Jacob opened the door and ushered Sfein in quickly, looking to make sure no one saw him enter.

Without a word Jacob pointed to a chair and paced up a down for a few flickers, glancing at Sfein now and again.

Suddenly he stopped, faced Sfein and spoke, "There is no easy way to say this, but I want you to say nothing until you hear me out", he paused, licked his lips then began to pace again and continued talking

"I am not happy with how the Lady Isabella has treated me, I've now had to marry her, she says she is with child, but I do not believe it. And that, that sailor, Bill, is really a noble. I don't know why he hides here, but I will, I will".

Realising he had rambled off a bit he stopped, and stared hard into Sfeins eyes, "You have had your run-ins here, I know and I want you to do something for me, if you can. It will be a lot of money for you, you will not need to struggle with a bards life".

Jacob pulled a chair over and sat in front of Sfein, "I want you to give me my revenge, I want you to kill that Sailor and Isabella for me, before we get to Dort, they must look like accidents, no suspicion must fall on you or me".

Jacob grasped Sfein by the arm, "I also want you to try and relieve Alazias of a letter he has given to him by the captain, that is most important"

He took a deep breath and stood up, "will you do this for me, you will be greatly rewarded. If you do not, and speak to anyone of what was said here, I will have you killed".

"So what is you answer"?

The barbarian bard-to-be listened to the nobleman.
He married the slave woman? Why? Because she said she was pregnant? That was ridiculous.
'I must go now, to witness a ceremony'
the words from Alazais resounded in his head.
so the bard had known?

Kill the wench and the big sailor? He could consider that.
But wait...
Steal a letter from Alazais, his leader? That was treason.
Did this nobleman not know that a Waelkyrige had his honor?

When count Jacob threatened him, the barbarian smiled.
A dangerous smile, as those who knew him would recognize.

"With your threat you almost ruined it, de Besnie. I don't like threats. And neither do I like stupidity. So listen to me without interruption, like I listened to you."
he rose up from the chair, and using his full length he stared down at the nobleman.

"I will not, kill anybody just because a potential employer is angry and acting in the rush of his anger. Nor will I betray my leader, and steal from him. BUT...
I do not like what happens on this ship, I don't like the captain who has no honor, and I don't like mischief in general. Your, what seems now your wife, has been plotting with that big sailor, Bill, from the moment we got on board. I actually thought they were lovers, considering the way they looked at each other. So I might help you... That is, if you can put your hunger for action aside for the moment. You must hammer your anger into a weapon. If you make war, you must defeat your opponent totally.
If you want me to attack them, tell me, does she know you? Can she predict that you likely will try something like an assault? And even if she does not predict this, you and I will be seen as the most likely actors when something happens to her and Bill.
No, if you want to strike, and you want my help, then we must think first."

Vaguely Sfein was aware of his own voice speaking, his own voice yes, but not his usual self. As if someone else was speaking. The cynical voice and vocabulary from the bard who teached him about the Land of Stories.

"First I want some answers. I need to know who is the enemy, suppose I kill one, who is the person behind the potential retaliation?
So my first question is: who are the actors?

Let's start with Isabella, I thought she was your slave, as I heard you talking about owning her contract. marrying a slave because she is pregnant is ridiculous. So if she is not a slave, what was she? A prostitute?
if that is the case, then I hope she is one from the guilds, like the Roses, as that will make it easy to get her killed. After all, which nobleman wants to make use of the services of the guild if the guild clearly abuses the trust you place on their discretion? So such a guild has to perform the strongest punishment possible to keep it's reputation.
And I need to know, is she really pregnant? Or more specific, was she really convinced that she was pregnant? Because if she lies, which you can find out with the help of some priests, the whole situation is different, as you are clearly the victim of a plot; and the marriage, the FORCED mariage is built on a lie.
Will she kill?
Perhaps it is a plot to kill you, first she marries you, gets your title, and then your heritage so to speak, as you will experience an 'accident' in the near future.
What are her powers? I noted something strange, but I am not certain. If she is a witch, she is clearly dangerous, but on the other hand, it will make your case that she abused you, and perhaps the other persons on this ship as well, stronger.
Then there is this Bill. You must find out who he is, as he might have started this plot to get you married with her from the beginning. Why is he your enemy? How strong is he? If guess that if he really is a nobleman, he will have some weapon skills as well. Or he has even some of his servants working on this ship, disguised as sailors.
Who did marry you? I am not aware of a real priest on this ship, was it the captain? I don't like that dog, but I would like to know his motive.
After all, he risks his ship and trade by marrying a passenger, a nobleman even, against his will. It is the same as with the guild. If important people can no longer trust to be safe as passengers on a ship... I mean, he could marry his ugly niece to a passenger, as a plot to make his family rich. No authority on the shore would accept that either. Which basically shows that this marriage can not be valid anyway"

Suddenly Sfein's voice changed, became somehow emotionless, but as a paradox, much more sinister. It was what the barbarian would call 'The Voice': smearing honey on a soul who thirsted for revenge, blowing fresh air onto the fires of Jacob's soul...
"So, did they invoke the gods in the ritual? Because if they did, and it was unjustified, you can curse them. Did you know that?"

The barbarians voice changed back into normal
"You asked me to steal a letter from Alazais. He is my leader, so doing such a thing is treason.
Unless... Unless the man has no honor. He was there at the ceremony right? Why was he there, why did he cooperate? After all, if you are a powerful nobleman, you can close several of his potential places to give a show, or even worse, put him into a dark dungeon. So why would he take the risk, and support a forced wedding that smells the foul smell of..."
'witchcraft' he wanted to say, but that was nonsense. Political intrigue, was more likely. Or was he Sfein, paranoid, and was this simply an act of a streetwise girl that took revenge on the man that abused her?
Perhaps it was.
But no, it smelled.
And Alazais acted weird.
And he, Sfein, did dislike the captain. The man had attacked him.
For no reason.
"kill em all" said the voice in his head.
So he stared down at Jacob de Besnie.
"I won't tell anyone that you asked me to kill them" he spoke finally. "But if you want my help, give me answers to these questions."

Jacob listened stunned at what seemed rambling statements and then to question him! that did not sit well, and the calculating hard Jacob rose to the challenge.

"Young man, I have asked you to do a job for me for which you will be handsomely paid. Why, is my business, who the lady was, is also my business, and whether she is pregnant or not, and the reasons behind the marriage is also my business".

He paused and took a breath, "That Bill is a noble is all you need to know, and probably versed in some fighting technique. The Lady has a power of sorts, it is little, a calm trained mind could defend against it".
She was much stronger than that, Jacob Knew to his own cost, but the Trothgarder must not know, and think she is weak

He continued, "As for the Letter, I understand your reluctance against your master, but has he not betrayed you? although I have not heard what was said, I have seen words between you. He came willingly and openly supported this marriage". that was also a lie, as Jacob knew alazias was there only to witness, but again the trothgarder must not know that

Jacob Walked to the door, and turned to face Sfein once more, "Enough of this talk, You do as I ask and be rewarded, or not. Make Plans if you wish, but keep my name out of it. If they are dead before we reach Dort, you future is assured, if not, then you will probably die a bannerless Bard or perhaps a poor mercenary".

He pointed to the door, "Now unless you have any more questions, I think you should go, and decide what you want, riches or nothing".

"He is a weakling, not a leader" said Sfein's inner cynical voice. "You'd better never enter a battle under his command. This is the man that falls into any trap. And look, he never even defines the so called great reward."

Sfein stood up.
"Does the man really think that I will kill a slavegirl he wants killed because she outsmarted him?" he thought. "The risks are huge, the reward uncertain, and from a moral perspective I am not convinced that it is right."

"I am not your servant, nor for sale. I also did not join Alazais for riches. You are the one that has a problem, but it is clear to me that you won't listen to reason."
So the Trothgarder left the cabin. That man was a born looser, probably kept alive due to his title and the money that some of his more clever ancestors provided to him.

While he closed the door one could hear him saying: "And regarding my master, I will speak with him as I am not certain about betrayal."

Jacob watched Sfein leave, thoughts running around his mind.
fool, he deserves nothing, rambling on like that. I was obvious wrong in thinking he could serve me. He is not in his right mind methinks.

Jacob paced up and down thinking hard.
It is unlikely now that I can get that letter, without recourse to force and if I want to dispose of that woman and sailor I will have to do find another way. Even if that trothgarder changes his mind, I cannot trust him.

Leaving his room Jacob stormed up to the deck. Once more he stood near the prow of the ship, his thoughts his own as he watched the sun getting ever closer to the horizon.

OOC to Sfein: I am creating an OOC thread to this IC thread so we can discuss how you are using certain information :?

IC: Isabella gave "Bill" a warm smile from deep within the hood of her cloak, flooding him with gratitude and a touch of passion. Bills ardor didn't need much to keep going, but it never hurt to keep in touch.

Upon the interruption of the cabin boy she quirked an eyebrow, surprised by this news, then gently thanked the boy with a few banners. Have you been keeping secrets from me Jacob, or are you laying a trap?. It would need careful examination. Perhaps it wasn't even from Jacob. All the more intriguing. Curiosity killed the cat, but never Isa.

With feline grace she put her hand on Bills arm "You may escort me back to my cabin mil.... master Irons."

OOC: I haven't gone straight to reading the scroll as you may want to do something else.

* Isabella *

As Bill escorted Isabella back to her room, he noticed Jacob at the prow, staring at the sun, "He was not happy Countess, you must be careful".

He escorted her to her door and as much as he wanted to follow her in, he knew he had other duties to do for the ship, and it wouldn't do to have the ship flounder because he failed in his duties.

"Countess, unfortunately I have ships duties to perform, so must leave you. There will be always be a man close by should you need help, just call out and someone will be with you very quickly".

With that he bowed, kissed Isabella's hand, and went off down the passageway.

The room was neat and tidy when Isabella entered, Christopher had done a good job, and there on the bed was the scroll.

Slightly yellow with age, and a tear or two on the edges, tied with a red ribbon, it had obviously laid where it was found for a few Yahren.

Behind her through the open door, the sound of footsteps went by and stopped a little way down the hall, if Isabella listened real hard she could just hear quiet breathing.

Isa reacted to Bills softly uttered warning with just the barest of nods. When they had a bit more privacy below deck she turned to him, leaning in slightly more close than was proper. There was a delicious tension in the air, as if William contemplated for a moment to give in once more to his passions. His sense of duty however, won out. Isabella admired him for it even when she gave a slight pout and a tiny sigh as he was forced to step away. "Thank you for your concern master Irons," the darkhaired seductress breathed as she watched him turn and walking away.

Isabella closed the door and was all business again, her attention on the scroll that lay there so invitingly on the bed. Now if only I had learned at the Rose how to take precautions in cases like this. Even though it doesn't look like it is from Jacob, there is always the possibility the scroll was guarded against intruders in some other way.. say with poison. For it contains a secret, or it would not have been hidden. It was the secret that made the item so intriguing of course, and Isa could feel herself burst with curiosity.

After some thought Isabella picked some white gloves out of her chest and then daringly touched the red ribbon on the scroll, opening it carefully to see if she could read the contents. In the back of her mind she kept her senses at the ready, relying on her powers to warn her of the approach of people, yet she concentrated on the scroll and its alluring secret first.

The ribbon came undone cleanly, no sparks, flashes or indeed anything remotely dangerous. In fact Isabella's care in opening the scroll was not needed. It was indeed just a scroll.

As it unrolled, Isabella found the following written upon it.

I Count Marcus De Companio, being of sound mind, make this my last will and testament.
Long Have I sought my son, only to find he had departed this world and now lives with his God, I now have no heir.
I therefore pen this will for the disposal of my assets, currently held in trust by and as agreed with, Caeser.
All my extensive properties, land, money and Title, shall belong to the person who hands this scroll to Caesar.
However that person must be female, unmarried and be without child at that time.
If this scroll is not presented before Yulember 1st 1224 by someone who meests the conditions, then this will is null and void and all my assets will become under the control of Caesar.

Penned this 10th day of Darkenry 1221.

OOC: as per your agreement we'll assume she has heard some minor details from sweet Raoul.

IC: Isabella sat down on the bed as she read the document and when she was finished she threw herself backwards, sprawled on the carefully made up bed, her black hair spread around her. A fit of giggles escaped the Countess and she could only stop when she realized she was getting hysterical.

De Campanio; a respected family in the Citadel, going back more generations than the Ceasar himself. Raoul had mentioned them casually, or rather their absence and the rumors associated with it. Apart from giving an insight in the Ceasars finances it hadn't seemed important to her then. Now Isabella wished she had paid more attention. All she knew was that the family was wealthy, very wealthy, but more importantly.. it was old blood.

The De Bessnie's weren't old blood. Technically they were first generation upstarts who had replaced the Tyrant in Muchisilie. yet their power in the Seven Isles through trade and shipbuilding was enormous. Isabella now had become part of that family, with a possibility (one that with a sinking feeling Isa realized might have become a very real possiblity instead of a convenient lie due to her uncareful phrasing of her wish to her mischevious god) that she could become regent to the only heir of the De Bessnies. It would take careful planning, and a lot of hard work to outdo Jacobs brothers and above all his mother, but it could be done. Isa knew it would be very satisfying to gain control of the collection of isles she called home, yet it was an unsure future that was by no means certain. Instead.. the family De Campiano was offered to her on a platter.

Oh Pan milord, how fickle you are. Is this your doing? A practical joke on one of your most devout followers? All that power within my grasp yet made impossible by my own selfish acts.

Isa picked up the testament again and read it more carefully now, rolling to her side. Maybe not entirely outside reach. A widow is not married and whether or not she was pregnant remained to be seen. Her marriage would probably be declared null and void if she wasn't, but that would take longer than the time alloted to her to stake this other claim.. I need to control the flow of information. There are three copies of the marriage act. I need to own all three of them. Either it would serve to thrown suspicion of murder on her or it could possibly stand in her way of gaining this prize for other reasons. The Ceasar, or rather his advisors, would not be keen to relinquish the holdings. Isa realized she would have to hurry.. Yulember was only 2 weeks away.

Isabella k new she had to talk to William soon. Yet she had no clue what she would tell him. The truth, or spin another tale? Patiently the dark haired lady awaited eveningtide.

Jacob stared at the falling sun, eveningtide approached and suddenly it was there. Fool, I'm the fool, of course thats the answer"

He turned on his heels and made his way to his cabin. As he looked at Isabellas closed door, he couldn't help but chuckle. You think you have gained one over me, your triumph is short lived my dear.

When he entered the room he went straight for his trunk and searched through the papers there, "YES", he shouted triumphantly as he found what he was looking for.

Clutching the document tightly he left his room slamming the door closed. With another glance at Isabella's door and no more than a half a glance at the sailor further down the hall, he strode purposefully to the captains cabin.

Anyone seeing him would be amazed at the change, he now had a spring in his step, a smile and a glint in his eye. It was the Jacob of old, back again and without a doubt in his mind, winning.

He strolled into the captains cabin, without knocking, "Before you say anything captain, I think you should read this, very carefully", said Jacob and handed captain LeBlanche the document.

* Captain LeBlanche *

The captains scathing attack on Jacob was stopped before it started when he caught sight of the document.

He read it, then twice more before turning to Jacob, "My Lord, I must apologize. I Knew she was of the rose, but I did not realise this. This changes things".

He called out, "Christopher Christopher", the young lad was there in less than a burn. "Yes Captain".

"Christopher would you please go to the room of the Lady Isabella's and of Alazias and also find Bill Irons, and ask them to come here, tell them it is of the utmost urgency. Ask the Lady to bring the handsfasting certificate, and Alazias the letter I gave him. Go on, go on".

*Isabella*

The lad christopher quickly ran to Alazias's room and knocked on the door. Alazias opened it and the Lad passed on the message. He then got to Isabellas and knocked on the door, "Milady I have a message from the captain. Would you please go to his cabin now, and bring the handfasting certificate with you".

With that christopher rushed off, looking for Bill.

*ALL* This is Bill Iron's Real name. The ONLY people (on the ship) that know that are Isabella, Captain Leblanche and Jacob.
Sfein knows Bill is a noble, but that is all.
Unless otherwise stated, All postings by William will be as Bill Irons.

IC:
It was a few flickers later that Bill entered the passageway and strode towards Isabella's door. having met Christopher just outside and got the message.

He knocked on the Door, "Countess, My Lady, It is I Bill, It seems we are summoned to the Captains cabin".

Isabella frowned as she got up from the bed. Now what? This must be something Jacob has been planning. However, it could provide the perfect opening to obtain all the documents. Wouldn't it be great to take advantage of both her newly gained status and the testament in one magnificent sweep?

Isa checked her clothing and was busy arranging her dark cloak in such a way that it made her look dramatic and withdrawn from society, when Bill knocked on the door. She opened the door and gave him a small yet anxious smile "Do you know what is up Master Irons?," the ravenhaired beauty asked with a little quiver in her voice "This sounds like the count is up to his old tricks again. I fear he might cheat me out of what is rightly mine." She held the handfasting document in her hand, while the testament was hidden in a location Jacob was unlikely to find.... deep down in her bodice.

Isabella followed Bill as he led her to the captains cabin, her thoughts tumbling. How could she keep the upper hand?

OOC: my apologies for my absence. As you know Dyfed, I was hectic with other stuff ;)

OOC: No problem Isa.

*Isabella and Bill *

As they approached the captains cabin they saw Alazias leave, he almost ignored Bill, just seemingly to see Isabella, a deep frown on his face as he passed them by.

The Captains door was open when they got there and an ordinary Sailor was there who gave a slight bow to Isabella and a respectful nod to Bill.
"your to go right in", he said closing the door after they entered.

The scene that faced them was Jacob sitting on one side, a broad smile on his face, and a concerned looking Captain Leblanche.
On the captains desk were the other two handfasting certificates and the captains letter, in his hand a larger parchment.

"My Lady", the captain began, "I am not sure how to put this but I am sorry to say that I have no choice but to nullify the handfasting ceremony performed earlier".

He sighed, "I have in my hand a contract, your contract, from the rose guild, giving control of your life to Count De Bessnie", he paused and shook his head.
"My Lady, unless Count De Bessnie gives his permission, you cannot marry, he did not give his permission so therefore the ceremony is null and void, as are these certificates".

The captain was about to continue, when he was interrupted by Jacob.

Jacob Stood up, "Enough Captain", and turned towards Isabella, "Your Scheme has failed my dear, there is no wedding and while I have your contract there never will be".

Jacob took a step closer, "I will give you your room for the rest of this trip, to allow you to think about what has happened. When we get to Dort, you will be by my side and you will do as your bidden".

"Read that, I don't think ther is much you can say, to think that I was thinking of..." he pulled himself short before finishing the sentence. He paused, a smile played on his lips, "Remember this ship is your last freedom, I have your contract and when we reach Dort, you will honor it".

With that he leaned against the wall, a look of triumph on his face.

Isabella did not hide her shock at the captains words. Surely, the Rose contract is not so restrictive. I cannot believe that Larbeido would allow students to be treated as slaves. Isa remembered Zaure's words, and how she had scoffed them, seeing the young adhiel as one only wallowing in selfpity. Now faced with a situation remarkably similar her blood froze over, her hands, one of which was still on Bills arm, going very, very cold. It didn't take long however, for Isabella's fighting spirit to surface. It was Jacobs triumph that brought back the fire in her blood, bringing it quickly to boiling point.

Only her dark eyes showed the fire within. The darkhaired lady turned to the captain first for she could not bare the snide remark of Jacob. Her voice was a hoarsh whisper "This must be a mistake. A Rose Companion is an honorable profession that has been long respected in the Citadel if not beyond. A rose is an employee, not a slave. Surely you can see that this must be a fraud. May I see the documents for myself?"

Isa didn't hesitate to send out her distress, trying to work on the captains pity. For a moment she longed to lunge out to Jacob as well, but she refrained from trying to make him feeling as miserably as possible, like she had in the dungeon. Since then she had had disturbing dreams suggesting to her much more was possible, bordering on the darkness. Isa knew she would not hesitate to use not just emotions but the energy she could see shimmering in the air to get her way. I am of the Twilight. I rejected the Light and the Darkness the Rose told herself, reassuring herself she had a right to fight for her position. It wasn't really evil to combat what Isabella thought of as abuse.

Captain LeBlanche felt sorry for the Lady Isabella, he felt the pity well up inside, his duty however was his true mistress and despite anything he knew he had no choice.
"I'm sorry my lady, here is the contract, it seems you were indentured to the Red Rose Guild for 5 years, and they sold that indenture, without change, to the Count for the remainder of the term. It appears watertight to me, enough so that I feel I have to nullify the handfasting".

With a sigh, the captain brought a chair over to Isabella to sit upon, and handed her the contract.

Slowly Isabella sat down on the chair offered to her, staring at the paper she knew so well. It was her Rose contract. A frown of confusion was on her pretty face. For she thought Larbeido had but given Jacob a service contract, leaving her to be a Rose student at the guild, while hiding among nobles from the evil of the dungeon and the crusade against Panlings and Roses.

Yet Larbeido had cast her off as an old piece of clothing. A blush crept on Isa's face as she remembered the many intimate conversations she had had with the guildmaster. She had even been ready to denounce her lover just for the Rose, for the protection and knowledge it offered. What knowledge? When she asked for the magick she needed Larbeido had cautioned her and kept her from it, even though she knew Ahren had been given all that and more, just weeks ahead of her. It was foul indeed to keep Isabella from what she needed so urgently to survive at court, as the blond sorceress that had dispelled the glamour had taught her. What protection? At the first sign of trouble he had sold her to the Muchislian count without even asking for her input. Had Isa not asked the contract to be transferred to the Office of Protocol days before? The least the guildmaster could have done was check with her if she was aware of all De Bessnie was planning... or more importantly wasn't planning.

So.. this is how good your word is Larbeido, Isa thought as a murderous rage took hold of her body. She didn't like to be tossed aside as dirty laundry. And she HATED to have Zaure proven right. Mentally Isabella put the guildmaster high on the list of people who were going to pay for this fiasco.

How A. would love this. She would forgive him a moments gloating, but only a moment. Isabella remembered the dungeon and her call to him. It had failed of course, yet now more than ever she was determined to walk the Aether to confer with him. The Rose... no, she hadn't been a Rose since Larbeido sold her she remembered miserably..

Isabella resisted the urge to crumble the contract in her hands. She looked up and her dark eyes turned to ice as she stared at Jacob "So, milord, more treachery it seems. You did not get a service contract, but bought my entire indentured contract. Not once did you mention the consequences to me. Now.. at this hour.. you suddenly remember. How convenient. Will you get rid of me now or later, while I'm heavy with your child? You know you will be the risee of the court for being less than a gentleman, but since when do you care about propriety eh?"

Isabella sighed deeply and with tear filled eyes told the captain "I respect your position sir, but this contract is null and void for more than one reason. It didn't feature in any children born from this union. At the guild pregnant Roses are returned home, released from their contract. I believe I told you so earlier, which was why I was so frantic for I believed myself a member still. I stand corrected."

There was true pain in her dark eyes before she managed to continue "Now as for the other reasons.. it is said I'd receive a number of things in exchange for my indentureship.. yet I didn't get the knowledge and protection that I was due." Her chin rose an inch "So I will most likely petition the Ceasar himself on this issue. I am after all still an assistant of the Office of Protocol, even though I was abucted from my rightful place with false promises of one who thinks he can buy love."

With a sudden movement Isabella rose from her chair, giving Jacob a last murderous look. From the bottom of her icy heart she told him "I am sorry Jacob, not for my own behavior but for your petty resistance to what you know is the right thing to do. May the gods curse you. I will never be yours like you want me to be." She didn't spit. Ladies don't spit. But by Pan's Hooves, how she wanted to.

Without looking back Isabella left the captains cabin. Her head was spinning. Now there was no way back. Jacob must die or he would destroy her reputation once they landed on Dort. The only thing she felt unsure on was how many of the witnesses had to die as well. Best to keep the affair as natural as possible. A fire perhaps? With everybody forced to abondon ship? Yet she couldn't afford any delay to returning to the citadel. The testament on her chest burned more than ever.

Jacob allowed her to talk, he wanted to gauge how she would react. Now he knew, as she left, he took the contract from her, "Mine I believe".

Watching her walk out the door he called out, "Petition all you like my dear it will do no good, I believe this is watertight", he paused then followed her out, noticing Bill Irons step in behind him, but ignored him.

He caught up with her and spoke as he passed, "You will honor the contract my dear, or you will regret not doing so". Then he strode away down the passageway to his room.

Bill Irons had listened carefully to want went on, not feeling it was his place to interrupt. Although he kept a firm eye on Jacob, and his heart fell as he saw Isabella's sorrow.

Nodding to his captain he was about to follow her out, when Jacob came by and spoke again, then followed her out.

Bill Followed closely, just in case, but apart from what was an obvious threat, he saw Jacob stride off and away, presumably to his room.

He quickly caught up with Isabella and got in step beside her, "I'm sorry my Lady, if there is anything I can do, you know you have but to ask".

He dutifully walked with her down the passageway, lending his physical support as well as his moral one.

Isabella pointedly ignored Jacob's threats, her chin high and her eyes refusing to acknowledge him with a look as he passed. However inside she was fuming and she send a carefully crafted mental barb of sheer misery at him, the desolation of love lost. Let him stew on that this gravetide and miss my warm arms forever.

When Bill joined her she let her hand rest on his arm. It was shaking slightly. Isa knew she was walking on the edge of a knife. She could not fail now, even though her acts might have far reaching consequences.

I am no longer a Rose, and so I don't have to uphold any standards or worry about consequences to the guild. All I have to look out for is myself. Yet, it can be defined as treason, even murder, if I am not careful.

The darkhaired lady waited till she arrived at her cabin and quickly entered, expecting Bill to follow right behind her. She turned and looked at him, her face reflecting the sorrow he had felt before. "William," she said breathlessly, tears shimmering in her eyes "I am in deep trouble. I need to return to the citadel immediately. Not just to petition the nullification of this damnable contract, but for... other strong compelling reasons. A great fortune awaits me if I can return before the end of Samheen." It occured to Isabella that at least her married status was taken care of. A pity.. I would have enjoyed playing the widow. Yet due to her contract she doubted she could lay claim to the inheritance she found.

Her tongue touched her red lips unconciously, her mouth suddenly dry as she came to a decision "I need posession of that contract, and I need Jacob to disappear, permanently. I regret it is necessary but... he is the only one in the citadel besides the guildmaster who knows about the fact he owns my indentured contract instead of a service contract. I cannot bear the thought of my reputation ruined It i must appear an accident so it cannot be traced to us. Of course, the knowledge about the precise nature of the contract must be surpressed or I will simply be inherited by the next in line." An uncomfortable thought even though she might be carrying Jacob's heir. I will decide later what to do about the child. Somehow she felt uncomfortable with the thought of simply getting rid of it. She was ruthless, but not that ruthless.

Isabella shook her head to clear it of her fears "I hope the captain can be sworn to secrecy despite his feelings of duty, and the bard... well, if he can't be bought.." That left only the guildmaster to take care of, but in the current climate that wouldn't proof to high an ambition for the ex-Rose. She would probably have to wait in line for that particular pleasure.

Isa's eyes searched Bills face, as she came closer, her rose perfum encircling them both "Would you do that for me? Will you help me get out of this mess?" Isabella put her head on his shoulder, whispering of sweet possibilities "Return with me to the citadel Bill, and take your rightful place with me at your side. The future can be so bright, if only we can get beyond this point." Isa allowed herself the sweet hope that she could return in triumph to court with several aces up her sleeve.

William was quiet for a whole burn, the feel of Isabella against him and her head on his shoulders, twisting emotions inside of him against his principles.

William was an honest man, he may have been a bit of a playboy and sailed close to the wind a few times, but he had never done a wrong thing in is life, he had killed yes, but only in self defence. His first instinct was to refuse outright, but his feelings for Isabella and the sight of her tears wrenched him apart.

He pulled away from her and sat on the bed, more in shock than anything.
He looked up at her "You want me to kill Jacob for you, Kill jacob". the later part was almost a whisper to himself.

He shook his head, "I don't know if I can do that, I thought I would do anything for you, anything, but to kill".

Tears sprang into his eyes as he wrestled with the turmoil within himself. He did not want to refuse Isabella anything, but to kill. It was wrong, so against what his father had taught him.

He put his head into his hands, unable to make the decision.

Isabella was no fool. She stretched out with her senses and felt William twist and turn even without words. Isa could guess at the meaning even if she was no mindreader. Damn that Larbeido! That power was rightfully mine.

The noble man walked away from her, in despair. For a moment, just an instant, Isabella was proud of him, then she mentally shook herself and got on with her high gamble. There was no way back now. She was damned if she was going to serve in slavery to Jacob. Besides, if she did not return to court in time for the turn of the month every thought of wealth was lost as well.

In a flair of dramatics Isabella threw herself at Williams feet, putting her head in his lap "I am sorry.. can't we do this another way. Simply put him overboard in a rowing boat." Surely Jacob couldn't swim. He would die and William safed his concious. "Or maroon him somewhere safe." Let him die of thirst, another nice option.

Her face was tearstriken as she looked up at him "By the gods I swear that I am pregnant. Now I have nothing, and Jacob has all. Should he not at least suffer some discomfort? Do you know of any other way to solve this without Jacob telling his tale and using his influence to ruin us both?" With a little snap she let go of all her emotions, flooding Bill in this decisive moment.

William felt Isabella's head upon his lap, and listened to her words, Overboard, in a lifeboat? The thoughts ran through his head, only half hearing what she said to him, ruin us both?.

He looked down at the crying woman, and was about to answer when suddenly he was hit by a mass of emotions.

Together and separately he felt sorrow, anger, hate, love, fear, elation, despair. He threw Isabella down and screamed the wash of emotion too much to control.

He started to laugh which turned hysterical, then collapsed on the floor crying like a baby. Then he was up, anger and hate flooding threw him as he smashed his fist into the wall, oblivious to the cuts, blood and pain.

He screamed once more, holding his head, then his eyes closed as he collapsed to the floor, unmoving.

A few flickers later there was a bang on the door, the captains voice came through, "Open up, what is happening in there, open this door now".
