so he went with the plan he had engineered from the start.

"Redault?" He acted if he were surprised by the name and then turned to Charlayne and uttered, "I met a Kitlanya Redault at a ball recently and saw her again this evening." In a light mood he added "and you must be her sister." He hoped that it would draw a laugh from her mother.

"The Lady Kitlanya consented to a dance at the ball, but it was rudely interrupted by another before we had a chance to finish," he confided sadly. "I had hoped to finish the dance one day. She is such a lovely young lady." Then looking as if the thought had suddenly come upon him, he remarked, "perhaps tonight I might be favored .... but only if I had your permission of course."

His tone was formal and polite, as one should have with a lady's parents. He almost laughed at the thought of asking permission. He must seem the especially proper gentleman ... just the right type to be entrusted with their daughter.

Lovely green eyes sparkled in delight as the lady smiled at his obvious attempt to ingratiate himself. A handsome young man, he carried himself well and the lady would lay odds that he didn't have much trouble endearing himself to most anyone.

"You've met our Kitya? Odd that she didn't mention you. She usually droans on at length about the boring young men she is forced to endure at these functions," the woman offered, studying Anodlin's reactions, his face and eyes. Settling himself next to his wife, Lord Redault raised a brow first at her then at the young man as he asked permission for a dance.

"By the Light, you'll have to take that up with her," he chuckled. "Much like her mother, Kit has a mind of her own. I don't know that milord Chomberg is going to leave much opportunity for anyone else to entertain my daughter however. We've been talking marriage," the gentleman announced almost proudly.

"Now Aldric, nothing is signed yet," she reminded him as she turned to see where Bertram and Kitya had gone to. Her few moments escorting her daughter back to her seat had been enough for Charlayne to pick up her daughter's ire at having been "saddled" with this man as she had put it. While her husband thought Bertram the perfect match for his daughter, she was fairly certain that the gentleman only saw dollar signs. Her own marriage had been arranged, but not strictly for profit. Her parents had endeavored to find someone that would prove a good match for her and had done admirably and it had been her hope to do the same for her daughters. With the oldest, she felt they had managed. Kitya had proved more difficult to find a suitable match. For years, the parents had allowed the redhead to chase off potential suitors, often before she had really gotten to know them, complaining that they were empty headed fools.

"I see no harm in the young man engaging in one dance with your daughter sir," she smiled, placing a hand on his arm softly. "But you didn't tell us about yourself, milord Azarin," she pressed the earlier question. "New faces are always exciting to learn about."

"Yes, I have had the privilege of the acquaintance of your daughter," he replied smoothly. "I shall ask her when she returns." He looked her way.

"The lord she is with ... I hope he makes her happy, for she seems more special than other ladies of court ... so full of life and a worthy mind," he flattered. "One would not wish to team a spirited mare with just any packhorse. This lord she is with ... does he have Imperial favor? Does he stand at the right hand of Caesar? Perhaps he has fought at the side of Caesar ... or dwells in a grand house close to the palace?" In asking such questions, he was making many none-too-subtle points. Now, he had to draw them in further.

"As for the Azarin family, milady," he turned back to her mother. "It is a tale to be told in front of a fire, with a fine glass of brandy. It is a tale of heroes, adventure, intrigue and mystery. I would tell you why the Griffin is is our crest. I would tell you of the father I never knew ... the 12th Duc Azarin of World's Mouth. Yet, this crowded surrounding does not lend itself to the comfort that such a story requires. Perhaps I could coax you both to be my guests at the grand home provided me by Caesar, just outside the palace." With a triumphant grin, he had made his point indirectly, but obviously, to clever persons such as her parents. Hopefully he had charmed her mother with the promise of an interesting tale. His voice had been meant to sound like a bard's.

Yet, protocol would likely require them to invite him to their home, rather than accept an invitation to come to the home of a single gentleman. If they were clever, they would also see that the dullard Bertram offered nothing compared to what stood before them.

For a moment Bertram was puzzled at Kit wanting to dance, then he realised,ah, she does not want me to interfere between Andolin and her Parents, very well.
"Of course Kit, How could I refuse a dance with yourself".
With that he put his arms around her and whisked her onto the floor. Bertram was not an expert dance my any means, but he had been taught by excellent teachers and had been to enough court functions to do a more than adequate job of guiding Kit around the floor.
For the first burn or two Bertram thought carefully, he had figured a few things out, and knew he was not totaly safe with the acceptance of her parents agreeing to his marriage, the slump he felt when he thought of that told him one thing, he had fallen in love with Kit. Further he knew that even if they did arrange the marriage, Kit would not be happy and oppose him every mark, every day. There was only one thing left he could think of.

He move a little close in the dancing and whispered in her ear...
"Kit, I know you think little of me, and I suppose I cannot blame you. I am quiet steady, even boring at times. However", his voice faulted a little, "However despite the originally reasons why I agreed to this, I now realise I have indeed fallen in love with you. You may not like that, but it is the truth". He kept a tight hold of her, not wanting her to pull away, as she may want to do herself, "please hear me out. I know you want
Andolin, it is that obvious. I presuming though you do not think your parents think he is right for you. That may be true, or not who knows, however I have a proposal for you. If your parents agree to me marrying you, and you dutifully obey, I will give you free reign to do what and see whom you wish during any day, without malice or jealously, as long as you promise that each evening you will be home, and with me, until the morning".
He was silent for a few flickers, "I am not what is considered a very rich man, yet you will not want for anything, I will give you a considerable allowance".
With that he fell silent completely, wondering at how Kitlanya would take the proposal. I'll be walking out with the Redaults or on my own, well at least I will know where I stand.
