Market Square (Jygust 30th, TT)

Post by Illithane »

The Market Square is situated in the heart of Dort and is essential to this burgeoning town. Close to Watertown and the harbor, this is where merchants, caravans, farmers and anyone seeking commerce comes upon their arrival in Dort. Not only does the Market Square attract the local villagers, it is a global meeting place for all those who wants to purchase or sell commodities. The Dortenese prosperity and abundance depends largely on the business with both inland and external vendors.

Small businesses and shops display their goods outside in an inviting show to attract customers. The owners exclaim their superiority proudly and neighbors are fierce competitors. Then there are the farmers with their harvest and animal who simply try to make a living. New business emerge here constantly, and the opportunities are endless and the competition equal.

Around the Market Square there are situated several Inns and Taverns, mostly inhabited with rich and powerful merchants, nobles and travelling digitaries hoping to cut a deal. Outside these fancy taverns there are tables set up where the bargaining is continuously present. Harsh and unforgiving phrases are hurled and paralleled with luxurious offers. Colleagues become enemies, and enemies become colleagues.

In the ominous, narrow alleys running in and out from the Market Square, known as the Knot, the more questionable business of unlawful dealers and smugglers are present here as well. This is widely known and whether they have been bribed or or are simply ignorant, the citywatch do little to prevent it.

This is not all that the Market Square has to offer though. Among the many taverns and other entertainment outlets are the Temple of Blessed Wealth, the Hot Springs and the Von-zu Dort-Billigh House of Theatre, all within easy walking distance.

In the centre of the Market Square is a symbol of the modernization of Dort, as well as an enduring symbol of the faith of the city. A towering, gleaming statue of Pecunia stands tall and strong surrounded by the magnificent construction of the Aquaduct, which provides fresh water to the entire city and its population in a series of beautiful cascading waterfalls. The city watch regularly move hawkers and merchants from setting up their stalls and booths too close to the statue, and watch all who go near with a wary eye, and the sea birds glide and soar overhead.

He had something specific in mind - well... specific in a broad sense. Illithane had strolled into the Market Square that afternoon in good spirits, with the hopes of finding something magickal. The adhiel was on the lookout for an item, any item that looked like it had special properties. His gaze scanned the crowds of people like a hawk, watching as they peddled their wares. Of course, the male didn't really expect a whole stall with a big sign that read 'Magick Antiquities' on it, but then... you never know. In fact, Illithane was just as much looking for an item itself as he was someone who might know of such things.

He paused for a moment to hear a merchant speak, sure he heard something about mystical effects, but once the man went on about "growing as tall as a god", he moved on. Illithane took his time, in no real hurry, breathing in all the smells, taking in all the sights. This was quite a bit of change from Kings Court, but it was a pleasant one. Yes, the adhiel thought to himself as he kept alert, searching for that one item or clue, he was going to like it here.

The Market Square was even more hectic than usual. Colourful bunting was hanging across every street in preparation for the Midsummer Festival that eveningtide, and many vendors were closed for the day in celebration, but at least as many were still open, unwilling to lose the opportunity for the lucrative tourist trade.

Illithane's expectations were proving correct. Items with enchantments placed upon them or other magickal properties were very hard to come by, and several burns in the marketplace didn't suffice for him to spot anything that looked genuine. Such deals were simply not carried out in the open of the market, but rather behind closed doors, and the shops around the square, despite their opulence, didn't appear to offer what he was looking for. High class butchers, bakers, patisseries and wine cellars could all be found, but no shops that obviously traded in magickal goods.

Other avenues remained to be pursued. On one side of the square, a narrow maze of dark streets ran off in the general direction of the harbour. These too contained shops, although of a seedier, more esoteric nature. On the other side, the looming bulk of a massive stone dome could be seen, enough to cover an entire district of the city. Rumour had it this was Darktown, the district belonging solely to the mysterious dark adhiel.

Several interesting messages could be seen posted in various locations around the square. Most were in Human, but some were also written in Adhiel. Most common was the following:

The other sign wasn't so frequently found, and was much briefer.
