The lady smiled at Stahl, rather pleased at how polite and friendly he seemed - indeed, his very nervousness spoke highly of him. She'd seen a good number of surly, grumpy, and even angry refugees arrive at the little town of Pax, and while she couldn't blame them for feeling a little resentful at their treatment, she had less patience when they took it out on her. But this dwarf had the manners of a nervous child and the charm of a teenage suitor - and in a way, it was rather adorable. Very pleasant change from the usually lot she had to deal with.

"Oh, yes, that would be absolutely fine, my dear. I'll make sure no-one walks off with your supplies, don't you worry." She offered him an encouraging smile, wishing that all new arrivals could be so nice. "Do come back if you have any questions at all, and I'll try to help, okay?"

OOC: wonderful. I think we're done here. Have fun, Stahl! ;)

Relieved that the lady of good fortune smiled on him, and the lady Provost as well, Stahl mouthed his gratitude. "Thank you very much. I really appreciate the effort." With a beaming smile that exposed not only his healthy teeth but his gums as well, he assured the very helpful lady that he would return to her if any questions should arise.

Knowing that the nice woman had a lot on her hands he quickly bundled up his meagre belongings and made his way towards the hole of the door. The screeching and creaking of his armour hadn't diminished at all. Thanks to his restored good humour, it now sounded like no more than a soft - albeit annoying - whisper. As Stahl'Or once more crossed the threshold of the Provost Office his rather squarish figure blotted out half of the light from the doorway, than he was gone off to see someone about a tent.

(Thanks for the nice welcome. Just keep an eye out for me at the shop! And fun I WILL have, don't you worry.)

Mercury arrives at Pax

Post by Mercury »

It had been a couple of weeks since Mercury left his home in the outskirts of Murrelbuck. The walk had been mostly pleasant and he was able to trap or hunt down small game as he walked along his path. He had taken his time observing different plant and animal life along his way. Shelter was easy to come by as well, there was always a large tree or out cropping of rock to shelter from the rain when necessary. Mother was definitely shining grace down on him during this trip.

His family was concerned for him traipsing off to a new city even if it was one that was being set up and welcomed non-humans and was tolerant of all religions. Mercury had had it in the back of his mind for years that he wanted to study “the power in things” at World’s Mouth where such teachings were known to be found. But since the Exemption Licenses and the religious intolerance being shown to non-Oneists, that path has looked less and less attractive. The creation of Pax seemed like a good second plan. It would be a much smaller town in the forest, much more appealing as Halfling surroundings. In addition the highly political nature of the Magic schools, were he would most likely find someone to teach him what he wanted, would not likely exist. Mercury still had a problem thinking of what he wanted to learn as “magick,” better to think of it as power provided by The Lady for those who wanted to learn how to use it. Surely some of those moving to Pax will have some of this knowledge. Maybe there is a school being set up there from the displaced folks.

Meanwhile, the ability of having a plot of land and his skills as a cook and baker should be able to get him by and pay the bills while he sought out a teacher. Everyplace must have a kitchen of some sort. A new town is always looking for good workers and if they already have a master baker or cook, I can always sign on as apprentice and still have time for my studies after.

"Walking sure builds up an appetite," he said to himself remembering the rabbit he ate for lunch, and thinking it would be a good time for a midday snack. He was in good spirits that morning as he entered the valley but they had started to fade slightly as the town came into sight and was not as welcoming a sight as he had envisioned. He was looking at the areas outside of the wall being put up for potential sites for his hovel; the thought of living directly in town still did not sit well with him.

I wonder who I need to talk to claim my little bit of land he thought to himself. "I think I will look around for a good piece to claim now so if asked I can have a direct answer. It will also give me a chance to meet some of people here." With that he said a few blessings to Mother and headed toward Pax area to search the nearby woods and small hills for a good home location.

Hazel eyes followed Mercury spotted outside of Pax's walls. What is a halfling doing running around on the outside of the town? He thought to himself as he indicated to another guard that he would be away from his post to check up on something as his head tilted towards the halfling that seemed to be looking for something.

It was not like this soldier to sprint after the little halfling and even though the halfling might have had a headstart, Danyon's legs were set to a brisk stride. He knew his duty and concern had drawn his features into a worried frown, but it was his job to know why the little halfling was running around outside of town.

"Hail!" Danyon called out to get the dark haired halfling's attention as he waved towards Mercury. The soldier would not rush up to the halfling, instead he would wait until he got Mercury's attention before heading directly towards him. It was not his intention to scare the newcomer.

Mercury had been outside of the walls looking for a suitable place for his hovel. He was debating on two particular sights when he heard the hail coming from behind him and turned to see the soldier approaching him. The townsman approached quickly making Mercury wonder why the great hurry; but his waving made him appear friendly.

"Hail to you as well," he said waving back. The soldier had the appearance of one who had been in the city for at least a little while. As the soldier approached he added, "Can you tell me who I need to speak to about acquiring a parcel? I've seen a few that might do me well."

Despite the somberness of the walled city with in sight, there were a couple of places that might make a good home. Mercury wiped his hand on his permanently dishevelled shirt attempting to straighten it an look presentable. He blew back his curly black hair that was hanging partly in his eyes and waited expectantly.

Safety of the walls, this place is dangerous without the safety of the walls...

"Aye, I can, but you shouldn't be wandering out here." He didn't quite understand what the little halfling meant by a parcel but most people came here with the promise of free land to start their new life. "You would be able to receive your parcel of land at the Provost office, but first they will give you a slight bit of paper work. It'll all work out if you follow me." A warm, encouraging smile was given to Mercury as he let the halfling decide what to do next.

The guard appeared a little nervous being outside the walls. Mercury had not seen anything up to this point to warrant such concern. The guards behavior made him feel a bit apprehensive. This feeling was in conflict with the feeling he was receiving from the walled city. He put on his best pleasant face, hoping that it did not look to fake, and said,

"Yes I suppose there would be a bit of paperwork involved. But first, could you point me to where other halflings might be staying. I would like to see if I have any friends or family in the area." He didn't want to tell the guard that he just wanted to talk to some of his own people to get a feel for the area and opportunities that may be available here. Also, it may be necessary to find someone that was more well versed in human language if there were documents to be reviewed.

"That wall is very impressive, how big is this city anyhow?" Mercury added while walking up to the soldier and taking a good look at the fence. "Never been one much for the city life. But I guess I can at least get a good meal." His nervousness of heading to the city of Pax was evident in his continuous banter.

The forest always gave Danyon the creeps, but perhaps he was naturally a jumpy sort of fellow. The smile from the halfling did seem to make him smile in return and then nodded, "Yes, once you have answered some questions and picked out your land, all should be well."

The soldier scratched his head and looked quizzically at the halfling. "As for any friends, family or just looking for halflings in general, that can all be taken care of inside of Pax."

Hazel eyes looked up at the walls of Pax Balthasar. The walls were huge and curved conveying a complex design that seemed out of place in this otherwise simple and developing town. The wall looked to have been constructed yahren back, moss and vines flourished on its rain-worn stones with grass and small, clinging flowers nestled in the myriad of cracks in the mighty wall.

A soft chuckle came from the soldier as he shook his head, "Well, as curious as you seem, I would think you would like to explore Pax on your own." The smile was warm and good-natured as the halfling walked beside Mercury. "As for a good meal, I would think some of the ladies at the local tavern, Nether's Gate, might fix you up with a meal and perhaps all the information you wish."

Even with the speed of the banter, Danyon kept up with it, and he seemed to answer whenever it was needed until they got to the entrance. "After you..." He said encouragingly. The other guard looked at the two that had approached and looked on nonchalantly. A nod was given in greeting to the halfling and his brother in arms but then continued to look maintaining his post.

Mercury examined the walls as they approached the city. It was strange for such a newly developed city to have walls that looked this aged. Maybe they are using and older structure for the new town. Seems that someone would have mentioned it by its older name if that were the case he said to himself. The walls looked climbable with its cracks and twists and turns and vine covered structures. The idea of there always being a way out of the city appealed to the little halfling who was still very wary of being in a big city.

He held polite conversation with the guard as they approached the gate. He seems friendly enough but superficially so, Mercury thought, sort of a undercurrent of standoffishness. It seemed to Mercury that the guards primary focus was to get him inside the walls and be rid of him as soon as possible.

"Nether's Gate? hmm, could you point me in that direction. I would like to get something in my belly before I do much more exploring. Walking sure creates an appetite. Also if you could show me wich is the Provost office that would be a big help as well." Mercury's nervous banter continued as they entered the city.

"Of course, I can point you towards the Inn!" The escort grinned amiably. As the little halfling entered Pax the guard walked beside Mercury had sighed softly and felt a bit more relaxed as he headed towards a shabby, two-story wooden building with a newly painted sign that indicated that it was the Provost Office. The Provost Office had a short veranda out front with a door that lead to where the Provost Marshall and the staff were found hard at work. "Ah here we are! Well it is highly recommended to sign in first. They will take good care of you. Register, get your plot of land and food to start you off then you are on your way."

He waited on the veranda and opened the door to the Provost office for Mercury. "I'll be waiting right outside for you." It was way beyond his duty to do so, but he had made a sort of promise and he wanted to at least try to keep it.

This is all going very fast, thought Mercury. He had not know many other "guards" but he assumed that "Highly recommended" meant required.

"Thanks for your help," he said to the waiting guard, and proceeded through the door.

He was not to certain about having to come here first though. Getting a plot of land sight unseen did not seem all that smart. Many thoughts were going through his mind as he entered the office. What if it were in the middle of this city? I don't know if I could live amongst all that commotion OR a property without trees. I have to have shade to grow some of these herbs and wood to build fire to do my baking. It sure would be nice to be able to live next to some other halflings.

Upon entering the Provost Office he had a look around trying to find a sign to tell him where to check in.
