Pax: Portal, 30th of Jygust, Late Trade Tide

Post by Michel Carbonneau »

The portal was unusually large, created to let through wagons and horses as well as humans. The cost in magick energy and thus in crowns must have been immense, especially considering the short time in which it was set up. Once every while the portal blinked and let through the occasional traveler or courier.

The spectacular artifact opened into what could only be somewhat of anticlimax. Although the city of Pax had grown from little more than one dusty road with a couple of wooden sheds, and had filled out some, it was still a slightly jumbled city to the first-time observer. Rackety buildings and larger, neatly made, wooden shops were equally interspersed along either side of the street. Some buildings seemed an odd conglomeration of wood and stone, as if the builder couldn't decide which they prefered, and an otherwise normal building might have odd stretches of stone criss-crossing it at random, jutting out with all-stone extensions, or upwards with small turret-like bits.

The Provost Office, clearly the Administrative Headquarters of the city, stood to one side of the Portal, where a soldier in a Royal Blue uniform stood.

Main street stretched a fair little ways to either side of the portal, and it was clear further streets stretched into other little byways at regular (and sometimes random) intervals.

Beyond the main street the spectacular view of snowpeaked mountains called immediate attention, for they rose even beyond the aged stone wall that rose solemnly about the city.

Michel walked to the portal and stood still in front of it for a few flickers as he looked out over Pax. He felt it, things were changing. It had begun. He would never look at this place in the same way again. The commander inhaled deeply before he walked over to the guard and waited for the man to salute him. "Good day, private. I'm here for the summer festival." Michel smiled. "If I'm not mistaken, my arrival has been expected, yes?"

OOC: In anticipation of the outcome of the Stirring up Trouble thread, I'm going to be posting here. Assume that any information Brytan has / will get will be passed on to Michel, saves me having to type everything out as I find out in real time ;).

Brytan had not been waiting by the gate as he had planned. The events at the Gate had cost him a lot of time as he tried to figure out how much of the operation was compromised. His first priority was with his men, but of similar importance was knowing if there were enemies lurking in the woodworks. Enemies that might pose a threat to the plans of Michel and Ulder.

As such he did not arrive at the portal till after Michel had stepped through. Instead of immediately rushing up to meet him, he waited in the shadows of a building across from the portal, by the tavern. If all had gone as planned, his men would be posted around the perimeter. His eyes spied the dark corners and alleys aswell as the streets around the portal. He had left marks on some of the buildings where he wanted people to be. A little chalk here, a little symbol there. Only when he was certain there were no unpleasant surprises waiting for them, would he proceed.

It was a pleasantly warm and cloudless scene that greeted Michel as he stepped through the portal. And yet, there was a detectable feeling of tension in the air. Two guards stood to either side of the portal and several more lounged on the nearby verandah of the Provost Office. Two lines of troops stood to attention in front of a street that led alongside the Provost Office to the barracks. The overall impression was that area around the portal was being much more heavily guarded than usual.

The Commander was approached and then saluted by a nervous-looking guard. “Welcome to Pax, Commander. There will be a room for you no doubt in the noble’s quarters. Would you like me to escort you there?”

**************************************************************************************
Brytan was still a little way from the portal when his progress was interrupted by the staggering figure of a young woman who fell into him from a nearby alley. The woman was heavily made-up with a low cut and revealing dress. She had every appearance of being one of the whores from the Gate tavern.

She draped herself over Brytan. “Hello, sir, like to have a good time?” Hot, stale breath washed over his face.

Brytan was slightly appalled by the smell that seemed to linger around the woman. He had smelled it often while spending many long eveningtides in inns scrounging for information, but still one never completely got used to it. When he was drunk, at least he didn't smell himself, which was probably for the better.

Also, what with the occurances of earlier, he didn't entirely trust the sudden appearance of the woman. Sure he was close to her snoozing ken, but still. With the talk of infiltrators one could never be too certain, so he decided to put her to a little test.

"Sorry love, did your aunt tell you to come amuse me, or did the pigs set you up with a click on me? Either way, with me yer likely to get scratched."*

He took her arms and moved them away from him gently, checking to see if she wasn't armed. If she was a "legit" hooker she'd know what he had said, if not, his blades were a short grab away.

*Thieves Cant for; Sorry love, did the madam at the brothel tell you to come trick me out of some coin or did the guards put a hit out on me and sent you? Either way, with me you're very likely to get hurt.

It was good to see that the security had been heightened around the gates. Apparently Brytan had done his work well. Michel had expected nothing less from the man, he was a great officer. The commander greeted the guard and denied the offer. "No, thank you, private. I have business elsewhere in town and will not be needing a room. You can stay here, I will find my way."

He started walking away from the portal, towards the Nether's Gate tavern. hey hadn't set up a meeting place, but he thought he would run into either Ulder or Brytan sooner or later.

As Brytan spoke, the woman became still and did not struggle as she allowed him to move her arms away. She had a puffy face, heavy with make-up; yet, even in the gloom of the street her eyes sparkled. A pair of green eyes, set in a face that showed a hint of amusement.

“Such naughty words from a gentleman,” she chided, swaying as if she could scarcely stand on her feet, moving her head closer to Brytan.

“Message for you, sir; some of your men are captured. Got too close for their own good. Held in the house with the white fence by the forest gate. Dipper thought you might like to know; sends his regards.” She gave the ex-soldier a peck on the cheek before continuing her way, staggering down the street.

As Michel made his way towards the tavern, he caught sight of the encounter between his comrade and the woman, although he was too far away to see what transpired.

Brytan found himself smiling as the woman kissed him on the cheek and departed. His tides out on the streets of Pax had lent him friends or at least allies he did not know about. It was good to know that his informants and the local hired help* had him in higher regard than he could have imagined, or they wouldn't have sent a hole** to him out in the open.

He couldn't help but check if his coin purse was still in place. If he had been in her shoes, he'd have at least tried for it. At that flicker he noticed Michel walking in his general direction. The streets around the portal square were positively swarming with soldiers. Enough to go to the house she mentioned and get his men out. Brytan could not help but wonder how much good it would do to go to the forest gate with guns blazing however.

Instead of walking up to Michel to greet him he looked around to see if he had been watched, and who if any of the men around the square he had placed there undercover were missing. If his men had been compromised, captured even, who knows what details the enemy might have. This would give Michel ample opportunity to approach him, his thoughts racing over the new information he had been given.

Remarkably, Brytan’s pockets appeared to be intact; the woman had not used the opportunity to relieve him of the coins he had in his possession – clearly she was no ordinary whore or thief.

As he looked quickly around the square, he noted the location of some half a dozen or so of his men in their allotted places, less than half that he might have expected. Of course some may have been delayed for other reasons but on the surface it appeared as if the whore’s information had some substance.

Michel frowned as he saw Brytan with the woman, but he didn't think too much of it on first glance. He knew how the women could be. They were always looking for a chance to make some quick money.

Not aware of the situation in the town, Michel approached Brytan with a grin as he saw that the woman was leaving. He walked up to the officer and nodded, forgoing the official salutes. Something that didn't need to be done between them, especially in public like this. "Good to see you alive and well, my friend. I was just about to step into the tavern to grab some food and go looking for you to discuss the situation. How is everything going?"

"Bad." Brytan wasn't one for formalities either and with all the things on his mind he decided to get straight to the point. He checked to make sure they were not within earshot of anyone in particular.

"We best get off the streets to somewhere that does not include a whole bunch of people. My guys are getting knifed in the alleyways and some are holed up in a pen somewhere." He could think of a few places they could go. He didn't fancy going to the Nether's Gate after what had happened there earlier. The barracks would be the safest bet. After what he had been told, he could safely assume his own cover was compromised aswell, so there was no point in pretending anymore.

"Let's take this off the streets..." he spoke before turning to return to the barracks from where he had just come flickers earlier.

It was only a short distance to the barracks and there was nothing to impede Brytan or Michel if they journeyed in that direction. Three guards were stationed at the entrance; all looked edgy and were glancing nervously up and down the street.

One of the guards stepped forward to challenege anyone requiring entrtance.

"Who goes there! Please state your name and business." The guard was a tall, rough-looking fellow whom neither Brytan nor Michel would recognise.

Michel nodded as he agreed with Brytan that they would best keep the serious talk private. The look on his face turned grim as the man already let him know that the situation was bad. This isn't good...I need to wrap things up here. Kings Court is the main prize.

They walked over to the barracks and when they were addressed by the unfamiliar guard, Michel grinned. The commander had already fallen for that kind of trap this morning and he didn't want to fall for the same trap twice in a day. He looked straight into the eyes of the guard, preparing himself for a quick response to any sign of an ambush. "I am Michel Carbonneau, Commander of the western kingdom army and the legion Pax Honestus. And who are you?"

“Commander…,” the guard spluttered, his eyes opening wide and mouth dropping open. “I …am ..er Jasten, Private Jasten.” At close quarters Michel could see that the guard was somewhat poorly dressed as if he had just slung on his clothes and there was a faint whiff of alcohol on his breath. Strangely, the guard offered no salute, possibly overawed by the presence of the Commander. His two companions held back but appeared somewhat uneasy, fidgeting as they stood at the gate.

Michel noted all the things that were wrong about this guard and summarized it in his head. He didn't know him, he was poorly dressed, he had been drinking quite some alcohol and he offered no salute. If the events of that morningtide were any hint of what he should be looking for, than all the alarmbells should be going off by now. Yet he didn't have time for all this freaking bullshit. He had to do what he came here to do and then get his ass back to Kings Court.

His face showed his impatience and his displeasure. "Private Jasten. Go get your superior officer and bring him here immediately." He didn't utter another word and the look on his face was stone cold. This was no time for jokes, quick and dirty was the way to go.

The inebriated guard spluttered for a few flickers but then nodded his head and vanished into the barracks. A burn or two later, he returned with a stiff-backed and surprisingly young-looking sergeant.

The sergeant saluted his commander and spoke in a clipped but cultured voice. "Commander. How may I help you, sir?"

Brytan stood by Michel's side somewhat annoyed. The expression on his face was most likely similar to Michel's. The guards at the barracks were of a completely different breed than he was. He was not a guard. He had spent half or more of his life dodging guards and even now it felt quite unnatural to just walk up to them. It helped that he had Michel with him.

As the exchange of commands took place, Brytan watched with some amusement as the guard stumbled off to get his sergeant. Not that he enjoyed seeing such a ramshackle excuse for a soldier, but it always amused him when Michel bossed people around.

Since he wasn't wearing any army colors he just waited patiently to see what would happen, refusing to salute. The few soldiers outside his contingent who knew he even was Pax Honestus usually didn't greet him with similar honors anyway.

Michel didn't like the look of the new sergeant one bit. His spiders senses were going off more and more. First the unknown, sloppy dressed guard, then an unknown, very young-looking sergeant. At least this one saluted.

The commander saluted back. "Are you in charge of the guards, sergeant? Because the one that was standing here was not known to me, he wasn't dressed properly. Plus, he had the smell of alcohol on him." Michel stepped closer to the sergeant, wanting to be able to smell if there was any trace of alcohol on the sergeant as well. "Tell me, sergeant. How is that possible?"

There was no smell of alcohol discernible on the breath of the sergeant who didn’t flinch as Michel stepped closer. The young soldier directed a look of disdain at the inebriated private.

“Get back into the barracks and dress yourself properly, private. I will deal with you later.” The sergeant spoke in a quiet but authoritative voice. The ill-dressed soldier hesitated for a flicker but then made his way back into the barracks.

“My apologies, Commander. I have only just come onto my shift. Some of the men have obviously got carried away with the festival. I will see that he is severely punished. How may I assist you, sir?”

Michel kept an emotionless expression on his face. He wasn't impressed and he had no time for bullshit like this today. "Bring sergeants Erlich and Thomas to me. I will be needing them during my stay here." Erlich and Thomas were two of the officers he knew quite well and he trusted them. More than the unknown ones here. Since there was a lot depending on this day, the commander decided he would keep two of his loyal officers with him as his personal protection today.

Once the sergeants would have arrived, they would all go to Michel's office in the barracks and Brytan and Michel could talk in private while the sergeants could guard them.

OOC:
I assume since he spent quite some time on getting to know the men during the recess, that there are at least two sergeants around that he knows quite well and whom he can trust.

“I am afraid that Sergeant Erlich met with an accident yesterday and is incapacitated,” explained the young sergeant. “I believe that Sergeant Thomas is available.”

The sergeant dispatched one of the guards to fetch Thomas and the veteran sergeant arrived a few flickers later. He looked pleased, if not a little relieved, to see Michel. Thomas would escort Brytan and Michel to the commander's small office in the barracks, leaving the young sergeant and remaining guards at the gate.

The office was a small room containing a table, chairs and few shelves along which were scattered books, ledgers and a few maps. A few small tapestries covered part of the smooth, white stone walls and several shields hung along one sidewall.

Sergeant Thomas agreed to stand guard but intimated that he would like to have a word with the Commander as soon as he had finished his business with Brytan.

OOC: Ok, since the injured guard is the third one that has something going on, Michel isn't going to the office as he hears that.

IC:
As soon as Michel heard the news about sergeant Erlich being incapacitated, all of his alarm bells were ringing. This was way too much coincidence to be just a coincidence. The look on his face turned dark as night. The commander waited for sergeant Thomas to arrive before saying anything else. The sign if relief on Thomas' face was one more hint that something was really wrong here.

Michel smiled as he saw Thomas. "Sergeant Thomas! It's good to see you again! Please, stay here. I would like to have a talk with you." He then turned towards the young sergeant and the look on his face turned to stone again. "Sergeant. I want a full inspection of the troops. Bring them out here on the double. I want to see the status on the entire legion with my own eyes. Right now."

The young sergeant’s face lit up with consternation at Michel’s request. “Most of the on-duty guards are spread throughout the city in case of trouble,” he explained in a haltering voice. “Those off-duty are at the festival and so we only have a handful here, perhaps twenty men.” With his brief explanation finished, the sergeant ran off to do Michel’s bidding.”

“Sir, if I might speak, with you in private,” said Thomas as soon as the young sergeant had vanished. He motioned with the thumb of his hand in the direction of the remaining gate guards, as if he did not wish them to overhear his words.

Michel took a deep breath and resisted rolling his one eye. He had come here to free Pax and by that, freeing up men from the legion which he could use in Kings Court. If the men were such a mess, then that last part of the plan was no good. Maybe it was time to rethink his strategies....

Thomas pulled him away from his thoughts. "Follow me." He said as he nudged Thomas and Brytan to walk away from the guards, so that they wouldn't be able to hear them. Once they were at a safe distance, he continued, laying a hand on Thomas's shoulder. "What is it sergeant? You can say anything to me in front of Brytan. I trust him completely."

Brytan had been here not too long ago, not bothering with the state of the guard at the barracks. The strange reactions Michel seemed to invoke with these people made him wonder what they were going to hear. If Foreno's men had gotten to these guys, perhaps it was wisest to just discard them entirely and go with those still loyal to him and Michel.

While they followed the sergeant to the side, Brytan already started thinking up ways to contact his people as soon as possible. Now that Michel was in town, and the only quick access to the town and exit to King's Court was secure, they should push their plans ahead. It pained him that some of his men were held or had even been killed, but that was the risk they were all aware they would take doing this kind of gruntwork for the army. They were wasting time with these ignorant assholes and Brytan's dagger finger was itching.

Regardless, he remained silent and kept a close eye on the sergeant aswell as the others in the room while Michel focussed on the soldier. No one was going to be sneaking up on them in the middle of their conversation or try to take them down without a fight.

The veteran sergeant took a deep breath to compose himself before answering Michel’s query.

“Lieutenant Tamerton left fifty men here at the barracks in reserve, sir. He was worried about trouble tonight. I was out on business and whilst I was away, a new contingent of guards arrived under a Lieutenant no-one had ever seen. Claimed they were re-enforcements. They ordered some of the men here to join a patrol with them outside the city. Lieutenant Tamerton wasn’t here and with Erlich injured, no-one sought to question the order. All we have left here are a few men who were sick or on some reprimand or other.”

“If there was any trouble, sir, we’d have a devil of a job defending the barracks, or sending out any men to help with trouble throughout the city. Doesn’t make sense to have so many men outside the walls.”
