A Tired Traveler (25th of Chyril Early Tradetide

The sun creeped over the mountains glaring down on Hong's camp site. The small fire had been slowing down and was finally extinguished some time before dawn. Hong tossed and turned throwing the wool blanket aside yawning stretching his arms wide before getting up. He gathered up his things, his sleeping pad and blankets finally changing his clothes. Then began his mourning routine of stretching. Hong was quite flexible and even though he felt his stretching had peaked and not much more could be accomplished it was still very relaxing.

He took his time meditating before grabbing his rope sandals shaking a centipede out of one then fitting them comfortably on his feet. Grabbing his pack he continued on down the mountain, this was the last one he crossed before Long Dahn. He could see the city in the distance just a small ant in his large field of vision. He gritted his teeth and as his stomach growled loudly, he was very hungry and hadn't eaten much yesterday. Regretting letting the centipede go he finally made it into the rice fields the robed farms not even glancing up to another stranger passing by, at last he made it to the city gates.

There was a constant stream of farmers merchants and just plain old wagons entering and exiting the city. He couldn't help but be bumped and pushed trying to weave through the crowds to no avail he decided to take a more aggressive stance finally making it into a less busy part of the city, right now he was very interested in finding something to eat then just maybe it'd be time for sight seeing.

As Hong looked down, he beheld the emerald beauty of the Floating City, Long Danh, capital of the Empire and home to the Dragon Empresses that he'd been told to revere since his earliest youth. The river Long Song plied itself around the holy Long Hang mountain. From the Forbidden Palace of Dragons a large waterfall fell down the mountain, ending in a spray of mist. Down there, in the lingering delta of the Long Song river, there were hundreds, no thousands of boats that together formed the Floating City, bound together with little wooden bridges and occasional houses on poles.

It was a long time since Hong had been able to pay his respects to the Kami at this family shrine. First there had been the journey to his uncle and the time spend there. His uncle had upon his marriage moved into the family of his wife, parting with his ancestors, and even after she died he did not return. Now he too had risen up in the sky to join the Kami. Down in that city however, there were old and new Kami that would hopefully welcome him in their midst. The city presented itself as endless choice.

As Hong turned to the path downwards into the valley he was joined by countless others, laborers on their way back to the Long family compound mostly, walking on their wooden sandels, sometimes guiding their waterbuffalo up the mountain towards the rice paddies.

Circling in the crowds, slowly making his way over this wooden bridge or that, Hong finally found himself on the Floating Market. Many boats big and small had created a thick maze of hundreds of boats packed with mango, bananas, papaya, pineapple, caged birds, fish, flowers, silk and anything else that was for sale in Long Danh. The merchants, with their simple tunics and conic bamboo hats, often wore a simple face covering against the vapours, paddle quietly, reacting to a wave of the hand or other simple signals. There was no haggling. Each knew his price. Already, many merchants had left, most of the trading done in morningtide. However for a newcomer the press of boats was still an impressive sight.

OOC: Hong, as was discussed in chat, be careful with assumptions. For now I'll suffice with pointing out there are no wagons as that would not be a practical means of transportation in a floating city. Don't worry too much. You are doing fine :)
