Hear ye, hear ye, citizens of Roque! ~ Seb and Rhoddin

Post by Syra »

Samheen 29th, early tradetide

Amidst what few people were outside the town crier rose his head to meet the rains. His voice ached. This was a bad day like anyone in autumn.

I am getting too old for this. He sighed for the somaniest time. If only his son had taken an interest in the noble profession it would not be so hard to say farewell to his job. Yet as it was he would simply have to try and keep it up until the agency found a suitable replacement.

The rain still came down in streams, making it very hard for him to cry out his message. A shame, for important it was. His voice simply was not what it had been a couple of yahren ago, yet he had to try.

Again he scraped his throat, looked around and took a good breath:

"HEAR YE, HEAR YE, good people of ROQUE D'ANCOURT! King BALTHASAR requests your aid in what will be the most important day in our beloved kingdom! All those who wish to be a part of the MOST decisive BATTLE of our lives, GATHER at the PORTAL in two marks, where you will be TRANSPORTED to KING's COURT for the greater glory of our KING!

LONG LIVE KING BALTHASAR!UGHEugheugh..."

Coughing the crier had to keep the message short. Nobody looked up anyway. Shrugging the man went on to his next task: finding the elusive people who were invited to meet with the King. How his employer knew that Rhoddin and Sebastian of Brie could be found here, was beyond him.

But...who was he to question, after all?

Sighing he went off in search of the right people.

Rhoddin and baron Sebastian, feel free to barge in here and contact Grant about your entrance in KC. You will be given free passage through the portal.

From amongst the crowds a taller than average man made his way towards the town crier. His head was bowed against the rain and his face was hidden in the cowl of his cloak, shadows obscuring his rugged features and penetrating green eyes. His age was difficult to judge, given the nondescript clothing he wore, although the sword scabbard peeking from under his cloak and his strong stride bespoke a younger man in fair health.

"Good day to you kind sir. My name is Rhoddin, an apprentice Brad of sorts, and I seek transport to Kings Court." There was a note of apprehension in the usually steady voice of the young man. He wasn't sure that he was on the right side, but he had a personal allegiance to Prince, no King Balthasar, and he intended to honour that, if for no other reason than he actually liked the young man he remembered as Prince Balthasar during there recent rather tumultuous journey.

Sebastian jogged closer to the herald, having only caught a portion of the announcement. The terrible weather did not help, as the young baron was reminded with each muddy running step, nor did the elderly man's hoarse voice.

When he had heard the message repeated, Sebastian was stunned into momentary silence. Battle? What battle could this be? Had something gone wrong in T'aquar, where the King's desire to cleanse the forest may have overstretched the Kingdom's resources? Sebastian was not in favour of that conflict to start with, and if something had happened there to put the Border Estates in jeopardy...visions of the smoke that had hovered over the mighty woods when he visited Magdalena in Murrelbuck.

And what timing! With this annoying bit of administrative paperwork still to clear, Sebastian was loath to leave Roque. If he did, who knew what opportunist might find a home in Sebastian's manor? The very thought raised the hackles on the young baron's neck.

But what else to do? He had forged his position by staunchly supporting Balthasar even in the monarch's absence. And now as an official vassal, how could he do anything less? With dutiful service, perhaps some of Brie's hurts could be quickly healed - an infusion of royal favour could not hurt, and might lessen the debt Sebastian would otherwise incur with his neighbours.

Two marks, the herald had said. Sebastian would make sure he was present at the portal at the appointed time.

The dripping town crier looked up at Rhoddin, one raindrop splashing on his nose as if cued. "Anyone looking to aid strong king Balthasar report at the portal outside Roque d'Ancourt." He intoned, having learned all information by heart. "You will have two marks to pack up your belongings and report. The king is in a hurry so transportation is free. Now, if you will excuse me..."

Quickly he waddled through another puddle of water, in search of others that had to be notified personally, leaving Rhoddin to find the portal -which should not be hard since it was a whole organisation by itself outside the gates.

At the gates both Sebastian and Rhoddin found a busy clerk signing up the remainder of people who'd go voluntarily after the insane raids of a few days before. There were preciously few nobles from the looks at their gear and following. Strangely enough there were more women than men too, one elderly woman huffing and puffing with the smell of a bakery still hanging around her.

Obviously all people had been called and not just those with a direct link to the king...or perhaps this was a cheap way of moving to King's Court, attested by the strange amounts of furniture and bags some people were carrying!
