Pax: After the introductions [Jygust 30th MT]

Post by Fung Wei Kayko »

(mezz! also..this post is from the thread before https://tazlure.nl/board/viewtopic.php?t=15797
)

Kayko smiled as the gnome accepted her invitation. This was good, she could use some company other than ting for a change, and he liked tea.
It was after the acceptance, however, that she noticed he was looking back at the guard whom had been the one with which he had such an interesting conversation with, ending in a short flight. She could only guess his thoughts, and while she was likely to enjoy her new friend, she saw him as just a bit of a fool.

Then it was that the gnome had turned back to her and held out his hand. Kayko had learned during her travels that this was a handshake, and a custom before introductory. She had to learn in on her travels, her home country never used it, and her aunt certaintly would not teach her such things, or never thought of it.

So, she held out her own hand and grasped his. Surprisingly, her hands would have small calases on them, the consequnce of practicing with the sword that was strapped to her waist with a seafoam green sash which went well with her dark blue dress. As he gave her his first name, full name, and home land..so would she, though it always felt a little odd that she should give her name and then her family name..as it was always different than that of the westerners.

"Nice to meet you Mezz. I am Kayko. Fung Wei Kayko...from the Eastern Empire"

She gave a light squeeze to finalize their introductions and then let go.
Any questions she would answer, as they were expected.

"Shall we get started?"

She would ask at the end of it all, and then enter the town, ending up next to Ting.

Mezz smile broadened,

"From the Eastern Empire? Myslirious place I've heard...no, wait, it's 'mysterious' isn't it? What's it like there? I imagine it's much different than here, or the Seven Isles. Can I just ask," he didn't wait for an answer,

"why did you put your surname before your first name? Is it an Eastern tradition?"

He walked with the young woman up to Ting, giving the equine a friendly pat on the side. The gnome was shorter than the donkey and Mezz prayed to the Father that it was about to attack him for patting it,

"Anyway, where are you setting up?"

She could see it coming as his grin broadened.

Then, just as expected...questions, questions, and more questions.

"Yes it is mysterious. Yes, it is different then here or the seven isles. However in a way it is the same...in the way that it's different depending on where you go. We have lots of mountains and forests so large and full of many. We have volcanoes and hotsprings too..and many fires. But fire is ok, because the life always comes back. And those are just memories from my childhood, my friend. "

She paused.she had another question to answer, "And yes..that is how we introduce ourselves. We also bow a certain way...but maybe I can show you that later"

She smiled when she said that..right now might not be the appropriate time to teach someone a bow from a forein land.

Ting, being pet, turned his head to see who was petting him. Then he gave him a gentle nudge with his nose. It was odd for him to see someone smaller than he was.

Kayko smiled. "I think he likes you...or is very interested"

"as for where to start..I was thinking of setting up on the festival field. I can watch the activities then. But the guard said i need to find someplace called the provast's office..." she paused with a slight frown as she watched the buzzing people move within the town. "which i have no idea..where that is"

Mezz listened eagerly as Kayko answered his plethora of questions. He was about to ask another when he felt something nuzzling him. The Gnome looked round, it was the donkey,

"I think he likes you...or is very interested"

He nodded, to his knowledge, there wasn't any Gnomes in the Eastern Empire, so the equine would probably be curious about someone that was actually smaller than itself. Then again, he didn't know much about the Eastern Empire at all. He gave the donkey another friendly pat, his earlier fears dispelled by the animal's simple nudge.

"as for where to start..I was thinking of setting up on the festival field. I can watch the activities then. But the guard said i need to find someplace called the provast's office...which i have no idea..where that is"

The bearded gnome held his hands up in resignation,

"Ah, that I don't know. I did hear someone...erm, saying...no...mentioning the place on my way here from Brie, but I wasn't really paying attention. I think he said it was next to the...Bortal?"

Bortal...

" The Portal? Well, that should make it alot easier.."

Giving Ting a gentle tap on the rump to get him moving, Kayko silently moved further into the town, looking for said portal. She didn't need to look very long and hard...the thing was huge, for a portal.

"Well..I see the portal.."

She said as she stopped Ting.. She quietly scanned the area for the Provost's office.

Mezz gawped at the portal, it was huge, especially since he himself saw things larger than others, being a 2' Gnome. It made a harsh contrast between the simple wooden building surrounding it. He looked round for the Provost's Office,

"Ah, I think that's the Office my friend,"

the Gnome said as he pointed out a building, wooden like all others in Pax, and perhaps slightly larger. But there was no mistaking the guard sitting at the desk that stood on a veranda before the building.

The Provost Office: Centre of operations, and located directly next to Pax Balthasar's portal, the Provost Office deals not only with the incoming and outgoing traffic of Pax (though at the moment it leans more heavily on incoming), but also with the allocation of homes to the new citizens, the allotment of food supplies, and as a base of operations for the Provost Marshall. Despite it's importance, the building itself is rather unimpressive. Larger than the other wooden buildings, but not by a great deal, it looks rapidly constructed with an eye to speed and practicality rather than design or taste. It has two stories, and a wide veranda on which is parked a desk, and usually a soldier of the Pax Honestus right behind it - made strikingly visible against the dark wood in a royal blue uniform.

"Ah, I think that's the Office my friend,"

Kayko looked at him and followed his pointing finger. Well, there was a guard there so..it should be what she was looking for.

"well, lets see if we can't get some help."

She gave ting another pat, and directed him in the direction of the office.

When they got there, she would stop in front of the guard. She wasn't sure if you had to stop and ask permission to enter from every guard thatyou saw..but she's learned that it's generally better if you do. Less hassle that way. "Could we see the provost?"

“The Provost is busy today with the festival,” explained the guard, a tall bearded fellow with swarthy skin. “However, if you are new arrivals and want a pitch for the festival, please go through. The Provost’s assistant will deal with you. If you want to apply for some land, you’ll have to return tomorrow.” He indicated the open door to the office which was guarded by a second sour-faced guard who leant against the side of the door.

The second guard stood aside ready to escort Mezz and Kayko into the office.

Inside, a wide hallway led off to a pair of small offices, a record room, and a back room with a sturdy, locked door in which supplies and food are kept. A very basic wooden staircase rose to the upper floor of the building. One tatty rug - apparently hauled all the way from World's Mouth through mud and fields by its condition - graced the floor of the hallway downstairs in a vain attempt the make the building appear lived in and inviting. One of the doors was open and the guard indicated that the pair of new arrivals could enter.

The Provost’s room proved to be a simple, plain and functional office containing a small desk and a pair of chairs. Sat behind the desk was small man of around thirty yahren. He glanced upwards at the new arrivals. “Can I be of assistance,” he ventured in a silky smooth voice.

Kayko ventured to let her eyes wander the room for a moment. She quickly formed an opiion but keopt it to herself and left room for added information in case things really weren't as they seem.

“Can I be of assistance,”

She quickly turned her attention to him. "Maybe you can..sir. My friend and I came to town for the festival, and found ourselves in need to bother you for a place to stay..?"

She kept her voice soft and respectful..she was respectful, as she saw no reason for this man to have lost her respect for him..and surely he must be busy and in a tough spot with the refugees and the festival coming..and who knows what else..

The man behind the desk treated Kayko to a pleasant smile but spread his arms wide. “Until recently it would have been easy to find you a vacant piece of land or house but things are not so simple now. We have had a new influx of refugees, many of whom are camped outside the town walls and most accommodation in town is taken by those who are attending the festival.”

“If you just require a room, you may find the Father’s Grace Tavern your best bet as the gnomes there have added some rooms recently,” continued the assistant in a friendly manner. Then, as if something had suddenly occurred to him, he pursed his lips. “There is also some rather unusual accommodation available for those who are not of a nervous disposition.”

“Can I be of assistance,”

Mezz muttered, 'only if you insist.' under his breath. He instantly did not like the man, while his silky voice may have put others at ease, it made Mezz think of a snake, worming himself into people confidence with false kindness.

“If you just require a room, you may find the Father’s Grace Tavern your best bet as the gnomes there have added some rooms recently. There is also some rather unusual accommodation available for those who are not of a nervous disposition.”

Mezz cocked his head to one side,

"Unusual?" he asked curiously,
"Unusual as in you're woken up in the middle of Gravetide by a demonic cow asking you if you want something to drink?" the Gnome gave a flicker of a smile,
"Or unusual as in it's held by a crazy old crone?"

Kayko could not believe what she was hearing. But it wasn't something that made her mad..infact her moved her hand to cover her mouth and to keep her from laughing out loud, and she wondered...where did he come up with that?

After she calmed herself down she would turned her attention to the provost. "May I ask what is unusual about it sir? Just out of curiousity"

The assistant treated the gnome to a condescending smile. “I am afraid we are out of houses with demonic cows or crazy crones at present. There has been much demand of late. If these are your requirements, then you will have to wait. ”

“As to what is unusual. Well, as you may know, we had a number of earth tremors here during the winter. Some of these tremors opened holes and gashes in the ground. This particular home was not damaged but is located on the edge of one such chasm. It has been fenced off, of course, but it has tended to put off those seeking accommodation. “The smooth assistant paused for a flicker, beaming a wide smile at the two companions.

“Still, if you are used to dealing with possessed bovines, then a little chasm should be of no concern. Would you like to take the house? There are two bedrooms and the rent is modest given its location.”

“I am afraid we are out of houses with demonic cows or crazy crones at present. There has been much demand of late. If these are your requirements, then you will have to wait.”

Mezz briefly wondered what kind of person would actually want to be woken by a demonic cow in the middle of Gravetide. Things were certainly different her than back home in Dort. No doubt the snivelling assistant was trying to work his way around contradicting the Gnome, despite the fact it had been a simple joke. It made him dislike the man even more.

“As to what is unusual. Well, as you may know, we had a number of earth tremors here during the winter. Some of these tremors opened holes and gashes in the ground. A house on the end of a yawning chasm? If Mezz hadn't been so excited by the idea then he might of wondered whether the Provost's assistant was purposely trying to put them in dangerous situations. The small being gave a grin,

"Possessed cows or not, it sound pretty exciting. Where is this home?" he stopped for a second before adding, out of politeness,
"If you wouldn't mind my asking."

Kayko gently smiled at the light jabs the two were having at each other.

But now she had to think about if she wanted to stay at this interesting place that the provost had brought up.

“As to what is unusual. Well, as you may know, we had a number of earth tremors here during the winter. Some of these tremors opened holes and gashes in the ground. it's located on the edge of..

Now kayko had something to really think about. There were several tremmers here..and the house was on the edge.. but there hadn't been a tremmer in months apparently..but maybe there could be one...

"Possessed cows or not, it sound pretty exciting. Where is this home? If you wouldn't mind my asking."

Weell, Well...her new friend seemed NOT with a nervous disposition. That certainly would probably effect her choice..but for now Kayko decided to remain silent and see where this goes..

“The house is in the south eastern area of the town, on the edge of the main residential district. You can’t miss it; it has a red door and…well, its on the edge of a chasm.” The assistant smiled brightly as if he was enjoying the conversation. He fumbled inside a drawer and produced a large key which he placed on the table.

“If you wish, you may borrow the key and examine the accommodation. If you want to take it we can discuss the rental at a later stage. Is there anything more you wish to discuss?"
