Visitors from the Mouth (Jygust 32nd MT)

Post by Morg »

The atmosphere in the Citadel anteroom was one of thinly veiled hostility. Piero Octavio, with his father's help, had been planning his trip to the Citadel for weeks. He and his sister had travelled in style aboard the light airship the Madrigal, with a Condotierre escort, and their arrival from the air had raised the usual oohs of admiration from the locals. It had all been going so well - until he'd reached the palace and found that Councilor Guillaume Indigo, the representative of Magister Gabrielli, had travelled through the portal from the Mouth and arrived a mere few burns before him.

It was a fact known to few, but a secret war was brewing in World's Mouth. The destruction of the Espresso Syndicate had drastically shifted the balance of power, and no new Magisters had yet been elected. Initially Gabrielli and Octavio had acted together to restore stability to the city, but once that stability had been achieved, the two charismatic Magisters had gradually begun seeking to solidify their own position by undermining that of the other. The rivalry wasn't an overt one, but to those in the know it was a fierce one.

So Magister Octavio's son and heir could only sit on the opposite side of the room from his rival, seething inwardly and wondering which party the Caesar would receive first. He gripped his sister's hand reassuringly, although in truth Lavonne Octavio seemed a lot less bothered by the situation than he was. His blue-and-silver Condotierre escorts glanced uneasily at the two stern black-armoured Tunairre who flanked Indigo. The Councilor himself gave the appearance of being highly amused by the situation, but that was only because he was good at controlling his emotions in traditional Mouthie style. In truth he was just as thrown by the appearance of his rival as the other man.

Both parties knew why the other was there: to solicit the Caesar's support. It was a matter that couldn't be left to the Office of Foreign Affairs and its ambassador Lo Russo, simply because she wasn't yet partisan enough. As far as anyone knew, the Lo Russos had yet to commit themselves to supporting either Gabrielli or Octavio. As a result, the two parties had eschewed traditional diplomatic channels and each sent their own representatives.

Of the nobles who had also approached Andolin with an appeal, there was as yet no sign.
