Trothgard - Homecoming

Post by Hex da`Bergliin »

There was a crisp snap to the air as the elk muzzled the snow for some dead grass beneath. It's ears shot to the front as it froze to the spot. Snapping it's head up it looked to where it had heard the sound, the sound of humans. With confirmation the elk bolted back into the forest. It was a smart elk.

Tjuv looped along beside Hex as they approached the outskirts of Rimmerhold. The wolf had seen the elk but Hex had trained her wolves well and the elk was ignored. Hex on the other hand was deep in focus and was letting the wolf act as additional eyes. Her head snapped to where the wolf looked and saw the elk run off.

Oh to be on a simple hunting trip. No, she was off to see Skaali and change the future history of Trothgard.

A snow squall between them and the town. Hex was sharp, her power up and feeling out, her shield up and her warrior sense in overdrive. She did not know if Skaaliwould try to kill her on sight, she doubted it but some of his followers might.

The Embol was powerful but was he a leader?

There are somethings that linger in the air after a battle. The smell of blood, silence and the smell of the burnt bodies. The ashes had been spread by the wind but the smell lingered.

“He will know by now that we are here.”

Hex took a deep breath and looked back. Smiling to her little band she started the walk into the centre of town.

Langredoc smiled while Hex watched the rather small crowed following her. The warrior knew her good enough by now to know that she was preparing to fight if needed.

Nothing ever went the way it should, the young man concluded. So much for a warm welcome and a clean bed. He checked of his weapons where free and not frozen stuck in their scabbards. In this place everything had a frozen solid or a heartless cold attitude, animals, women............. everything.

It would never be Langredoc's favourite place to be. He checked his weapons again, looking wearily around.

Thin and wispy plumes of smoke blossomed from a few chimneys in the settlement of Rimmerhold, giving the town an almost sleepy, hazy feel. There were a few men in the streets, moving back and forth between buildings in the same direct and no-nonsense manner that natives too long in the white lived and were wont to do.

There were no guards posted. No defenses built. Nothing that would indicate anything was amiss or even important about the town.

The young wolves of Langredoc and Hex sniffed cautiously at the wind. They had never seen or smelled this many people before, and clearly the scent of man was intriguing to them.

As the two wolves and the people made their way into the town, they were left alone until finally someone hailed them and made his way over to them. Hex recognized the man as Hrut, one of Skaali's men and a dangerous and lethal warrior. The angular man was chewing something rather contentedly and obviously enjoying it.

"Back from the Wall eh?"

He might as well have been commenting about the weather, his tone and manner was that casual.

Hex did not know what to expect. From the lack of damage to the town it looked like the strike had been a quick and decisive one. Good for them too late for the defenders. Hex mind wondered how many of the original inhabitants of the town remained. The thought floated through her mind like a leaf upon the fall wind.

Either no one payed them any mind or they were preparing an ambush. Either way it did not matter.

Hrut walked up to them as if it was as natural for them to be here as if they had never left.

Hex stopped her little party and cocked her head to Skaali's warrior.

"Hello Hrut, it looks like the battle went well. I have come to converse with Skaali, there is much we need to discuss. Shall you take us to him or shall we wait for you to bring him to us?"

Langredoc just ,made way, following Hex and abiding his patience while keeping a eye on the two wolves when they trying to do some mischief.

He sized the man Hex was talking to... experienced and probably deadly.. if the man would make a false move the young warrior would not hesitate. It this land the one waited the longest died.. or worse got frozen.

His eyes checked the surroundings again. It was not difficult to admit to himself that he was looking forward to leave this country. Although it had served him well, no assassin had tried to kill him here. Not even his ex lord was able to pay a killer so well that he would go to the land of Cold Misogynists and Frozen Misanthropists... Even Hex who he liked as a comrade was a seemingly icy bitch who only blazed with fire when she could serve her "serve me or freeze your balls off Goddess" or change the colour of snow into red using the blood of her enemies..

Bugger... maybe the summer would be more fun. Whenever that would be.

He continued to chew as she spoke, his eyes traveling over Hex, the wolves, and Langredoc casually, almost thoughtlessly.

He stopped chewing for a moment to answer her.

"This is a land of free people now. If you want to speak with Skaali, then go speak with him. As for me, I am neither your servant, nor his. Therefore I go where I please, and it won't please me in the slightest to escort you to him."

The less than friendly reply ended with a nod towards the temple.

"He's in there."

Simple, curt, to the point. Hrut stalked off to whatever destination he felt was next for him, leaving them to decide for themselves.

Hex laughed with mirth at the words of Hrut as he turned to walk away.

Shouting after him...

"You are only as free as you are cold."

Hex smiled and tuned to those with her.

"So it begins. Come let us see what is left of this temple and what Skaali has been up to and what mess he has made."

She was curt and to the point. It was going to be a long road to bring these people around. As she made her way to the temple she looked for signs of those that lived here before. Signs that Skaali had control of the slaughter that took place here and that only those that needed to be killed were.

Langredoc watched Hex and Hruts bickering with amusement. As long those two did not start a fight it was ok with him.

The young wolf he had called Brother was licking his fingers to get attention... something the warrior gave after a few flickers.

When Hex talked to the little group Langredoc just muttered.. "Be careful Hex, you are assuming and underestimating people it seams..."

He smiled at the warrior ice-queen, while scratching the wolf cub behind his ears.

The Temple was a grand structure. Or was before Skaali and his free men came. Now cracks and burn marks marred the Temple walls, and blood was... well everywhere. Several people were at work trying to clean it. They were mostly men, but a few women and children helped too.

Skaali lounged lazily in one of the Elder's chairs. He was toying with a crystal in his hands, and Kari the silent stood at his side. He looked up, almost sleepy in his expression and when he saw Hex and Langredoc enter, he smiled a feral grin.

He waved Kari away as they made their way down the steps, and when the reached the lowest level where the Embol sat, they found the head of the Kona stuck on a caltrop at his feet. Skaali sat back, leaning his weight on a elbow casually. As Hex neared, he looked at her carefully, a crackle of energy came and went.

"I liked you better when blood ran through you, not ice. When you tire of it, seek me out, I'll help you give it back."

The moment Langredoc entered the temple he knew that he would not like Skaali, blood told a tale of slaughter and murder. The man was disgusted by the idea of someone slaughtering women and children... children.

He touched the scabbard of his weapons and for the first time he made sure to step beside Hex, in stead of being close behind her. A picture touched him for a few flickers, he standing in the temple in the midst of a crowd of women... warrior women... who's blood was now a part of the stones of the temple. He recalled some faces... faces of the unknown.. wondering why their icy Goddess had never protected them while the weapons of their enemy made their way through flesh and bones. He doubted if one of them would have begged for her life.

So he smiled back at the man called Skaali and before Hex could answer his words Langredoc spoke.... softly... clearly.... smiling...

"If ice is could enough it burns like fire... and leaves the same scars to those who touch it... I wonder who's blood it is that you want to give away..." His eyes made a sweep over the interior of the temple to bring home his point.

He smiled.... but inside him was a fire.... a hunger.... to wash some victim blood away with that of their murderer. He left the decision to Hex and the Red Warrior.... for the first time he understood how it could be possible that someone was covered in blood... and enjoys it. Blood of the guilty... washes away the blood of the innocent... His eyes searched those of the man called Skaali...

If the was a challenge he would answer it, the Red Warrior wills... In his mind he made a promise that if this man Skaali was responsible for the slaughter of innocent that he would take his head.... now or in many yahren... he could wait.... in the end the guilty would always pay their price.,,,

Focused on the eyes of the man he said relaxed and softly "The warrior stands..." he knew Hex would be in charge today... still... he smiled... a wolves smile.. it was a nice answer to that of Skaai.... who should answer only one question.... "why" it better be a good answer... Langredoc's life could depend on it... Life was never easy in this icy wasteland... justice a hollow word... It would have been so much better if the young man would have stayed aboard the "White Raven" when it sailed away. No worries, no trouble and enough female attention.

Well, it could still happen...or even better.. first clean up a mess... thanks Red Warrior.. he took his blades out.

Hex was pleased to see that the battle had at least been focused to the temple area. That was good. She was still uncertain if the slaughter had, but all in good time.

The duality of seeing the temple burned and people cleaning it struck a chord in Hex. She was pleased to see that not all was lost in the land.

As she walked down the halls to the chamber room she stopped to look at each person who was there cleaning. She did not ask them their names but she looked at each closely to see if she could recognize them.

As she entered the hall Hex smiled at seeing Kari and the lounging Skaali.

She waited for a few flickers and then a few burns until...

"Are you done with your little game yet?"

Hex moved as she spoke, not for Skaali but for the chair of the Kona.

She waited a flicker or two after she had taken her seat and then spoke again, looking not at Skaali but up the corridor to the people cleaning. She did not let down her shield, not in the slightest she was no fool and she knew the danger of the man beside her.

"You know, having her head before you on a caltrop is well, rather sad don't you think? I mean, yes there had to be a cleansing and a cleaning out of some old wood but really, it is not very becomming nor sanitary. I see that you have made many believe in your ideal of false freedom, any plans for the future? Humm?"

The Embol didn't even stir. Not when Langredoc unsheathed his weapons, nor when Hex took the Kona's seat.

If ice is could enough it burns like fire... and leaves the same scars to those who touch it... I wonder who's blood it is that you want to give away..

"Perhaps yours warrior. Perhaps no one's. Is it my blood that you seek? Or perhaps you're someone else's thrall?"

Skaali's head turned towards Hex in a lazy tilt.

"Game? I assure I wasn't playing any game. Perhaps you think I view the lives that have been given to this as pieces on some sort of game board? Judging by the company you're keeping these days..." He said with a pointed glance towards Langredoc, "... you're fancying yourself as some sort of heir to the throne. Funny how you went straight for the Kona's chair, when there are so many other places to sit. You want to reign as Kona? Be my guest."

A mocking smile crossed his handsome face, unlike many other northerners, his teeth were straight and white.

"What a romantic you are! Little girl from a trivial and unimportant clan, wants to rise up and rule the North. How typical. How utterly predictable."

The Embol lurched to his feet. With a strange twirl with his arms outstretched, like a gesture towards the entire frozen north.

"You want this? Take it! What is your first decree my Queen? What shall be the first law you wish to enact?"

His eyes flashed and sparkled dangerous and seductive.

Thrall ?? the term was unknown to Langredoc, still the expression left a bad feeling... it probably would mean slave or something he guessed.

"Mmm, I don't know what is a thrall but I am a free man if that's what you mean... Your blood sounds ok to me... I just wonder about what price you seem to have paid for what gain ?"

Hex smiled back at Skaali and then watched as he danced around.

And then she made them all wait for a few flickers before she started to respond.

"Perhaps, if you had met me when I was younger, you would have been right. Now though, you could not be more wrong. Do you think I truly want to rule here and clean up your mess for you?"

Hex shook her head in a slow sad shake.

"No Skaali I do not think i am ready to rule a people. I cam back for many reasons, one was to make sure that you are treating all the people well."

Hex stood and walked towards the centre of the room. She gave Langredoc a wink.

"It is true that the woman who's head resides behind me, in my opinion had lost her way. Ironic that she lost her head. It is a pity, but i suppose a necessity that you had to kill so many good warriors."

Hex paused for a moment and reflected upwards.

"Yes Skaali I want this. This building and all that it stands for. The people must be free to worship the Ice Queen as they were meant to do. Not to have old women tell you how and how not to worship her. That is why she left them you know. I think that they had forgotten who they were and where they were."

Hex looked down from the roof to Skaali.

"Mistakes were made. They never should have driven you from the settlement. They never should have driven any man or woman, myself included. Let us not make the same mistake over and over again. Now you want to know what I want? I want the people to be free to worship the Ice Queen and I hope that you did not destroy the library?"

Hex raised an eyebrow at her adversary.

"Do you plan to lead? if so you, rather we, since we are a we if you have indeed decided to unite the people, need to have representation in the Citadel. I can think of no better place other than this temple, which is where I think I shall live and preach the ways of our Queen, that I can be more helpful to the people than rebuilding a strong trade relationship with the rest of the isles. I think from my travels abroad that people think us weak. Do you think us weak?"

Hex smiled a coy little smile.

"So, you will take care of Trothgard while I am away on business wont you? Oh don't worry I will come back and assist you with any battles you have with the white ones or anything or anyone else for that matter. Any other business you want me to take care of for you in the Citadel? Any idea what happened to that weak kneed bitch we sent there to represent us? I head she 'fell in love' and got played."

Hex just stood there and crossed her arms. Part of the reason she had stood in the centre of the temple room is that she remembered the acoustics of the place and she knew that everyone in every hall could hear every word she spoke. She wanted them to know their Queen had not abandoned them and neither had she.

Skaali laughed, showing his white teeth in his dark beard.

"You sound like some damn fool zealot with visions and delusions of heaven and eternity as the final reward. Is that what you learned when you went to the southlands? How to bend a knee and call something or someone else master? I thought you had more spine than that. I thought you were a creature of the north, but you're just soft and craven and eager to kneel."

He resumed his slumped, casual posture in the chair as he sat back down.

"Begone slave! The North has no place for those too stupid and stubborn to see that reign of witches is over! You are holding the reins to a sled with dead dogs! If your Queen disagrees, tell her to come see me. I'd be eager to spend a whole burn telling her as well."

For Langredoc was the term witch associated with old crone mumbling curses over innocent people while brewing poisons. Only stories of the old folk... it was impossible to put the picture of Hex on that... it was almost funny.. almost.

He decided to wait and see, keeping his mouth shut and try to figure out what was happening, it was easy.. so far they more or less ignored him..

Still, he had the felling that it would give a lot of satisfaction to kick this arrogant ice monkeys ass.... better not... not now at least...

Hex let out a sigh as if she was defeated. She slumped her head and walked up to stand in front of Skaali.

"Yes Skaali I learned in the south that women are supposed to be meek..."

As Hex finished she drove he fist forward into the face of Skaali. She knew that he may best her with magic, but not is she was beating the sense out of him at the time.

She did not want to have to fight this man but fight she would, it would have come one way or the other.

"Slave?, is that what the people of Trothgard are to be to you?"

She snatched the crystal he had been playing with away from him. She could feel its fine craftsmanship, most probably made by her cousin.

"What trinket is this, a trick you used to defeat the Kona and her warriors? Your men were not up to the fight without trickery and deceit?"

She hope the others in the hall truly could hear everything that was being said.

OOC: This thread is now impassible. The threat is not immediately recognizable, but will be soon.

Hex's fist met Skaali's face to the side of his nose and under his eye, the force of the blow snapped his head back and into the high backing of the chair he sat in. He released the crystal from his hand, and when Hex picked it up, she could tell immediately that there was something... wrong about it.

To the naked eye, it was perfect, and well crafted. But no Bergliin hand had ever touched it, and furthermore, no one else but Skaali had ever touched it. Its power resonated with corruption and filth. Not Skaali's, his power was a distinct and unusual strong counter to the corruption within, but her touched released it, and she could feel the ichor slowly leaking from it into the world. Whatever her had been doing, it left little doubt that he was not a part of it, and he had been fighting it.

Skaali himself reached up and grasped his head, tenderly feeling the place where she had punched him.

"If anyone here is a slave, it is you." He said quietly, his voiced pained and almost regretful.

"What you hold is a fragment of the Brenna, the Burning. It is deadly, poisonous, and will consume us all. It's growing. The White Ones cultivate it like an avalanche gathers snow."

The few eyes that were in the hall were indeed watching, and listening.

"But you cannot see beyond your loyalties. You are blinded by your own feckless pride. If you stopped for a moment to unhood your eyes, and take a good look around, perhaps you might see what your own petty judgements have denied you."

He stood, uncertain and unsteady.

"If you wish to face the White Ones alone, than that is your choice. I'm not here to ask your permission, nor do I need it. I will leave you to your battle, since you seem to know what's best for all, especially yourself."

With shaky steps, he began to leave the hall. With every step, the crystal in Hex's hand grew hotter and more... wrong.

Something had changed after Hex took the crystal... Langredoc had watched with a kind of satisfaction when Skaali got punched.

Now the warriors gut feeling was screaming out a warning. Something in the atmosphere made his hair stand up. It was not clear what was the cause... though the young man had learned to listen to his feelings and knew that he could only ignore them at great personal costs.

While Skaali left the hall he stepped he felt eyes watching and Hex seemed absorbed by the crystal, and that crystal was bad...

His voice was still rough from his last encounter when he said to Hex "Destroy that thing and start preparing... something bad is going to happen, and we better make sure that we are not absorbed by it !!!"

OOC: I will start an OOC thread for us to discuss what is going on.

Hex's head hurt. She shouted at Skaali before he left the chamber.

"Skaali! Wait, please."

Hex paused a flicker and turned to face the small crowd of people that had gathered.

"They need you Skaali, do not abandoned them after you have stripped the life they had from them. Come back Skaali and help me help them." Hex paused. "Come back and help me...please."

Hex slumped down and started to look upon the crystal. She faintly reached out with her power to see what she could do but she did not want to do the wrong thing. It seemed that as of late that was all she was doing. She had to stop running head first without her head.

In punching Skaali her anger had been sedated, although perhaps the price had not been worth it. Hex was unsure if Skaali was going to turn back and reenter the room. Hex waited a flicker. Eyeing the girl she passed in the hallway she looked to her and the throng around her.

"Tell me good people, what shall you do with this new day upon us?"

He heard her cries as he walked. They reached his ears but not his heart. Still, he turned to face them at the threshold of the room. He held his hand over the place where she had struck him. Even now, it was beginning to turn color and swell.

"All I have done is break the chains that held them." He said softly, almost tenderly.

"Tomorrow my warriors and I will set out and seek the destruction of the Brenna. I don't have the faintest notion of what you will do."

He dropped his hand to his side, already his eye was nearly swollen shut. The open one glanced over at Langredoc and his naked weapons, and then back at Hex.

"Remember your mark on me daughter of the Bergliin. I owe you a return strike now, and mine will not be so gentle."

After that, if words were wanted with him, he would have to be sought out, for he left the room and the temple behind, no matter what was called out after him.

The men, women and children stared at Hex, uncertain and hesitant. One snapped off the head of his mop, and with a quick unsheathing of his knife, he began to sharpen it into a spear. These were a people of battle and they began to wordlessly shuffle out to face it once more.

The power of the Brenna was almost alien when Hex reached out to it. A note of shrill discord returned to her from the thing. It felt hotter the instant she tried it and it almost burned with a black, acidic fire. Clearly this was nothing she'd ever seen or heard of before, and now that Skaali's power was fading from it, it was growing hotter still.

Hex stood there for a flicker.

These were hard people they could wait a moment longer for her.

"Langredoc come help me convince this fool to help us, craven bastard that he is, we need him."

Hex bolted out the door after the warlock by any other name.

Why me?

The little voice in her head laughed at her.

Langredoc growled towards Hex "I have a feeling that something bad is going to happen, I told you and you don't listen !"

Then for a flicker after Hexe's words he sighed looked at her face muttered something about the diplomat of the netherworld and dashed after Skaai and Hex.

"Hey Skaai." the warrior shouted with a hoarse voice towards the warlock. "I am glad to see that your care for your people a lot. Its painted all over the walls of this place. I just wonder who's slave you are. Because so far I have seen not someone who grants freedom and bloody unity, but a powermonger ready to sacrifice any hope for a sparkle of power."

Langredoc spat some blood out of his mouth, the after effects of his encounter with the #$$%#@#@ of a !@#@#$$$% still effecting his speech.

"And can you wait so I can use a normal voice please ? You wanted to sacrifice my blood right. Well by forcing me to shout you already did."

Langredoc had finally figured out that the man was as much a magic wielder as Hex, and magic wielders where powermongers, it explained a lot. The question was more, how did he end up in a struggle for power ? Sheer dumb luck !!

Then he snarled at Hex "Oh and I have a VERY bad feeling about that Crystal !! So please get rid of it, I dont care what you do, you can even throw it against the back of that guys (he pointed at skaai) head, you are all so frozen in your idea's that negotiation is a dirty word and building is only done with your lovely ice and that melts WHEN TEMPERS FLAIR!!!"

He coughed and spit some more blood out, wondering if something was really damaged in his lungs.

Hex stopped. She stopped her flight and took her advisor's advice.

"Thank you Langredoc, thank you." Hex's head had stopped spinning and even though she felt she had lost something, something was gained. At least she was here, in this place to help her fellow people.

She let out a sigh and turned to those shuffling out as she walked back into the chamber.

"Is there any here that will go with Skaali?"

It was a simple question. One that hex asked as she undid the clasp that held her heavy cloak and threw it to the seat of the Kona. Hex did not choose that seat, she had not even looked, it was just the seat she was passing at that time.

All told, there had been a score of people in the Temple when they had arrived. With the conversation, and subsequent argument afterwards, there were perhaps a dozen left by the time Hex asked her question of them.

It was a difficult thing to gauge, their reactions. Skaali's deeds had done more than cause a few dozen deaths, it had also ignited a people's spirit. Centuries of rule by the Kona and her council had beaten many down, crushed their independence, and caused them to feel and act as slaves. But Skaali had cut through that, and many would follow him for no other reason. There were many that viewed his actions as necessary, to restore the north to the old ways, back to the days and customs they followed before the Kona took comtrol and united the clans.

And there were some, that their will had been so far entrenched in the ways and traditions of the Kona, that life without one was a terrifying experience. These were the ones that held close to the temple now, not straying too far from it's boundaries and the comfort of it's walls. These were ones that Hex addressed now, that did nothing else but try and clean it's floors, and maintain the old look of the place, because the changes the Embol brought were too hard for them to accept.

They stared at her, mutely. Unable to cope with what she was asking. One woman began to weep. Others, simply stared on in silence. One man stood up.

"The ones who have chosen the Embol have gone from this place." He said sadly. "We will stay and fight to protect the temple. To honor the memory of our fallen Kona. To keep to the ways that she set for us."
