The young elf let out a laugh, "Yes, I suppose this doesn't qualify as 'ordinary conditions', does it?" Taking a chance, Zaure touched her cheek solemnly, "....I don't need protection, Rees, I need comfort, as does everyone here, I think," Zaure's eyes flickered to Ahren and the others.

"I didn't expect to be here, either," the elf's tone was reflective, "I have made a, ,no, two," he smiled at Rees, "true friends, while at the same time experiencing a fright I haven't felt for a few yehren."

He sighed as Rees cuddled him, if she needed a child, then a child he would be.

With a soft sigh, Mere allowed herself to be pulled into the group and hugged Ahren, nodding her head to his question.

"The Ones are defeated Ahren. That is something; a big something. And we did it! Not Elnath, not Master Larbeido, but US! We have every right to feel proud today," she sighed again and squeezed his arm.

"I am just too tired to feel much," she smiled weakly. "But tomorrow is a new day." She laid her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes.

Rees sense that her answer was not what Zaure wanted to hear somehow, and, seeing his eyes flicker to Ahern and Mere and Isabella, she leans her cheek into his hand and whispers softly,

" I would protect all of you, if I could- but I cannot even protect myself. It seems that Ahern was born to be a protector, doesn't it? but Zaure,"

she pulls her head back a little to look at him closely,

"What is it that you want? comfort, yes, but... how?" The question hangs there, lingering on the air between them as Rees says seriously,

"I like you, Zaure. It seems to me that you have been... hurt, in the past adn I would like to help you overcoe that. But I do not want to add to your cares or distress you. This night has been so strange and long and everything is different than it usually is with me."

Her voice islow in Zaure's ear as she murmurs,
"Tell me what it is that you want to do, Zaure."

"......I can protect myself, I've always done it in the past, I don't want a parent, Rees, I want a friend," he smiled at her, "Yes, Ahren will protect everyone if he can, he'll give anything he has to others."

"You aren't distressing me, quite the opposite, actually," the young elf informed her, "And the night has been strange for all of us, and different, but I think we've all also discovered something about ourselves we didn't know before, and you are increasing my cares, because you are my friend now, and people are supposed to care about their friends, yes?"

Rees voice sent shivers down his spine, 'No, Zaure, this really isn't the right time to feel like that, and she already said you're like your brother....'His own inner feelings caused the young elf's face to become red, and he couldn't find a polite way to answer Rees' question.

Ahren sighed too. He liked to be surrounded by people who loved him when he felt so insecure. "They are not defeated until I see their heads seperated from their bodies." Ahren said with a hardness that was unusual for him, then he smiled, "You're tired?" he looked at her and laughed but tears came from his eyes.

With a soft chuckle, Mere patted the half-elf's chest.

"We are all tired, Ahren. You included though you might not admit it. I think it's very natural that we are tired. You don't run for several hours without getting tired," she smiled softly.

Ahren would wipe away the tears but that would mean loosing contact with either Isabella or Mere and he didn't want to do that. "Oh, I'm tired all right, and all I want is a bath. Will you make sure I don't fall asleep in the bath?" he asked them, "Of course that means you have to bathe with me." he teased.

Rees laughs a little and says,

"well, Zaure, I assure you I am not ready to be a mother just yet- not yours nor anyone elses, so set your mind at rest. and as for caring about your friends..." She twines her hand in Zaure's hair and pulls it from his shoulder so that she sees the young elf's expression clearly as she says clearly,

"I cannot stay, Zaure. I dare not. But know that I am your friend and that... " she shakes her head in frustration, saying,

"This is too hard- I cannot explain, even if I wanted to. There are too many gaps." She gives the elf a swift and hard embrace and kisses him gently as she stands and pulls him beside her.

Leaning up, she whispers in his ear,

"Tell Mere to come with you and try to meet me at the Sidhe's Kiss in one of the outer neighborhoods of the city. There is a another tavern nearby- the Red Stallion it's called. I will try to come in the late morning or early afternoon, but it may depend on my lessons." She looks over at the others and a thought strikes her.

"If we cannot meet there, I will try to leave word through Otha at the Temple. But you mustn't say anything to anyone else, Zaure. Promise me- just Mere. I- I don't want anyone at the Rose to know who I am-" she chokes down a bite of irony at that statement- "Or especially where I am to be found. I know it sounds odd- but there is a reason for it."

Rees looks around for Robin, wanting to see him before she sneaks away, hoping to say- goodbye and so many things. Then she smiles, thinking that he will easily know where she is or if she is speaking to him- if she wants to, she need only visit the temple after all.

Missed Chances

Post by Evergreen »

Shaking his head, Evergreen was disappointed that she had not shared the name of her father. She had wasted precious moments but had given him a reason not to let her go. Still, he was intrigued that her father might be someone important. It was the only thing that kept his interest in her at the moment. He was effected by the allure of a beautiful woman much as any other man, but, fortunately, he had many beautiful women in his life at the moment. This made him more immune to her natural magic.

"Then, my dear, I fear you have squandered your opportunity, for I cannot release you where you would simply vanish. What use is your gratitude when I cannot find you to benefit from it. Without knowledge of your father, and his importance, I dare not do more." He noted figures running by the two of them. "Too late, it seems the other guards are here. They would see me release you. Nevertheless, you may have one last sliver of a chance, tell me of your father, swear to me on an oath so terrible that you would wish to be devoured by the daemon you summoned tonight if you break your oath. Swear to me that if you get out of this alive, that you will do my every bidding for three months, and never betray me, I will see what I can do to get you out of this mess. You must choose now ... captivity and a horrible death, or complete servitude to me for a mere three months. Don't worry, I will only call upon you from time to time during these months. You can still live with your father. He need not know and all will be well soon."

"Now, I must hear of your father, where he lives, and I want you to swear your most terrible oath here before the gods to serve me completely for 3 months and to never betray me in the time beyond. If you do this right now, I will see what I can do to help you get out of this alive." He kept his body firmly on her so that there would be little chance of escape, or so he hoped. Thoughts of escape plans formed in his mind. He could make her stand and then she could feign a knee to the groin and he could chase after her ... only to lose her in the crowd. Alternatively, he could hold her and then try and convince Caesar later to release the girl in hopes that she would lead him to the rest of the evil sorcerers. He would need to play it by ear.

Anochrim was surprised at feeling the curves beneath him, but it didn't stop his flowing movement. After all he had fought many a duel with Sosa, and the fair lady though muscular was just as finely curved. He glimpsed something familiar. "I know you," he cursed under his breath as he pinned her down with his legs on other side of her body his hands reaching up to remove the hands from her face, "K'tan's feet! reveal yourself foul creature." His anger made him none too gentle and he spared her no mercy as he applied his strength.

Zaure

Zaure met Rees' gaze and gave a slight nod, ".....I understand, and I know you're my friend," he gave her a smile, "That's okay," the young elf returned the hug and blushed when she kissed him.

Standing up, he nodded as she whispered to meet her, "Yes, I know those places, and I also promise I won't say anything to anyone else at the Rose, except for Mere."

As Rees scanned for Robin, a concern popped into his head, "Are...are you leaving now? Alone? Aren't you going to wait for the others to get back?" the elf's eyes were full of worry. Another problem knawed at him as well, 'I need to go tell Tallana and her family about this... ...tonight, they deserve it...'

Rees is undecided, and looks around again before saying,

"Well, I really can't, that is, I don't wnat to go back to the Rose. But if Evergreen was to come back perhaps he could get me home.. We, um, know some of the same people. But..." Rees really isn't sure what she should do. She doesn't want to just take off alone and assume that the enormous presence she sensed coming to the physical plane earlier will just ignore her- her advice to Zaure goesd for herself as well.

But she isn't sure how much longer she can remain relatively annonomous without attracting the attention of someone in the Guild who will recognize her- it was sheer luck that Mere and the others were students and that Isabella was new to the Citadel.

She bites her lip a little and looks up at Zaure, admitting,

"I'm not sure just WHAT to do- kind of like everything else this evening, isn't it?"
Zaure

Post by Zaure »

"I'm sure that everyone else will wait for the others to get back, and while Ahren's trying to seduce Anochrim," the elf grinned, "and the others are dealing with all the questions, you and Evergreen can sneak off to wherever you live," Zaure suggested, "I suppose right now, the best thing to do is wait...... I hate waiting!" Zaure put on a fake pout to try and cheer Rees.
William Trance

Post by William Trance »

William saw the mans hands heading for his mouth and was upon them in an instant. He grappled with the man hoping that he didn't take the poison, they needed everyone they could get for interrogation. William cursed under his breath and wondered what could make a man take poison even though there was a dagger wound in his hip.
Copper

Post by Copper »

Copper shook his head. Punching out young women wasn't much nobler than tackling the elderly, but it couldn't have been helped. His hand went to where she'd scratched him. As long as her nails weren't coated with poison, he'd be fine.

Standing, he slung the slender figure over his shoulder and went to see if any of his companions needed aid.
Rees

Rees still looks a little worried, but she grins at Zaure's comment about Ahern and the Ceasar.

"Yes- I suppose that would be safer. But if Evergreen has an oppertunity to further himself with the Ceasar or his court... I would hate to rob him of it." She holds Zaure's hand and tosses her hair back over her shoulders with a little laugh.

"I hate watiing as well- lets see what the others are doing."

Keeping Zaure's hand, Rees walks over towards Ahern and Mere and Isabella and sees Otha laying on the ground as well. Looking at Ahern and indicating the large priest, Rees asks,

"Is he- will he be alright? He is just weary, isn't he?" Her voice is concerned and she kneels down, reaching out to gently stroke Otha's arm before sitting beside the others, still holding Zaure's hand.
Ahren

Post by Ahren »

Ahren looks up at Rees and smiles. "Yes I believe he will be fine with rest just like the rest of us. I'm going to try and keep him company tonight even though I don't think our bed will sleep seven, but I'm sure we can try." he winked. "You will be joining us will you not?"
Zaure

Post by Zaure »

Zaure allowed himself to be led over to the others as he replied, "It is kind of you not to want to take a chance from your friend, but I think that your safety is more important."

He still held Rees' hand as she asked about the priest. Zaure was worried too, not as much about Otha, but about Ahren, because Ahren was the protector, but the half-elf seemed so weary himself. He blushed when Ahren spoke of the bed sleeping seven.

Rees' face pales a little and she lowers her eyes, trying to decide what to say. At last she stammers out,

"I- that is, the people where I live- my teacher- they will be worried if I do not come home. I da- I cannot stay. I..." She trails off, and her shoulders slump a little as she looks at the charmed circle once more.

Trying to explain, she bites her lip and then says,

"It's not that I don't want to be with all of you- not that I don't trust you. It's just... I can't go to the Rose."

Rees looks down a little miserably- it seems she has just made friends, in the most unexpected way, and now she will certainly lose them.
Zaure

Post by Zaure »

Zaure knelt down beside Rees and squeezed her shoulders, then whispered into her ear, ".....They'll understand, Rees, and I can't speak for them, but I'm your friend whether you go back to the Rose or not. Ahren understands people very well, he'll understand, and if the others don't we'll make them."

The young elf gave Rees another squeeze and looked at the others, all together on the ground, looking so weary. Although Zaure did feel physically tired, more than that he felt emotionally drained. The events of the night should have reduced him to a nervous wreck, and were it not for the emotional unity they'd attained earlier with the song, he would be, but even the song had taken an effort, and part of the elf just wanted to collapse.
Ahren

"Then you should wait until someone can take you back, even if it is only the Caesar himself." Ahren told her. "I know my teacher would not let me be hurt, and I'm sure yours would take proper procautions as well, although I would feel safer with you here with us..." he looked serious. "You will allow us to make contact with you again, won't you? Just to make sure you are safe?" he asked gently.

Sosa's attempts to pin the man's hands proved fruitless. Amazingly strong for his size, he suddenly rolled to one side, tossing the purple guardsman off balance he continued to roll away from her, his hands greedily stuffing something in his mouth. Within flickers, his mouth was turning black as his body started to shake with tiny spasms.

Becoming very agitated, the redhead with Evergreen whispered fiercely, "I told you, I didn't have anything to do with summoning that nightmare! Oh by the gods," she gasped and turned her head trying to cover her face in her hood.

"The Caesar is over there. If he sees me, you'll never have the chance to do anything. He may not remember exactly who I am, but he is certain to know that he's seen me with my father before. I will... serve you... for three months as you ask, I promise by the gods. My father is Lord Ebertan and we live..." her voice grew soft and trembled. "...in the inner circle. Ask anyone where the Ebertan Manse is; they will tell you," she whispered barely audible. "Please..."

Meanwhile, down the alley Anochrim was focused on his own struggle as he looked into the familiar face of the wife of one of the members of his court. "No, no... please!" she protested weakly as tears began to stream from her eyes.

The pact she took demanded she take the poison now, but her husband had been ruined already and her death would not fix that. All was lost but she could not bring herself to swallow the foul stain that would bring death.

"Forgive me, highness," she cried out through her tears. "Please, my husband knows nothing of this. He should not suffer for my stupidity."

Well down the alley and headed for the street, Yappet continued to chase the fleeing hair man now respectably covered up in his non-descript cloak.

William was successful in diverting the poison from the man's mouth, causing it to fly off to one side. The man shrieked in rage and pain and attempted to roll and throw his pursuer off, but the knife had thrust into the hip in such a way that all movement was excruciatingly painful. "You'll not learn anything from me," the man yelled and swung his arm up with a punch aimed at William's jaw.

As Copper carried his unconscious follower of darkness back towards the building, he saw another robed figure running out the small door, more or less in his direction as he or she looked back over a shoulder.

In the temple, the six felt the heaviness lift, the darkness leave. Mere smiled and waved Rees and Zaure over. "Might as well join the snuggle pile," she bid them. "

And I don't think we have to go anywhere just yet. Let's make sure we have our strength back before we do anything. I just wish Henry were here," she sighed and gave Ahren a hug.

Rees

Post by Rees »

Rees is touched by Zaure's support- and even more when she sees that Ahern and the others seem to echo it. She scoots towards them, not quite joining the group yet and says,

"Really? You mean you'll let me go- and still stay in touch with me? If we can, I mean."

She looks at Ahern and says with a rueful look,

"Yes, I am very certain that my teacher would want me to take... precautions. And um, I'm also fairly certain I do NOT want the Ceasar escorting me back- no offense intended, its just that the people where I live are very, ah, private. It's not really a place for company."

Trumped for the moment by trying to explain the complexities inherent in living at the Basilisk- without telling anyone just where she lives- Rees is glad to simply accept Mere's invitation and take Zaure's arm to draw the elf along with her, laying her head on the other girl's shoulder and whispering,

"Thank you, Mere. I thought you would all think I was... ditching you. It isn't that - it's just complicated." She tries not to worry and snuggles in to wait.

Now I Need Some Luck

Post by Evergreen »

Perhaps he was a fool, but he wanted to believe Lady Eberton. Though his mind danced with possible ways she could help him, he would not help her if it came at the expense of Caesar's gratitude. Caesar's favor was worth far more than that offered by this green-eyed beauty. He would need a stroke of luck if he was to gain both. It was a plan that needed trickery, and he mouthed a quick prayer to Pan. The trickster might appreciate the possibilities, Evergreen thought, not knowing for certain that Pan had joined the fight against the daemon. But perhaps Pan's name on this holy night might bring him luck ... if she was truly innocent. He needed to act quickly.

"Now listen to me, you will stand up with me and obey my commands. I will face you away from Caesar while I look for an escape route. When I utter the word dark magic ... run for your life. I may pretend to chase you, but keep running back to your father's manse. If you try to run before then, I will assume you have betrayed me and I will chase and slay you myself. If you escape, I will contact you with the code name the Masked One " His words were whispered hastily, but not without menace.

Assuming she agreed, He removed himself from on top of the redhead and allowed her to stand slowly as he kept a firm grip on her cloak. He allowed her to face away from Caesar, as well as maintain the hood over her face. Quickly, his eyes scanned the scene to see who might be watching them. He prayed that another villian would run by so that he could abandon his current prisoner in favor of the new threat. That would be easier to explain, if he abandoned an innocent seeming person for someone who might be more sinister looking. He did not have much time.
