The Coming of a New Warrior - Draydis (SH 28th)

Post by Vanadius »

Spinning...

Falling...

Pain.

The sensation of falling came to an abrupt stop with a jolt of searing pain. The forests he knew so well were replaced with something different altogether. There were trees, but they were different kinds of trees. There were grass and shrubs, but they were different as well. This was a forest, but it was unlike any part of the verdant forests of Taquar. It was different in its composition and variety. The sounds of creatures unknown in Taquar could be heard. It was misty and wet, and colder and dark...

It was night.

He found himself on a broken circle of flat rock. It was perhaps ten paces across, and could barely be made out in the dim light of the moon. Brush and vines were beginning to overtake it, but the circle was still complete enough to be discerned. Other rougher stones jutted up in the wild growth around him. A low hill was to his left.

There was pain, but he was not seriously injured. Yahren of training and battlefield experience shouted from his subconscious that he would be alright, that he just needed to get up and get moving to shake off the aching shock.

There was no Gavin to be found here, only trees, shrubs and the distant call of nightbirds on the breeze. To his right there was the smell of smoke, and voices, voices of men could be heard on those same fell winds.

There was sudden movement in front of him. A man came stumbling through the trees. He was dressed in a soldier's uniform and the smell of cheap ale found its way across the small clearing. The soldier unlaced his breeches and began to relieve himself on a fallen and rotting tree.

The stranger, the new warrior, was as yet unseen by the drunk soldier.

The strange green creature with webbed feet...

A song inspired by the Mother...

Horrific flames suddenly consuming the world...

Touching the stone...

Demons and a lost friend...

Spinning...falling...

It seemed to last forever. At the start of the fall, something along the lines of, "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu..." could be heard, but his voice fell silent due to a lack of air long before impact...

The thing about falling isn't the journey, but the sudden stop at the end. This point was highlighted as the commander hit the stony ground. After a quiet utterance suggesting somebody should have carnal relations with him, Draydis opened his eyes at looked up at the night sky.

The woods he recognized were gone, as were the flames and others that had been around the stone with him. Once before, he had thought he was in Dort, and suddenly, a demon was attacking him...or was that a dream? It had certainly felt real enough. Gavin had been there, and they had fought the demons together. So where did it all go? What had happened? Was he dead? Was this a dream? Yet this too seemed real...

The air was crisp and sounds of nature were heard that were alien to the adhiel. He was definitely in a place where he had never before traveled. His body ached as it was pulled from the stone...and Dray did his best to be quiet about finding his feet again. A few shakes of his arms and legs let him know that everything was still attached and not broken. There would certainly be bruises, but the commander was used to those. The voices told him that he could be in trouble, and a broken body would not bode well for survival.

Then the sounds of one man being close by was heard, and its owner was soon found relieving himself on a fallen tree. Fortunately, he appeared to be drunk and occupied...at least for the moment. A quick scan of the surroundings gave Draydis an idea of what he had to work with. A plan almost immediately formed in his head. The layout of the trees and shrubs around him were considered as the guardsman visualized the plan and means of approach in his mind.

He would incapacitate the soldier and wound himself. Draydis would then be able to investigate the camp by returning their fallen friend with him. He would claim that he saw the attack, but before he could respond, he was struck on the head himself. The fresh wound would prove it. Draydis would claim to not have any present memory, which wasn't really that far from the truth, and besides, they wouldn't believe that he seemed to literally fall from the sky.

Instead of being treated as an enemy, Draydis would hopefully at least be regarded as being neutral. Without knowing even where he was, it was the best idea he had.

Two hand-sized rocks were picked up from the ground as the adhiel silently made his way to circle behind the man; carefully avoiding dry leaves and branches on the ground. The plan was to approach him from behind as he was pulling his breeches back up and to strike him hard enough on the head to knock him out...but not so hard as to deliver a lethal blow. He would have to be close, as Dray was not accurate in throwing things...it would have to be a strike with the rock still in his hand.

The second rock would be used as a distraction should the soldier seem to notice his presence. He would throw it high above the man's head into the distance so the soldier would focus his attention away from Draydis.

Once the soldier was knocked out, Dray would have to inflict a wound on his own head enough to give the appearance that they both had been attacked. He would have to inflict a wound on himself that would draw blood, but that would not knock himself out. If he had taken time to think about his plan, he probably would have laughed at it.

Sometimes being a bit crazy helped the commander survive...

With the plan in mind, Draydis made his way towards the soldier by way of the path that he had already decided upon; making his way carefully to be completely silent. Yet time was of the essence, as he had to knock out the soldier prior to the others approaching or the soldier finishing his duty.

As the man pulled up the breeches once again, Dray made his attack...

As the man finished and began to lace himself up, Draydis and his rocks crept stealthily towards the man, yahren of training and experience made this a whispery silent feat. The rock impacted with the man's skull with a sickening crack and the man fell without a word to the misty ground, leaving the Adhiel to do as he wished.

By timing or accident, loud laughter erupted from the area that the man had come from. A loud voice could suddenly be heard.

"You fool! That was the dumbest thing I ever seen."

More laughter.

"Shut up Gus and Let him be. You can tell he ain't from around here."

"Well that's true." The first voice continued. "Tell me boy, where are you from dressed in a get-up like that?"

The forest waited for an answer...

The voice suddenly directed at him was not expected. Draydis had hoped that his action would have gone unnoticed. He slowly turned towards the voice as to not make them think he was going to attack them as well. It had been a good plan...up until the point where it didn't work...such always seemed to be the case.

Many replies went though his mind...though one was at the forefront... ~Dumbest thing? Then wait around...you're in for a real treat, as I was just ready to bash this rock into my own head and wander into camp with your friend here claming to have been his savior.~

And then they insulted his appearance... ~I know, I know...and now you're going to ask if I can purr...~

No response was given yet...he wanted to see who was there first...

For a moment, Dray imagined him doing the same thing to a whole unit of men that had just watched him incapacitate their friend...and then him wandering into camp with a wagon full of soldiers that had been knocked out by rocks, claiming that he had just stumbled upon them all. Hopefully with the Mother's blessing, he would not have to ever attempt that lie. However serious of trouble he was in now, at least the commander maintained his sense of humor. Perhaps that would help him to get out of this mess...

Turning slowly, there was no sign of anyone else there.

A weak, nasally voice muttered something incomprehensible.

Laughter erupted once more and it became apparent that no one had witnessed his actions and attack on the soldier, but rather that he was close enough to whatever was taking place beyond this clearing that he could hear it fairly clearly.

Another voice cut through the night. It was stronger, more harsh, more powerful. In his time with the Emerald Guard, Draydis could recognize the forceful tone of a leader of men anywhere.

"You men let the boy be, will you? He ain't here to be your plaything. Let's go Oliver, and take that stupid cape off. You're not a lord or anything yet."

Soft chuckles followed but the men didn't seem to grumble or complain much about whatever they had been doing taken away from them. At the very least that had some discipline.

"Sergeant Jed watches that boy like a hawk. I ain't never seen such devotion from him." Said one voice.

Another replied. "Yeah, ever since we saw them people strung up, he's kept Oliver real close."

"You feel bad for picking on him?"

"Naw, I had two brothers that picked on me all the time. Toughens up your skin and Gods know that boy needs some toughening up."

The men shared a laugh.

"C'mon, lets get back to the game. I ain't won enough of your money yet."

The harsh thuds of an axe splitting wood, followed by a spoon scraping the inside of a pan and some soft conversation between soldiers carried through the misty, moist air. They were sounds that were unmistakeable, especially to a veteran soldier like the newly arrived Adhiel. He was near a soldier's campsite. How many were there was impossible to tell without more reconnaissance and more information.

A breath of relief was followed by a sly smile. Dray was glad that his senses and hearing had not been damaged too bad by the impact. He knew the soldiers were close, and was glad that he was still undiscovered.

Now that he knew that he was undiscovered for the moment, the first concern for Dray was whether he had hit the soldier too hard on the head or not...and second was whether or not the man had finished relieving himself.

A quick glance at the wound would hopefully answer his first question. Draydis knew almost nothing about healing other than that the healers always put a bandage on the wound and held it in place to help stop the bleeding. Using a bit of the man's own clothing, Dray tied a make-shift bandage into place.

Once he was certain the man wasn't dying, Draydis then realized that picking up the larger man was not an option. Dray was strong for an adhiel, but he was an adhiel none the less. He figured that he could drag the man towards camp. It would take more effort than he had originally thought about, but figured it might be possible.

Dray then used the second stone to inflict a wound on the side of his own head towards the rear. He knew it would have to be a fairly strong blow...but did not want to knock himself out in the process...so several strikes would be used instead of one forceful one. All he wanted was enough of a hit to make his head bleed and give the appearance that he had been attacked as well.

The rock was then tossed by the circle of rocks to make it appear as if Dray had been attacked there...just in case somebody investigated the scene of the attack. It wasn't a particularly good throw, as Dray's vision was slightly blurry now from having struck himself on the head with a rock several times. He was certain it had made it to approximately where he found himself resting on the ground not too long ago.

The only remaining problem was the absence of additional footprints in the area. There was one set going from the stony ground where Dray had landed to the point where he now stood. He could easily explain that he had approached the soldier from where he was to render assistance, but would have to come up with some reason why there were no other tracks in the area...or more importantly, why there were no tracks indicating where Dray had come from. This was a matter that the commander would have to contend with later, as thinking was not readily possible at the moment...staying upright was...

Figuring that he would come up with the reasons when asked, Draydis began to drag the wounded and unconscious soldier carefully towards the sounds from the camp. No attempts were necessarily made to be silent, as he wanted them to be able to hear his approach.

It was only then that a sharp pain shot through the commander's right arm. Where he hadn't noticed it before, his armor was mended, but the repair looked as if it had been done hastily or by somebody with little skill. A wound underneath that had scarred over was now open and bleeding once again. The memory of the demon fight in the strange world with the large man with a partial beard.....~Gavin?...yes...Gavin was who that was~...then came back to memory. ~Had I been there for real?~ He was confused more than ever, and his head began to ache even more. Regardless, the wound was real, and he was losing more blood than anticipated before.

It was now even more difficult pulling the soldier along. He was larger than Dray, the ground was uneven, and his head hurt like...well...like somebody had hit him in the head several times with a rock. The shoulder injury made his strength quickly begin to fail and the pain was now throbbing. It took much more effort than Draydis had anticipated, but with time and determination, he would do his best to get to the camp...before passing out...

Step by step...inch by inch...the clearing was just ahead. His breathing was very hard...forced. The pain...ever increasing. Vision was darkening. He was through the trees and saw others around... They looked close enough to the soldier that he had 'saved'..."Help us..." The words were weak, but hopefully loud enough to be heard. One final tug of the soldier was all the commander could muster. He stood over the injured man as if he were his protector. Dray was still conscious, but it was a matter of time that the blood loss would take its usual effect...

A sudden cry and the crashing of feet and men through the bushes soon flooded the small area with the sounds of furious activity.

"Get Jed!" A voice said sharply.

Sounds of swords being unsheathed and figures looming around in the darkness soon swam into view. Two crossbows, loaded and ready to shoot were aimed at him by the other soldiers. Half a dozen swords surrounded him with naked steel.

"What manner of devil is it?" One silhouette asked.

"Shut up!' Another hissed.

"What did it do to Endrew?"

"I told you to shut up!" The figure urged more insistently.

"It's hurt!" said another silhouette.

There seemed to be a lot of confusion before the one known only as Jed showed up. Jed was a tall, lanky man with a thick black mustache that hung down both sides of his mouth to his chin. He had a conical steel helm on and wore a shirt of ringmail. A weaselly youth dressed in a bright blue cape nearly clung to him as they came forward from the darkness.

"Easy there. Easy." Jed offered. "That's Endrew. One of my men. It's best if you were to just back away and let us take care of him. Let's start there huh? Just back away slowly and then we can figure out who you are and where you come from." It was clear these men had never seen anything like the tattooed warrior.

Something in Jed's tone was soothing. Yet there was an underlying current of anger in Jed's voice, like he wanted answers and he wanted them now.

Draydis knew when the time to fight was proper and when it was not. However, this was a time that his senses were not exactly present in full force. As the soldiers crashed through the woods to his position, the adhiel lowered his stance as if ready to pounce on the first attacker that drew near. At this point, he was uncertain if the man he had rendered unconscious was even with this group of soldiers....or perhaps it was the loss of blood from the wound on his shoulder and head that was causing him to not think so clearly.

With slightly slurred words, the commander addressed them all, "He is under my protection...if you mean him harm, I will take all of you on." A brief smile appeared on Dray's face, and in a flash it was gone. "One at a time..." While he spoke, the commander's body swayed slightly. If it hadn't been for the blood trickling down the side of his head and the blood spilling from his shoulder, an observer would have sworn he was seriously intoxicated.

The next few flickers passed from Dray's memory as he began to fade in and out of consciousness. It was when the man named Jed appeared that the adhiel was able to focus his thoughts once again...sort of.

Draydis looked down at the man at his feet. "Endrew..." He looked again at Jed. "head...bandaged..." There were words spoken in between each of these three, but they were mostly unintelligible. From Dray's point of view, he was talking like normal, so he continued on.

Something made Draydis realize that the men meant no harm to Endrew, and the best thing for him to do was to back away. One step backwards from Endrew was taken. It was the farthest possible thing from graceful that those present had seen. It took every bit of energy to make his one leg move, and Draydis suddenly realized that he was in trouble. A flurry of words suddenly came to mind...and of course that's how they all came out...

"Demons....Taquar....burnt...Guard...Mother...quest....paladin....Islay....Gavin...fall...sky..."

His hand was able to undo the buckle that held his sword belt into place, and the weapons fell to his feet. "Commander...Quinn..." Slowly his hand extended towards Jed as if to offer it to the man in greeting...

A sudden expression hit the face of Dray as if he had suddenly solved the problems of the world...or that his brain had finally decided to shut down his body due to the lack of blood. Perhaps it was that he had just crapped himself as his brain realized that an entire army had seemingly just confronted him. No...it was the blood loss.

He looked briefly at the young boy wearing the cape. There was a momentary period of complete clarity for the adhiel. "Sure is young to be a king." At that instant, Dray's knees buckled, and on top of Endrew he fell...completely unconscious.

Spinning...

Falling...

Pain...

The sensation of pain was much different this time as the warrior Adhiel Draydis awoke. This time there were no rocks, no clearings in a forest, no circles of any type.

Or were there?

A circle spun in fuzzy, blurred space before his eyes. The hazy light flickered and danced, and it hung in space above him.

Focus.

The circle above him was a pendant on the end of a chain. The chain was around the neck of a young girl, perhaps fourteen or fifteen yahren, She hovered over him as he opened his eyes. Her features marked her Achadhiel and she carried the lineage well. She was a beautiful young woman, budding from child into adult.

"Namaste."

She welcomed him in an accent that spoke nothing of human heritage or time among them.

"I shall go inform my father that you are awake. Be still and try not to move about too much."

She floated away out of his line of sight and the top of a tent could be seen. A breeze carried through the flaps and rustled the fabric above him. He was alone, and no one had tampered with his armor or belongings. The tent was sparsely furnished, and was really nothing more than the cot he lay in, a low folding table with a basin of water and few packs on the floor, which lay open and unguarded.

The only concession to ornamentation was a rich green tapestry that hung from the tent's central pole. It was scene very familiar to Draydis as it depicted the Adhiel homeland of Taquar. It was well done, despite crude materials, and somehow it was oddly comforting.

It seemed the girl's father was far enough away to leave the newly arrived Commander to his own devices for a time.

A pendant...it was the first thing his eyes saw...yet they didn't see it at the same time. A familiar word was heard, namaste, and without thinking, the adhiel replied. The rest of the girl's words weren't really heard, as his head was still quite fuzzy...in fact, the guardsman didn't really realize that a girl had actually been present. It was the feeling like when he awoke, he had replied to the ending part of a dream and the girl who was no longer present was its intended listener.

It had been a dream...all of it. The demons, falling, the soldiers, the crazy plan to knock out the poor drunk to gain access to the camp...

or had it been?

As he attempted to sit up in the bed, the pain in his shoulder told him that the demon had at least been real. So was this a dream or was this real? The world around the adhiel warrior was strange and unknown, yet there were elements present that made them somewhat comforting.

One thing was for certain, Draydis still had his faith. The Crone would surely help his mind find answers...

He removed his armor and clothing except for the breeches of his uniform. Carefully, a symbol of the Crone was traced in the dirt of the floor. Once drawn, the commander kneeled within the symbol, closed his eyes, and began to pray.

He started at first just trying to clear his mind...trying to focus on what was real and what was dream. The words he spoke were of the ancient adhiel tongue. They had been taught to him during his first bit of training with the Guard. It was in these words he quietly and calmly spoke out,

"Mother Crone...I feel lost. I remember Taquar burning, as the smell is still strong on my body. Or was that a dream? I remember fighting demons with Gavin, as I bear a wound still. I am now here, wherever this place is, and yet I wonder if it is a dream as well. I do know one thing however, my Mother, I know that no matter where I am, and no matter what my condition, I can always turn to you for guidance and support. I ask you now...please give me clarity." He focused on the feeling that he had felt when he stood near the Mother's tree...how the power surged through him when he had confronted the demon's ghost...it had been at that moment that he knew his life would be dedicated to the Mother. "I am, as always, yours faithfully."

For a time that was unknown to the guardsman, Draydis focused his thoughts and feelings on the teachings of the Mother and the peace that She gave him...

There were little answers forthcoming to Draydis except for the rustle of the wind and the calls of the morning birds. Other sounds came in, men calling softly to one another, horses stamping and whickering, but nothing that would disrupt his prayers or meditation.

It was perhaps half a mark later when the girl returned with her father. He was tall and sinewy and very familiar. This was Jed, the Sergeant that confronted him when Dray was last conscious. He seemed pleasantly surprised to find the stranger awake and seemingly hale enough.

"Well then. You gave us quite a fright last night. It's good to see you up and about."

Then he continued in a well spoken, slightly accented Adhiel. Clearly this was no stranger to Adhiel or their customs.

"Well met Commander Quinn. I am Jed, senior squad leader of the armies of Dort. My daughter and I have tended to your wounds and you have slept in our tent. You mentioned demons in Taquar and a name last night. You said the name of Gavin, and I wanted to know if you meant Gavin Tylvan. He is here in the camp. Do you know him?"

Dray was surprised when the girl returned with her father. He had thought that the girl was merely imagined or part of a dream. A puzzled look appeared on his face as the adhiel attempted to make sense of everything. Taquar had burnt...or had it? Was the demon encounters with Gavin real? The wound on his shoulder certainly indicated it was. There were many questions and few answers at the moment. Perhaps this man could help...

As Dray put his uniform back on, his thoughts began to form.

"I appreciate your assistance you have given me, but I honestly do not know what has actually happened lately. It all seems like a dream," Holding up the torso piece of his armor to inspect the damage closer, "but at the same time, I bear wounds that indicate otherwise."

He studied the man for a moment. "You will think I have lost my senses if I told you everything. It seems like it is all clear, but at the same time I do not know what to believe...plus, some of my memory seems to be missing. Aye...a demoness and a great fire has destroyed Taquar. I fought demons recently...though I do not know where. Then there was a soldier. He was wounded as was I. There were suddenly many soldiers...and then I woke here."

Dray did remember a few more details of the night before...such as how he had wounded the soldier and hhimself, but those facts were better to be omitted.

"I have asked the Mother Crone to guide me and help me find answers...yet She did not answer...in fact, I do not even feel Her presence here..."

That last realization truly bothered the commander...where was he?

At the mention of Gavin, the adhiel looked concerned. "Is Gavin well? He was wounded fighting the demons with me....one gave him a terrible blow. I owe him my life."

Draydis was completely unaware that he was talking about a dream...

"Well certainly. As far as I know he's well. He's... Hold on for a flicker. Did you say you were fighting demons together? When was that sir?Because from what I know, Gavin was on a mission for the Count for the last few days and only returned from that mission yesterday..."

Jed gave his daughter a strange look of confusion and curiosity. She returned it with one of her own. Jed shrugged it off as he believed the head wound had the Adhiel's mind a bit addled.

"Never mind all that. That wound of yours has got things mixed up and jumbled for you."

Jed firmly believed that Draydis was remembering a battle, but he was certain that the newly arrived warrior was confusing the days. There was no way he could have been fighting demons in Taquar recently. It was impossible to get here that fast. Likely whatever he tangled with last night had re-opened partially healed wounds and now the Adhiel was thinking they were from recent days instead of weeks ago.

"Well if you wish to see him, I can take you to him. He's not far off. Last I saw him he was over near the Count's tent. When you're ready, grab you're gear and we'll head over there."

"Come Norah, let's leave the Commander to his preparations. Commander. I shall wait for you outside." Sergeant Jed and his daughter left and allowed the tent flap to close behind them. Draydis could hear him telling her that she needed to return to the Count's tent to see if there was anything else she could do. Their shadows embraced on the wall of the tent, and the girl's footsteps faded away.

Draydis listened to Jed's words, not fully understanding them...or even his own thoughts and memories at the time. Perhaps Jed was right in saying that Draydis had suffered a great wound and more time had passed than he had thought.

But he remembered clearly the feeling of falling from the sky, and if not that, certainly the feeling of the sudden impact upon the rocks covering the ground. Dray recalled creating the plan to attack the drunken guard to gain entrance into the camp as a friend. No. He knew for certain that his head was just fine....perhaps.

"I fought the demons with Gavin just last night...before I arrived here....before I fell from..." He shook his head. Jed would not believe his words, nor would anybody else. Perhaps Gavin could help him to sort it all out. "Nevermind. Perhaps you are right."

He nodded at Jed's suggestion to get his gear and go meet Gavin. "Aye. Give me a few moments to dress again."

He looked to the pile next to the bed. His armor was there along with most of his weapons. A single change of clothing was there as well...but it was his mottled green and brown clothing that he used many times to sneak through the woods. It was then that Draydis clearly remembered wearing his commander uniform when fighting the demons. The question in his mind then became whether the demons was a dream or this was...or perhaps both.

The confusion further settled in when Dray remembered leaving practically all his gear and some weapons with the Avatar. She had told him that he could only take what he would normally carry into battle. Nothing extra was brought, not even food or drink. Everything sitting next to the bed was what he had taken when he left the Avatar to seek out the demon slaying sword...

~Mother Crone, though my head is a mess, I thank you for life. I know not what has happened exactly, but I know that I am still faithfully yours.~

The weapons were carefully set upon the bed. He had a quiver with a holster attached to it for the bladed staff, a bow, his two short swords, three small knives in sheathes attached to a belt, a pair of axes, the Emerald Guard issued bladed staff, and a whip. The pieces of his armor were then set upon the bed. They were all accounted for...and he would need to get the shoulder piece properly repaired soon. He did not remember how or who fixed the armor, but it was certainly not sufficient to take another blow at that point.

He put on the pieces of padded clothing that were worn under the armor. His shoulder wound made the process of getting dressed painful and slower than usual, but he wanted to be dressed properly when meeting Gavin and likely many others. Dray was obviously a stranger to these people and this land, and he knew that his appearance would be how others would judge him at first glance. Despite the tender wound, the commander proceeded.

Once the padding was donned, he put the hardened black leather into place...carefully adjusting the straps to make it as comfortable as possible. He was still not very good at putting on the armor, but he had learned a few tricks about how to adjust it properly.

Next, the brown and green clothing was put on over the armor. The mottled appearance of the clothing gave him an edge when moving through the woods, as from a distance he could more easily blend into the pattern of leaves. A good coating of dirt, mud, and sticks often made the ability to blend even better. Fortunately for his appearance at this moment, the clothing was clean and free of those other materials. Oddly enough, Dray's memory of wearing his commander uniform was reinforced when he realized that the mottled clothing was in perfect condition. There was no cut in the material, only a slight darkened area where the blood had stained the clothing from the night before. Though it made him realize that his memory was stable, it did little to help the adhiel figure out if fighting the demons or this day was in fact the dream...

Finally, the weapons were all put into place. He wore the knives across his chest, an axe and short sword on each hip, the quiver and bow were across his back, the whip was wrapped about his torso diagonally as if it were a bandolier, and his bladed staff was held firmly in his hands. Though it was a camp full of people that were not the enemy, having the staff in its holster made it difficult to walk through tent openings and the like, as the staff blade extended almost a foot above his head.

He took a moment to mediate and calm the burning sensation that was now present in his shoulder. Getting all his gear readied had aggrivated the wound slightly, and though it was still closed, he certainly was reminded of its presence. Once his heart rate and pain were back under control, Draydis stepped from the tent.

He approached Jed and smiled at him. "Thank you for the accomodations last night and for taking care of my wound. I appreciate the trust you extended to me to give me such treatment. It is not often that a stranger is welcomed in such a way. If I can repay the kindness, please let me know. I am in your debt, my friend."

He then surveyed the camp for the first time. Draydis took a moment to take in how the tents were arranged, the types of soldiers present, their weapons and armor, and anything else that caught his eye immediately. After a moment or two he spoke again. "If it is not too much of a bother, I would like to see Gavin now."

He then followed Jed through the camp, taking note of the route they traveled...

In the light of day the horrors of night were revealed. The entire camp had assembled on the shoulders of several hills that gently supported the smoking remains of a small town. The town had been built upon the banks of a wide inlet, and had likely been a fishing village that had grown over the yahren. Now it sat in tattered, ash covered ruins as it had been ravaged by fire in nearly every corner. The blackened, stone shells of buildings stood open to the sky without their thatched roofs, and a breeze carried the stench of smoke, death and defeat on the air. This was a town that had been ravaged by the effects of a brutal attack, and Draydis' experience taught him that the town had been fired in a manner designed to inflict the most damage with the most amount of casualties. Whomever had attacked this place had done so with the intent of killing everyone who had lived here.

Out in the somewhat more serene harbor, a ship bobbed in the grey waves. It had three masts, a wide tiller, and a handful of men about it's top deck. The sails had been withdrawn, but a flag still flew from the highest point on the mast. It depicted a simple bowl of soup.

They travelled through the grey, ash covered streets of the town and all was grim and silent. There were no people, none living anyway, and soldiers picked through the remains of the town looking for anything worth salvaging. Several bodies lay strewn about and the soldiers were gathering the corpses and laying them out in gruesome rows. Healers walked among them, checking for signs of life that they knew were not there, and gathering the personal effects to give to family members.

Jed led Draydis along this melancholy route until at last he reached where Gavin stood. The large Dortman was speaking in a somewhat animated manner with a red haired woman, another young woman with a twisted braid of brown hair and a Dwarf.
